• iMac with Mountain Lion and Mavericks

  I have been starting up my iMac (Mavericks) with a flash drive that boots up Mountain Lion so that I can use an app that is incompatible with Mavericks. Question: I have a single external backup drive always connected to my Mac. I am thinking of partitioning that drive and giving each partition a unique name, e.g., Backup 1 and Backup 2. I intend then to boot up in Mavericks and tell Time Machine to back up to Backup 1, and then boot up in Mountain Lion and tell Time Machine to back up to Backup 2. Will this work, i.e., will the appropriate partition automatically back up the system in which it is booted?

• OS X SnowLeopard menubar icons appear/disappear in 8 second cycle

  I just bought a new Mac Mini, and used Migration Assistant to move a user from an iMac to it. All went well, except a very strange behavior... the default OS X menubar icons like time, spotlight, etc (but NOT user installed app icons like dropbox or xmarks) appear and disappear in a very regular 8 second cycle. They appear for about 2 seconds, and then disappear for about 6. This is a screenshot with the icons, and this is a screenshot without them. This is very annoying and I have not found anything online with similar symptoms. Any ideas?

• Is looking for Wi-Fi access points purely passive?

  Say I carry a Wi-Fi enabled phone or laptop through an area where there are WAPs. Assuming that I don't actively try to connect to them or otherwise interact with them, is it possible for the owner of that WAP to know that I was there? I'm asking this in the context of my earlier question: Looking for MACs on the network I was talking with a friend about my newfound ability to detect phones (and other devices with MAC addresses) on the network, and he pointed out that it might be useful to detect unknown phones on the network; I could use that data to track down anyone who was in my house and brought a Wi-Fi phone with them. So, if I set up a logging fake WAP with no security or encryption, can I glean any useful information about the devices that come into the house? Assuming that the thief doesn't actively try to connect...

• Boot camp install from a HDD image

  How would one go about imaging an old work computer (old IBM aptiva from 2001ish) with Windows XP and lots of stuff (VPN client with settings etc) to a new iMac, while preserving Mac OSX? I can't simply install XP on the iMac and then reinstall/copy across stuff; it NEEDS to be an image. Can you even image smaller HDD's and then place them on large ones, or do they have to be the same size? Recommendations on how I go about this? Edit: It MUST be boot camp. I don't want to virtualize it from within OsX

• How to automatically print the contents of a folder in OS X?

  I would like to be able to set up a folder on my Mac, where I could dump files and have them be automatically sent to the default printer. This way I would be able to print files at home when I'm not physically at home, using something like Dropbox. It wouldn't have to be real-time; i.e., a scheduled job that checks the folder every so often would be acceptable. What's the easiest approach? Automator? Applescript? Cron job?

• Thunderbird 3.0.2 stops automatically checking for email

  Since upgrading to Thunderbird 3.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.6, Thunderbird will intermittently stop checking for messages automatically. Frequently I am presented with the error "This folder is being processed" when manually checking for mail. Restarting Thunderbird fixes the problem, but I have noticed hours can go by where auto checking isn't working, and restarting shows there were dozens of messages waiting to be delivered in that down time. Occasionally I will see "indexing 1 of 2 messages - 0% complete" in the status bar, it will sit there for a long time. Actions I've taken to fix: Deleted all .msf files in all accounts Removed News & Blogs account Staggered the "automatically check for mail" interval for each account Worth noting: after waking up the macbook, TB usually needs to be restarted to resume auto checking for mail. Has anyone experienced such trouble?

• Display file/folder/drive names in full on the desktop

  In Mac OS X, when the text for a desktop icon is particularly long, it's displayed with an ellipsis: How do I configure whatever I'm supposed to configure (Finder?) to display that and all text in full? (No ellipses, please!) Edit: I do know that you can change the icon/text/grid size to allow for more text, but I don't necessarily want to change those settings. I want to change how Apple displays the text. That is, I want it to display either as one long string (which will run into other strings if two long file/folder names are next to each other, they will appear to overlap) or word-wrapped according to the size of the grid.

Some of them are not password protected and invariably I get connected to that wifi first. I have talked to the person who owns that wifi. But he is somehow not listening about adding password to his network. So, is there a way I can block that Wifi network completely so that I do not connect to it? I have Win 7 and Mac at my office.

• Hack/software to easily move screen mapping of a wacom tablet?

  I would like to move/manipulate the mapping of my Wacom tablet to my screen as easily as with Inklet: http://tenonedesign.com/inklet.php Is anyone aware of any software or hack to acheive this on Mac OS X? If not I'm thinking about trying to write a script that centers the mapping on the current cursor position, and then bidning that to a button on my tablet. Combined with a script for toggling between fullscreen/part of screen-mapping that should be enough. My idea so far is to edit the .prefs file since it's plain XML, and then restart the tablet driver. But any pointers relating to this would be most welcome, since my knowledge of this kind of things is rudimentary.

  I have a bootable .img file that I want to convert to a bootable .iso file. I downloaded poweriso for Mac and used this command: poweriso convert MyOS.img -o MyOS.iso -ot iso which returned this output: PowerISO Copyright(C) 2004-2008 PowerISO Computing, Inc Type poweriso -? for help MyOS.img: The file format is invalid or unsupported. I thought PowerISO could convert .img to .iso. Was I incorrect, or did I use the wrong commands or something like that?

  I'm trying to SSH from one Mac running OS X 10.6 to another. Seems to work fine via a password, but I can't get it to use a RSA key instead. Where is the ssh configuration file on OS X and what is the command to reload SSH? Update What I'm asking is how to configured advanced options. For example, on Ubuntu there is a ssh config file at /etc/ssh/sshd_config and if you do something like change the port or disable password authentication for a particular user (PasswordAuthentication no) you need to run /etc/init.d/ssh reload to reload the config. I didn't see that file on OS X, so was just wondering where it was. I am aware of the ~/.ssh ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and `~/.ssh/config

• Mac OSX 10.8 Server DNS Domain Routing

  I just cant seem to figure out the logic in how to configure my Mac Server. So I have set up an DNS, which will take the domain and all subdomains and point towards an IP. File: db.mydomain.com (in /var/named/) mydomain.com. 10800 IN SOA mydomain.com. admin.mydomain.com. ( 2012110903 ; serial 3600 ; refresh (1 hour) 900 ; retry (15 minutes) 1209600 ; expire (2 weeks) 86400 ; minimum (1 day) ) 10800 IN NS mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 www.mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 So I want all of these requests to be requested to the 10.0.1.2 server, as I run 2 servers in my cluster. This one has always handled the requests, and now I want to add a server in between. So the server in between will get all the signals from my router which NAT the trafic coming from outside. So after setting this up and trying to point my port 80 towards my new server which will be the middle point, it doesn't work. Is it even possible to do it this way? First server: Mac Second server: Linux So what I try to achieve once more: 1. User goes to mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com 2. User request gets handled by my first server 3. First server refers to a local server, which is only available locally (it is configured to allow requests on port 80 and handle them) 4. Second server receives signal 5. Second server returns a request (either directly send to user or send through first server, whichever is most secure and configurable) I also want to be able to set up domains that lead to other servers in the future, and some that are only available within the VPN. (If that changes anything) I hope some kind soul could help me with this, it is really cumbersome for my mind to get the logic here. Do I have to configure my other server in any way? /Marcus

  I'm following a video tutorial where the author (who uses textmate) can open files by using "mate". for example mate .git/config will open this config file I'm using textwrangler however so I don't have that option. I did try edit .README once when i tried to open the README file of an application, but it opened a blank README file in textwrangler instead of the file with the text in it so any idea how I can open this .git/config file (or any other file) using textwrangler? • HELP! Snow Leopard's Desktop Icons keeps Resizing Repeatedly

  I'm using a new macbook 10.6.5. I've been using mac OS for years. However, the problem that I'm getting is that the desktop icons keep resizing repeatedly. It keeps going to the biggest size possible and its driving me crazy. I've been resizing it back to medium size all the time. But when I start doing something at the finder it starts resizing by itself once again. Is there a fix to this problem? Please help.

• Windows 7/8 can't connect to an N Router

  I have a router running OpenWRT backfire, with N and A/B/G being broadcast. A linux laptop, and a Mac laptop can see the N network and connect to it (or at least they could last weekend). But there is now a Windows 7 Desktop with a B/G/N wireless card, and a Windows 8 Laptop with a B/G/N wireless card that can't see the N network only the B/G broadcast. The B/G and N have different SSID's and Encryption ( WEP and WPA2 PSK respectively ). The N SSID isn't even visible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot further? • Does NAT change the source MAC address?

  I'm trying to secure my home network but don't really need the complexity of a VPN so I'm trying to figure out other options. I'd like to allow my iPhone remote access to my home servers but I can't depend on the IP address because it changes quite often (due to the 3G network, etc). Can I filter incoming connections on my router (pfsense) by MAC address or does NAT change the source as it's passing through the different routers on the internet?

• Disable word completion dialog when pressing escape in Safari

  Behavior: Load Safari 5.0 on mac. Press command+f to search for some text. Type something, and find it on the page. Hit esc to cancel the search. Irritatingly, get word completion menu rather than canceling. Is there any way to make esc cancel the search, like it used to with Safari 4.0, instead of pulling up a word completion dialog? It's very annoying. Failing that, what's the best way to cancel the search with the keyboard? Note: this also happens in any text field, the search box, the location bar etc.

  I use Snow Leopard, and I'm used to activate / deactivate WiFi like 20 times per day. The reason is that WiFi stops working properly after a few minutes of use. So every time I try to surf, I must stop/reactivate it first. But now, suddenly I have to enter my user password every time I want to do it. It's so annoying! The dialogue details say: Right: com.apple.airport.power Program: SystemUIServer What can I do that the Mac won't ask me for the password every time?   Hi, on Mac, you know there is no 'merge files' when you ctrl+c/ctrl+v some folder on another one, it actually replaces it. I'm simply wondering on what UNIX is this based? because correct me if I'm wrong, but "cp - R" DOES merge files, no?   Hi I wanted to reformat my HP 500GB hard disk to MS DOS (FAT) by using Disk Utility but Disk Utility kept saying that the hard disk cannot be unmounted. I tried googling it but nothing seems to answer my question. I'm not trying to reformat the hard disk in my Mac but my external hard disk! I usually format my hard disks to clear the documents I no longer need. And I'll change it to ExFat but currently, whenever I plug in my hard disk on Windows, the whole system just hangs there.   I can't seem to be able to install Windows 7 64-bit on a 2008 MacBook (64-bit dual core) from an external USB DVD drive. I've done the following: Performed a clean install of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installed all system updates Run Boot Camp Assistant - when the system restarts I get an error stating "no bootable disc" Used rEFIt, but I still get the same error Made a bootable USB drive from an ISO of the Windows 7 installation disc, but I still get the same error Tried using Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP, but I still get the same error How I can resolve this?
