    I have a form validation message for the user name field which says the following Name can only contain alphabets, '.' and ' ' characters OR should it be Name can only contain alphabets, dot and space characters OR should it be Name can only contain alphabets, dot (".") and space (" ") characters Which is preferable from a usability perspective assuming the end users has very less exposure to computers.

    Is there a good way to get Facebook Connect onto a Silverlight page? All I really need is simple authorization/registration. I've looked into the facebook developer toolkit, but the documentation is more or less non-existent for Silverlight, and I didn't really get anywhere with it. Is there a good tutorial or a working library for adding Facebook Connect into a Silverlight app? Or is the best way to run Silverlight in Windowwless mode with HTML overlayed on top?

  • Why is C++ backward compatible with C ? Why isn't there some "pure" C++ language ?

    C and C++ are different languages, blababla we know that. But if those language are different, why is it still possible to use function like malloc or free ? I'm sure there are all sort of dusty things C++ has because of C, but since C++ is another language, why not remove those things to make it a little less bloat and more clean and clear ? Is it because it allows programmers to work without the OO model or because some compilers doesn't support high-level abstract features of C++ ?

  • Remove results below a certain score threshold in Solr/Lucene?

    Hi Guys, Is there a built-in functionalities in solr/lucene to filter the results if they fall below a certain score threshold? Let's say if I provide a score threshold of .2, then all documents with score less than .2 will be removed from my results. My intuition is that this is possible by updating/customizing solr or lucene. Could you point me to right direction on how to do this? Thanks in advance!

  • HTML5 Offline Storage on iPad and iPhone BUG

    Hello everyone, I created a manifest file with 1000 items. Safari, Mozilla browsers are saving the files offline successfully and even Android saves the files correctly offline. On iPad and iPhone when I am trying to save more than 300 items in some point the applicationCache returns "error". When I am trying to save less (e.x.: 200) it saves the files correctly and the applicationCache returns "cached". Any ideas? Thank you.

    I'm using ImageMagick's convert tool to generate image thumbnails for a web application. I'm using notation like so: 600x600> The images are indeed scaled to 600px wide/tall (depending on the longer side) and proportions are properly maintained, however images less than 600px in either direction are scaled up — this behavior is not desired. Is there a way to prevent convert from scaling images up if the destination dimensions both exceed the original image size?

  • Realtime MySQL search results on an advanced search page

    I'm a hobbyist, and started learning PHP last September solely to build a hobby website that I had always wished and dreamed another more competent person might make. I enjoy programming, but I have little free time and enjoy a wide range of other interests and activities. I feel learning PHP alone can probably allow me to create 98% of the desired features for my site, but that last 2% is awfully appealing: The most powerful tool of the site is an advanced search page that picks through a 1000+ record game scenario database. Users can data-mine to tremendous depths - this advanced page has upwards of 50 different potential variables. It's designed to allow the hardcore user to search on almost any possible combination of data in our database and it works well. Those who aren't interested in wading through the sea of options may use the Basic Search, which is comprised of the most popular parts of the Advanced search. Because the advanced search is so comprehensive, and because the database is rather small (less than 1,200 potential hits maximum), with each variable you choose to include the likelihood of getting any qualifying results at all drops dramatically. In my fantasy land where I can wield AJAX as if it were Excalibur, my users would have a realtime Total Results counter in the corner of their screen as they used this page, which would automatically update its query structure and report how many results will be displayed with the addition of each variable. In this way it would be effortless to know just how many variables are enough, and when you've gone and added one that zeroes out the results set. A somewhat similar implementation, at least visually, would be the Subtotal sidebar when building a new custom computer on IBuyPower.com For those of you actually still reading this, my question is really rather simple: Given the time & ability constraints outlined above, would I be able to learn just enough AJAX (or whatever) needed to pull this one feature off without too much trouble? would I be able to more or less drop-in a pre-written code snippet and tweak to fit? or should I consider opening my code up to a trusted & capable individual in the future for this implementation?   • c++ std::ostringstream vs std::string::append

    In all examples that use some kind of buffering I see they use stream instead of string. How is std::ostringstream and << operator different than using string.append. Which one is faster and which one uses less resourses (memory). One difference I know is that you can output different types into output stream (like integer) rather than the limited types that string::append accepts. Here is an example: std::ostringstream os; os << "Content-Type: " << contentType << ";charset=" << charset << "\r\n"; std::string header = os.str(); vs std::string header("Content-Type: "); header.append(contentType); header.append(";charset="); header.append(charset); header.append("\r\n"); Obviously using stream is shorter, but I think append returns reference to the string so it can be written like this: std::string header("Content-Type: "); header.append(contentType) .append(";charset=") .append(charset) .append("\r\n"); And with output stream you can do: std::string content; ... os << "Content-Length: " << content.length() << "\r\n"; But what about memory usage and speed? Especially when used in a big loop. Update: To be more clear the question is: Which one should I use and why? Is there situations when one is preferred or the other? For performance and memory ... well I think benchmark is the only way since every implementation could be different. Update 2: Well I don't get clear idea what should I use from the answers which means that any of them will do the job, plus vector. Cubbi did nice benchmark with the addition of Dietmar Kühl that the biggest difference is construction of those objects. If you are looking for an answer you should check that too. I'll wait a bit more for other answers (look previous update) and if I don't get one I think I'll accept Tolga's answer because his suggestion to use vector is already done before which means vector should be less resource hungry.

    In Android developers I've seen that testPreconditions() method is supposed to be launch before all tests. But in my app test, it's acting like a normal test. It does not run before all tests. Is there something wrong ? Here is the description about testPreconditions() from android developer : "A preconditions test checks the initial application conditions prior to executing other tests. It's similar to setUp(), but with less overhead, since it only runs once."

  • File size in Python server

    We have server on Python and client + web service on Ruby. That works only if file from URL is less than 800 k. It seems like "socket.puts data" in a client works, but "output = socket.gets" - not. I think problem is in a Python part. For big files tests run "Connection reset by peer". Is it buffer size variable by default somewhere in a Python?
