As we all know that, multi-threading is used for Increasing the User responsiveness and achieved by sepating UI thread and calculation thread. But lets talk about only console application. Will multi-threading increases the speed of the calculation. Do we get culculation result faster when we calculate through multi-threading. what about on multi cores, will multi threading increse the speed or not. Please help me. An email with an activation link has been sent blablabla (Account now exists but is marked not enabled) User opens email, clicks link (Account is enabled) Thank you! You can now use the site What I'm trying to do is log in the user after he has clicked the email link so he can start using the website right away. I can't use his password since it's encrypted in the DB, is the only option writing a custom authentication backend?

• Threaded Django task doesn't automatically handle transactions or db connections?

  I've got Django set up to run some recurring tasks in their own threads, and I noticed that they were always leaving behind unfinished database connection processes (pgsql "Idle In Transaction"). I looked through the Postgres logs and found that the transactions weren't being completed (no ROLLBACK). I tried using the various transaction decorators on my functions, no luck. I switched to manual transaction management and did the rollback manually, that worked, but still left the processes as "Idle". So then I called connection.close(), and all is well. But I'm left wondering, why doesn't Django's typical transaction and connection management work for these threaded tasks that are being spawned from the main Django thread?

Trying to debug some issues with connections to the DB. If there is any other alternative that I can use please suggest that as well.

  I'm using zend framework. currently everytime I need to use the db I go ahead and connect to the DB: function connect(){ $connParams = array("host" => $host, "port" => $port, "username" => $username, "password" => $password, "dbname" => $dbname); $db = new Zend_Db_Adapter_Pdo_Mysql($connParams); return $db } so I would just call the connect() function everytime I need to use the db My question is...suppose I want to reuse $db everywhere in my site and only connect once in the very initial stage of the site load and then close the connection right before the site gets sent to the user, what would be the best practice to accomplish this? Which file in Zend should I save $db in, what method should I use to save it (global variable?), and which file should I do the connection closing in?

  I have to develop a new (desktop) app for a small business. This business currently has an Access database with millions of records. The file size is about 1.5 GB. The boss told me that searching on this DB is very slow. The DB consists of a single table with about 20 fields. I also think the overall DB design isn't great. I thought to use another DB server with a new design to improve both performance and efficiency. Considering this is a relatively small business, I don't want to spend much for a DB license, so I want to ask you what would you do. Continue to use Access, maybe improving and optimizing the DB in some way Buy a DB server license (in this case, which one?) ? (any idea?)

• MD5 vertex skinning problem extending to multi-jointed skeleton (GPU Skinning)

  Currently I'm trying to implement GPU skinning in my project. So far I have achieved single joint translation and rotation, and multi-jointed translation. The problem arises when I try to rotate a multi-jointed skeleton. The image above shows the current progress. The left image shows how the model should deform. The middle image shows how it deforms in my project. The right shows a better deform (still not right) inverting a certain value, which I will explain below. The way I get my animation data is by exporting it to the MD5 format (MD5mesh for mesh data and MD5anim for animation data). When I come to parse the animation data, for each frame, I check if the bone has a parent, if not, the data is passed in as is from the MD5anim file. If it does have a parent, I transform the bones position by the parents orientation, and the add this with the parents translation. Then the parent and child orientations get concatenated. The invBindPose matrices are simply the inverted matrices created from the joints in the MD5mesh file. Update 1 I looked at GLM to compare the values I get with my own implementation. They turn out to be exactly the same. So now i'm checking if there's a problem with matrix creation... Update 2 Looked at GLM again to compare matrix creation using quaternions. Turns out that's not the problem either.

• Multi-lingual error messages and error numbers

  So we're looking at the possibility of porting our software to support multiple languages and one of the areas we're going to have to deal with is error messages and other notifications. These obviously have to be reported to the users in their own language. Our team (largely) only speak English and even if we were all multi-lingual we're looking at selling to a wide range of countries and could never expect to have a reasonable number of people speaking all languages (we're a small company). The obvious way to get round the language issue when errors or other messages we may get asked about which are being reported is error numbers which would be consistent across language. While these are going to exist in the backend (if only as key on the error message), I'd really rather not throw them at users if we don't have to but I don't have any other solution. Anyone have any useful suggestions for alternatives?

• Multi-platform Map Application

  I'm working on a web project (PHP, jQuery) which currently using Google Maps powering up the map functionality of the application, however we need to make it multi-platform like you can go to the dashboard and choose one from 5-10 map providers (which Goolge Maps is just one of them) to underlying your map functionality. So, as the application is supposed to show the data on map, almost in every single place we have to deal with the API provided by that specific map provider. Currently we are thinking about revising our modular structure and/or making something like an adapter for each provider to deal with their native syntax but via our standard methods. I wish to have your ideas and your experiences, specially if you ever made an interface for dealing via 2-3 different map providers. That would helps much and I really appreciate that. If you need any further information, just ask me to update the question. Update: As Vicky Chijwani suggested Mapstraction, now I'm also wondering which one is more better (pros & cons), having an adapter implemented on Javascript or PHP?

• What's the best way to run Drupal and Django sites behind the same Varnish server?

  I have a high traffic website running with Drupal and Apache, five web servers behind a Varnish server load balancing. Let's say this site is example.com. I'm using five backends and a director like this in my default.vcl: director balancer round-robin { { .backend = web1; } { .backend = web2; } { .backend = web3; } { .backend = web4; } { .backend = web5; } } Now I'm working on a new Django project that will be a new section of this site running on example.com/new-section. After checking the documentation I found I can do something like this: sub vcl_recv { if (req.url ~ "^/new-section/") { set req.backend = newbackend; } else { set req.backend = default; } } That is, using a different backend for a subdirectory /new-section under the same domain. My question is, how do I make something like this work with my director and load balancing setup? I'm probably going to run two or more web servers (backends) with my new Django project, each one with a mix of Gunicorn, Nginx, and a few Python packages, and would like to put all of those in their own Varnish director to load balance. • Repairing or recreating a bootloader on a multi-booting EFI GPT system

  Reinstalling Ubuntu messed up my boot loader so I I tried to fix it with boot repair. It detected my OSX installation and asked about removing the "separate boot/EFI". It also said my partition was full despite the fact that it wasn't and asked me to remove stuff. I declined both and proceeded. It's been stuck at the "purge and reinstall the GRUB" stage for half an hour. Is this typical, bearing in mind I have a fast SSD and CPU? Is there a better way to re-install grub on a multi-booting UEFI system? Does my pastebin provide any insight?

  For some reason, I can't get my multi-channel funnel which utilizes RegEx's in the path steps to function -- it keeps coming back with no data. There are a few variables which may be holding things up, but I can't figure out the origin of the problem, nor a solution. Here's the situation: The funnel is tracking conversions, defined as when a user completes 4 steps to signup Steps are not "required" Default URL is set to https://example.com There is a 302 redirect set up on our site that leads from http://example.com to https://example.com Within the funnel, steps switch from non-secure pages (unless browser is set to secure browsing), to secure pages once the user moves from the landing page to the second page of the sign-up process (account placeholder has been created) URL at that point contains the variable of publisher number within (but not at the end) the URL My RegEx's are all properly written as tested on rubular.com

• How to prevent a 404 Error when installing a subdomain using a wordpress multi-site installation

  I have installed a multi-site instillation of WordPress onto my domain. I then added the necessary code to the wp-config.php file and .htaccess as instructed by WordPress. I also installed a plugin called Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin which allowed me to place a 301 redirect onto the main domain as I only want to use the sub domain and not the main domain. Then I also added the following line of code to the wp-config.php file to redirect the main domain define( 'NOBLOGREDIRECT', 'URL Redirect Address' ); The site works fine with a redirect on the main domain and my subdomain runs fine when you type in subdomain.domain.com or http://subdomain.domain.com. However when I enter www.subdomain.domain.com or http://www.subdomain.domain.com the following error message is returned: Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Apache/2.4.9 (Unix) Server at www.subdomain.domain.com Port 80 Any help with this would be much appreciated.

• Usefulness of blogs for multi language ecommerce site

  I have a multi-language ecommerce site for which I am trying to improve its online marketing. There's currently a blog for the english shop, on a subdomain, which doesn't really get very much traffic. I'd been recommended to set up blogs for each of the different language shops and try to generate traffic to each of the blogs. I'm wondering if this is really worth the effort and cost (blog devt costs and ongoing translations required). Does anyone have any experience/advice on this at all? Perhaps where they've used this approach successfully or otherwise?

• Multi Monitor Setup Problems

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx. I have until recently been using a nVida Graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT) with two monitors attached, this all worked fine and dandy. A couple of days ago I bought two new identical LCD monitors for a multi monitor setup and two ATI graphics cards (ATI Sapphire Radeon HD5450). NOTE *All monitors work fine in Windows XP, 2k, Vista and 7 After I had booted into Ubuntu only one display came on, that I kind of expected anyway, then I removed the driver for the nVidia card and downloaded the ATI version which gave me the ATI Catalyst Control Center - in that only two of the displays were showing the third was disabled and showing unknown driver. I enabled the third monitor that stated "Unkown Driver" and had to reboot, upon reboot none of the displays work. I restarted and booted up into recovery mode and from now that is only what I can get into using a failsafe driver. It seems according to the log that a server is already active for Display 0 and I have to remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. This is what the log file is saying: Fatal Server Error Server is already active for display 0 if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. (WW) xf86 closeconsole: KDSETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86 closeconsole: VT_GETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86 closeconsole: VT_GETSTATE failed: Bad file descriptor ddxSigGiveUp: closing log I have tried looking at my xorg.config file but unfortunately I have not really got a clue as to how it "should" be - I have tried regenerating it using this command from a terminal: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg but that had no effect so I am currently stuck in failsafe driver mode but two monitors are active but are mirroring each other. I hope that this is not to long - looking back I have been going on a bit! but I am just trying to explain as much as I can... This is so much harder than I thought it would be, I don't think Ubuntu likes ATI for multi (3) monitors or maybe the other way around. Can anyone help still?

• Go for Zend framework or Django for a modular web application?

  I am using both Zend framework and Django, and they both have they strengths and weakness, but they are both good framworks in their own way. I do want to create a highly modular web application, like this example: modules: Admin cms articles sections ... ... ... I also want all modules to be self contained with all confid and template files. I have been looking into a way to solve this is zend the last days, but adding one omer level to the module setup doesn't feel right. I am sure this could be done, but should I? I have also included Doctrine to my zend application that could give me even more problems in my module setup! When we are talking about Django this is easy to implement (Easy as in concept, not in implementation time or whatever) and a great way to create web apps. But one of the downsides of Django is the web hosing part. There are some web hosts offering Django support, but not that many.. So then I guess the question is what have the most value; rapid modular development versus hosting options! Well, comments are welcome! Thanks

• Django: How can I identify the calling view from a template?

  Short version: Is there a simple, built-in way to identify the calling view in a Django template, without passing extra context variables? Long (original) version: One of my Django apps has several different views, each with its own named URL pattern, that all render the same template. There's a very small amount of template code that needs to change depending on the called view, too small to be worth the overhead of setting up separate templates for each view, so ideally I need to find a way to identify the calling view in the template. I've tried setting up the views to pass in extra context variables (e.g. "view_name") to identify the calling view, and I've also tried using {% ifequal request.path "/some/path/" %} comparisons, but neither of these solutions seems particularly elegant. Is there a better way to identify the calling view from the template? Is there a way to access to the view's name, or the name of the URL pattern? Update 1: Regarding the comment that this is simply a case of me misunderstanding MVC, I understand MVC, but Django's not really an MVC framework. I believe the way my app is set up is consistent with Django's take on MVC: the views describe which data is presented, and the templates describe how the data is presented. It just happens that I have a number of views that prepare different data, but that all use the same template because the data is presented the same way for all the views. I'm just looking for a simple way to identify the calling view from the template, if this exists. Update 2: Thanks for all the answers. I think the question is being overthought -- as mentioned in my original question, I've already considered and tried all of the suggested solutions -- so I've distilled it down to a "short version" now at the top of the question. • What's the next steps for moving from appengine to full django?

  Hey guys, I'm super new to programming and I've been using appengine to help me learn python and general coding. I'm getting better quickly and I'm loving it all the way :) Appengine was awesome for allowing me to just dive into writing my app and getting something live that works (see http://www.7bks.com/). But I'm realising that the longer I continue to learn on appengine the more I'm constraining myself and locking myself into a single system. I'd like to move to developing on full django (since django looks super cool!). What are my next steps? To give you a feel for my level of knowledge: I'm not a unix user I'm not familiar with command line controls (I still use appengine/python completely via the appengine SDK) I've never programmed in anything other than python, anywhere other than appengine I know the word SQL, but don't know what MySQL is really or how to use it. So, specifically: What are the skills I need to learn to get up and running with full django/python? If I'm going to host somewhere else I suppose I'll need to learn some sysadmin type skills (maybe even unix?). Is there anywhere that offers easy hosting (like appengine) but that supports django? I hear such great things about heroku I'm considering switching to RoR and going there I appreciate that I'm likely not quite ready to move away from appengine just yet but I'm a fiercely passionate learner (http://www.7bks.com/blog/179001) and would love it if I knew all the steps I needed to learn so I could set about learning them. At the moment, I don't even know what the steps are I need to learn! Thank you very much.
