  • How to detect slow internet connections?

    Currently, most of the popular websites, like google, yahoo detect if the user connection speed is slow and then give a option to load basic version of the website instead of the high end one. What are the methods available to detect slow internet connections? P.S. I think this is achieved through javascript, so I will tag it as a javascript question? However, I am looking for answers oriented more towards PHP, if this is also server related.

  • Book recommendation for project architecture?

    I already have a solid knowledge of Object-oriented PHP as well as HTML/Javascript/MySQL plus a basis in Java. Now I would like to implement my projects in an efficient way, whether it is a web project in PHP or an Android application. My problem is once my code gets bigger I start messing error handling, with form validation etc, and I guess its because of my poor basis in software architecture. Thanks.

  • iOS dynamic object creation

    I've worked with Xcode and iOS on a few personal projects and have always used non-object-oriented designs for everything... just because I've been doing mostly learning/experimenting with things. Now I've been trying to implement some object oriented design into one game I've made previously. The idea is, I have a space ship that can shoot bullets. In the past I basically added the UIImageView to the storyboard and then connected it to the .h file and from there did things on it like move it around or whatever (using CGPointMake). The idea now is to make a method (and a whole other class soon) that will create a UIImageView programmatically, allocate it, add it to the superview etc... I've got this working so far, easy stuff, but the next part is a bit harder. Where do I store this local variable "bullet"? I've been saving it to an NSMutableArray and doing the following: (actually here are the methods that I have) -(void)movement { for (int i = 0; i < [array1 count]; i ++) { UIImageView *a = [array1 objectAtIndex:i]; a.center = CGPointMake(a.center.x + 2, a.center.y); if (a.center.x > 500) { [array1 removeObjectAtIndex:i]; [a removeFromSuperview]; } } } -(void)getBullet { UIImageView *bullet = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(ship.center.x + 20, ship.center.y - 2, 15, 3)]; bullet.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"bullet2.png"]; bullet.hidden = NO; [self.view addSubview:bullet]; [array1 addObject:bullet]; } (by the way, array1 is declared in the .h file) and theres a timer that controls the movement method timer = [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:0.5 target:self selector:@selector(movement) userInfo:nil repeats:YES]; first question is: what is the correct way of doing this? Storing a bullet for example until it is removed from the superview, should I store it another way? and another question is, when I remove a UIImageView from the superview, does that remove it from memory so its not using up system resources?   • Finding whether a point lies inside a rectangle or not

    The rectangle can be oriented in any way...need not be axis aligned. Now I want to find whether a point lies inside the rectangle or not. One method I could think of was to rotate the rectangle and point coordinates to make the rectangle axis aligned and then by simply testing the coordinates of point whether they lies within that of rectangle's or not. The above method requires rotation and hence floating point operations. Is there any other efficient way to do this??

Only one interface is implemented on the object and the other is implemented dynamically using an aspect-oriented approach.   • Manipulating values from database table with php

    I currently have 5 tables in MySQL database. Some of them share foreign keys and are interdependent of each other. I am displaying classes accordingly to their majors. Each class is taught during the fall, spring or all_year. In my database I have a table named semester which has an id, year, and semester fields. The semester field in particular is a tinyint that has three values 0, 1, 2. This signifies the fall, spring or all_year. When I display the query instead of having it show 0 or 1 or 2 can I have it show fall, spring etc? Extra: How can I add space to the end of each loop so the data doesn't look clustered?   • [Android] Is disabling landscape mode unforgivable?

    Our application could support landscape mode without any problem, but it is such a pain that we are thinking about forcing portrait mode. Question: Is it BAD? The main problem is that changing orientation generates random crashes on many screens. Avoiding those crashes would potentially allow us to spend more time on the core aspects of the app. Will the same crashes happen when users switch apps anyway? Also, are there landscape-oriented devices where our app will become useless?

We can read about jQuery at Wikipedia, The set of jQuery core features — DOM element selections, traversal and manipulation —, enabled by its selector engine (...), created a new "programming style", fusing algorithms and DOM-data-structures This question is similar to the "subquestion-3" of this question but not so generic. The focus here is about this new kind of "programming style"... So, the question: Is the "jQuery programming style in DOM context" a new paradign? Or it is more one example of reactive programming (not "cell-oriented" but "DOM-node oriented") or another one?
