  • Is it good to use JQuery's validation plugin?

    Hi all, I am learning JQuery, and I have checked out that JQUery has got a validation plugin. http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Validation#Validate_forms_like_you.27ve_never_been_validating_before.21 To use it, users have to include another script file in the Head tag in HTML. I am thinking if this will cause any code collisions to the codes in the validation plugin when more and more javascript files are included. Should I use JQuery to write myself new customed functions for checking data input from users or use the JQuery data validation plugin? Please advise.

  • This should be real easy. How to find a button through its Value (Jquery Selector)

    I have this HTML: <div id='grid'> <input type="button" value="edit"/> <input type='button' value='update'/> </div> How to I attach a click event only to Update button. I know I could add a class to it or specity an id but both are not possible since it is in gridview. I tried this: $("input:button[@value='update']").click(function(){alert('test');}); but it displays an alert for both buttons. I know I must be doing something silly. Any help is much appreciated.     I'm considering one selection statement that would target one of many css class names in a single class attribute value based on a string prefix. For example, I want any detail- prefixed class names to get targeted from the following sample links. <a href="eg.html" class="detail-1 pinkify another"> <a href="eg.html" class="something detail-55 minded"> <a href="eg.html" class="swing narrow detail-Z"> <a href="eg.html" class="swing narrow detail-Z detail-88 detail-A"> It's reminiscent of how [class|="detail"] prefix selector works on a scalar attribute value, and also of .hasClass(className), but my question needs both concepts applied simultaneously. Note: The detail- prefix won't necessarily be the first class name of the bunch.

  • jQuery slideDown() not animating (jquery-rails 3.0.4; jquery-ui-rails (4.0.5)

    I am following along in the latest Agile Web Development with Rails 4 book. In Chapter 11 (AJAX), the book instructs us to use the following code in the "create.js.erb" file: if ($('#cart tr').length == 1) { $('#cart').show('blind', 1000); } This code causes the #cart div to jump down without any content. After 1 second it appears. There is no sliding effect. I tried using slideDown(); as well, but the div just appears immediately. Out of curiosity, I tried slideUp(); when the div was visible. Voila. The div slid up. This appears to be a jQuery bug and wondered if anyone else has experienced this, or has any suggestions for me. Thanks.

  • Does jQuery.on() work for elements that are added after the event handler is created?

    I was under the impression all this time that .on() worked like .live() with regards to dynamically created elements (e.g. I use $('.foo').on('click', function(){alert('click')}); and then an element with the class foo is created due to some AJAX, now I'm expecting a click on that element to cause an alert). In practice, these weren't the results I got. I could be making a mistake, but could somebody help me understand the new way to achieve these results, in the wake of .on()? Thanks in advance.

    With jQuery, I want to make all images under a specific path on a site clickable and showing a big image using Fancybox, which is a lighbox variant plugin for jQuery. My small images are located under "images/products/small", the big ones under "images/products/big" and the imagename is always the same The page is showing the image with the following code: <img src="images/products/small/hat.jpg" alt="Nice hat"> What i want is some jQuery script that makes this into: <a href="images/products/big/hat.jpg" class="fancybox"><img src="images/products/small/hat.jpg" alt="Nice hat"></a> Maybe the part with setting class on the link tag can be skipped and just activate fancybox on the element directly with $(elm).fancybox(); I was looking around a bit and it looks like the jQuery functions "attr" and "wrap" might be useful, but with my currently limited jQuery skills I can't really connect the dots.

    I have a form I am submitting via jquery ajax. Early in the form, I have this field: <select name="inquirymodule[]" id="inquirymodule"> The user can add as many as they like, and all the selects go into the inquirymodule[] array. The jQuery looks like this: jQuery.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'ajax.php', dataType: 'json', data: { inquirymodule: jQuery("select[name='inquirymodule[]']").serialize(), }, error: function(XMLHttpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown) { alert('error'); } }); That works fine. Trying to do the same thing with a date, like this: <input class="formInput" type="text" id="startBreak0" name='startbreak[]' /> adding startbreak: jQuery("select[name='startbreak[]']").serialize() to the ajax call. It doesn't work, I cannot see why. Suggestions?

Here's a simplified version of the link structure of the page: <a href="same/link/to/stuff/">same link</a> <a href="same/link/to/stuff/">same link</a> How do I fashion my selector so that it only selects the second anchor in the above example?   • Hover/Fadeto/Toggle Multiple Class Changing

    So my problem is rather simple and complex at the same time. I am trying to create links that fade in when you mouseover them and fade out when you mouseout of them. At the same time that you are going over them I would like a pic to slide from the left. This is the easy part, I have every thing working. The image fades and another image slides. I did this by using a hover, fadeto, and toggle("slide"). I would like to do this in a table format with multiple images being able to be scrolled over and sliding images out. The problem is that I am calling my sliding image to a class and when I hover over the letters both images slide out. Does anybody have a solution for this?   • Greasemonkey @require jQuery not working "Component not available"

    I've seen the other question on here about loading jQuery in a Greasemonkey. Having tried that method, with this require statement inside my ==UserScript== tags: // @require http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js I still get the following error message in Firefox's error console: Error: Component is not available Source File: file:///Users/greg/Library/Application%20Support/ Firefox/Profiles/xo9xhovo.default/gm_scripts/myscript/jquerymin.js Line: 36 This stops my greasemonkey code from running. I've made sure I included the @require for jQuery and saved my js file before installing it, as required files are only loaded on installation.     Dear all, I have implemented below function in a separate .js script file which I load in my main page (Asp.net mvc). The call back to server is rather costly but ok if specifically requested on the sub-page / content page on which my div tag needs to be filled. My problem is that the code runs on every page, including pages where the div tag is not present. How can I remedy my code?   • Using Jquery UI Tab control in ASP.NET MVC

    I am new to jquery and am trying out UI plugins. For some reason this following code does not work, in the sense, it does not render the tabs and it's just a bunch of text. But when I copy the page source and paste it in the html page, and put it in the views folder, everything looks great, so , I assume all the js paths are good.     I used the jQuery autocompletion for my Struts2 application. Pratically, my action made a list of strings that jQuery use. The problem is that the box render another value, exactly render the code of my JSP ( links to CSS for the autocomplete plug-in). How can I solve this?   • jquery slideToggle() and unknown height?

    Hello! Im using jquery 1.3.2 and this is the code: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ jQuery(function(){ jQuery('.news_bullet a.show_preview').click(function() { jQuery(this).siblings('div').slideToggle('slow'); return false; }).toggle( function() { jQuery(this).css({ 'background-position' : '0 -18px' }); }, function() { jQuery(this).css({ 'background-position' : '0 0' }); }); }); //]]> </script> If you see here i have bunch of small green + which when you click some text is revealed and background-position is changed for that link so then it shows the other part of image, red -. So the problem i am having is that i dont know the height for those hidden elements, because it depends on how much text there is, so when i click on + and show them, animation is 'jumping'. One workaround that i found is to put fixed height and overflow:hidden to those hidden elements. You can see how much smoother animation is running in top left block(the one with 'Vesti iz sveta crtanog filma' at the top). All other blocks dont have fixed height, and animation there is 'jumping'. Atm that fixed height in top left block is 30px, but ofc some elements require more height and some require less, so that is not a good solution... :) So how to stop this animation from 'jumping' when there is no fixed height?

  • Is jQuery always the answer?

    I've come across a couple questions, such as this one, and I really have to wonder why "Use jQuery" seems to be the answer when somebody asks how to do something in JavaScript. I understand that jQuery can save you a lot of time, and can help you out a lot, especially when you are doing a lot of fancy JavaScript in your site. However, in instances like this, and in many other instances, it seems like it's just jumping around the problem instead of answering the question. I also feel like this builds too much dependency into libraries. I've seen way too many developers that simply rely too much on libraries, and if they encounter a situation where they didn't have the library, they would be completely unable to function. I feel like there are already enough developers who don't know JavaScript, without just telling everybody to not learn JavaScript, and use jQuery. So, just to reiterate the question. Do you think there's too much of a tendency to use jQuery, for small pieces of JavaScript, when most of the functionality of jQuery isn't being used. Should developers be fluent in the use of bare JavaScript so they don't get too dependent on using libraries? [Additional related conversation topic] Does the existence of jQuery give too much slack to web browser developers who write the JavaScript engines? If we just have workarounds to cover all the inconsistencies in JavaScript, what pressure is there on browser makers to ensure that their JavaScript library works as it should. I feel like this extrapolates the same problem discussed in SO Podcast #36 of "be conservative in what you send, liberal in what you accept". By being so liberal with bad JavaScript engines, and using a common library to work around the flaws, we are promoting their use, and extending the problem.

  • jQuery RJS inserting string vs dom.

    So I am trying to use jQuery to insert data from an ajax call. I actually use the jquery.form plugin, and have the ajax form submitted with a dataType: 'script'. The response is a jquery expression which contains a <%= javascript_escape(render ...) %> erb tag (similar to what the railscasts episode 136 instructs to do). However the end result is that the full text of the render is inserted as if that was the content to be inserted into the page, as text, not as dom elements. Could the fact that the render had some newlines at the beginning be the cause? Dom text: "\n \n &lt;li>....&lt;/li>" I also tried having jQuery just read the response as a script and execute it, and used the prototype-based rjs stuff, same effect, the text is inserted into the dom. Are there any reasons why such a behavior would be experienced? A bit of clarification: My response.js.erb is jQuery("#content").append("<%= escape_javascript(render(:partial => "widgets")) %>"); jQuery("#information").text("Finally, something happened!"); The full text inside the append() call is inserted as text into #content.
