• C++ - Where do i start?

  Hi All, As a bit of a side project while I'm on my summer break from uni, I've decided to have a look at C++, and get the hang of the basics. I'm by no means a programming novice, I've done web development before with PHP and Ruby, and I've done a fair bit of work with compiled languages (Java / C#). However, C++ seems to be a more significant undertaking. Basically I'm wanting pointers to the best resources for learning C++, as well as some idea as to areas I could do with reading up on (That I might not have come across before). • .net configurable business error messages

  Hi all, I need to implement some kind of solution such that in our business logic layer when certain conditions are met an error message is returned. That error message should be configurable either in a file or table that can be edited at run time if needed. I've seen it done before a few ways and it always ends up something like "This error message is {0}" and then when the dev goes the use the message they dont neccesarily know how many (if any) parameters the message needs. Just hoping to leverage off something that may have already been done, I dont think there is a provider or anything already in the .net framework.

• I built my rails app with sqlite and without specifying any db field sizes, Is my app now foobared for production?

  I've been following a lot of good tutorials on building rails apps but I seem to be missing the whole specifying and validating db field sizes part. I love not needing to have to think about it when roughing out an app (I would have never done this with a PHP or ASP.net app). However, now that I'm ready to go to production, I think I might have done myself a disservice by not specifying field sizes as I went. My production db will be MySQL. What is the best practice here? Do I need to go through all of my migration files and specify sizes, update all the models with validation, and update all my form partial views with input max widths? or am I missing a critical step in my development process?

• II7 integrated mode MVC deploy 404 not found on "non-Index" actions

  Hello. Once deployed parts of my web-application stop working. Index-es on each controller do work, other then that yields 404. I understand that nothing particular should be done in integrated mode. I don't know how to proceed with troubleshooting. Some info: App is using default app pool set to integrated mode. WebApp is done in net framework 3.5. I use default routing model. Along web.config in root there is web.config in /View folder referencing HttpNotFoundHandler. OS is Windows Server 2008. Any help is appreciated. Thx.

• Change Message on Sony Reader to “Do not disconnect”

  When I connect a Sony Reader to an USB port “USB connected” is shown on the Reader. When the Sony “Reader Library” software is started this message changes to “Do not disconnect”. I want to implement this in a software tool to. There seems to be no file locked. Perhaps it is done via ebookUsb.dll. Does anybody know how this is done from any programming language? I like to see an example.

• IntentService android download and return file to Activity

  I have a fairly tricky situation that I'm trying to determine the best design for. The basics are this: I'm designing a messaging system with a similar interface to email. When a user clicks a message that has an attachment, an activity is spawned that shows the text of that message along with a paper clip signaling that there is an additional attachment. At this point, I begin preloading the attachment so that when the user clicks on it - it loads more quickly. currently, when the user clicks the attachment, it prompts with a loading dialog until the download is complete at which point it loads a separate attachment viewer activity, passing in the bmp byte array. I don't ever want to save attachments to persistent storage. The difficulty I have is in supporting rotation as well as home button presses etc. The download is currently done with a thread and handler setup. Instead of this, I'd like the flow to be the following: User loads message as before, preloading begins of attachment as before (invisible to user). When the user clicks on the attachment link, the attachment viewer activity is spawned right away. If the download was done, the image is displayed. If not, a dialog is shown in THIS activity until it is done and can be displayed. Note that ideally the download never restarts or else I've wasted cycles on the preload. Obviously I need some persistent background process that is able to keep downloading and is able to call back to arbitrarily bonded Activities. It seems like the IntentService almost fits my needs as it does its work in a background thread and has the Service (non UI) lifecycle. However, will it work for my other needs? I notice that common implementations for what I want to do get a Messenger from the caller Activity so that a Message object can be sent back to a Handler in the caller's thread. This is all well and good but what happens in my case when the caller Activity is Stopped or Destroyed and the currently active Activity (the attachment viewer) is showing? Is there some way to dynamically bind a new Activity to a running IntentService so that I can send a Message back to the new Activity? The other question is on the Message object. Can I send arbitrarily large data back in this package? For instance, rather than send back that "The file was downloaded", I need to send back the byte array of the downloaded file itself since I never want to write it to disk (and yes this needs to be the case). Any advice on achieving the behavior I want is greatly appreciated. I've not been working with Android for that long and I often get confused with how to best handle asynchronous processes over the course of the Activity lifecycle especially when it comes to orientation changes and home button presses...

• IE Hanging on jQuery code

  Here's another clichéd problem, but I couldn't find an exact match to this. I haven't posted any source here, as you can freely see all that is there on the link. :-) Statement:I have a web page at http://agrimgupta.com/antaragni/ Disclaimer: Pardon me for the pathetic coding on that page. ;-) It was done on a very short interval. Improvements will be done at a later stage. Observation: This page is functioning normally on my localhost on all browsers. Problem: IE 8 is crawling (nearly hanging) while loading this page from the website. Although it is working fine on localhost. When on the website, It fails to render the mouseover effects, doing them in almost what seems like a minute. Question: How to resolve this stuck up of IE? It is necessary to resolve this. • Controlled hyperlink hijaxing

  I am working on a web application. I have a data grid with a 'commands' column that has hyperlinks for some common CRUD operations (Edit, Delete, etc). When a user clicks on say the Edit hyperlink, I retrieve the unique identifier for the data grid row and load a modal form dialog (i am using jQuery UI) so the user is able to edit the row data and subsequently close the modal form dialog at which point I refresh the page. Now, before the page is done refreshing, there's a chance that a user might click on the edit link again, and whenever that happens, 'hijaxing' fails. My question is how can i check that if a user clicks on a hyperlink and the page is refreshing, i delay until it is done refreshing, then i allow the 'hijax' to kick in.

• Communication between c++ objects.

  This is an issue, that I have come acrosss earlier. Basically a c++ object has a member object that does some work, once the work is done , a notification needs to made to the parent. What is the most elegant solution to allow this communication. Does being in this position indicate a flaw with the design to begin with? • Jquery: is there a VERY light-weight lightbox available?

  I'm looking for an extremely light-weight lightbox for jquery. i'm trying to create my own but i suck and my fist is about to go through the screen.... i'm talking like 5kb or less.. i know it can be done, and if i knew what i was doing i'd do it... but i'm just done for the day. So, does anyone know of one? something just for images, and nothing else, no fancy crap, no extra weight, one that simply centers the lightbox in the center of the screen with whatever picture was loaded by the link. my screen will thank you...

• Download File from Web C++ (with winsock?)

  I need to download files/read strings from a specified url in C++. I've done some research with this, cURL seems to be the most popular method. Also, I've used it before in PHP. The problem with cURL is that the lib is huge, and my file has to be small. I think you can do it with winsock, but I can't find any simple examples. If you have a simple winsock example, a light cURL/Something else, or anything that could get the job done. I would greatly appreciated. Also, I need this to work with native C++.

  Hi, What i need to do is as follows: I have a bigloo scheme program (*.scm), then using the bigloo frameworks jvm a class file is generated. I want to use this .class file from a .java file. That is, i need to import this(.class) file as i want to use some functions defined in the scheme file which is now a .class file. How do i do it in Eclipse? i have created two packages one for java and one for the .class file. Then i import the package containing the .class file. But i am not able to use the function in the .class file in the .java file. Are there any settings to be done? Please let me know how this can be done.

Then it gives the following instructions to execute: $ git clone git://github.com/ruhoh/blog.git USERNAME.ruhoh.com $ cd USERNAME.ruhoh.com $ git remote set-url origin [email protected]:USERNAME/USERNAME.ruhoh.com.git $ git push origin master I am able to execute the first three lines and then on the fourth I am asked to enter my passphrase for /home/nredyssuts/.ssh/id_rsa I do that correctly and then bam! ERROR: Repository not found. fatal: the remote end hung up unexpectedly I'm not sure why this is happening at all. This is a public repository.

Scenario: I have a REST API and when i call it, it returns back response in JSON format.   Pretty basic question.. I kno.., I just don't know how its done. I see it everywhere. I want to be able to sort out my content in my websites by most viewed, most commented, most popular, best rating, etc...with a drop down list, check box, etc... but I don't know how "sort by" works? Which scripting language should it be written in? Javascript? PHP? Can it be done with XML? Do I have to have a database set up like MySQL? Is there a good tutorial anywhere that explains it? I need to be explained the exact process of how it works. As you can see I really need direction.. Your help is much appreciated :D

• DAQ Triggers in Matlab

  I'm writing a program that detects the speed of a object by hall effect sensors that are run into MATLAB through a DAQ (MCC USB-1408FS) The problem that has arisen is that I'm using a non-stop scan technique to detect the state of one of 3 sensors. Unfortunately this means that unless the object is rotating past each sensor at the exact rate the program runs, I will see an instantaneous speed (done by comparing the time between two sensors) of zero. I need the sensors to signal the program to count when they are hit, instead of constantly scanning for the signal. How can this be done?

  Hello. I am new to Android and mobile phones development. I want to develop an application that needs to have a total control over the "phone" of the smartphone, i.e. controlling all the communication of the GSM chip with the cellular system, accessing the SIM card identity that it sends (encrypted) to the cellular system, disabling the cellular antenna and resuming it back, and more of that kind... Can it be done with Android? Does the software (OS) have control over all of the phone components in a smartphone, or there are some parts that are done in the hardware level only? (I guess that the Android API won't enable me to do everything i want, but even theoretically is it possible if I recompile the OS after making the changes there?) Thanks!

  For debugging purposes, I need to recursively search a directory for all files which start with a UTF-8 byte order mark (BOM). My current solution is a simple shell script: find -type f | while read file do if [ "`head -c 3 -- "$file"`" == $'\xef\xbb\xbf' ] then echo "found BOM in: $file" fi done Or, if you prefer short, unreadable one-liners: find -type f|while read file;do [ "`head -c3 -- "$file"`" == $'\xef\xbb\xbf' ] && echo "found BOM in: $file";done It doesn't work with filenames that contain a line break, but such files are not to be expected anyway. Is there any shorter or more elegant solution? Are there any interesting text editors or macros for text editors?

• Script Doesnt Run All the Way Through

  I have a php script that should execute 2 for loops. Both take awhile to run. I have called ignore_user_abort(true) and set_time_limit(0). The interesting thing is, the first for loop completes, then the script dies without calling the next line of code. ignore_user_abort(true); set_time_limit(0); for($i=0; $i<10500; ++$i) { //do work } mail('[email protected]', 'First loop done', 'None'); for($j=0;$j<12500; ++$j) { //do work } mail('[email protected]', 'Second loop done', 'None'); The first loop will finish after about 20 minutes, but the mail function is never called, the script just ends. Any ideas why this might be happening other than a timeout (I have run other scripts for days on my current configuration)?

• Android: Scrollable (bitmap) screen

  I am currently implementing a view in Android that involves using a larger than the screen size bitmap as a background and then having drawables drawn ontop of this. This is so as to simulate a "map" that can be scrolled horizontally aswell as vertically. Which is done by using a canvas and then drawing to this the full "map" bitmap, then putting the other images on top as an overlay and then drawing only the viewable bit of this to screen. Overriding the touch events to redraw the screen on a scroll/fling. I'm sure this probably has a huge ammount of overhead (by creating a canvas of the full image whilst using(drawing) only a fifth of it) and could be done in a different way as to the explained, but I was just wondering what people would do in this situation, and perhaps examples?   I am using MySQL DB and I have created a PHP script for the following, now i need the idea for the below asked question.... please help... I have a table called audit trail whose structure is: id, trackid, table, operation, newvalue, oldvalue, field, changedone I have created triggers for insert/update/delete for every table of same DB, now whenever there is change in ny DB the triggers get activated and updates the Audit trail table accordingly.. I am tracking these changes so that i can use these changes to be done on production DB which is of same structure as of this test DB. Also when the admin finds that he does not need the changes recently he did for production DB then he can rollback it using the Old Data it stored in Ausittrail table of test db. Now here in audit trail table structure, there will be an insert for every single field change like-wise if a table has 4 fields then the change in that tavle will insert 4 rows in audit trail.. Coming to the question now, How can i find the latest change done from the Audit table so that I can insert these changes in Production DB.
