  I am new to using Mock test in .Net. I am testing out a financial transaction which is of the following nature: int amt =20; //sets all the props and func and returns a FinaceAccount. //Note I did not SetUp the amt of the account. var account =GetFinanceAccount() //service layer to be tested _financeService.tranx(account,amt); //checks if the amt was added to the account.amt //here the amt comes out same as that set in GetFinanceAccount. Assert.AreEqual(account.amt ,amt) I know that the function tranx works correctly but there is an issue with the test. Are there any GOOD reference material on Mocking in .Net

• Do AOP violate layered architecture for enterprise apps?

  The question(as stated in the title) comes to me as recently i was looking at Spring MVC 3.1 with annotation support and also considering DDD for an upcoming project. In the new Spring any POJO with its business methods can be annotated to act as controller, all the concerns that i would have addressed within a Controller class can be expressed exclusively through the annotations. So, technically i can take any class and wire it to act as controller , the java code is free from any controller specific code, hence the java code could deal with things like checking security , starting txn etc. So will such a class belong to Presentation or Application layer ?? Taking that argument even further , we can pull out things like security, txn mgmt and express them through annotations , thus the java code is now that of the domain object. Will that mean we have fused together the 2 layers? Please clarify

• One-to-many relationship related to many tables

  I have a scenario where: there are two (or more) tables that represent independent items. lets say Users and Companies Both of these tables need addresses stored. Each one can have one or more address In a normal 1 to many scenario Addresses table woudl just have a UserId or a CompanyId creating a normal 1 to many relationship. In this case i have a few approaches i can think of the Addresses table could have both a UserId and a CompanyId and only one would be used for each record. 2 keys could be used ObjectId and ObjectType So Object id would have a UserId or a CompanyId, and ObjectType woudl be User or Company Create an ObjectTable and add ObjectId to Users and Companies. Addresses would then have an OjbectId I do not really like any of these solutions. i am wondering what is the best approach here. On another note i will most likely user linqtosql for my data access layer.

• Control ( UIButton, UILable) Hides when the Video plays Again on iPhone!

  Hi, I have displayed UIButton on top of Playing Movie using this code. [moviePlayerWindow addSubview:self.myABC]; } There are 2 buttons on top of my movie layer. They play different videos.Now the strange part is the video plays fine with buttons showing on top of it. When i press the button to play the other movie plays but the buttons doesnt show. Seems the view reloads and flushes all the Subviews. But i have checked it in the debug mode and it enters into the 'if' condition and this line runs [moviePlayerWindow addSubview:self.myABC]; But the buttons are not dislpayed. • Is there away to load a page only once with AJAX?

  I have an AJAX call to load a function once the page is loaded, the function opens a lightbox a like frame with some data. The issue is that if I click on close (lightbox frame), the page loads again and again loading the frame so the use never reaches the page under the layer of frame since the frame load on infinite loop. The Ajax is repeating calling the function I guess but I would like to load the frame once and when the user clicks X (close) he may return to the original page. $(document).ready(function(){ var city = $('#citycode').html(); $.ajax({ //when page is loaded, fire the following function success: function(){ //the function to be fired located in the page in seperate file openX(city + //some other parameters); }}); }); Any tips?

• Split query result by half in TSQL (obtain 2 resultsets/tables)

  I have a query that returns a large number of heavy rows. When I transform this rows in a list of CustomObject I have a big memory peak, and this transformation is made by a custom dotnet framework that I can't modify. I need to retrieve a less number of rows to do "the transform" in two passes and then avoid the momery peak. How can I split the result of a query by half? I need to do it in DB layer. I thing to do a "Top count(*)/2" but how to get the other half? Thank you!

• JMS message received at only one server

  I'm having a problem with a JEE6 application running in a clustered environment using WebSphere ApplicationServer 8. A search index is used for quick search in the UI (using Lucene), which must be re-indexed after new data arrived in the corresponding DB layer. To achieve this we're sending a JMS message to the application, then the search index will be refreshed. The problem is, that the messages only arrives at one of the cluster members. So only there the search index is up to date. At the other servers it remains outdated. How can I achieve that the search index gets updated at all cluster members? Can I receive the message somehow on all servers? Or is there a better way to do this?

• How to Create a Virtual Windows Drive

  Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that. • linq .net with dynamically generated controls

  This is a very strange problem and i really dont have a clue whats causing it. What is supposed to happen is that a call to the BLL then DAL returns some data via a linq SPROC call. The retunred IMultipleResults object is processed and all results stored in a hashtable. The hashtable is stored in session and then the UI layer uses these results to dynamically generate some gridviews. Easy you would think. But if i run the code i dont get any gridviews. If i take out the call to the BLL and DAL the gridviews appear but with nothing in them? Why is it the page renders correctly when i take out the call to get the data? Thanks.

• Databinding a list (in an object) to a combobox in VB.net

  VB 2008 .NET 3.5 I have a custom "Shipment" object that contains a list of "ShippingRate" objects. This list of "ShippingRates" is accessible through a property "Shipment.PossibleShippingRates." That property simply returns a copy of the list of "ShippingRate" for that particular Shipment. My UI layer receives a list of "Shipment" objects from the BLL. This list is databound to a datagridview, and shows details relevant to the Shipment such as Shipping Address, etc. I want to bind the "Shipment.PossibleShippingRates" property to a combobox, such that when the user changes the grid row, the combobox reflects the "PossibleShippingRates" for that "Shipment." In addition, I need a way to store the "ShippingRate" they selected from the combobox for later use. I have tried a few ideas, but none of them work properly. Any ideas on how to do this?

• Can I load a 32 bit DLL into a 64 bit process on Windows?

  I recently upgraded a c# windows service to run as a 64 bit .net process. Normally, this would be trivial, but the system makes use of a 32-bit DLL written in C++. It is not an option to convert this DLL to 64 bit, so I wrapped the DLL in a separate 32 bit .net process and exposed a .net interface via remoting. This is quite a reliable solution, but I would prefer to run the system as a single process. Is there any way I can load my 32 bit DLL into a 64 bit process and access it directly (perhaps through some sort of thunking layer)?

• .net configurable business error messages

  Hi all, I need to implement some kind of solution such that in our business logic layer when certain conditions are met an error message is returned. That error message should be configurable either in a file or table that can be edited at run time if needed. I've seen it done before a few ways and it always ends up something like "This error message is {0}" and then when the dev goes the use the message they dont neccesarily know how many (if any) parameters the message needs. Just hoping to leverage off something that may have already been done, I dont think there is a provider or anything already in the .net framework.

• Layers with GDI+

  I'm thinking of creating a drawing program with layers, and using GDI+ to display them. I want to use GDI+ because it supports transparency. The thing is, drawing lines to the DC is very fast, but drawing directly to a bitmap is very slow. It is only fast if you lock the bits and start setting pixels. Can I draw to multiple DC's in my WM_PAINT event, then just do DrawBitmap for each layer to the MemDC? What's the best way of going about this? Thanks

• Is it possible to obtain ASP.NET membership user name after FormsAuth.SignIn ?

  I have some code that is accessing Membership.GetUser() to get the current logged in user. This works fine until I try to access it immediately after logging in with FormsAuth.SignIn(userName, false); However I noticed that neither Membership.GetUser() nor User.Identity.Name is updated with the newly logged in user until a new request (I assume its reading directly from the Request cookies). This however kind of screws up my logic that accesses Membership.GetUser() becasue it introduces a special case. Question: is there a way to read the current logged in user with ASP.NET membership immediately after logging in. Or will I have to introduce my own abstraction layer to allow me to 'set' a user as being logged in ? (This is in an AJAX request - so i'd rather not do a redirect).

• Should I convert overly-long UTF-8 strings to their shortest normal form?

  I've just been reworking my Encoding::FixLatin Perl module to handle overly-long UTF-8 byte sequences and convert them to the shortest normal form. My question is quite simply "is this a bad idea"? A number of sources (including this RFC) suggest that any over-long UTF-8 should be treated as an error and rejected. They caution against "naive implementations" and leave me with the impression that these things are inherently unsafe. Since the whole purpose of my module is to clean up messy data files with mixed encodings and convert them to nice clean utf8, this seems like just one more thing I can clean up so the application layer doesn't have to deal with it. My code does not concern itself with any semantic meaning the resulting characters might have, it simply converts them into a normalised form. Am I missing something. Is there a hidden danger I haven't considered?

• Android: how to convert whole ImageView to Bitmap?

  I have my application that is displaying images with different ratio, resized inside (centerInside) imageView. What I need is to create bitmap from the ImageView including the background (black in this case). So for example I have device screen 320x480, full screen imageView with image resized to 280x480. How could I get 320x480 bitmap from it? On top of this imageview I have some logos or buttons that I don't want to include to bitmap, they're like on top layer. All I need is bitmap with image and black border from some sides.

• Django Template - Convert python list into a javascript object

  I am working on a django / python website I have a page where I want to display a table of search results The list of results is passed in to the template as normal I also want to make this list of objects accessible to the javascript code My first solution was just create another view that returned json format. But each page load required calling the query twice. So then I tried only downloading the data using the json view and printing the table using javascript. but this is also not desirable as now the presentation layer is mixed into the javascript code. is there a way to create a javascript object from the python list as the page is rendered?

  I have a project that need to draw a fast chart with many series. I must change start position of drawing to a favor position when user want. .Net Chart is slow in lots of series. When I plot the chart, I must invalidate the chart for updates, drawing speed will be too slow if there are too many series. I need at least 900 series in a chart for this project.   I have the following query that gets run within a proc. The function MyFunction returns a table, and this query joins on that table. This proc works great when a @MyArg value is supplied. However, I’m wondering if there’s a way to run this on all @MyArg values in the database. I’m sure there’s a way to do it within a loop, but I know that loops are generally to be avoided at the db layer. I really just need to perform this for the sake of checking (and possibly cleansing) some bad data. • How should I mock out my data connectivity

  I'm trying to unit test my Data Access Layer and I'm in the process of trying to mock my data connectivity to unit test my DAL and I'm coming unstuck trying to mock out the creation of the commands. I thought about using a queue of IDbParameters for the creation of the parameters, but the unit tests then require that the parameters are configured in the right order. I'm using MOQ and having looked around for some documentation to walk me through this, I'm finding lots of recommendation not to do this, but to write a wrapper for the connection, but it's my contention that my DAL is supposed to be the wrapper for my database and I don't feel I should be writing wrappers... if I do, how do I unit test the connectivity to the database for my wrapper? By writing another wrapper? It seems like it's turtles all the way down. So does anyone have any recommendations or tutorials regarding this particular area of unit testing/mocking?
