  • Prime Numbers Code Help

    - by andrew
Hello Everybody, I am suppose to "write a Java program that reads a positive integer n from standard input, then prints out the first n prime number." It's divided into 3 parts. 1st: This function will return true or false according to whether m is prime or composite. The array argument P will contain a sufficient number of primes to do the testing. Specifically, at the time isPrime() is called, array P must contain (at least) all primes p in the range 2 p m . For instance, to test m = 53 for primality, one must do successive trial divisions by 2, 3, 5, and 7. We go no further since 11 53 . Thus a precondition for the function call isPrime(53, P) is that P[0] = 2 , P[1] = 3 , P[2] = 5, and P[3] = 7 . The return value in this case would be true since all these divisions fail. Similarly to test m =143 , one must do trial divisions by 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 (since 13 143 ). The precondition for the function call isPrime(143, P) is therefore P[0] = 2 , P[1] = 3 , P[2] = 5, P[3] = 7 , and P[4] =11. The return value in this case would be false since 11 divides 143. Function isPrime() should contain a loop that steps through array P, doing trial divisions. This loop should terminate when 2 either a trial division succeeds, in which case false is returned, or until the next prime in P is greater than m , in which case true is returned. Then there is the "main function" • Check that the user supplied exactly one command line argument which can be interpreted as a positive integer n. If the command line argument is not a single positive integer, your program will print a usage message as specified in the examples below, then exit. • Allocate array Primes[] of length n and initialize Primes[0] = 2 . • Enter a loop which will discover subsequent primes and store them as Primes[1] , Primes[2], Primes[3] , ……, Primes[n -1] . This loop should contain an inner loop which walks through successive integers and tests them for primality by calling function isPrime() with appropriate arguments. • Print the contents of array Primes[] to stdout, 10 to a line separated by single spaces. In other words Primes[0] through Primes[9] will go on line 1, Primes[10] though Primes[19] will go on line 2, and so on. Note that if n is not a multiple of 10, then the last line of output will contain fewer than 10 primes. The last function is called "usage" which I am not sure how to execute this! Your program will include a function called Usage() having signature static void Usage() that prints this message to stderr, then exits. Thus your program will contain three functions in all: main(), isPrime(), and Usage(). Each should be preceded by a comment block giving it’s name, a short description of it’s operation, and any necessary preconditions (such as those for isPrime().) And hear is my code, but I am having a bit of a problem and could you guys help me fix it? If I enter the number "5" it gives me the prime numbers which are "6,7,8,9" which doesn't make much sense. import java.util.; import java.io.; import java.lang.*; public class PrimeNumber { static boolean isPrime(int m, int[] P){ int squarert = Math.round( (float)Math.sqrt(m) ); int i = 2; boolean ans=false; while ((i<=squarert) & (ans==false)) { int c= P[i]; if (m%c==0) ans= true; else ans= false; i++; } /* if(ans ==true) ans=false; else ans=true; return ans; } ///****main public static void main(String[] args ) { Scanner in= new Scanner(System.in); int input= in.nextInt(); int i, j; int squarert; boolean ans = false; int userNum; int remander = 0; System.out.println("input: " + input); int[] prime = new int[input]; prime[0]= 2; for(i=1; i ans = isPrime(j,prime); j++;} prime[i] = j; } //prnt prime System.out.println("The first " + input + " prime number(s) are: "); for(int r=0; r }//end of main } Thanks for the help

  • Is this fix to "PostSharp complains about CA1800:DoNotCastUnnecessarily" the best one?

    - by cad
This question is about "is" and "as" in casting and about CA1800 PostSharp rule. I want to know if the solution I thought is the best one possible or if it have any problem that I can't see. I have this code (named OriginaL Code and reduced to the minimum relevant). The function ValidateSubscriptionLicenceProducts try to validate a SubscriptionLicence (that could be of 3 types: Standard,Credit and TimeLimited ) by casting it and checking later some stuff (in //Do Whatever). PostSharp complains about CA1800:DoNotCastUnnecessarily. The reason is that I am casting two times the same object to the same type. This code in best case will cast 2 times (if it is a StandardLicence) and in worst case 4 times (If it is a TimeLimited Licence). I know is possible to invalidate rule (it was my first approach), as there is no big impact in performance here, but I am trying a best approach. //Version Original Code //Min 2 casts, max 4 casts //PostSharp Complains about CA1800:DoNotCastUnnecessarily private void ValidateSubscriptionLicenceProducts(SubscriptionLicence licence) { if (licence is StandardSubscriptionLicence) { // All products must have the same products purchased List<StandardSubscriptionLicenceProduct> standardProducts = ((StandardSubscriptionLicence)licence).SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else if (licence is CreditSubscriptionLicence) { // All products must have a valid Credit entitlement & Credit interval List<CreditSubscriptionLicenceProduct> creditProducts = ((CreditSubscriptionLicence)licence).SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else if (licence is TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence) { // All products must have a valid Time entitlement // All products must have a valid Credit entitlement & Credit interval List<TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicenceProduct> creditProducts = ((TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence)licence).SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else throw new InvalidSubscriptionLicenceException("Invalid Licence type"); //More code... } This is Improved1 version using "as". Do not complain about CA1800 but the problem is that it will cast always 3 times (if in the future we have 30 or 40 types of licences it could perform bad) //Version Improve 1 //Minimum 3 casts, maximum 3 casts private void ValidateSubscriptionLicenceProducts(SubscriptionLicence licence) { StandardSubscriptionLicence standardLicence = Slicence as StandardSubscriptionLicence; CreditSubscriptionLicence creditLicence = Clicence as CreditSubscriptionLicence; TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence timeLicence = Tlicence as TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence; if (Slicence == null) { // All products must have the same products purchased List<StandardSubscriptionLicenceProduct> standardProducts = Slicence.SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else if (Clicence == null) { // All products must have a valid Credit entitlement & Credit interval List<CreditSubscriptionLicenceProduct> creditProducts = Clicence.SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else if (Tlicence == null) { // All products must have a valid Time entitlement // All products must have a valid Credit entitlement & Credit interval List<TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicenceProduct> creditProducts = Tlicence.SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else throw new InvalidSubscriptionLicenceException("Invalid Licence type"); //More code... } But later I thought in a best one. This is the final version I am using. //Version Improve 2 // Min 1 cast, Max 3 Casts // Do not complain about CA1800:DoNotCastUnnecessarily private void ValidateSubscriptionLicenceProducts(SubscriptionLicence licence) { StandardSubscriptionLicence standardLicence = null; CreditSubscriptionLicence creditLicence = null; TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence timeLicence = null; if (StandardSubscriptionLicence.TryParse(licence, out standardLicence)) { // All products must have the same products purchased List<StandardSubscriptionLicenceProduct> standardProducts = standardLicence.SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else if (CreditSubscriptionLicence.TryParse(licence, out creditLicence)) { // All products must have a valid Credit entitlement & Credit interval List<CreditSubscriptionLicenceProduct> creditProducts = creditLicence.SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else if (TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence.TryParse(licence, out timeLicence)) { // All products must have a valid Time entitlement List<TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicenceProduct> timeProducts = timeLicence.SubscribedProducts; //Do whatever } else throw new InvalidSubscriptionLicenceException("Invalid Licence type"); //More code... } //Example of TryParse in CreditSubscriptionLicence public static bool TryParse(SubscriptionLicence baseLicence, out CreditSubscriptionLicence creditLicence) { creditLicence = baseLicence as CreditSubscriptionLicence; if (creditLicence != null) return true; else return false; } It requires a change in the classes StandardSubscriptionLicence, CreditSubscriptionLicence and TimeLimitedSubscriptionLicence to have a "tryparse" method (copied below in the code). This version I think it will cast as minimum only once and as maximum three. What do you think about improve 2? Is there a best way of doing it?

  • Session caching problem

    - by Levani
    I have a strange problem with php sessions. I use them for authorization on my site. I store two variables - currently logged in user's id and username in session. When I log in with one username, than log out and log in again with another username the previous user's id is returned using the session variable instead of the current user. The most strange thing is that this happens only when it comes to insert some data into database. When I directly echo this variable the correct id is displayed, but when I insert new record into database this variable sends incorrect id. Here is the php code I use for sending data into database: <?php session_start(); //connect database require_once 'dbc.php'; $authorID = $_SESSION['user_id']; if ( $authorID != 0 ) { $content = htmlentities($_POST["answ_content"],ENT_COMPAT,'UTF-8'); $dro = date('Y-m-d H:i:s'); $qID = $_POST["question_ID"]; $author = 'avtori'; $sql="INSERT INTO comments (comment_ID, comment_post_ID, comment_author, comment_date, comment_content, user_id) VALUES (NULL, '$qID', '$author', '$dro', '$content', '$authorID')"; $result = mysql_query($sql); } else { echo 'error'; } ?> Can anyone please help? Here is the logout function: function logout() { global $db; session_start(); if(isset($_SESSION['user_id']) || isset($_COOKIE['user_id'])) { mysql_query("update `users` set `ckey`= '', `ctime`= '' where `id`='$_SESSION[user_id]' OR `id` = '$_COOKIE[user_id]'") or die(mysql_error()); } /************ Delete the sessions****************/ unset($_SESSION['user_id']); unset($_SESSION['user_name']); unset($_SESSION['user_level']); unset($_SESSION['HTTP_USER_AGENT']); session_unset(); session_destroy(); /* Delete the cookies*******************/ setcookie("user_id", '', time()-60*60*24*COOKIE_TIME_OUT, "/"); setcookie("user_name", '', time()-60*60*24*COOKIE_TIME_OUT, "/"); setcookie("user_key", '', time()-60*60*24*COOKIE_TIME_OUT, "/"); header("Location: index.php"); } Here is the authentication script: include 'dbc.php'; $err = array(); foreach($_GET as $key => $value) { $get[$key] = filter($value); //get variables are filtered. } if ($_POST['doLogin']=='Login') { foreach($_POST as $key => $value) { $data[$key] = filter($value); // post variables are filtered } $user_email = $data['usr_email']; $pass = $data['pwd']; if (strpos($user_email,'@') === false) { $user_cond = "user_name='$user_email'"; } else { $user_cond = "user_email='$user_email'"; } $result = mysql_query("SELECT `id`,`pwd`,`full_name`,`approved`,`user_level` FROM users WHERE $user_cond AND `banned` = '0' ") or die (mysql_error()); $num = mysql_num_rows($result); // Match row found with more than 1 results - the user is authenticated. if ( $num > 0 ) { list($id,$pwd,$full_name,$approved,$user_level) = mysql_fetch_row($result); if(!$approved) { //$msg = urlencode("Account not activated.   • How to determine whether a class has a particular templated member function?

    - by Aozine
I was wondering if it's possible to extend the SFINAE approach to detecting whether a class has a certain member function (as discussed here: "Is there a Technique in C++ to know if a class has a member function of a given signature?" http://stackoverflow.com/questions/87372/is-there-a-technique-in-c-to-know-if-a-class-has-a-member-function-of-a-given-s ) to support templated member functions? E.g. to be able to detect the function foo in the following class: struct some_class { template < int _n > void foo() { } }; I thought it might be possible to do this for a particular instantiation of foo, (e.g. check to see if void foo< 5 >() is a member) as follows: template < typename _class, int _n > class foo_int_checker { template < typename _t, void (_t::*)() > struct sfinae { }; template < typename _t > static big test( sfinae< _t, &_t::foo< _n > > * ); template < typename _t > static small test( ... ); public: enum { value = sizeof( test< _class >( 0 ) ) == sizeof( big ) }; }; Then do foo_int_checker< some_class, 5 >::value to check whether some_class has the member void foo< 5 >(). However on MSVC++ 2008 this always returns false while g++ gives the following syntax errors at the line test( sfinae< _t, &_t::foo< _n > > ); test.cpp:24: error: missing `>' to terminate the template argument list test.cpp:24: error: template argument 2 is invalid test.cpp:24: error: expected unqualified-id before '<' token test.cpp:24: error: expected `,' or `...' before '<' token test.cpp:24: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of `parameter' with no type Both seem to fail because I'm trying to get the address of a template function instantiation from a type that is itself a template parameter. Does anyone know whether this is possible or if it's disallowed by the standard for some reason? EDIT: It seems that I missed out the ::template syntax to get g++ to compile the above code correctly. If I change the bit where I get the address of the function to &_t::template foo< _n > then the program compiles, but I get the same behaviour as MSVC++ (value is always set to false). If I comment out the ... overload of test to force the compiler to pick the other one, I get the following compiler error in g++: test.cpp: In instantiation of `foo_int_checker<A, 5>': test.cpp:40: instantiated from here test.cpp:32: error: invalid use of undefined type `class foo_int_checker<A, 5>' test.cpp:17: error: declaration of `class foo_int_checker<A, 5>' test.cpp:32: error: enumerator value for `value' not integer constant where line 32 is the enum { value = sizeof( test< _class >( 0 ) ) == sizeof( big ) }; line. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to help me diagnose the problem :(. MSVC++ gives a similar nondescript error: error C2770: invalid explicit template argument(s) for 'clarity::meta::big checker<_checked_type>::test(checker<_checked_type>::sfinae<_t,&_t::template foo<5>> *)' on the same line. What's strange is that if I get the address from a specific class and not a template parameter (i.e. rather than &_t::template foo< _n > I do &some_class::template foo< _n >) then I get the correct result, but then my checker class is limited to checking a single class (some_class) for the function. Also, if I do the following: template < typename _t, void (_t::*_f)() > void f0() { } template < typename _t > void f1() { f0< _t, &_t::template foo< 5 > >(); } and call f1< some_class >() then I DON'T get a compile error on &_t::template foo< 5 >. This suggests that the problem only arises when getting the address of a templated member function from a type that is itself a template parameter while in a SFINAE context. Argh!

  • Why can't my main class see the array in my calender class

    - by Rocky Celltick Eadie
    This is a homework problem. I'm already 5 days late and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.. this is my 1st semester in Java and my first post on this site Here is the assignment.. Create a class called Calendar. The class should contain a variable called events that is a String array. The array should be created to hold 5 elements. Use a constant value to specify the array size. Do not hard code the array size. Initialize the array in the class constructor so that each element contains the string “ – No event planned – “. The class should contain a method called CreateEvent. This method should accept a String argument that contains a one-word user event and an integer argument that represents the day of the week. Monday should be represented by the number 1 and Friday should be represented by the number 5. Populate the events array with the event info passed into the method. Although the user will input one-word events, each event string should prepend the following string to each event: event_dayAppoinment: (where event_day is the day of the week) For example, if the user enters 1 and “doctor” , the first array element should read: Monday Appointment: doctor If the user enters 2 and “PTA” , the second array element should read: Tuesday Appointment: PTA Write a driver program (in a separate class) that creates and calls your Calendar class. Then use a loop to gather user input. Ask for the day (as an integer) and then ask for the event (as a one word string). Pass the integer and string to the Calendar object’s CreateEvent method. The user should be able enter 0 – 5 events. If the user enters -1, the loop should exit and your application should print out all the events in a tabular format. Your program should not allow the user to enter invalid values for the day of the week. Any input other than 1 – 5 or -1 for the day of the week would be considered invalid. Notes: When obtaining an integer from the user, you will need to use the nextInt() method on your Scanner object. When obtaining a string from a user, you will need to use the next() method on your Scanner object. Here is my code so far.. //DRIVER CLASS /** * * @author Rocky */ //imports scanner import java.util.Scanner; //begin class driver public class driver { /** * @paramargs the command line arguments */ //begin main method public static void main(String[] args) { //initiates scanner Scanner userInput = new Scanner (System.in); //declare variables int dayOfWeek; String userEvent; //creates object for calender class calendercalenderObject = new calender(); //user prompt System.out.println("Enter day of week for your event in the following format:"); System.out.println("Enter 1 for Monday"); System.out.println("Enter 2 for Tuesday"); System.out.println("Enter 3 for Wednsday"); System.out.println("Enter 4 for Thursday"); System.out.println("Enter 5 for Friday"); System.out.println("Enter -1 to quit"); //collect user input dayOfWeek = userInput.nextInt(); //user prompt System.out.println("Please type in the name of your event"); //collect user input userEvent = userInput.next(); //begin while loop while (dayOfWeek != -1) { //test for valid day of week if ((dayOfWeek>=1) && (dayOfWeek<=5)){ //calls createEvent method in calender class and passes 2 variables calenderObject.createEvent(userEvent,dayOfWeek); } else { //error message System.out.println("You have entered an invalid number"); //user prompts System.out.println("Press -1 to quit or enter another day"); System.out.println("Enter 1 for Monday"); System.out.println("Enter 2 for Tuesday"); System.out.println("Enter 3 for Wednsday"); System.out.println("Enter 4 for Thursday"); System.out.println("Enter 5 for Friday"); System.out.println("Enter -1 to quit"); //collect user input dayOfWeek = userInput.nextInt(); //end data validity test } //end while loop } //prints array to screen int i=0; for (i=0;i<events.length;i++){ System.out.println(events[i]); } //end main method } } /** * * @author Rocky */ //imports scanner import java.util.Scanner; //begin calender class public class calender { //creates events array String[] events = new String[5]; //begin calender class constructor public calender() { //Initializes array String[] events = {"-No event planned-","-No event planned-","-No event planned-","-No event planned-","-No event planned-"}; //end calender class constructor } //begin createEvent method public String[] createEvent (String userEvent, int dayOfWeek){ //Start switch test switch (dayOfWeek){ case 1: events[0] = ("Monday Appoinment:") + userEvent; break; case 2: events[1] = ("Tuesday Appoinment:") + userEvent; break; case 3: events[2] = ("WednsdayAppoinment:") + userEvent; break; case 4: events[3] = ("Thursday Appoinment:") + userEvent; break; case 5: events[4] = ("Friday Appoinment:") + userEvent; break; default: break; //End switch test } //returns events array return events; //end create event method } //end calender class }

  • MySQL 5.5 - Lost connection to MySQL server during query

    - by bully
I have an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server running at a german hoster (virtualized system). # uname -a Linux ... 3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 6 14:25:57 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I want to migrate a Web CMS system, called Contao. It's not my first migration, but my first migration having connection issues with mysql. Migration went successfully, I have the same Contao version running (it's more or less just copy / paste). For the database behind, I did: apt-get install mysql-server phpmyadmin I set a root password and added a user for the CMS which has enough rights on its own database (and only its database) for doing the stuff it has to do. Data import via phpmyadmin worked just fine. I can access the backend of the CMS (which needs to deal with the database already). If I try to access the frontend now, I get the following error: Fatal error: Uncaught exception Exception with message Query error: Lost connection to MySQL server during query (<query statement here, nothing special, just a select>) thrown in /var/www/system/libraries/Database.php on line 686 (Keep in mind: I can access mysql with phpmyadmin and through the backend, working like a charme, it's just the frontend call causing errors). If I spam F5 in my browser I can sometimes even kill the mysql deamon. If I run # mysqld --log-warnings=2 I get this: ... 120921 7:57:31 [Note] mysqld: ready for connections. Version: '5.5.24-0ubuntu0.12.04.1' socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' port: 3306 (Ubuntu) 05:57:37 UTC - mysqld got signal 4 ; This could be because you hit a bug. There are some old (from 2008) Gentoo bugs, where re-compiling just solved the problem. I already re-installed mysql via: sudo apt-get remove mysql-server mysql-common sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get install mysql-server without any results. This is the first time I'm running into this problem, and I'm not very experienced with this kind of mysql 'administration'. So mainly, I want to know if anyone of you could help me out please :) Is it a mysql bug? Is something broken in the Ubuntu repositories? Is this one of those misterious 'use-tcp-connection-instead-of-socket-stuff-because-there-are-problems-on-virtualized-machines-with-sockets'-problem? Or am I completly on the wrong way and I just miss-configured something? Remember, phpmyadmin and access to the backend (which uses the database, too) is just fine. Maybe something with Apache? What can I do? Any help is appreciated, so thanks in advance :)

  • Form, function and complexity in rule processing

Tim Bass posted on Orwellian Event Processing.I was involved in a heated exchange in the comments, and he has more recently published a post entitled Disadvantages of Rule-Based Systems (Part 1).Whatever the rights and wrongs of our exchange, it clearly failed to generate any agreement or understanding of our different positions.I don't particularly want to promote further argument of that kind, but I do want to take the opportunity of offering a different perspective on rule-processing and an explanation...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • NTFS Corruption: Files created in Linux corrupted when Windows Boots

    - by Logan Mayfield
I'm getting some file loss and corruption on my Win7/Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot setup. I have a large shared NTFS partition. I have my Windows Docs/Music/etc. directories on that file and have the comparable directors in Linux setup as a sym. link. I'm using ntfs-3g on the linux side of things to manage the ntfs partition. The shared partition is on a logical partition along with my Linux /home / and /swap partitions. The ntfs partition is mounted at boot time via fstab with the following options: ntfs-3g users,nls=utf8,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec,rw The problem seems to be confined to newly created and recently edited files. I have not see data loss or corruption when creating/editing files in Windows and then moving over to Ubuntu. I've been using the sync command aggressively in Ubuntu to try to ensure everything is getting written to the HDD. I do not use hibernate in Windows so I know it's not the usual missing files due to Hibernation problem. I'm not seeing any mount related issues on dmesg. Most recently I had a set of files related to a LaTeX document go bad. Some of them show up in Ubuntu but I am unable to delete them. In the GUI file browser they are given thumbnails associated with files I created on my last boot of Windows. To be more specific: I created a few png files in Windows. The files corrupted by that Windows boot are associated with running PdfLatex on a file and are not image files. However, two of the corrupted files show up with the thumbnail image of one of the previously mentioned png files. The png files are not in the same directory as the latex files but they are both win the Document Folder tree. I've had sucess with using NTFS for shared data in the past and am hoping there's some quirk here I'm missing and it's not just bad luck. On one hand this appears to be some kind of Windows problem as data loss occurs when I boot to Windows after having worked in Ubuntu for a while. However, I'm assuming it's more on the Ubuntu end as it requires the special NTFS drivers. Edit for more info: This is a Lenovo Thinkpad L430. Purchased new in the last month. So it's a fairly fresh install. Many of the files on the shared partition were copied over from a previous NTFS formatted shared partition on another HDD. As requested: here's a sample chkdsk log. Some of the files its mentioning were files that got deleted off the partition while in Ubuntu. Others were created/edited but not deleted. Checking file system on D: Volume dismounted. • Comments on Comments

    - by Joe Mayo
I almost tweeted a reply to Capar Kleijne's question about comments on Twitter, but realized that my opinion exceeded 140 characters. The following is based upon my experience with extremes and approaches that I find useful in code comments. There are a couple extremes that I've seen and reasons why people go the distance in each approach. The most common extreme is no comments in the code at all.  A few bad reasons why this happens is because a developer is in a hurry, sloppy, or is interested in job preservation. The unfortunate result is that the code is difficult to understand and hard to maintain. The drawbacks to no comments in code are a primary reason why teachers drill the need for commenting code into our heads.  This viewpoint assumes the lack of comments are bad because the code is bad, but there is another reason for not commenting that is gaining more popularity. I've heard/and read that code should be self documenting. Following this thought pattern, if code is well written with meaningful names, there should not be a reason for comments.  An addendum to this argument is that comments are often neglected and get out-of-date, but the code is what is kept up-to-date. Presumably, if code contained very good naming, it would be easy to maintain.  This is a noble perspective and I like the practice of meaningful naming of identifiers. However, I think it's also an extreme approach that doesn't cover important cases.  i.e. If an identifier is named badly (subjective differences in opinion) or not changed appropriately during maintenance, then the badly named identifier is no more useful than a stale comment. These were the two no-comment extremes, so let's look at the too many comments extreme. On a regular basis, I'll see cases where the code is over-commented; not nearly as often as the no-comment scenarios, but still prevalent.  These are examples of where every single line in the code is commented.  These comments make the code harder to read because they get in the way of the algorithm.  In most cases, the comments parrot what each line of code does.  If a developer understands the language, then most statements are immediately intuitive.  i.e. what use is it to say that I'm assigning foo to bar when it's clear what the code is doing. I think that over-commenting code is a waste of time that slows down initial development and maintenance.  Understandably, the developer's intentions are admirable because they've had it beaten into their heads that they must comment. However, I think it's an extreme and prefer a more moderate approach. I don't think the extremes do justice to code because each can make maintenance harder.  No comments on bad code is obviously a problem, but the other two extremes are subtle and require qualification to address properly. The problem I see with the code-as-documentation approach is that it doesn't lift the developer out of the algorithm to identify dependencies, intentions, and hacks. Any developer can read code and follow an algorithm, but they still need to know where it fits into the big picture of the application. Because of indirections with language features like interfaces, delegates, and virtual members, code can become complex.  Occasionally, it's useful to point out a nuance or reason why a piece of code is there. i.e. If you've building an app that communicates via HTTP, you'll have certain headers to include for the endpoint, and it could be useful to point out why the code for setting those header values is there and how they affect the application. An argument against this could be that you should extract that code into a separate method with a meaningful name to describe the scenario.  My problem with such an approach would be that your code base becomes even more difficult to navigate and work with because you have all of this extra code just to make the code more meaningful. My opinion is that a simple and well-stated comment stating the reasons and intention for the code is more natural and convenient to the initial developer and maintainer.  I just don't agree with the approach of going out of the way to avoid making a comment.  I'm also concerned that some developers would take this approach as an excuse to not comment their bad code. Another area where I like comments is on documentation comments.  Java has it and so does C# and VB.  It's convenient because we can build automated tools that extract these comments.  These extracted comments are often much better than no documentation at all.  The "go read the code" answer always doesn't fulfill the need for a quick summary of an API. To summarize, I think that the extremes of no comments and too many comments are less than desirable approaches. I prefer documentation comments to explain each class and member (API level) and code comments as necessary to supplement well-written code. Joe

  • SQL SERVER – Advanced Data Quality Services with Melissa Data – Azure Data Market

    - by pinaldave
There has been much fanfare over the new SQL Server 2012, and especially around its new companion product Data Quality Services (DQS). Among the many new features is the addition of this integrated knowledge-driven product that enables data stewards everywhere to profile, match, and cleanse data. In addition to the homegrown rules that data stewards can design and implement, there are also connectors to third party providers that are hosted in the Azure Datamarket marketplace.  In this review, I leverage SQL Server 2012 Data Quality Services, and proceed to subscribe to a third party data cleansing product through the Datamarket to showcase this unique capability. Crucial Questions For the purposes of the review, I used a database I had in an Excel spreadsheet with name and address information. Upon a cursory inspection, there are miscellaneous problems with these records; some addresses are missing ZIP codes, others missing a city, and some records are slightly misspelled or have unparsed suites. With DQS, I can easily add a knowledge base to help standardize my values, such as for state abbreviations. But how do I know that my address is correct? And if my address is not correct, what should it be corrected to? The answer lies in a third party knowledge base by the acknowledged USPS certified address accuracy experts at Melissa Data. Reference Data Services Within DQS there is a handy feature to actually add reference data from many different third-party Reference Data Services (RDS) vendors. DQS simplifies the processes of cleansing, standardizing, and enriching data through custom rules and through service providers from the Azure Datamarket. A quick jump over to the Datamarket site shows me that there are a handful of providers that offer data directly through Data Quality Services. Upon subscribing to these services, one can attach a DQS domain or composite domain (fields in a record) to a reference data service provider, and begin using it to cleanse, standardize, and enrich that data. Besides what I am looking for (address correction and enrichment), it is possible to subscribe to a host of other services including geocoding, IP address reference, phone checking and enrichment, as well as name parsing, standardization, and genderization.  These capabilities extend the data quality that DQS has natively by quite a bit. For my current address correction review, I needed to first sign up to a reference data provider on the Azure Data Market site. For this example, I used Melissa Data’s Address Check Service. They offer free one-month trials, so if you wish to follow along, or need to add address quality to your own data, I encourage you to sign up with them. Once I subscribed to the desired Reference Data Provider, I navigated my browser to the Account Keys within My Account to view the generated account key, which I then inserted into the DQS Client – Configuration under the Administration area. Step by Step to Guide That was all it took to hook in the subscribed provider -Melissa Data- directly to my DQS Client. The next step was for me to attach and map in my Reference Data from the newly acquired reference data provider, to a domain in my knowledge base. On the DQS Client home screen, I selected “New Knowledge Base” under Knowledge Base Management on the left-hand side of the home screen. Under New Knowledge Base, I typed a Name and description of my new knowledge base, then proceeded to the Domain Management screen. Here I established a series of domains (fields) and then linked them all together as a composite domain (record set). Using the Create Domain button, I created the following domains according to the fields in my incoming data: Name Address Suite City State Zip I added a Suite column in my domain because Melissa Data has the ability to return missing Suites based on last name or company. And that’s a great benefit of using these third party providers, as they have data that the data steward would not normally have access to. The bottom line is, with these third party data providers, I can actually improve my data. Next, I created a composite domain (fulladdress) and added the (field) domains into the composite domain. This essentially groups our address fields together in a record to facilitate the full address cleansing they perform. I then selected my newly created composite domain and under the Reference Data tab, added my third party reference data provider –Melissa Data’s Address Check- and mapped in each domain that I had to the provider’s Schema. Now that my composite domain has been married to the Reference Data service, I can take the newly published knowledge base and create a project to cleanse and enrich my data. My next task was to create a new Data Quality project, mapping in my data source and matching it to the appropriate domain column, and then kick off the verification process. It took just a few minutes with some progress indicators indicating that it was working. When the process concluded, there was a helpful set of tabs that place the response records into categories: suggested; new; invalid; corrected (automatically); and correct. Accepting the suggestions provided by  Melissa Data allowed me to clean up all the records and flag the invalid ones. It is very apparent that DQS makes address data quality simplistic for any IT professional. Final Note As I have shown, DQS makes data quality very easy. Within minutes I was able to set up a data cleansing and enrichment routine within my data quality project, and ensure that my address data was clean, verified, and standardized against real reference data. As reviewed here, it’s easy to see how both SQL Server 2012 and DQS work to take what used to require a highly skilled developer, and empower an average business or database person to consume external services and clean data. • Certificate error with Web Platform Installer

    - by findleyd
A friend of mine was having an issue getting the Web Platform Installer to work on his Windows Server 2008 R2 box. He said there was some sort of cert error and asked me to try https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=158722 on my local machine to see if I got the cert error.  I tried it and I did get a cert error on Windows 7 64bit. I happened to notice that that url simply redirects to https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml . Out of curiosity I dropped to a command line and tried to run .\WebPlatformInstaller.exe /? to see if there were any command line options. It gave an error that said invalid URI. So we tried running it with the product list url like: "WebPlatformInstaller.exe https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml" . This seems to get around the expired cert that is on go.microsoft.com.  Here's a screen shot of the error:

  • Where do we put "asking the world" code when we separate computation from side effects?

    - by Alexey
According to Command-Query Separation principle, as well as Thinking in Data and DDD with Clojure presentations one should separate side effects (modifying the world) from computations and decisions, so that it would be easier to understand and test both parts. This leaves an unanswered question: where relatively to the boundary should we put "asking the world"? On the one hand, requesting data from external systems (like database, extental services' APIs etc) is not referentially transparent and thus should not sit together with pure computational and decision making code. On the other hand, it's problematic, or maybe impossible to tease them apart from computational part and pass it as an argument as because we may not know in advance which data we may need to request.

  • How would you advocate not using a shared spreadsheet to track bugs / issues ?

    - by Sylvain Defresne
In our company, the developers want to use a proper bug tracking tool to manager issues in our application. The management however insists on using a shared spreadsheet (formeerly a shared excel file, now a spreadsheet on a web base solution allowing concurrent access). Their argument is that the spreadsheet allow them to have a more highlevel view of the state of the project as they can see how many bugs are open with a quick glance. This also allow them to see who is working on each bug, and get estimation of the time required to close them all (as developer are required to fill time estimation of the bug they are working on). As you can understand, this is not really practical to use for the developers (bug tracking software were invented for a reason). So how can I advocate bug tracking software to ease the work of the developer ? As a bonus, which software would you recommend that would allow the management to be able to get their feedbacks (number of bugs opens, who is working on them, time estimation) with a high level view ?

  • Difference Procedural Generation and Random Generation

    - by U-No-Poo
Today, I got into an argument about the term "procedural generation". My point was that its different from "classic" random generation in the way that procedural is based on a more mathematical, fractal based, algorithm leading to a more "realistic" distribution and the usual randomness of most languages are based on a pseudo-random-number generator, leading to an "unrealistic", in a way, ugly, distribution. This discussion was made with a heightmap in mind. The discussion left me somehow unconvinced about my own arguments though, so, is there more to it? Or am I the one who is, in fact, simply wrong?

  • How can I get ddclient to work with freedns?

    - by Rob Fisher
I use the dynamic DNS service at freedns.afraid.org for my 12.04 server. I had assumed that the protocols would be standardised and that ddclient would just work, but apparently not. I get this message in /var/log/syslog: ERROR: Invalid update URL (2): unexpected status () I tried to use the updated version of ddclient from the alternative PPA described in this answer, but then I hit this error: FATAL: Error loading the Perl module Digest::SHA1 needed for freedns update. FATAL: On Debian, the package libdigest-sha1-perl must be installed. And when I try to install that package, I get this: E: Unable to locate package libdigest-sha1-perl Which leads me to this bug report, which apparently has no solution. How to proceed?

  • How to Automate your Database Documentation

In my previous post, “Automating Deployments with SQL Compare command line” I looked at how teams can automate the deployment and post deployment validation of SQL Server databases using the command line versions of Red Gate tools. In this post I’m looking at another use for the command line tools, namely using them to generate up-to-date documentation with every database change. There are many reasons why up-to-date documentation is valuable. For example when somebody new has to work on or administer a database for the first time, or when a new database comes into service. Having database documentation reduces the risks of making incorrect decisions when making changes. Documentation is very useful to business intelligence analysts when writing reports, for example in SSRS. There are a couple of great examples talking about why up to date documentation is valuable on this site:  Database Documentation – Lands of Trolls: Why and How? and Database Documentation Using SQL Doc. The short answer is that it can save you time and reduce risk when you need that most! SQL Doc is a fast simple tool that automatically generates database documentation. It can create documents in HTML, Word or pdf files. The documentation contains information about object definitions and dependencies, along with any other information you want to associate with each object. The SQL Doc GUI, which is included in Red Gate’s SQL Developer Bundle and SQL Toolbelt, allows you to add additional notes to objects, and customise which objects are shown in the docs.  These settings can be saved as a .sqldoc project file. The SQL Doc command line can use this project file to automatically update the documentation every time the database is changed, ensuring that documentation that is always up to date. The simplest way to keep documentation up to date is probably to use a scheduled task to run a script every day. However if you have a source controlled database, or are using a Continuous Integration (CI) server or a build server, it may make more sense to use that instead. If  you’re using SQL Source Control or SSDT Database Projects to help version control your database, you can automatically update the documentation after each change is made to the source control repository that contains your database. To get this automation in place,  you can use the functionality of a Continuous Integration (CI) server, which can trigger commands to run when a source control repository has changed. A CI server will also capture and save the documentation that is created as an artifact, so you can always find the exact documentation for a specific version of the database. This forms an always up to date data dictionary. If you don’t already have a CI server in place there are several you can use, such as the free open source Jenkins or the free starter editions of TeamCity. I won’t cover setting these up in this article, but there is information about using CI servers for automating database tasks on the Red Gate Database Delivery webpage. You may be interested in Red Gate’s SQL CI utility (part of the SQL Automation Pack) which is an easy way to update a database with the latest changes from source control. The PowerShell example below shows how to create the documentation from a database. That database might be your integration database or a shared development database that is always up to date with the latest changes. $serverName = "server\instance" $databaseName = "databaseName" # If you want to document multiple databases use a comma separated list $userName = "username" $password = "password" # Path to SQLDoc.exe $SQLDocPath = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Doc 3\SQLDoc.exe" $arguments = @( "/server:$($serverName)", "/database:$($databaseName)", "/username:$($userName)", "/password:$($password)", "/filetype:html", "/outputfolder:.", # "/project:$args[0]", # If you already have a .sqldoc project file you can pass it as an argument to this script. Values in the project will be overridden with any options set on the command line "/name:$databaseName Report", "/copyrightauthor:$([Environment]::UserName)" ) write-host $arguments & $SQLDocPath $arguments There are several options you can set on the command line to vary how your documentation is created. For example, you can document multiple databases or exclude certain types of objects. In the example above, we set the name of the report to match the database name, and use the current Windows user as the documentation author. For more examples of how you can customise the report from the command line please see the SQL Doc command line documentation If you already have a .sqldoc project file, or wish to further customise the report by including or excluding specific objects, you can use this project on the command line. Any settings you specify on the command line will override the defaults in the project. For details of what you can customise in the project please see the SQL Doc project documentation. In the example above, the line to use a project is commented out, but you can uncomment this line and then pass a path to a .sqldoc project file as an argument to this script.  Conclusion Keeping documentation about your databases up to date is very easy to set up using SQL Doc and PowerShell. By using a CI server to run this process you can trigger the documentation to be run on every change to a source controlled database, and keep historic documentation available. If you are considering more advanced database automation, e.g. database unit testing, change script generation, deploying to large numbers of targets and backup/verification, please email me at [email protected] for further script samples or if you have any questions.
