• Need a Security Scenario for asp.net webservice

  I have developed a .Net 3.5 windows forms application. I also want to design a website that has a webservice with multiple Webmethods to query the database on the host machine. I want the webservice to be called ONLY through my winapp and my website! And I don't want any other people to be able to call and use my webservice but only some people who have access to the windows application that I have developed. I need a good security scenario for this! I truly appreciate anyone who can help me because this is my first experience of developing a webservice and I really need it to be as secure as I mentioned!

• Explaining persistent data structures in simple terms

  I'm working on a library for Python that implements some persistent data structures (mainly as a learning exercise). However, I'm beginning to learn that explaining persistent data structures to people unfamiliar with them can be difficult. Can someone help me think of an easy (or at least the least complicated) way to describe persistent data structures to them? I've had a couple of people tell me that the documentation that I have is somewhat confusing. (And before anyone asks, no I don't mean persistent data structures as in persisted to the file system. Google persistent data structures if you're unclear on this.)

• UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

  I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them.   Hi! The question is about your perception of programming activity. How hard/exacting this task is? There is much buzz about programming nowadays, people say that programmers are smart, very technical and abstract at a time, know much about world, psychology etc.. They say, that programmers got really powerful brain thing, cause there is much to keep in consideration simultaneously again with much information folded into each other associatively (up 10 levels of folding they say))) Still, there are some terms to specify at our own.. So that is the question: What do you think about programming in general? Is it hard? Is it 'for everyone' or for the particular kind of people only? How much non-CS background do you need to program (just to program, really; enterprise applications for example)? How long is the learning curve? (again, for programming in general) And another bunch of random questions: - If you were not to like/love programming, would that be a serious trouble bothering your current employment? - If you were to start from the beginning, would you chose that direction this time? - What other areas (jobs or maybe hobbies) are comparable to programming in the way they can explode someone's lovely brain? - Is 'non turing-complete programming' (SQL, XML, etc.) comparable to what we do or is it really way easier, less requiring, cheap and akin to cooking :)? Well, the essence is: How would you describe programming activity WRT to its difficulty? Or, on the other hand: Did you ever catch yourself thinking at some point: OMG, it's sooo hard! I don't know how would I ever program, even carried away this way and doing programming just for fun? It's very interesting to know your opinion, your'e the programmers after all. I mean much people must be exaggerating/speculating about the thing they do not really know about.   I recently got my first programming internship and was extremely excited to finally be able to talk with and interact with fellow programmers. I had this assumption that I would find a bunch of like minded individuals who enjoyed programming and other aspects of geek culture. Unfortunately, I find myself working with normal people who program for a living and never discuss or show interest in programming outside of their work. It is incredibly disappointing, because I do think one of the best ways to progress in life and as a programmer is to talk about what you enjoy with others and to build bonds with people who enjoy similar things. • In search of opinions on web based version control systems

  Hi. Researching various open source, web-based document management/version control systems. I've checked google/questions here, etc... I'm looking for a lightweight web-based (apache) document mgmt/version control app that runs on top of SVN. I need to have the ability to: have multiple users checkin/checkout have a workflow (when userA checks the file in, and finishes the app passes it to the next person, etc... the app needs to allow me to have a structure where the files can be moved as a group. the files will be changed on a monthly basis app needs to have a access/premission control system. some people can see certain files, and perform certain actions on the files I imagine that I'm going to have 40-50 people dealing with the different files. I imagine that I'm going to have 2000-3000 files that have to be massaged. I'd prefer that the app be php based if possible, as opposed to a straight java app. Thanks

• Convert data retrieved from MySQL database into JSON object using Python/Django

  I have a MySQL database called People which contains the following schema <id,name,foodchoice1,foodchoice2>. The database contains a list of people and the two choices of food they wish to have at a party (for example). I want to create some kind of Python web-service that will output a JSON object. An example of output should be like: { "guestlist": [ {"id":1,"name":"Bob","choice1":"chicken","choice2":"pasta"},{"id":2,"name":"Alice","choice1":"pasta","choice2":"chicken"} ], "partyname": "My awesome party", "day": "1", "month": "June", "2010": "null" } Basically every guest is stored into a dictionary 'guestlist' along with their choices of food. At the end of the JSON object is just some additional information that only needs to be mentioned once. The question that I have is regarding the method that I need to utilize to grab the data from my database, and create the JSON object. Do I need to use a standard Model/View structure of Django or can I get away with something that is much simpler since what I need to do is really simple?

I like to use JSDoc notations in my scripts because I know other people will be hacking at it sooner or later. • Windows 7 boot issues

  Ok, I tried to install linux and dual boot my laptop with 7 ultimate. I messed up. When I tried to boot to 7 it said no. Something along the lines of device not found. So I being young and stupid I uninstalled linux which I could boot into, and I still could not boot to windows. Next step was to run the startup fixes from the boot cd. Swing and a miss, I also ran the fixmbr and fixboot. Which brings us up to my current place. I installed 7 again on my blank partition in hopes I could access my other partion. No dice. So my question to yall is how can I fix my original filesystem or at least get to the stuff on it. In the new 7 install the old partion does not even have a drive letter. That is my sad story any help would be apreciated.

  I recently read (and unfortunately forgot where), that the best way to write operator= is like this: foo &operator=(foo other) { swap(*this, other); return *this; } instead of this: foo &operator=(const foo &other) { foo copy(other); swap(*this, copy); return *this; } The idea is that if operator= is called with an rvalue, the first version can optimize away construction of a copy. So when called with a rvalue, the first version is faster and when called with an lvalue the two are equivalent. I'm curious as to what other people think about this? Would people avoid the first version because of lack of explicitness? Am I correct that the first version can be better and can never be worse?

  Hi, image two lists for selecting roles for a new user creation in an administrator frontend. One list has all available roles in it and another has the selected roles in it. Between those lists are buttons to move elements from one list to another. Thus the layout is horizontal with [List] [Buttons] [List]. Now to the question: Should the selected elements be on the left, or the right list? Intuitively some people I asked say, that the selected elements have to be on the right list. But some other people follow some sort of guideline that says, that the more important stuff in a frontend has to be on the left side. Also they think the selected elements are more important than the non-selected and so the selected ones have to be on the left side. Whats your opinion?

  I work at a company with hundreds of people writing software for essentially the same product. The quality of the software has to be high because so many people depend on it (not least the developers themselves). Because of this every major issue has resulted in a new check - either automated or manual. As a result the process of delivering software is becoming ever more burdensome. So that requires more developers which... well you can see it is a vicious circle. We now have a problem with releasing software quickly - the lead time even to change one line of code for a very serious issue is at least one day. However, in each area there is usually a set of tools that get recommended over and over, even though people might individually prefer one member over the others. • What helpful tactics have you employed to keep your development team on-track?

I think that it is pretty specific to programming teams, though, so I've posted it here as opposed to somewhere else. I'm leading a small game development team (four people) as a side project. We are a disjoint team, with everyone in different places, but we do have some of the mainstays of an organized team. I tend to agree with Joel's opinion about when and how to micromanage and know that my team is motivated, but it can be easy to fall off-course when everyone isn't connected in a physical way and doesn't see what other people on the team are doing. Suggestions, feedback, or criticisms are welcome! Edit: I'm managing the team; I'm not looking for automated tools or anything to do my job for me, just ideas for approach or process that might help everyone feel more "connected" and involved.

My e-commerce site has a blog with a lot of content, promoting the products I sell, reviewing them etc. 99% of the posts on the blog link back to the products they are talking about. I'm going to be changing the URL where my ecommerce system is located. Therefore my blog is going to end up sending people to a lot of 404 pages.   I have http://example.com/index.html, which from within the HTML uses JavaScript to call a web services at http://example.com/json/?a=...&b=... The web service returns to index.html a JSON array of information to then be displayed on index.html. Since anyone can view the source code for index.html and see how I'm calling the JSON web services (http://example.com/json/), how do I prevent people from calling my JSON web service directly? Since the web service is essentially an open read into my database, I don't want people to abuse the web service and start DoS my server, fetching more information than they should, etc..

• Remove another user's lock obtained with sp_getapplock on SQL Server

  We have a system that uses sp_getapplock to create an exclusive mutex any time someone opens an order in the GUI. This is used to prevent multiple people from making changes to an order simultaneously. Sometimes people will open an order and go home, leaving it open. This effectively blocks anyone from being able to make changes to the order. I then get emails, calls and end up doing a kill <spid> in enterprise manager. Obviously I've gotten sick of this and want to make a quick self-service webform. The main problem I've run into is that kill requires sysadmin privileges, which I do not want to give to the user that the our website runs as. I have tried sp_releaseapplock but this doesn't let you release another user's lock (even when calling it as a sysadmin). So, finally my question; does anyone know of an alternative method to release a lock that was obtained by another user using sp_getapplock?

• Is it possible to implement any kind of file upload recovery / resumption in a browser?

  The project is a servlet to which people can upload files via, at present, HTTP POST. This is accompanied by Web page(s) providing a front-end to trigger the upload. We have more or less complete control over the servlet, and the Web pages, but don't want to impose any restrictions on the client beyond being a reasonably modern browser with Javascript. No Java applets etc. Files may potentially be large, and a possible use case is mobile devices on less reliable networks. Some people on the project are demanding the ability to resume an upload if the network connection goes down. I don't think this is possible with plain HTTP and Javascript in a browser, but I'd love to be proved wrong. Any suggestions?
