• Started wrong with a project. Should I start over?

  I'm a beginner web developer (one year of experience). A couple of weeks after graduating, I got offered a job to build a web application for a company whose owner is not much of a tech guy. He recruited me to avoid theft of his idea, the high cost of development charged by a service company, and to have someone young he can trust onboard to maintain the project for the long run (I came to these conclusions by myself long after being hired). Cocky as I was back then, with a diploma in computer science, I accepted the offer thinking I can build anything. I was calling the shots. After some research I settled on PHP, and started with plain PHP, no objects, just ugly procedural code. Two months later, everything was getting messy, and it was hard to make any progress. The web application is huge. So I decided to check out an MVC framework that would make my life easier. That's where I stumbled upon the cool kid in the PHP community: Laravel. I loved it, it was easy to learn, and I started coding right away. My code looked cleaner, more organized. It looked very good. But again the web application was huge. The company was pressuring me to deliver the first version, which they wanted to deploy, obviously, and start seeking customers. Because Laravel was fun to work with, it made me remember why I chose this industry in the first place - something I forgot while stuck in the shitty education system. So I started working on small projects at night, reading about methodologies and best practice. I revisited OOP, moved on to object-oriented design and analysis, and read Uncle Bob's book Clean Code. This helped me realize that I really knew nothing. I did not know how to build software THE RIGHT WAY. But at this point it was too late, and now I'm almost done. My code is not clean at all, just spaghetti code, a real pain to fix a bug, all the logic is in the controllers, and there is little object oriented design. I'm having this persistent thought that I have to rewrite the whole project. However, I can't do it... They keep asking when is it going to be all done. I can not imagine this code deployed on a server. Plus I still know nothing about code efficiency and the web application's performance. On one hand, the company is waiting for the product and can not wait anymore. On the other hand I can't see myself going any further with the actual code. I could finish up, wrap it up and deploy, but god only knows what might happen when people start using it. What do you think I should do?

• Why should I not do a masters degree

  I have left university on July 2010 where I studied web design (as we all know you learn more by your self but that’s not the issue at the moment). Since then I have not managed to find a job (apart from a one month work experience), from the way things are going, and by taking into account the fact that all my university friends are in the same situation, I don’t think that I am going to find a job soon (within the industry) Now as we all do, even though I don’t have a job, I am still working on personal projects and try to keep up to date (I don’t need a job or uni to do this) – but I am thinking, because there is not work available, would it be worth going back to uni for a master degree? I know I don’t need it and I know that is unlikely that I will learn anything important, as I believe in self learning, and in most cases it is a lot more effective (but I have to say I don’t mind going back to school) The only reason I am thinking of doing the master is, (and this is where I need your help): If it takes me a year to get a job, then on the interview, would the employer think “what the hell did this guy do since he left university” – now if I go to university that would solve this problem. Or I’m I making up a problem that does not exist Plus, I know that employers need examples of sites that I have been working on, at the moment I only have 3 (as when working on personal projects, where their is not time limit I tend drag things in order to get them perfect, and they never get perfect) – so by going back to uni, then this problem maybe solved I said all this as I have read a lot about the fact that you don’t need to have a masters degree to work on web design market (and I totally agree) but considering my concern, the question is should I do a masters course to avoid just spending hours in my room working and learning in my own (but that it would be hard to convince employers that I was really learning in my room) Maybe because I’m still young age 22 not that old anyway :), but I don’t have the “dream” of being rich, so if I were to tell the truth I don’t really care of the fact that I don’t have a job (at the moment), because regardless, I am working on what I love every day, but I know that in the future when I will need the job I may find it harder to get one, if I neglect doing so now Every time I ask a question that I’m not sure about, I keep going on and on, but I really hope you get what I am trying to get across. By the way the course that I am looking at for a masters says that it would teach me how to do these: e-commerce e-government e-science e-learning I don’t know any of them, a part from e-commerce Thanks

• My co-worker has not been doing such a good job for the past decade. What do I do? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I approach a coworker about his or her code quality? I started working with him almost a decade ago and back then I had never really programmed before, being a young hardware engineer. Right now however I have made quite some progress in all areas being part of software design and i am much, much more skilled than my co-worker who is 15 years older and has been programming more than twice as long. He is super nice and definitely smart enough, but lately his lack of skill and performance are starting to drag me down because we're more and more working on the same codebase. And soon we are going to do a quite ambitious start from scratch creating a whole new hard/software system. I feel it is time to address all issues now, but i do not know how to start. Here are some of the things that I would like to see him improve on: no consistent usage of style, spaces nor tabs (eg if(something ) a =b ) adds newlines around pieces of code to make it easier to read, then commits those with messages like 'no changes made' overall commit messages are useless and so are most of the comments, if there are any (eg 'remove solves for bug Rik' if Rik reported a bug). There is no function/class documentation. lots of spelling errors, in both English and native language, which sometimes are mixed 6/7/8 level deep deep nesting is no exception, a lot of functions start with one level already like if(ptr!=Null){ even when ptr is the result of allocation via new in the constructor numerous source files have over 10k lines of those lines, a major part is simply a result of copy-pasting functionality instead of using a function. This includes copying comments so we end up with 50 occurrences of var=NULL; //TODO TEST this!!!!!!! another part is hundreds of lines of dead code knows what versioning does, yet comments out old code and places new code underneath it when making changes coding skills are below par, especially for the type of rather high precision applications we do. Yet somehow, after a lot of trying and testing, stuff starts to work. But then breaks again some time later because every change casues a waterfall effect. violates every single item in the C++ FAQ lite, practices every bad practice I can think of still doesn't know how to properly use the debugger, but spends hours inspecting messy logfiles in notepad on a tiny laptop screen. Does not make any adjustments to the settings of the software he uses. Never uses keyboard shortcuts. does not seem to progress or learn new things at all. Work rather slow, mostly due to the lack of planning and incorrect usage of tools. How does one deal with this? For starters, how do I make him aware of all these problems? Should I tell the staff about it? And the next step, how to get him to learn new things and adopt another way of working?

• Help writing server script to ban IP's from a list

  I have a VPS that I use as an openvpn and web server. For some reason, my apache log files are filled with thousands of these hack attempts: "POST /xmlrpc.php HTTP/1.0" 404 395 These attack attempts fill up 90% of my logs. I think it's a WordPress vulnerability they're looking for. Obviously they are not successful (I don't even have Wordpress on my server), but it's annoying and probably resource consuming as well. I am trying to write a bash script that will do the following: Search the apache logs and grab the offending IP's (even if they try it once), Sort them into a list with each unique IP on a seperate line, And then block them using the IP table rules. I am a bash newb, and so far my script does everything except Step 3. I can manually block the IP's, but that's tedious and besides, this is Linux and it's perfectly capable of doing it for me. I also want the script to be customizable so that I (or anyone else who wants to use it) can change the variables to suit whatever situation I/they may deal with in the future. What I'm having trouble with is understanding how to use line of the result file as a seperate variable to do something like: ufw deny $IP1 $IP2 $IP3, ect Any ideas? Thanks.

  In a test project I've managed to AutoGenerate WPF DataGrid columns in the following scenario, where the data is stored in a Dictionary and binding is performed via PropertyDescriptors: public class People:List<Person>{ ... } public class Person:Dictionary<string,string>,INotifyPropertyChanged,ICustomTypeDescriptor { } The problem I'm having is in my real life project I'm using MVVM so it's *People*ViewModel which inherits ViewModelBase and hence can't inherit List<Person>. I've tried implementing IList<Person> instead with an internal List<Person> and explicitly setting the DataContext to an IList<Person> reference but that didn't work. I've seen a similar post on binding a win forms DataGridView here, so I'm wondering if the same sort of logic applies in WPF and primarily, what exactly causes the ICustomTypeDescriptor implementation to be picked up when inheriting List<T> that is missing when you simply implement IList<T> instead.

• Disable browser 'Save Password' functionality

  One of the joys of working for a government healthcare agency is having to deal with all of the paranoia around dealing with PHI (Protected Health Information). Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing everything possible to protect people's personal information (health, financial, surfing habits, etc.), but sometimes people get a little too jumpy. Case in point: One of our state customers recently found out that the browser provides the handy feature to save your password. We all know that it has been there for a while and is completely optional and is up to the end user to decide whether or not it is a smart decision to use or not. However, there is a bit of an uproar at the moment and we are being demanded to find a way to disable that functionality for our site. Question: Is there a way for a site to tell the browser not to offer to remember passwords? I've been around web development a long time but don't know that I have come across that before.   Many people like to think of building software as constructing a building so we have terms like building blocks and architecture. However, lately I've been to a couple of talks and most people say this analogy is wrong especially around the idea of having a non-coding software architect in a project. In my experience, good software architects are those who also write code so they won't design things that only looks good on paper. I've worked with several Architecture Astronauts, who have either limited or outdated experience in programming. These architecture astronauts quite often missed out critical details in their design and cause more harm than good in a project. This makes me wonder what are the differences between constructing a software and a building? How come in the building industry they can have architects who probably never build a house in their life and purely handles design work but not in the software development field?

• Exchange Server 2010: move mailboxes from recoveded and mounted edb to user’s mailbox

  One of our exchange servers crashed, and I am trying to recover the mailboxes. We had 1 exchange 2003 server named "apex" and 1 exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise. the exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise" crashed. I created a new exchange 2010 server named "Providence". I ran the command on Providence: New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name JBCMail -Server Providence -EdbFilePath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147\Mailbox Database 0579285147.edb" -LogFolderPath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147" this command executed and finished without error I then ran the command: eseutil /p E00 this command was executed from the below directory: c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147 I then mounted the JBCMail with the mount command note: I do not have my full typed command. Inside my Exchange Management Console (EMC) I can view the new mailbox database named JBCMail. The JBCMail database is show as mounted on the exchange server named Providence. I can see the crashed Exchange server named 2008Exchange. In the EMC the crashed exchange server states the Copy Status under ServerConfiguration-Mailbox is ServiceDown. From here I need to recover three mailboxes The mail boxes are on the apex server. How do I move the mailboxs from apex to Providence? How do I restore the mailboxes from JBCmail mounted database to the user's mailbox? I do not fully understand how to use the Restore-Mailbox command because when I use this command it tries to restore the mailbox to the dead apex server. • Android: databinding when using a ArrayAdapter: possible?

  I need some simple databinding for a Spinner. I want to display 2 items for each dropdownitem. So when the user clicks the spinner I get a list like: ------------------- Name 123456 ------------------- Name 123456 ------------------- I understand this can be done when using a Cursor, according to the databinding info on android dev. Like: SimpleCursorAdapter adapter2 = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.my_custom_spinner_item_layout, cur, new String[] {People.NAME, People.ID}, new int[] {android.R.id.text1, android.R.id.text2}); However, I don't get my data from a database, so I don't use a cursor, I use a ArrayAdapter. Unfortunately it looks like there is no support for databinding with this adapter. Is there a way to do this?

• Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

  Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people. • How to write files in specific order?

  Okay, here's a weird problem -- My wife just bought a 2014 Nissan Altima. So, I took her iTunes library and converted the .m4a files to .mp3, since the car audio system only supports .mp3 and .wma. So far so good. Then I copied the files to a DOS FAT-32 formatted USB thumb drive, and connected the drive to the car's USB port, only to find all of the tracks were out of sequence. All tracks begin with a two digit numeric prefix, i.e., 01, 02, 03, etc. So you would think they would be in order. So I called Nissan Connect support and the rep told me that there is a known problem with reading files in the correct order. He said the files are read in the same order they are written. So, I manually copied a few albums with the tracks in a predetermined order, and sure enough he was correct. So I copied about 6 albums for testing, then changed to the top level directory and did a "find . music.txt". Then I passed this file to rsync like this: rsync -av --files-from=music.txt . ../Marys\ Music\ Sequenced/ The files looked like they were copied in order, but when I listed the files in order of modified time, they were in the same sequence as the original files: ../Marys Music Sequenced/Air Supply/Air Supply Greatest Hits ls -1rt 01 Lost In Love.mp3 04 Every Woman In The World.mp3 03 Chances.mp3 02 All Out Of Love.mp3 06 Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You).mp3 05 The One That You Love.mp3 08 I Want To Give It All.mp3 07 Sweet Dreams.mp3 11 Young Love.mp3 So the question is, how can I copy files listed in a file named music.txt, and copy them to a destination, and ensure the modification times are in the same sequence as the files are listed?

  After reading this: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/csrf/#how-to-use-it I came to the conclusion that it is not valid to use this except for when you trust the person who is using the page which enlists it. Is this correct? I guess I don't really understand when it's safe to use this because of this statement: This should not be done for POST forms that target external URLs, since that would cause the CSRF token to be leaked, leading to a vulnerability. The reason it's confusing is that to me an "external URL" would be on that isn't part of my domain (ie, I own www.example.com and put a form that posts to www.spamfoo.com. This obviously can't be the case since people wouldn't use Django for generating forms that post to other people's websites, but how could it be true that you can't use CSRF protection on public forms (like a login form)?

  Using an NSPredicate for an array is rather straight forward using filteredArrayUsingPredicate:. How is this done for key-path values? Meaning, I have an array of objects (in this case, the objects are of the same type). The objects each have an instance variable called name. As per the documentation, it says to do the following: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat: @"ANY employees.firstName like 'Matthew'"]; Is that -also- used in filteredArrayUsingPredicate? What if I have an array of People objects? does that mean I would use: NSArray *allPeopleObjects; // pre-populated NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY people.name like 'Foo'"]; NSArray *matching = [allPeopleObjects filteredArrayUsingPredicate:predicate]; Documentation is a bit lacking in that department.

  I've looked at sites and MSDN documentation but I still don't understand the last parameter of PostMessage(). On forums in which people ask how to use PostMessage, people reply with one of two implementations: PostMessage(WindowHandle, WM_KEYDOWN, KeyCode, MapVirtualKey(KeyCode, 0) << 16); PostMessage(WindowHandle, WM_KEYDOWN, KeyCode, 0); What's the difference? Why can the last parameter be left as 0 in some instances, but has to be 'shifted' and all that in other instances? Just a quick question. Don't need essay replies (although they would be much appreciated). Any insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I need an sql query to select some items from a table based on some condition which is based on a category field. As an example consider a list of people and I fetch the people from a particular age group from the database. I want to check if the result contains at least one result from each of a number of categories. If not I want to modify the age group by extending it and check the results again. This is repeated until I get an age group for which one result is present for each category. Right now i am doing this by analyzing the results and modifying the sql query. So a number of sql select queries are sent. What is the most efficient way of doing this? I am invoking the select queries from a java program using jdbc. I am using mysql database.

• Remote iPhone / xCode application development?

  4 java developers are new to iPod Touch/iPhone app development. They have an idea for an app. They have never used Xcode or Macs before. Instead of spending money for a new iMac or Mac Mini for each of them, my boss would like to sell them a $999 Apple server, hosted at a facility connected a single T1 line, and have all 4 people work remotely in Xcode. Is this feasible? Is anyone doing anything like this? Specifically, is 1 T1 enough for realistic remote app development? Would they have to work in black & white via Logmein or Gotomeeting to get decent speed? Can four people work remotely together on an Xcode project at the same time? Do they absolutely need their own Macs to connect their iPod Touches or iPhones physically to, or can they connect to their existing PCs with iTunes and install their in-development apps that way?

• How can I prevent tab characters etc. from being pasted into an asp.net textbox?

  Hello, I'd like to have an asp.net textbox that people can paste content into and it works like notepad, i.e. no formatting or special characters will get entered. I take text and pass it to a web service which manipulates it and converts it into a tab delimited file. The problem I've experienced is sometimes people copy from MS Word and paste that content in and somehow even the tab characters etc. get passed to the web service. I run routines now to strip that information out but it would be so much easier if the textbox on the web page didn't capture anything but the text itself, i.e. visible characters (numbers, letters, punctuation). Anyone have a suggestion to have a textbox that doesn't capture formatting and non-visual characters? Thank you.

  I'm using this library: jsinq. I want to create a new object using subqueries. For example, in .NET LINQ, I could do something like this: from a in Attendances where a.SomeProperty = SomeValue select new { .Property1 = a.Property1, .Property2 = a.Property2, .Property3 = (from p in People where p.SomeProperty = a.Property3 select p) } such that I get a list of ALL people where Property3 value matches the attendance's Property3 value in EACH object returned in the list. I didn't see any sample of this in the docs or on the playground. Made a couple tries of it and didn't have any luck. Anybody know if this is possible and how to?

• WebApps tendency

  There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming. Thanks.

• how to organise my abstraction?

  I have a problem that I can't decide how to best handle, so I'm asking for advice. Please bear with me if my question isn't clear, it is possiblybecause I'm not sure exacly how to solve! I have a set of function that I have in a class. These function are a set of lowest commonality. To be able to run this I need to generate certain info. But this info can arrive with my class from one of 2 routes. I'll try to summarise my situation.... Lets say that I have a class as follows. public class onHoliday(){ private Object modeOfTravel; private Object location; public onHoliday(Object vehicle, Location GPScoords) { private boolean haveFun(){//function to have fun, needs 4 people }//end haveFun() } } Lets imagine I can get to my holiday either by car or by bike. my haveFun() function is dependant my type of vehicle. But only loosely. I have another function that determines my vehicle type, and extracts the required values. for example if I send a car I may get 4 people in one go, but if I send I bike I need at least 2 to get the required 4 I have currently 2 options: Overload my constructor, so as I can send either 2 bikes or a single car into it, then I can call one of 2 intermediate functions (to get the names of my 4 people for instance) before I haveFun() - this is what I am currently doing. split the 2 constructors into 2 separate classes, and repeat my haveFun() in a third class, that becomes an object of my 2 other classes. my problem with this is that my intermediate functions are all but a few lines of code, and I don't want to have them in a separate file! (I allways put classes in separate files!) Please note, my haveFun() isn't something that I'm going to need outside of these 2 classes, or even being onHoliday (ie. there is no chance of me doing some haveFun() over a weekend or of an evening!). I have though about putting haveFun() into an interface, but it seems a bit worthless having an interface with only a single method! Even then I would have to have the method in both of the classes -one for bike and another for car! I have thought about having my onHoliday class accepting any object type, but then I don't want someone accidentally sending in a boat to my onHoliday class (imagine I can't swim, so its not about to happen). It may be important to note that my onHoliday class is package private, and final. It in fact is only accessed via other 'private methods' in other classes, and has only private methods itself. • Use super with before_validation.

  I have this code in my every model. Class people def before_validation @attributes.each do |key,value| self[key] = nil if value.blank? end end end Now i want to put my loop in separate module. Like Module test def before_validation @attributes.each do |key,value| self[key] = nil if value.blank? end end end And i want to call this before_validation this way Class people include test def before_validation super .....Here is my other logic part..... end end Are there any way to do it like that in rails??

• Does my fat-client application belong in the MVC pattern?

  The web-based application I’m currently working on is growing arms and legs! It’s basically an administration system which helps users to keep track of bookings, user accounts, invoicing etc. It can also be accessed via a couple of different websites using a fairly crude API. The fat-client design loosely follows the MVC pattern (or perhaps MVP) with a php/MySQL backend, Front Controller, several dissimilar Page Controllers, a liberal smattering of object-oriented and procedural Models, a confusing bunch of Views and templates, some JavaScripts, CSS files and Flash objects. The programmer in me is a big fan of the principle of “Separation of Concerns” and on that note, I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to separate and combine the various concerns as the project grows and more people contribute to it. The problem we’re facing is that although JavaScript (or Flash with ActionScript) is normally written with the template, hence part of the View and decoupled from the Controller and Model, we find that it actually encompasses the entire MVC pattern... Swap an image with an onmouseover event - that’s Behaviour. Render a datagrid - we’re manipulating the View. Send the result of reordering a list via AJAX - now we’re in Control. Check a form field to see if an email address is in a valid format - we’re consulting the Model. Is it wise to let the database people write up the validation Model with jQuery? Can the php programmers write the necessary Control structures in JavaScript? Can the web designers really write a functional AJAX form for their View? Should there be a JavaScript overlord for every project? If the MVC pattern could be applied to the people instead of the code, we would end up with this: Model - the database boffins - “SELECT * FROM mind WHERE interested IS NULL” Control - pesky programmers - “class Something extends NothingAbstractClass{…}” View - traditionally the domain of the graphic/web designer - “” …and a new layer: Behaviour - interaction and feedback designer - “CSS3 is the new black…” So, we’re refactoring and I’d like to stick to best practice design, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so would anyone have any hints or tips as to what pattern I should be looking at or any code samples from someone who’s already done the dirty work? As the programmer guy, how can I rewrite the app for backend and front end whilst keeping the two separate? And before you ask, yes I’ve looked at Zend, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, etc., and no, they don’t seem to cross the boundary between server logic and client logic!
