• How to change security configutarion in IE8 for Intranet pages, such that Javascript can close a Win

  I am developing a system that uses a little Internet page as a front-end for the whole program. Since I need to use ActiveX (sigh), the page must work on Internet Explorer. However, after some actions have been done the page needs to close itself. Using window.close() on Javascript it works, but before closing it prompts the user if it wants to close the Window. The ideal would be that it closes automatically. Is there any way to make IE8 (changing an option on the browser, not a code-only solution) not to prompt before closing the Window?

• Python HTTPSConnection.close() does not appear to close the connection?

  I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I'm just doing something wrong. If I were to do an HTTP connection like this: import httplib http_connection = httplib.HTTPConnection("192.168.192.196") http_connection.request("GET", "/") http_connection.sock.settimeout(20) response = http_connection.getresponse() data = response.read() http_connection.close() Then at a DOS prompt, I do this: netstat -ano | find /i "192.168.192.196:80" | find /i "ESTABLISHED" I get nothing. However, if I do the same thing, but change it to an HTTPSConnection: import httplib http_connection = httplib.HTTPSConnection("192.168.192.196") http_connection.request("GET", "/") http_connection.sock.settimeout(20) response = http_connection.getresponse() data = response.read() http_connection.close() Then do this: netstat -ano | find /i "192.168.192.196:443" | find /i "ESTABLISHED" I will actually see that the connection remains established until I actually ^Z out of the Python shell. This is happening in one of the applications I'm responsible for. Python isn't actually hanging there - it's simply leaving the connection open. Am I doing something wrong here? Do I need extra code to close the HTTPS connection? This is Python 2.6.4, btw.

• Communicating between an overlayed iFrame and the underlying page (LAMP)

  I have a small form is to be filled in. If the user is logged in, the form is submitted as normal. If the user is not logged in, I show an overlayer with an iframe'd page that contains a login box where he enters his credentials. If the credentials are correct I can "break out" of the frame to "return" to the main page, but how can I update this main page for example to show "you are now logged in" and to change the JS / PHP login that determines whether or not the form can be submitted normally and not be intercepted again by the overlayer prompt? Afaik, these two separate pages are not aware of each other so I'm struggling to find a solution to this problem. This is in a LAMP / jQuery / CodeIgniter environment. EDIT: Could CodeIgniter's XML RPC class be useful for this?

• VSS Analyze - Access to file [filename] is denied

  Our VSS database appears to be horribly out of shape. I've been trying to archive and run "analyze" and keep getting "Access to file [filename] is denied. The file may be read-only, may be in use, or you may not have permission to write to the file. Correct this problem and run analyze again." No one is logged into SourceSafe (including myself) and I'm running the analyze utility from the VS command prompt as follows: analyze -v -f -bbackuppath databasepath I get similar errors if I try and create project archives from the ssadmin tool. The database is on a network share, and we're running VSS 2005 v8.0.50727.42. I'd love to be able to do this, as it would be a first step in a move away from VSS. Thanks in advance. More Info Every time I run analyze, the file that spawns the access denied message changes. It's almost as if running analyze unlocks that file so that the next time I get through to the next one.

  Hi We have a suite of programs that check for new versions at startup, and then download new versions to run if required. This is obviously a problem in Windows 7, when it is locked down as a 'standard user', as they can't write to the c:\program files directory and below. Anyone seen a example of an application that gets around with issue ? Our applications are written in Delphi, but an example in any language would be useful. Thanks in advance Update: We already have a system for determing whether a new version exists, the only problem is the download and install (if required), as this requires elevation.   So I'm working on creating a very simple C program that just preforms shell commands. This is what I have so far: #include <stdio.h> int main() { char input[30]; fputs("$ ", stdout); fflush(stdout); fgets(input, sizeof input, stdin); system(input); } It works, but only for one command. For example if I compile and type ./cmd I get the $ prompt. If I type ls I get what I'm supposed to get. But then it exits and goes back to the regular system shell. How can I make it so after the user types a command it goes back to the "$" input.

I want to (a) load default values and (b) account for multiple languages more elegantly (?) than 60-plus iterations of NSLocalizedString. Can I park all of this data into what amounts to a record with fields like this: (key value stuff), (tweak-able user prompt / screen name / whatever), (tasteful default), (user-supplied value)? NSUserDefault has worked well so far; Core Data looks like overkill (?), and sql lite, well, where's Oracle when you need it?

• How can I convert spaces to tabs in Vim or Linux?

  I've looked over several questions on Stack Overflow for how to convert spaces to tabs without finding what I need. There seem to be more questions about how to convert tabs to spaces, but I'm trying to do the opposite. In Vim I've tried :retab and :retab! without luck, but I believe those are actually for going from tabs to spaces anyways. I tried both expand and unexpand at the command prompt without any luck.   I'm running windows xp and I've got MiniMagick and ImageMagick installed (latest versions). I'm now using the console to test out that everything works. Using the ms command prompt image magick works no problem. I'm testing this by using the identify command. Now, when I try to use MiniMagick from the console by entering image = MiniMagick::Image.new('image.jpg') It returns MiniMagickError, "ImageMagick command ("identify \"input.jpg\"") failed: {:status_code = #"'identify' is not recognized as an internal or external command,\noperable program or batch file.\n"} Can anybody help?

• How do I have my apps dialog box pop up and take focus from the current running app?

  I know this type of thing is looked negatively upon but I write software for people with disabilities and sometimes good gui practices don't make sense. In this case, the user interacts with a assistive interface and under certain conditions, my control app needs to prompt the user with a question. My background process creates a dialog (I'm using wxwidgets wxDialog class) and calls Show(). The dialog box appears but it does not have focus (the application that the user was previously using keeps it). Since my users can't use mice, they can't simply click on the window. I've tried calling show and then followed by SetFocus(HWND) but that doesn't do it. What's the problem? Is this even possible? Window7. I'm thinking that it might have something to do with it being a dialog and not a full window (wxFrame). Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I'm having a problem with emulator-5554, it keeps telling me it is offline. When I do a 'adb devices' from the command line it says emulator-5554 offline Even after a fresh restart, I try that command and it still says it is offline. The problem is when I try to install .apk files to the emulator using 'abd install path' from the command prompt, it tells me that it is offline, if I create another device and run that one, then try to install the .apk files, it says i have too many devices connected. So in other words, I can't install my .apk files. How in the world can I get rid of that damn emulator-5554? I heard that if you do a restart, it should clear all the devices, but that does not seem to be working. It is like it is getting initialized when my computer starts up. Has anyone run into this issue? Thanks

  So I re-installed java in a directory that doesn't have any spaces in it, as I was having issues with it before. Java JDK is installed in: E:\downloads\java\jdk I created a User variable: JAVA_HOME E:\downloads\java\jdk And my Path looks like: %JAVA_HOME%\bin;%M2%; Now opening a NEW cmd prompt: c:\java 'java' is not recognized... but echoing works: c:\echo %JAVA_HOME% E:\downloads\java\jdk and so does this: c:\%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java -version java version "1.6.0_17" I am trying to get this to work, so I can then get maven to work as maven is having the same type of issues (I created M2_HOME and M2 and none work). What exactly am I doing wrong? I am having the exact same issue on my laptop also, both are running windows 7. I must be missing something!

• ASP.Net website makes browser load unwanted (non-referenced) plugins

  I've found that some of my ASP.Net web apps prompt the browser to load plugins that I'm not explicitely using and certainly haven't deliberately referenced in the project settings. Two that come to mind are for MS MediaPlayer and the "SVG Viewer for Netscape". The only commonality I've determined so far is that the two sites/apps affected both use Master pages (nested in some cases). We don't use SVG file types (just the normal mix of jpg/gif/png) and no video/audio (not yet anyway). Can anyone provide a hint as to where the references for these might be creeping in? e.g. Is it a server-level include? Or a .Net runtime default when using master pages? Does anyone else even experience this, or is it just me? No urgency, I'd just like to remove it if possible. Thanks. Al
