• Good tutorial resources for creating 2D character sprite?

  I am planning on learning how to create 2D character sprite by myself and making a game using RPG Maker VX Ace. I've been searching for the tutorial of making approx. 32x64 size human character sprite but haven't been able to find one close enough. Most tutorials I've found are either really general or creating sprites that are way too complicated. FYI I wish to learn how to make this type of characters by myself: not too complicated, fit for a small fan-made game made by RPG Maker. Ideally, I wish to learn from the stage of character sketch until realizing the character using photoshop or other kinds of tools (I have some foundations of visual art, it's just that I am not sure how to sketch a character this small). If you know of such tutorial resource please let me know -- thank you very much!

  Question just comes in front because the very recent published algorithm changes by Google been affected my website traffic. And I've been wondering that my homepage page-rank is been also drop to 6 to 4 (Might be I am not sure). I am not using any supernatural SEO tools like SEOMOZ,Majesctic SEO etc. So it's quite difficult for me to ensure weather the page rank is been really affected or not.   I am working on a game and want to strengthen its requirement checking to ensure that it can run successfully. Therefore, I am looking for information on what is useful to check before starting the game. As a simple example, Why check for a specific amount of memory? Should I as a game developer ensure a minimum amount of memory? I feel this information is usually skipped in many books and resources but is critical to be able to deliver a game that will run on many machines. I would appreciate if you answered with what you check in the system, why you check it and if you have a good resource about it, please include. Just to be a bit more specific, I'm developing in Windows.

• Apache FilesMatch regexp: Can it match by the cache buster 10 digit (rails generated) following the filename?

  According to the apache FilesMatch docs: The FilesMatch directive provides for access control by filename Basically, I only want to set an expires header for resources that have a 10 digit "cache buster" id appended to the name. So, here is my attempt at such a thing in my httpd.conf <FilesMatch "(jpg|jpeg|png|gif|js|css)\?\d{10}$"> ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "now plus 5 minutes" </FilesMatch> And here is an example of a resource I want to match: http://localhost:3000/images/of/elvis/eating-a-bacon-sandwich.png?1306277384 Now obviously my FilesMatch regexp is not matching so I am guessing 1 of 2 things is happening. Either my regexp is wonky or the '?1231231231' cache busting part of the file is not part of what apache considers part of the filename. Can anybody confirm and/or give me a way to cache only those resources that will not persist beyond the next deploy?

  Many times there is the need to load external resources into the program, may they be graphics, audio samples or text strings. Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data? As in: GraphicsHandler.instance().loadAllData() ...//and then later: draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().getData(WATER_IMAGE)) //or maybe draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().WATER_IMAGE) Or should I assign each resource to the class where it belongs? As in (for example, in a game): Graphics g = GraphicsLoader.load(CHAR01); Character c = new Character(..., g); ... c.draw(); Generally speaking which of these two is the more robust solution? • How do I screen-capture an inactive window?

  How can I screen-capture an inactive (minimized / on another workspace) window in Ubuntu? Applications like ImageMagick's import are only able to capture active windows. When attempting to capture an inactive window, I get the following message: unable to read X window image `<id>': Resource temporarily unavailable @ error/xwindow.c/XImportImage/5023. Might be able to do this using Compiz, as it is able to render previews of inactive windows. Furthermore, in my specific case, the window I want to capture is run in a Wine Explorer-container. Inside that container the application is always active.

• Is ROA a specific form of SOA?

  I have read somewhere that ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) is SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) with specific constraints added. SOA is the abstract term and that ROA is an implementation of SOA with all of the constraints of RESTful services (SOA = concept, ROA = concept + implementation details). I also had my share of posts saying that ROA is REST and that SOA is SOAP and going into the same more or less pertinent comparisons between the two (SOAP and REST that is) etc etc. So just to clear up my confusion: Is ROA a specific form of doing SOA?

• How to calculate production when player is offline

  What is the best way to do for example food growth based on how many food buildings you have? Lets say I have a webbased game where you can build a farm wich generates 60 food units per hour. A player has 1 farm in his possession. What is the best way to keep on producing these units even when the player is offline? Should I do the math when the player get's back online again? If so..how can I do this without having to save his last online time every 5 seconds so I can do some maths with it when he logs back in (datetime.now - lastonlinetime)? Next thing is when the player is online, should I refresh his resource count every 5 seconds or so by going to the database and back? This would seem weird to do for every logged on player. • Needs management tool for .java files

  When I open the src file in the project folder in Package Explorer in Eclipse, it says the following: Error retrieving content description for resource '/GuiAdd/src/GuiAdd.Java.' Now, the directories of the source projects shown in Eclipse Package explorer doesn't always have the source file to link to, causing this message. I need a way to sync the folders in the correct directory without overwriting the newest ones. Some source files I project files of the root which the Package explorer links to may be the correct versions but other source files in the root may not have the latest source or any source. I am not using svn/git or other depository programs.

  The best intentions were having me at perhaps posting more than twice a month, and here we are and … well it has been busy. There has been a lot of SharePoint 2010 already in this first number of weeks of the year, a good amount of TFS 2010, but even better working quite actively on two topics that I enjoy quite a bit … Windows Azure and Application Lifecycle Management.  And there is more to come around those two. Through the influencers program with Geekswithblogs and Discountasp.net I got access to a hosted TFS solution that I am currently testing and will be posting my findings and documenting a good amount of information on that process. Another great resource has been fpweb.net, and there will be more details on this too.  Pretty exciting stuff! That is what is going on and what will be coming on here shortly.

• Cannot boot: "No init found. Try passing init=bootarg"

  After losing power, my machine rebooted to this error: “error: no init found. Try passing init=bootarg” Per similar threads on this site and others, I've tried booting from a CD and selecting "Try Ubuntu". Then open a terminal and typing: sudo fsck-y /dev/sda1. The response is: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1. Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program? This is on Ubuntu 10.10. Any ideas on what I can try next?

• Can not export JARS in lwjgl!

  I did it before but for some reason it's doing the stupid problem again. I want to export as a regular Jar file, not a folder full of files. I export it like in Oskar Veerhoak. cmd says Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Resource not found: res/F lubberFlap.png at org.newdawn.slick.util.ResourceLoader.getResourceAsStream(ResourceLoa der.java:69) at com_FlubberSpace.MainFS.main(MainFS.java:118) I tested it out with my other project with the same code pretty much. This is how I load my Textures wood = TextureLoader.getTexture("PNG", ResourceLoader.getResourceAsStream("res/wood.png")); of course it works fine in eclipse but not after export. I havn't tried giving the previous game its' own project, I have it in a package. Can someone record how to export properly? I want a jar file that you just double click to start it. I also want it so nobody can extract the files and see my classes and res.

• After upgrade my webcam mic records fast, high pitched, and squeaky only in Skype (maybe Sound Recorder problem too)

  After an upgrade to 11.10 which probably also updated Skype to 2.2.35 (not sure because I never checked the version before) the sound that comes back from an echo test is very high pitched and squeaky. I'm not sure if when in a call if the other person can't hear or just doesn't know what they are hearing. I am using a USB Logitech C250 Audacity records fine, gmail video chat works fine, but if I start sound recorder I get a "Could not negotiate format", followed by "Could not get/set settings from/on resource". I don't know if this is a Skype problem or a wider Pulse problem. My only real needs are the gmail and Audacity, though I have a couple of contacts that I can only Skype with.

• Understanding how to go from a scene to what's actually rendered to screen in OpenGL?

  I want something that explains step by step how, after setting up a simple scene I can go from that 'world' space, to what's finally rendered on my screen (ie, actually implement something). I need the resource to clearly show how to derive and set up both orthographic and perspective projection matrices... basically I want to thoroughly understand what's going on behind the scenes and not plug in random things without knowing what they do. I've found lots of half explanations, presentation slides, walls of text, etc that aren't really doing much for me. I have a basic understanding of linear algebra/matrix transforms, and a rough idea of what's going on when you go from model space - screen, but not enough to actually implement it in code.

Is there any proof or argument that teams become much more productive by adding more people? I am looking for answers that can be supported by facts and references if possible. What I'm thinking about is that existing devs have to teach the new ones (thus losing overall development time), and then the new developers have to study the code (and tasks) before they can become fully productive.
