• Wiped data, and duplicated folders into files.

  Something weird happened today, and I dont know how. Within a folder, all folders have a file by the same name, with a colon appended to it. And all the files from the most inner-most directory in my home, have been dumped to ~, with a size of 0 bytes. I have not executed any scripts or anything. I was just checking out some easter eggs, namely the gegls from outer space and free the fish and was away from the computer and was logged because of the screensaver. I couldnt log-back in with my password, so I just reset the PC, and while booting, the PC went into a drive check. BUT, IIRC, i saw the duplicate "folder files" before I had logged out, so thats not the reason! All the files have a timestamp of 14 Jan. Also, the contents of my eclipse folder have been dumped into ~. Right down to the jars and ini files. HELP!

• Copy only folders not files?

  Is there a way to copy an entire directory, but only the folders? I have a corrupt file somewhere in my directory which is causing my hard disks to fail. So instead of copying the corrupt file to another hard disk, I wanted to just copy the folders, because I have scripts that search for hundreds of folders, and I don't want to have to manually create them all. I did search the cp manual, but couldn't see anything (I may have missed it) Say I have this structure on my failed HDD: dir1 files dir2 files files dir4 dir3 files All I a want is the directory structure, not any files at all. So I'd end up with on the new HDD: dir1 dir2 dir4 dir3 Hoping someone knows some tricks!

• Blogger Template: How is inline style tag getting attached to img? [migrated]

  Examining a blogger template's img tag (data:post.thumbnailUrl) i've approached a mystery. An inline style tag controlling the width, margin and heigh perimeters are getting added to my img element. They are auto adjusting the images ratio to fit a smaller size. But I can't figure-out where this style tag script lives and how it's happening in my template. My template has no special javascript or jquery scripts. The full size images in the single posts page don't have this style tag. Mobile broadband fails to connect. Somehow on Internet I found scripts to connect to Internet, but now only browser can access it, Ubuntu Software center does not recognize this connection and when try to install any software it doesnt display active internet connection. I am using two chatscript & connection in /etc/ppp/peers & /etc/ppp respectively.

  Well I have installed avast anti virus on Ubuntu 12.04. But after updating, it crashes! So I have made some tweaks like below: 1) I pressed press Ctrl+Alt+T and opened Terminal. When it opened, I ran the command below. sudo gedit /etc/init.d/rcS 2) typed my password and hit enter 3) when the text file opens add the line: sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 4) made sure the line you added is before: exec /etc/init.d/rc S 5) This is how it should look like: Code: #! /bin/sh # rcS # # Call all S??* scripts in /etc/rcS.d/ in numerical/alphabetical order # sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 exec /etc/init.d/rc S 6) save it 7) Reboot My question is. Did I do anything wrong. I mean as I have made some tweaks,will it lower the security of avast down like viruses do! Please if you are a programmer check this if it contains bug or harmful intentions...Thanks.

• Simpler alternative to AngelScript

  I want to give players the ability to create and share bullet patterns for a shoot'em up. The pattern scripts should have all the common programming stuff like loops, if/else, variables, and so on. But in the end, I just want them to call a "spawn bullet at X, Y with Z angle and A speed" in the C++ game. To spawn a circle of bullets, the user should only have to write a script with a for loop that goes from 0 to 360 and calls the spawn bullet function on every iteration. I tried integrating AngelScript, but I am getting nowhere - it looks way to complex for a simple task like this one. Is there an easy to integrate library that can solve my problem? Thanks.

  It must be really really hard to step through unit tests in a debugger during a maven build.  Right? Wrong! Here is how i do it: 1) Set up these environmental variables: MAVEN_OPTS=-Xmx1024m -Xms256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512mMAVEN_OPTS_DEBUG=-Xmx1024m -Xms256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m  -Xdebug (no line break here!!)  -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=y,address=9999MAVEN_OPTS_REG=-Xmx1024m -Xms256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m 2) create 2 scripts or aliases like so:  maveny.bat: set MAVEN_OPTS=%MAVEN_OPTS_DEBUG% mavenn.bat: set MAVEN_OPTS=%MAVEN_OPTS_REG%    To debug do this: run maveny.bat run mvn install attach your debugger to port 9999 (set breakpoints of course) When maven gets to the unit test phase it will hit your breakpoint and wait for you. When done debugging simply run mavenn.bat Notes If it takes a while to do the build then you don't really need to set the suspend=y flag. If you set the suspend=n flag then you can just leave it -- but only one maven build can run at a time because of the debug port conflict.

• How do I get rid of this drive mount confirmation question when booting the computer?

  With help from this site, I was able to set up an SSHFS connection between two computers on my LAN so that one auto mounts on the other at boot time. Everything works, but there is this annoying confirmation that comes up whenever I boot: An error occurred while mounting /home/dave/Mythbuntu. Press S to skip mounting or M or Manual recovery If I press S, then booting continues, and my drive is mounted as hoped, so it seems like even though I "skipped" it, maybe it tried again and succeeded later in the boot process. I followed the instructions here to set up "if up / if down" scripts, and here is my current /etc/fstab: sshfs#[email protected]:/home/mythbuntu /home/dave/Mythbuntu fuse auto,users,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,allow_other,reconnect,transform_symlinks,BatchMode=yes 0 0 Although the mounting is working, this step of having to press S every time I boot is obviously kind of a hassle. How do I configure my computer so I don't have to do that, and so that my other computer will still automount?

• Un-used Indexes on MDP_MATRIX Consuming Resources

  Disable un-used Indexes: As much as it is recommended to create relevant indexes, it is advised not to have too many indexes on the mdp_matrix table.  Too many indexes will cause long waits on the table as indexes needs to get updated every time the table is updated.  There are many seeded indexes on mdp_matrix, every out of the box data model level has an index on the matrix table.  If a level is unused in the specific data model of the implementation, it is advisable to disable that index.  If the customer is not sure if and how indexes are utilized, the DBA can monitor all indexes.  After a few cycles of operation, the DBA should go over that list and see which indexes have not been used.  Consider disabling them. There are scripts on the net to monitor indexes or use the monitoring usage clause in the alter index statement.

  I found some time over the holidays to finalize the Azure edition of IdentityServer. http://identityserver.codeplex.com/releases/view/81206 The biggest difference to the on-premise version (and earlier Azure betas) is, that by default IdSrv now uses Azure Storage for all data storage (configuration & user data). This means that there is no need anymore for SQL Azure (which is still supported out of the box – just not the default anymore). The download includes a readme file with setup instructions. In a nutshell: Create a new hosted service and upload your certificates Modify the service configuration file in the download to your needs (signing cert, connection strings to storage…) Deploy the package via the portal or other tools Use the new Powershell scripts to add users If you encounter any problem, please give me feedback.

• Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.

• How can I determine whether a shellscript runs as root or not?

  This is something I've been curious about. I make a lot of small bash scripts (.sh files) to do tasks that I routinely do. Some of those tasks require everything to be ran as superuser. I've been curious: Is it possible to, within the BASH script prior to everything being run, check if the script is being run as superuser, and if not, print a message saying You must be superuser to use this script, then subsequently terminate the script itself. The other side of that is I'd like to have the script run when the user is superuser, and not generate the error. Any ideas on coding (if statements, etc.) on how to execute the aforementioned?

• PHPForm Data Generate PDF & Send to Email?

  I'm a beginner in PHP I was wondering if this is easy to do or if i'd have to outsource this to a programmer - Basically when a user fills in the PHP Form and submits it I need this to generate as a PDF (with all the labels etc) which will then email/attach to MY email and NOT the user who submitted this form. I have looked at tcpdf, fpdi but i dont think any of those scripts allow me to do this specifically as from what i heard it generates a download link for the user, and that is not what i need. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. Regards Tom

Students interested in Operating Systems can study MINIX and PintOS, write shell scripts or study POSIX system calls. What would be the best course of action in order to practice Server Administration? Is there any such software/resource available, teaching you such skills with small lessons, or it is totally up to you? I've practiced live FreeBSD server administration and management of VMs (CentOS, Gentoo, Debian) under VirtualBox, but I always feel that this isn't enough and I must push myself harder. So, what would you recommend? What has worked for you?

• Any way to edit Warcraft MDX or MDL Animated models?

  I have been searching for a while for a way to get an animated mdl or mdx model into any 3D animating software (such as Blender), but so far have not had any success. I found a few methods of getting textured static mdx or mdl models into Blender/Milkshape/Hexagon, but no one seems to have written an importer that deals with the mdl/mdx model's keyframe animation. On that note, if anyone knows of a way of importing a keyframe-animated 3DS model into Blender, me and alot of people would appreciate it if you could let us know. • Is there any way to discover the traffic of a site I don't control?

  Given the following: The website does not call any external images or scripts, all the content is hosted on a server that is in our control. The website does not contain the meta tag, nor does it contain the html file that would authorize a Google Account access to Webmaster Tools. The access logs have not been provided to any 2nd or 3rd party. Is it possible for a 3rd party to get an idea of how many hits the site is getting, or are they limited to just seeing how high the site ranks? • iOS Support with Windows Azure Mobile Services – now with Push Notifications

  A few weeks ago I posted about a number of improvements to Windows Azure Mobile Services. One of these was the addition of an Objective-C client SDK that allows iOS developers to easily use Mobile Services for data and authentication.  Today I'm excited to announce a number of improvement to our iOS SDK and, most significantly, our new support for Push Notifications via APNS (Apple Push Notification Services).  This makes it incredibly easy to fire push notifications to your iOS users from Windows Azure Mobile Service scripts. Push Notifications via APNS We've provided two complete tutorials that take you step-by-step through the provisioning and setup process to enable your Windows Azure Mobile Service application with APNS (Apple Push Notification Services), including all of the steps required to configure your application for push in the Apple iOS provisioning portal: Getting started with Push Notifications - iOS Push notifications to users by using Mobile Services - iOS Once you've configured your application in the Apple iOS provisioning portal and uploaded the APNS push certificate to the Apple provisioning portal, it's just a matter of uploading your APNS push certificate to Mobile Services using the Windows Azure admin portal: Clicking the “upload” within the “Push” tab of your Mobile Service allows you to browse your local file-system and locate/upload your exported certificate.  As part of this you can also select whether you want to use the sandbox (dev) or production (prod) Apple service: Now, the code to send a push notification to your clients from within a Windows Azure Mobile Service is as easy as the code below: push.apns.send(deviceToken, {      alert: 'Toast: A new Mobile Services task.',      sound: 'default' }); This will cause Windows Azure Mobile Services to connect to APNS (Apple Push Notification Service) and send a notification to the iOS device you specified via the deviceToken: Check out our reference documentation for full details on how to use the new Windows Azure Mobile Services apns object to send your push notifications. Feedback Scripts An important part of working with any PNS (Push Notification Service) is handling feedback for expired device tokens and channels. This typically happens when your application is uninstalled from a particular device and can no longer receive your notifications. With Windows Notification Services you get an instant response from the HTTP server.  Apple’s Notification Services works in a slightly different way and provides an additional endpoint you can connect to poll for a list of expired tokens. As with all of the capabilities we integrate with Mobile Services, our goal is to allow developers to focus more on building their app and less on building infrastructure to support their ideas. Therefore we knew we had to provide a simple way for developers to integrate feedback from APNS on a regular basis.  This week’s update now includes a new screen in the portal that allows you to optionally provide a script to process your APNS feedback – and it will be executed by Mobile Services on an ongoing basis: This script is invoked periodically while your service is active. To poll the feedback endpoint you can simply call the apns object's getFeedback method from within this script: push.apns.getFeedback({       success: function(results) {           // results is an array of objects with a deviceToken and time properties      } }); This returns you a list of invalid tokens that can now be removed from your database. iOS Client SDK improvements Over the last month we've continued to work with a number of iOS advisors to make improvements to our Objective-C SDK. The SDK is being developed under an open source license (Apache 2.0) and is available on github. Many of the improvements are behind the scenes to improve performance and memory usage. However, one of the biggest improvements to our iOS Client API is the addition of an even easier login method.  Below is the Objective-C code you can now write to invoke it: [client loginWithProvider:@"twitter"                     onController:self                        animated:YES                      completion:^(MSUser *user, NSError *error) {      // if no error, you are now logged in via twitter }]; This code will automatically present and dismiss our login view controller as a modal dialog on the specified controller.  This does all the hard work for you and makes login via Twitter, Google, Facebook and Microsoft Account identities just a single line of code.   I would like to know how the installer, and in particular the guided partitioning for Ubuntu Server 12.04 works under the hood. I'm not interested in documentation, I want to check out the real scripts and the logic in them. How do you recommend I dig into this? Where on the ISO are these parts located? I don't know what the installer for Ubuntu is called, or how it is configured. I am well versed in programming languages and command line GNU/Linux.

• Matching my skills with Java and Web Programming

  here is my main question: What is the most common way that Java is used in web development? The reason I ask: I am currently in the process of finding my first internship. Every employer has a separate set of languages, technologies and acronyms they want their candidates to know. In school I did well with Java. As a hobby and interest I have developed a handful of web pages widgets, scripts, etc. My university emphasized Java, C and theory. My hobbies emphasize HTML, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and a little jQuery, etc. I can't learn a dozen different technologies to satisfy most prospective employers (in what is left of the summer). I think my best bet is combine my skills with Java and my interests in web development. That brings me back to my original question: What is the most common way that Java is used in web development?
