  • Recommended ADSL/ADSL2 router that supports PPTP VPN dial-out, 802.11n and gigabit ethernet?

    I'm looking for a new router to provide a VPN tunnel for my home network. My plan is to pass all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN provided by the router, which should ensure that the connection stays alive and only passes traffic over that protocol. I'm normally quite a fan of Draytek routers, and their 2710n does seem to feature VPN dial-out but it lacks Gigabit ports (though I can make do with that if the VPN support is good enough). Has anyone got any suggestions or personal experience in a similar setup? I'm happy to consider anything that supports dd-wrt (as I believe that supports VPN-out, though I may be wrong). Bonus points for models available in the UK.

Trying to do this with gpedit at Computer Configuration Administrative Templates Network SSL Configuration Settings SSL Cipher Suite Order is a problem because the new list goes over the tool's character limit. Is there anyway to overcome this limit so I don't have to keep the current priority or omit something from the list?

  • Switched to xubuntu, unity theme wont go away

    I got fed up with unity and decided to switch to xubuntu, following the instructions on this thread. Almost everything went well, and I'm much happier with the system. but the window borders from the unity theme are still being used, overriding the xubuntu themes. I've uninstalled all the unity stuff that I can find. I have, however, kept compiz for some of its functionality. I note that if I disable the "Window Decoration" plugin the whole border disappears leaving nothing behind. I want to have normal xubuntu borders. (note that stuff like chromium that handles its own borders displays correctly) I'll gladly give more details, or upload screenshots. Just let me know what information would be helpful.     I installed httpd using make. But i cant find any remove/uninstall method in README or INSTALL files. Also, i searched the http://apache.org docs. There also there is no mention of uninstalling using make. Actually, i didnt pass the PREFIX value, and it got installed into /usr/local/apache/. Is it fine?   • gnome-terminal — get path by draging files into terminal

    I use colinux, see http://www.colinux.org/ ; I used the ubuntu image (ubuntu without desktop environment) and install the packages gdm ?x-window-system-core and gnome-core and update to 10.04. the default user ( which is the only one user) is root. When I try to drag a file into gnome-terminal, I don't get the path of this file, instead the image of this file just came back to the original place. Anyone knows why this happened?

    Is there a Linux equivalent to the Mac OS X command fs_usage? According to the man page it does the following: "report system calls and page faults related to filesystem activity in real-time". I suppose one option would be to use strace and filter the data, however the fs_usage command allows all the processes running on the system to be "traced" at the same time. I'll need dropbox to run as the dropbox user, from the dropbox users home directory.   • Intel Wireless 4965AGN not achieving N throughput when connected to an Airport Express N network

    I have an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adaptor in my laptop (HP Pavillion dv2000 series) which is connecting to a 5Ghz-only 802.11n network provided by an Apple Airport Express. The network is using WPA2 encryption. My desktop is also connected the Airport, via a Linksys WUSB600N USB adaptor. Both are running with the latest drivers, and the Airport is running the latest firmware. The Airport is also configured to use wide channels. The problem I have is that I never get throughput above 4MB/s when transferring files between the two machines. Even a pessimistic calculation shows a 270Mbps network as being capable of transfer rates at well above 10MB/s. I'm pretty sure I've isolated the issue to being the Intel adaptor, as wiring the desktop to the AP, and using the Linksys adaptor on the laptop immediately yielded speeds limited by the 100MB/s ethernet connection. I know that 802.11n is still a draft standard, and so mixing kit from different manufacturers can easily lead to poor results, but I was just wondering if anybody else out there has had success with this Intel adaptor on an N network? Or even better, connecting it to an Airport Express? Can anybody give me any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue? I should also mention that the Airport Express doesn't allow you to manually specify channels when running in N mode, and that I've been able to rule out interference from other Wireless LANs by scanning. There aren't any other 5GHz networks in my area. All ideas welcome! Update: A while later, I've just updated to the most recent drivers for both the Intel chip in the laptop, and the USB adaptor. Unfortunately this hasn't improved things :(. If anybody has any advice it would be be gratefully received.

  • No internet connection using Edimax routers

    I have two computers connected to a router, connected to my ADSL modem by PPPoE. One of those computrs use Windows XP, the other uses Windows 7. The computer using Windows 7 keeps getting limited or no connectivity, and I can't use it to connect to the internet. Connecting the computer to the modem without the router 'in the way' worked, and I was able to use the internet - which led me to believe that the problem is with my router. However, I have changed my router, and the problem persists. I am really lost on how to approach this problem. Possible leads: when I view the network information, I see that my computer is connected to 'Multiple Networks'. One of those is "Network 4" (probably my router), and the other is Unidentified network. I don't know how to make the "Unidentified Network" disappear, or why is it even there in the first place. When I try using "ipconfig", I have two default gateway IPs. The first is 0.0.0.0, and the second is the IP of my router (192.168.2.1). The first router was Edimax BR-6204Wg. The second one I've tried connecting is BR-6424n. Any ideas?

    I have two NVidia graphics cards: Quadro NVS 295 (PCI Express, dual DisplayPort outputs) GeForce FX 5200 (PCI, DVI and VGA outputs) I have three identical monitors, two on DisplayPort and one on DVI. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy (and cannot currently dist-upgrade for separate reasons). I use the "nvidia" driver. What's new is the GeForce card and the third monitor. I currently have the dual DisplayPort monitors working fine.     Situation: we plan on using PHP's GnuPG extension to encrypt/decrypt files. Currently we've setup some test cases, using keys generated with GPG. The generated files reside in: /Users/username/.gnupg/ I am able to get keyinfo for the key I want to use to encrypt/decrypt, but when I attempt to use addencryptkey, I get: (E_WARNING: 2): gnupg::addencryptkey() [gnupg.addencryptkey]: get_key failed I think this is due to the permissions on the ~/.gnupg folder & enclosed files. The files are owned by me - username, but apache runs as www. A few days ago I did have this working, but it seems each time I use GPG Keychain Access to import / export a key, the folder's permissions are changed. Question: What are the exact permissions required to allow PHP's GnuPG to add encrypt & decrypt keys?

  • Laptop Asus P50IJ with Intel 4500M GMA output going to a Dell 1907FP external monitor will not allow

    Hello - I just purchased an Asus P50IJ-X2 laptop which has a Intel GMA 4500M video card running Windows7. At work I output this laptop to a Dell 1907FP LCD which has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Not matter what I do the Windows will not allow the laptop to set a resolution higher than 1024x768 to this LCD monitor. Ive even gone to the extent of downloading PowerStrip (I'd post a link but Im new and can only enter 1 url, if you google for powerstrip its the first option) to create a custom driver for my monitor thinking Windows was having a hard time seeing the available resolutions it would accept. However, powerstrip read the registery and properly sees the monitor and what its capable of so Im now at a complete loss as to why Windows7 will not allow me to set/use a 1280x1024 resolution for this external monitor (as my last laptop did running Vista). The Intel documentation (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-integrated-graphics/) indicates that the GMA 4500M should be able to run up to a 2560x1600 max res. The Dell 1907FP specification states it can run up to a 1280x1024 res. But no matter what the computer will not allow me to set higher than a 1024x768. I'm completely baffled but I would really like to be able to output this laptop to a reasonable resolution, 1024x768 makes me feel like I'm using my mom's computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!   • Problem removing US keyboard layout from input languages

    I'm working on English (UK) version of Windows 7, my second input language is Russian. Since installation of Windows I have removed US keyboard layout and set LEFT ALT+SHIFT as input switcher. Everything was fine until now. Recently I noticed that my switch combination does not always work. I opened language select bar and found there English (US) keyboard layout. I went to settings and found that in General Tab there is only two languages available, US was not listed. I decided to add US layout manually and remove it after. This operation went as expected, US layout disappeared from language bar. But after few hours it appeared again. I started "googling" and found that I'm not alone. On Microsoft forum I found suggestion to remove US layout as I did before and than copy all settings to all profiles. It's look like some service are adding US layout on it's own, but I have no idea which one. Does any one know how to fix this issue?

Now I cannot ssh from my laptop ( connected to linksys wifi) to the computers behind dd-wrt wifi bridge. I am able to ping the individual computers behind the dd-wrt bridge. When it comes to ssh or telnet to the computers , it is blocked. What can I do to make dd-wrt bridge to open up all ports in the dd-wrt bridge ?

  • Permission denied when using mv in Windows 7 Cygwin

    I have Cygwin installed on Windows 7 in a windows domain sign-on environment. I can run most typical commands without issue, but I cannot for the life of me use the "mv" command to move or rename files, regardless of the file or directory. I can copy and create files without issue. +-[12:27:57]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> pwd /tmp +-[12:27:58]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> touch test.txt +-[12:28:02]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> mv test.txt hello -bash: /usr/bin/mv: Permission denied I have already tried running Cygwin terminal as Administrator and the problem is the same. I'm open to workarounds, such as trying another exe for moving files and redirecting the mv command to it. Moving files works in the Windows Command Prompt.

    So I got a dying Western Digital hard drive here and I have a new Western Digital hard drive to transfer all the data to. I have the new HDD hooked up by a SATA to USB. I want to transfer all the pictures, etc to the new HDD. I am unable to because of the CRC error. I have ran chkdsk /f /r and it didnt work because the drive is just simply dying. What tool will let me bypass CRC and continue on with the copying? OS: Vista Home Prem. 32bit

    I would like to use rsync to backup my website to my local computer (OS X). I started of with this guide and got pretty far. I use the following rsync-line: rsync -PzrlptgD --del --delete-excluded -r --rsync-path=~/bin/rsync user@server:~/ /local/backup/folder/ I wanted to use the -a option (same as rlptgoD) but it crashes as soon as I use the -o flag. receiving file list ... rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [receiver=2.6.9] If I skip the --owner flag it copies the files but I'm not really sure what difference it makes (I've tried to read up on it but found nothing) Should I just skip using the --owner flag?   • Ubuntu/Nvidia lists DVI dual cable as single

    I have an NVidia Quadro FX 880M graphics card, from which I am trying to drive 2 monitors: my internal laptop montior (15.6", 1920x1080, Nvidia driver says it's running via DisplayPort) and an external 27" monitor (Dell U2711, 2560x1440 native resolution, via DVI). I've hooked the dual DVI cable to the dual DVI port on my dock (Dell PR03X) and installed the proprietary NVidia driver, but I cannot seem to get the full 2560x1440 out of the larger 27" external monitor. Looking at the NVidia driver settings, the monitor's connection is reported as a single DVI cable, rather than a dual one, which would explain the reduced resolution. Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this? What can I do to make full use of my new monitor? (Possibly) Relevant Information: There is no DVI port on the laptop itself, but one is provided via the dock. The laptop and dock both provide a DisplayPort jack, but I have been unable to get this working on either w/ the monitor. I did have the nouveau driver installed when I installed the nvidia proprietary driver, but have since removed it (no change in the monitor situation when I removed it). The 27" reports a max resolution of 1680x1050. Thanks, Joe
