• IE History Tracking, IFRAMES, and Cross Domain error...

  So here's the deal. We have a Flash application that is running within an HTML file. For one page we call a legacy reporting system in ASP.NET that is within an IFRAME. This page then communicates back to the Flash application using cross-domain scripting (document.domain = "domain" is set in both pages. THIS ALL WORKS. Now the kicker. Flash has history tracking enabled. This loads the history.js file that created a div tag to store page changes so the back and forward buttons work in the browser. Which works for Firefox and Chrome as they create a div tag. HOWEVER In Internet Explorer, history.js creates another IFRAME (instead of a DIV) called ie_historyFrame. When the ScriptResource.axd code attempts to access this with: var frameDoc = this._historyFrame.contentWindow.document; we get an "Access is Denied" error message. ARGH! We've tried getting a handle to this IFRAME and inserting the document.domain code. FAIL. We've tried editing the historytemplate.html file that flex also uses to include document.domain... FAIL. I've tried to edit the underlying ASP.NET page to disable history tracking in the ScriptManager control. FAIL. At my wit's end on this one. We have users who need to use IE to access this site. They are big clients who we cannot tell to just use Firefox. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Capture keystrokes (e.g., function keys) while a messagebox is up

  We have a large WinForms app, and there is a built-in bug reporting system that can be activated during testing via the F5 Key. I am capturing the F5 key with .Net's PreFilterMessage system. This works fine on the main forms, modal dialog boxes, etc. Unfortunately, the program also displays windows messageboxes when it needs to. When there is a bug with that, e.g., wrong text in the messagebox or it shouldn't be there, the messagefilter isn't executed at all when the messagebox is up! I realize I could fix it by either rewriting my own messagebox routine, or kicking off a separate thread that polls GetAsyncKeyState and calls the error reporter from there. However I was hoping for a method that was less of a hack. • What are good NoSQL and non-relational database solutions for audit/logging database

  What would be suitable database for following? I am especially interested about your experiences with non-relational NoSQL systems. Are they any good for this kind of usage, which system you have used and would recommend, or should I go with normal relational database (DB2)? I need to gather audit trail/logging type information from bunch of sources to a centralized server where I could generate reports efficiently and examine what is happening in the system. Typically a audit/logging event would consist always of some mandatory fields, for example globally unique id (some how generated by program that generated this event) timestamp event type (i.e. user logged in, error happened etc) some information about source (server1, server2) Additionally the event could contain 0-N key-value pairs, where value might be up to few kilobytes of text. It must run on Linux server It should work with high amount of data (100GB for example) it should support some kind of efficient full text search It should allow concurrent reading and writing It should be flexible to add new event types and add/remove key-value pairs to new events. Flexible=no changes should be required to database schema, application generating the events can just add new event types/new fields as needed. it should be efficient to make queries against database. For reporting and exploring what happened. For example: How many events with type=X occurred in some time period. Get all events where field A has value Y. Get all events with type X and field A has value 1 and field B is not 2 and event occurred in last 24h

• Installing SQLServer 2005 on Windows 7 64bit

  Hi , It's 3 days I'm trying to install SqlServer 2005 under Windows 7 64 bit on my machine . First let me tell you what I've done and what I've got till now . 1-I Installed Windows 7 64 Bit on my computer 2-I tried to install SQl Server 2005 "Developer Edition" 2.1 But in "System Configuration Check" Page i recieved 2 warning , One for "IIS Feature Requirement" and another for "ASP.NET Version Registration Rquired" . 2.1.1 . I installed "Internet Information Services" from "Turn Windows features on or off" section in control panel 2.1.2 I Enabled reporting service 32 bit from "Inetpub= AdminScripts = adsutil.vbs 2.2 At this stage There was no waring in System Configuration Check 3- So I installed SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition By all default settings 4- I installed Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 64 bit Now when when i run "Management Studio" There is no name in "Server name" section . I typed my Computer name Or "." and i got this Error : A network -related instance-specific error occurred while establishinga connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider , error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server ) ( Microsoft SQL Server , Error :2) . I googled some for this Error and some people said follow this instruction: Startsql server 2005Configuration toolsSql Server Surface Configuration AreaSurface Area Configuration for services and Connections But i got this Error : No SQl SErver 2005 Components were found on the specified computer . Either no components are installed , or you are not a administrator on this computer (SQLSAC) I'm really tired because of that , and i don't know what's wrong with this . Some more information : I have no additonal software on my computer , like Antivirus or Proxy I tried all step with "Standard Edition" either , but no difference My user is Administrator I tried more than 5 times all those steps including re-installing Windows 7 . Please help me , I'm losing all my hair

• Can a call to WaitHandle.SignalAndWait be ignored for performance profiling purposes?

  I just downloaded the trial version of ANTS Performance Profiler from Red Gate and am investigating some of my team's code. Immediately I notice that there's a particular section of code that ANTS is reporting as eating up to 99% CPU time. I am completely unfamiliar with ANTS or performance profiling in general (that is, aside from self-profiling using what I'm sure are extremely crude and frowned-upon methods such as double timeToComplete = (endTime - startTime).TotalSeconds), so I'm still fiddling around with the application and figuring out how it's used. But I did call the developer responsible for the code in question and his immediate reaction was "Yeah, that doesn't surprise me that it says that; but that code calls SignalAndWait [which I could see for myself, thanks to ANTS], which doesn't use any CPU, it just sits there waiting for something to do." He advised me to simply ignore that code and look for anything ELSE I could find. My question: is it true that SignalAndWait requires NO CPU overhead (and if so, how is this possible?), and is it reasonable that a performance profiler would view it as taking up 99% CPU time? I find this particularly curious because, if it's at 99%, that would suggest that our application is often idle, wouldn't it? And yet its performance has become rather sluggish lately. Like I said, I really am just a beginner when it comes to this tool, and I don't know anything about the WaitHandle class. So ANY information to help me to understand what's going on here would be appreciated.

• Storing statistics of multple data types in SQL Server 2008

  I am creating a statistics module in SQL Server 2008 that allows users to save data in any number of formats (date, int, decimal, percent, etc...). Currently I am using a single table to store these values as type varchar, with an extra field to denote the datatype that it should be. When I display the value, I use that datatype field to format it. I use sprocs to calculate the data for reporting; and the datatype field to convert to the appropriate datatype for the appropriate calculations. This approach works, but I don't like storing all kinds of data in a varchar field. The only alternative that I can see is to have separate tables for each datatype I want to store, and save the record information to the appropriate table based on datatype. To retreive, I run a case statement to join the appropriate table and get the data. This seems to solve. This however, seems like a lot of work for ... what gain? Wondering if I'm missing something here. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks in advance!

• E-commerce platform for custom application integration

  We are building an online subscription-based website and I'm looking for recommendations on which e-commerce platform to use for the checkout process. Requirements include: Only four products. The sign-up process of the site is heavily customized, and after checkout the user should automatically get logged into the subscriber area. Subscriptions will last one year and can be renewed manually. Support for coupons/discount codes at a later point. Since the entire application is custom, we've weighed building a custom checkout but are strongly leaning towards using existing software to avoid having to build lots of admin reporting as well as a coupon engine down the road. The two questions we're pondering are: Is it better to a) build our application custom and use whatever e-commerce software we select just for the payment piece, or b) use the e-commerce software as the basis and build our application around it/as a module/etc? Which e-commerce platform should we use? I've looked into a variety of off the shelf e-commerce software, but it's not clear to me which would be easiest to integrate with. I've researched on the Web and looked at many of the threads on SO to compiled a list of potential candidates: www.magentocommerce.com/ (seems difficult to integrate with) www.prestashop.com/ www.nopcommerce.com/ www.opencart.com/ www.cubecart.com/ www.spreecommerce.com/ www.interspire.com/ www.tradingeye.com/ We're most concerned with the level of effort required with ramping up on the software and then doing the integration with our custom functionality. We're most proficient with PHP, ASP.NET and some ROR and are only considering those technologies. We prefer open source, but would be open to commercial if there's a significant upside. Any experiences with similar projects and advice is greatly appreciated.

• IE7 - visited links revert to unvisted after page refresh

  Hello, A number of our users have just upgraded from IE6 to IE7. the upgreaded users are reporting an issue with visited links reverting to their unvisited color after a page refresh. This only happens to links that are using javascript instead of a hard coded URL: <script lang="JavaScript"> <!-- function LoadGoogle() { var LoadGoogle = window.open('http://www.google.com'); } --> </script> <a href="javascript:LoadGoogle()">Google using javascript</a> <a href="#" OnClick="javascript:LoadGoogle()">Google using javascript OnClick</a> The above links will revert back to the unvisited color whenever the page is refreshed. It doesn't matter if the page is refreshed because of a post back, manually hitting the refresh or f5 button, or from an auto-refresh function. Please note, the above code is an over simplification of what is actually happening, but I believe it illustrates the issue well enough. This is causing a problem for our users because we are providing them with a list of items that are all opened into new windows via javascript when they are clicked; and refresh the parent page when the users are finished with them. Each time the parent page is refreshed all of these links revert back to their unvisited color, so our users are losing track of which items they've worked on. I've been digging around and it looks like this is intended behavior. IE7 doesn't register these links with the browsers history. Does anyone know a work around that will allow us to keep these javascript links in the visited state without having to do a major overhaul of the apps code? Thank you.

• what is this internet explorer (javascript?) syntax error -2146827286?

  Hi everyone, So, I've been trying to troubleshoot this bug where some big percentage of windows users who are on my ajax (jquery) web app are not able to play. I haven't been able to reproduce it on my end with a windows 7 IE8 running in a parallels vm. The main problem seems to be in the javascript somewhere because what users are complaining about is an ajax button isn't working. They click it and nothing happens, so either the event isn't firing, or my ajax call is failing, and possibly the return from the ajax could be failing. After trying some ideas, a friend suggested I check out damnit! https://damnit.jupiterit.com/ which will catch exceptions in javascript and email them to you. This is a pretty awesome tool! So, now i have a little more data, but, am stuck. Basically it seems like the majority of the exceptions seem to be complaining about a syntax error. I will paste the samples below. message: Syntax error number: -2146827286 description: Syntax error Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0) What's interesting is that the syntax error is consistently occurring in browsers reporting MSIE 8.0 but with windows vista, xp, and below, so older OS with the latest IE. Does anyone know of this error? Could this possibly be some weird slow computer/slow internet connection thing where may be my javascript files aren't fully loaded before I call the functions. I am using the jquery $(document).ready() to wait before I setup anything.

• Windows system monitoring and profiling

  I have several dozen 64-bit Windows 2003 servers in a high performance environment with very bursty system utilization. I am looking for a tool (or tools) to monitor and analyze system performance (eg, CPU utilization, bandwidth, etc). This tool can either query servers from a central location (SNMP) or require installation of a component on each server. It should poll on a 1-second interval. It should be able to generate pretty graphs which show trends over time. As a nice-to-have, it should be able to send out emails or IMs when certain thresholds are exceeded. The tools I have investigated so far, including Solarwinds and PRTG, are not designed to poll this frequently. They seem to be designed for a ~30-second interval. Solarwinds wouldn't go lower than 3-sec, and PRTG chokes at 1-sec. They both default to 1-min. All three tools seem more focused on outage monitoring and reporting than metric collection. Given the bursty nature of our applications, such infrequent polling would result in a very inaccurate picture of performance. I am considering rolling my own solution using perfmon. This would be a lot of work, and seems like reinventing the wheel. Are there any tools out there that meet my needs?

• FancyURLOpener failing since moving to python 3.1.2

  I had an application that was downloading a .CSV file from a password-protected website then processing it futher. I was using FancyURLOpener, and simply hardcoding the username and password. (Obviously, security is not a high priority in this particular instance). Since downloading Python 3.1.2, this code has stopped working. Does anyone know of the changes that have happened to the implementation? • Feasibility of using Silverlight for web and windows client with common code base for data intensive

  Hello. Recently in a conversation, someone suggested me to make use of Silverlight if I am targeting a web client and a windows client for the same application. This will cut down my effort for supporting the contrast in both presentation layers. Mine is a product, that will be deployed in enterprises. Both web and windows clients are desirable. With the above context, I have few queries: Is it advisable to adopt the recommended approach and whether this approach is becoming a trend? Besides, some configuration & deployment tweaking, will this significantly reduce effort on the presentation layer? Is there a possibility that my future prospects (for this product) will resist Silverlight footprint? Will I be able to make use of the ASP.Net MVC pattern? Will there be any performance implication for the web client? Will Silverlight support incremental load of controls? If my back-end includes SSRS, will I be able to harness all its front end features with Silverlight? Will I be able to support additional devices with same code base in future? Mine is a very data intensive application from both, data entry and reporting perspective. Is it advisable to use 3rd party controls (like Telerik) for improved user experience and developer productivity? Are their any professional quality open source Silverlight controls (library) available? Further, I seek information of best practices in the context I shared above.

• LINQ compiled query DataBind issue

  Hello All, I have a pretty extensive reporting page that uses LINQ. There is one main function that returns an IQueryable object. I then further filter / aggregate the returned query depending on the report the user needs. I changed this function to a compiled query, it worked great, and the speed increase was astonishing. The only problem comes when i want to databind the results. I am databinding to a standard asp.net GridView and it works fine, no problems. I am also databinding to an asp.net chart control, this is where my page is throwing an error. this works well: GridView gv = new GridView(); gv.DataSource = gridSource; But this does not: Series s1 = new Series("Series One"); s1.Points.DataBindXY(gridSource, "Month", gridSource, "Success"); The error i receive is this: System.NotSupportedException Specified method is not supported When i look into my gridSource var at run time i see this using a typical linq query: SELECT [t33].[value2] AS [Year], [t33].[value22] AS [Month], [t33].[value3] AS [Calls]...... I see this after i change the query to compiled: {System.Linq.OrderedEnumerable<<>f__AnonymousType15<string,int,int,int,int,int,int,int>,string>} This is obviously the reason why the databindxy is no longer working, but i am not sure how to get around it. • Crystal Reports .Net Guidance

  We have been using .Net and Visual Studio for the last six years, and early on developed a number of web based reporting applications using the .Net version of Crystal Reports that was bundled with Visual Studio. My overall opinion of that product has been, to say the least, rather unimpressed. It seemed to be incredibly difficult and convoluted to use, we had to make security changes, install various extra software, and so on. Now, we are moving to VS2008 and version 3.5 of the .Net framework, and the time has come to redevelop some of these old applications. The developers who used (and somehow mastered) Crystal .Net have long gone, and I am facing a decision - do we stick with Crystal Reports or move to something else. We also have the "full" version of Crystal Reports XI at our disposal. The way we use the product is to product pdf versions of data extracted from various databases. While some apps use the inbuilt Crystal Reports viewer as well, this seems to be redundant now with the flexibility of grid views - but there is still the need to produce a pdf version of the data in teh grid for printing, or in Excel format to download. What is the concensus? Is Crystal Reports .Net worth persisting with, or should we work out how to use version XI? Alternatively, is there a simple and low cost way to generate pdf reports without using Crystal? What good sources of "how to" information have others found and recommend? Are there suitable books, designed for VS2008 / .Net 3.5 development that you have used and found of benefit? Thanks in advance.

• How to do fixed price quote for design sessions?

  Normally when I do a system for a customer, I do design sessions on an hourly rate and then come out with a fixed price quotation for the full system development. Now this customer has thrown me a curveball: he doesn't want an hourly rate for design, either - he wants me to quote a fixed price to do all the design, too! Not that he's trying to cheap out, but he doesn't want to be in a situation where the longer design stretches out, the more he has to pay - and I can understand that. For the business layer it was actually not too difficult to work with this, because from his original functional spec I got a good idea of what the core business objects were, and in our design agreement I defined several objects which would be covered by a fixed design price; if any new non-trivial objects were discovered, they would be considered variances, and those would be billed on an hourly rate. So far so good. But when it comes to the UI, things start getting a lot more woolly. How many screens will there be? Don't know yet. What's going to be on each screen? Don't know yet. All we know is that it's a "dashboard" type of system, and there will be a lot of visual reporting involved e.g. gauges, graphs, etc. So maybe make it fixed price per screen design? Not a great definition; he might say that everything is going to be on one screen. Maybe a price per "visual report" design, including ability to slice & dice? Again not so easy - it might be that the entire system is just one report, and all the intelligence is going to go into how to present that segmentation. Anyone have any ideas how to do a fixed price quotation for a UI design like this?

• Sybase SQLAnywhere jConnect routines?

  I have a database which is part of a closed system and the end-user of the system would like me to write some reports using the data contains in a Sybase SQL Anywhere Database. The system doesn't provide the reports that they are looking for, but access to the data is available by connecting to this ASA database. The vendor of the software would likely prefer I not update the database and I am basically read-only as I am just doing some reporting. All is good, seal is not broken, warranty still intact, etc,etc.. My main problem is that I am using jConnect in order to read from the database, and jConnect requires some "jConnect Routines" to be installed into the database. I've found that I can make this happen by just doing an "Alter Database Upgrade JConnect On", but I just don't fully understand what this does and if there is any risks associated with it. So, my question is does anyone know exactly what jConnect routines are and how are they used? Is there any risk adding these to a database? Should I be worried about this?

• LinkageError thrown when attempting to pass instance of class between 2 eclipse plugins

  I have found many people with simliar issues but no soultions...basically I have two eclipse plug-ins that both in ther class path rely on the same jar. The UI plug-in replies on the Driver plug-in (implementing a custom ODA driver and UI for it). • Catching MediaPlayer Exceptions from WPF MediaElement Control

  I'm playing video in a MediaElement in WPF. It's working 1000's of times, over and over again. Once in a blue moon (like once a week), I get a windows exception (you know the dialog Dr. Watson Crash??) that happens. The MediaElment doesn't expose an error, it just crashes and sits there with an ugly Crash report on the screen. If you "view this report" you can see it is in fact MediaPlayer that has crashed. I know I can disable the crash reports from popping up - but I'm more interested in finding out what's going wrong. I'm not sure how to capture the results of the Dr. Watson capture, but I have the dialog open now if someone has advice on a better way to capture. • Ruby on Rails / Yellow Maps For Ruby Plugin woes...

  Okay I've read through the plugin comments and the docs as well and I have yet to come up with an answer as to how to do this. Here's my problem I want to use the :info_window_tabs and the :icon option, but I don't know what format to pass my information in. According to the documentation the following code should be correct. Here's my code: @mapper.overlay_init(GMarker.new([map.lat, map.lng], :title => map.name, :info_window_tabs => [ {:tab => "HTML", :content => @marker_html}, {:tab => "Attachments", :content => "stuff"}], :icon => { :image => "../images/icon.png" })) The readme and documentation can be viewed here.   I have a MediaElement that is reporting its position incorrectly and weirdly, but consistently. It seems like when it gets to the last second of the audio (and it's always the last second, regardless if the sound is two seconds or 10), it doesn't update it's position until it finishes.   Sorry for the lame title, my descriptive skills are poor today. In a nutshell, I have a query similar to the following: SELECT P.LAST_NAME, P.FIRST_NAME, D.DEMO_GROUP FROM PERSON P JOIN PERSON_DEMOGRAPHIC PD ON PD.PERSON_ID = P.PERSON_ID JOIN DEMOGRAPHIC D ON D.DEMOGRAPHIC_ID = PD.DEMOGRAPHIC_ID This returns output like this: LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME DEMO_GROUP --------------------------------------------- Johnson Bob Male Smith Jane Female Smith Jane Teacher Beeblebrox Zaphod Male Beeblebrox Zaphod Alien Beeblebrox Zaphid Politician I would prefer the output be similar to the following: LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME Male Female Teacher Alien Politician --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Johnson Bob 1 0 0 0 0 Smith Jane 0 1 1 0 0 Beeblebrox Zaphod 1 0 0 1 1 The number of rows in the DEMOGRAPHIC table varies, so I can't say with certainty how many columns I need. The query needs to be flexible. Yes, it would be trivial to do this in code. But this query is one piece of a complicated set of stored procedures, views, and reporting services, many of which are outside my sphere of influence. I need to produce this output inside the database to avoid breaking the system. Any ideas? This is MS SQL Server 2005, by the way. Thanks.

• Jquery Flexigrid reload only if flexigrid initially ran

  Im trying to use flexigrid to show results using the values from a form. So when a person clicks a form I want it to load the flexigrid function if its the first time the person clicked the button to initialize the table. Then if someone adjusts the values in the form then clicks the button again it then reloads the flexigrid table with the new form values. How can I do this in one function? • SEO - Problems possibly related to 301 Moved Permanently

  Right, here's the story: We have had a website for one of our brands now for many years, the site design was very bad and recently did a complete overhaul, mostly design, but also some of the backend code. The original site was using links such as this example.com/products/item/127 and thus I wanted to change them to be move user friendly, especially to include the product name, the same link now reads example.com/product/127/my-jucy-product/. Since our switch over we have seen our Google results take a beating (we were on the first page for our normal search terms, now we're nearer the 4th!). The other problem we're having is that the links to the old products haven't updated to the new links despite me coding a 301 redirect from old to new. The 301 is not being fired from .htaccess, but in our PHP framework. I had a look at how the site is being loaded from a old link that is still in Google and here's what firebug is reporting: GET <google link> 302 Found GET example.com/products/item/127 302 Found GET example.com/products/item/127 301 Moved Permanently GET example.com/product/127/my-jucy-product/ 302 Found So the Google link has a 302, good. But when the old link comes in our framework is returning a 302! It's only afterwards when it finally hits the right part of the framework does it 301, so here's my question: Is the reason our old links have not changed and our Google Ranking has significantly nose dived because Google is seeing a 302 before the 301? At the time I was reluctant to mess with our .htaccess because it had become pretty complicated and I was under some pretty intense time constraints, now I'm wondering whether this was an incorrect disicion and perhaps I should revisit it. Many thanks! Edit Bugger, just signed up to the Webmaster Tools and I'm getting redirect errors all over the place, hundreds of them! I think this is my problem.
