• Apple keyboard key remapping under Ubuntu

  I have an Apple keyboard that I simply love. I now hate my regular keyboard at work. I just have a small problem with the Apple keyboard. There is no "insert" key. The one that is usually Insert on regualr keyboard is replaced by the "fn" key. I would like to keep the fn functionality, as it is useful with the Fx keys on the top of my keyboard. If I have another key that I want to remap, whoe can I get the code, and then assign the code to the "Insert" function ? I mainly use this key for clipboard stuff (Ctrl-Ins, Shift-Ins), and sometime I have no other option than use the mouse, which is something I want to avoid. For example, the "Eject" button could be re-assigned, or use the F13..F19 keys, which are not on regular keyboards anyway. Thanks :-)

• Capistrano deploying to different servers with different authentication methods

  I need to deploy to 2 different server and these 2 servers have different authentication methods (one is my university's server and the other is an amazon web server AWS) I already have running capistrano for my university's server, but I don't know how to add the deployment to AWS since for this one I need to add ssh options for example to user the .pem file, like this: ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "test.pem")] ssh_options[:forward_agent] = true I have browsed starckoverflow and no post mention about how to deal with different authentication methods this and this I found a post that talks about 2 different keys, but this one refers to a server and a git, both usings different pem files. This is not the case. I got to this tutorial, but couldn't find what I need. I don't know if this is relevant for what I am asking: I am working on a rails app with ruby 1.9.2p290 and rails 3.0.10 and I am using an svn repository Please any help os welcome. Thanks a lot

• standard keyboard doesn't work, but hotkeys do.

  I posted earlier, but I've learned more about the problem since. (windows xp sp3) AVAST found alureon in kbdclass.sys and atapi.sys. I quarantined both files and restarted. keyboard and cdrom weren't working. I uninstalled them in device manager and updated the drivers. That fixed the cdrom but not the keyboard. Oddly, the keyboard hotkeys work (the row of special keys across the top for calculator, windows explorer, mail, browser) but the standard keys do not. I uninstalled and reinstalled SP3 to no avail. Any advice? not sure if I should have reposted this but I thought the hotkeys working might be an important point left out in the first post. Sorry if I'm doing this wrong ;/

I want to be able to connect the shell to everything socat can handle (SOCKS 5, UDP, OpenSSL), but also to have a nice shell which correctly interprets all keys, various Ctrl+C/Ctrl+Z, tab completion, up/down keys (with remote history). Update: Found "setsid" socat option. It fixes "no job control". Now trying to fix Ctrl+D. Update 2: socat file:`tty`,raw,echo=0 exec:'bash -li',pty,stderr,setsid,sigint,sane. Not it handles Ctrl+D/Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+C well, I can start Vim inside it, remote history is OK.

• VMware ESXi - vSphere - Can't exit VM console access

  I'm running ESXi 4.1 on a Dell T110 Server I connect to ESXi using vSphere vSphere is running inside a Windows 7 VM The Windows 7 VM is running in VMware Fusion on my Mac OS X system When I'm in vSphere and I've selected a VM and I click the console tab on some systems the VM console won't release me when I press the control + command keys. pfSense (FreeBSD) and Ubuntu Server behave like this. I can't exit their console screen. I have to shut down these VM's to be released from their VM console access. Windows, Ubuntu Desktop, etc. all behave like I'd expect; When I press the control + command keys I'm released from the VM console and I'm able to navigate in vSphere. Does anyone know what might be causing this or a way around this? Thanks in advance.

  I'm a newbie in desktop recording and screencasting. I didn't find a suitable free application to do all the things I want it to do, but I did enjoy using jing. I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar) highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows? It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. I'm open to commercial software too, but I would prefer a free one. Thank you!

• Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree? If not, do you have any other tips for keyboard navigation of the file open dialog in Windows 7?

• Find the product key I entered for MS Office on Mac

  I have several legal license keys for Office:mac 2008. I want to do a quick audit of the two machines I've installed office on and verify which license keys are being used where. But I don't see the license key anywhere on the about dialog (or elsewhere). I've seen other postings on the 'net directing me to look at various .plist files, but those only give me the "Product ID" which is different from the license key (which MS calls the "Product Key" on the little sticker). Is there a way outside of calling MS to correlate the Product Key (which is required for installation and is the real license key) to the Product ID I see in the app itself?

• Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card?   I have setup ssh agent forwarding, and I know it works. I also have many keys setup in the agent. The problem is there are so many keys that I get: Received disconnect from XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: 2: Too many authentication failures for bob The way around this is to use IdentitiesOnly=yes so that ssh will only send the identity you want it to for the specified host. I've also gotten this implemented and I know it works, without agent forwarding. Now, I'm trying to combine the two features. That is, I want to use agent forwarding, but also be able to specify which identity to use when connecting. Problem is, I can't figure out how to do this. So, I want to connect from box A through box B to box C. Box A has all of the identity files and the ssh agent running. I want to edit box A or B's ssh config file(s) to use a specific identity that exists in box A's agent (which is being forwarded).

  I suppose this could be asked on Server Fault as well, but it is specific to the client so I thought I'd start here. I have keys for a OpenVPN server already in place. I have used these keys to connect already, but using a Windows XP machine.   Do you know any keyboard that does not have a numpad and, at the same time, is not a compact keyboard? I type a lot and I enjoy using standard full sized keyboards. I am annoyed by the presence of the numpad. I've never used it; it just wastes desktop space! All I could find are (even more annoying) compact keyboards. Sadly those keyboards are so compact that cram the arrow keys and the page up/down keys in a very little space. So, does anyone know a keyboard with a normal layout but without the numpad?

  In OSX, is it possible to navigate the menu bar without using the mouse (such as the arrow keys)? I'm looking for something similar to how Windows does this – pressing Alt allows the arrow keys to navigate the menu bar, pressing Enter invokes the menu item. This is more ergonomic as my hands don't have to leave the keyboard to invoke menu items. I'm aware of the various keyboard shortcuts, but unfortunately not all menu items have them. Followup: I discovered Full Keyboard Access which solves half the problem. With Full Keyboard Access set to All Controls, is there a key that activates the menu bar?

• Synergy on Mac OS X 10.7

  Unfortunately, I can't seem to get Synergy to work between two Mac clients both using 10.7. One is an older 21" iMac and the other is a new 2011 Macbook Air. Here's my synergy.conf, symlinked to my home directory as ~/.synergy.conf section: screens foo: bar: super = alt alt = super end section: links foo: right = bar bar: left = foo end That is, I thought the super = alt trick was mandatory in order to have alt work on Mac but unfortunately, nothing really works. Both the Command and Control keys do NOT work on bar but work fine on foo given that the keyboard is paired with that screen. The keyboard modifier keys are the same on both computers and the making the mouse go between screens works as well. I was wondering if anyone else had any success or problems running into this issue on 10.7 and was hoping there was a possible fix.

  After trying to clone my primary drive, which requires a reboot to proceed, BitLocker detected that the boot sector had changed and required the recovery keys. Not a good situation to be in on Sunday evening when it is your IT-department who hold the keys. After talking with the guys at IT, I have tree suspects on why BitLocker locked me out: The newly added, second hard drive in my machine. The changed boot-order in BIOS. The changes True Image did in order to do its things on boot. As an end-user, I should never have to end up in situations like these without any warning. I would like to know what really happened, so I can inform Acronis on how they can improve their product to avoid this situation in the future.

  I have strange problem with my almost new laptop. Aftear I leave it turned on for some hours and back to use it, it was printing something like ^[[2~ on the screen and I cannot stop it. After rebooting it did not show any activity. After few hours I managed to turn it on by hiting random keys at keyboard. I starts that way but I have to use external keyboard to type anything. When I randomly stroke the keys when is turned on, it sometimes print that unrecognised characters. It works the same way at linux and windows (ubuntu, windows 7). What can be the reason it started to work so strange and is there anyway to fix it without sending it to warranty and waiting few weeks? :/ I dont remember to make it wet, but they may be something like cigaretes ashes in it, I could not remember...

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? • Das keyboard boot camp

  So I recently started using a Das keyboard ultimate with my mac and after installing the key re-mapping, it basically works ok. I have a couple of issues with the set up involving boot camp. When I start up the computer, which key maps to option in order to let me pick which operating system to boot into? I think the bios is detecting the keys along the bottom as alt or something like that and I am not sure what to do here. In windows 7, the " and @ keys are switched. • Problems with merge replication

  Hi, We are developing a multi-user desktop application with users located in different countries. The platform is - .net 3.5, SQL Server 2008, WinForms. Now, my client has used the help of a DBA who has implemented merge replication. To facilitate replication, we made all our primary keys as GUID. Now, we are facing these issues with replication - subscribers expiration sometimes stops replication and we have found no clean way to re-add every change to db schema requires to poll the whole data all over again! This seems to be strange, what could be the problem here? Also, sometimes we have duplicate keys, and that too stops replication I am sure these issues can be resolved. Maybe, we have not gone the right way to implement. Can you suggest how to go about implementing. Or, is the above information enough to diagnose the problem?

• postfix, TLS and rapidssl - "verify error:num=19:unable to get local issuer certificate"

  I have been googeling for days! I have a cert from rapidssl. I read up that the problem with num=20, is that indicates it doesn't know the issuer, or doesn't know the ROOT Cert, right? I run this command: openssl s_client -showcerts -connect smtp.server.com:465 I get this error: verify error:num=19:self signed certificate in certificate chain Here is what i have in my postfix main.cf, and what i have done: smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.rsa.key (this is the private key) smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.PUBLIC.key (this is the public key given to me by rapidssl) smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/postfix/ssl/combo.csr.key This key has both the intermediate keys ON TOP, and the ROOT KEY on the bottom. Here is the Intermediate keys: https://knowledge.geotrust.com/library/VERISIGN/ALL_OTHER/geotrust%20ca/GT_QuickSSL_and_Premium_and_Trial_intermediate_bundle.pem and here is the root CERT: http://www.geotrust.com/resources/root_certificates/certificates/Equifax_Secure_Certificate_Authority.cer anyone know how to use rapidssl certs?

• How do I use an SSH public key from a remote machine?

  Setup The public keys are set up on a Macbook. I can do a passwordless push to github and a server (iMac) on the local network. The Problem I know the keys are partially setup correctly, because I everything works if I'm sitting at the Macbook. What doesn't work is when I SSH into the Macbook remotely and attempt to push to github or to the iMac server. I'm prompted to input my SSH key passphrase. What am I missing to enable pushing to github from the Macbook while logged in remotely from the iMac?

• IBM PS/2 Keyboard with OS X 10.6 and PS2->USB Converter

  Just got a new Mac Pro at work and as I can't stand the ZX Spectrum-esque 'dead flies' feel of the new Apple keyboards, I brought my trusty IBM SpaceSaver II to the office (with a USB/PS2 adapter) All seems generally to work ok - even the Trackpoint 'nipple' but periodically the modifier keys, notably the Ctrl and Windows keys seem to go into 'sticky' mode so that typing an 'S' brings up the save dialog, 'O' = open dialog etc. etc. Its generally fixed by switching windows and then returning back to the offending one, but this is really beginning to cheese me off. Can anyone suggest a fix?
