• Custom built accounts package running on windows vista , printer selection box not now appearing

  This package has a printer function for documents which always brought up the printer selection box from which one picked the appropiate printer. Now recently,almost certainly as a result of windows updates, when I select PRINT nothing happens. The printer is working fine, and indeed a 'direct print' option to the default printer which is a matrix printer works fine, as it does not invoke the printer selection process. Does anyone know if there is a particular setting which might be causing this to happen. It works fine still on all previous windows versions XP etc, but will not work on Vista or later versions. Or is there a program code fix that anyone could suggest. Many thanks Liam

• Predictive vs Least Connection Load Balancing Techniques

  I have a windows based desktop application that communicates via TCP to the application servers. (windows 2003). No sticky sessions between client calls. We have exactly 2 servers to load balance and we are thinking to use a F5 hardware NLB. The application is a heavy load types, doing not much bussiness logic in the services but retrieving quite a big amount of data at most of the times. May be on an average 5000 to 10000 records at all times. Used mainly for storing and retirieving data and no special processing of data or calculations running on the server side. I am favouring 'predictive' considering my services take a while at times to return data and hence tracking the feedback would yield some better routing as in predictive. I am not sure if the given data is sufficient enough to suggest some ideas but considering these, what would be some suggestions\things to consider\best between Predictive and Least Connections ? • Internet cafe software for linux

  I have gotten a request to roll out a total of 8 internet cafe's in a large network. Budget is non-existent as it will all be done for a non-profit. I was planing to use Ubuntu and live-cds to minimize the amount of management required, but I can't seem to find any suitable internet cafe system that is Ubuntu based. The requirements are pretty basic: It needs to keep track of logged in time and log out users when their time it up. No billing will be done, it will just be used to ensure people can share the computers fairly. It should be possible to force logout from a central system. Users will be unskilled, so it has to have a GUI. What (preferably free, considering the shoe-string budget) software would you suggest to manage this?

I was recently attacked with JS:Illredir-S [Trj], I asked my hosting providers to clean it and they cleaned it and updated all passwords, but now after a week my site got infected again with JS:ScriptIP-inf [Trj]. Can anyone please suggest me how to secure my website properly ? Should I change my hosting provider ? I am fed up of these viruses again and again on my websites. • VPN Network intermittantly fails to provide internet: What could be possible causes

  We have a small office with our own VPN setup. We occasionally experience failures in our internet connection where we cannot access the internet. Most of the time the internet connection will resume by itself(without me doing anything) after a period of time(10 mins). Would you be able to suggest possible causes of the connection failure so I can then go and run some tests? Our network architecture is like so: A 'Billion' brand router that is connected to the internet via phone cable and then connected to our Cisco Switch A Cisco Switch/Bus which is connected to all our office nodes, our external harddrive and also to our router as stated above. All connections are via ethernet cable A series of work computers(nodes) connected via ethernet cable to the Cisco switch. Our ISP is TPG Australia We have a Virtual Private Network All the ethernet cables are about 3 years old Do you think that the causes of our intermittant connection problems could be due to the following: Data collisions in the ethernet cables Old/Faulty ethernet cables Our ISP has bad service Can you think of any other causes of the problem?

  I am developing an application on a Linux embedded board (runs Debian) e.g. Raspberry Pi, Beagle Board/Bone, or olimex. The boards works on an environment that the electricity is cut unexpectedly (it is far complicated to place PSU, etc.) and it would happen every day couple times. I wonder if the unexpected power cuts would cause crash/problem on the Linux Operation System? If it is something that I should worry, what would you suggest to prevent the damages on OS against the unexpected power cuts? PS. The application needs to writes some data to the storage medium (SD card), I think it would not be suitable to mount it as read-only.

• Use trackball to scroll, zoom, etc

  I've got a Logitech Marble Trackball (which is great, btw). By setting one of the extra buttons as a "middle" mouse button, when I click it, many apps (like browsers) will start "scrolling mode" so that moving the trackball will scroll up and down. Most of the time, this is sufficient, but I figure it would be way cooler if I could have several "modes" to do different things like zooming, panning, rotating (particularly in GIMP). Then when I hold CTRL, CTRL+SHIFT, or some such, it would enter a new mode, and the trackball would behave differently. I found a couple questions similar to this that suggest using AutoHotKey, but I haven't found an example script to do this, nor can I find out to track mouse movements within AHK. Any pointers? hotkey for scrollwheel remedy for a no scroll wheel trackball? Thanks!

• Ideas for campus Internet Login mechanism?

  Hello, I work at this university and I'm seeking an effective solution for an internet login mechanism. We have a leased-link at our campus, which is shared by both staff & students. All systems (desktops + laptops + handhelds) connect to the internal network via wifi and can then get onto the net. However, a local govt. regulation requires us to keep track of individual internet usage and hence we need a solution (pref. free / opensource) that'll enable us to implement some sort of an authentication mechanism once a user hooks onto the network. One requirement is that the software should be able to authenticate either against LDAP or some other custom user database (MySQL based) or both. Can anyone suggest any such software or mechanism? Most of our servers are Linux based... so something that runs off such a platform will be good. Thanks, m^e

  Here's a crude representation of what I've got at home: floor 2 INTERNETS ---- MODEM/ROUTER ---- MY COMPUTER | floor 1 WIFI REPEATER ---- stuff | floor 0 more stuff TELEVISION Now, as part of our sat tv subscription we can get an additional service if we connect our decoder (located by TELEVISION obviously) to the internet. What they suggest is buying a Netgear 3DHD WIRELESS HOME THEATER NETWORKING KIT holy shit isn't my bullshit-o-meter flying high right now from the general buzzwordyness of this thing. What does this thing actually do that our existing wireless-enabled routers don't do? What's the point of having a third wifi router in the same house, this time only for one television? If I do decide to plunge €99 for this, should I connect it to the wifi repeater (which does not provide AAA quality internet, at least for all gaming purposes) or to my modem/router (risking issues with low signal?).

• Migrating Roaming Profiles from one drive to another

  As the title suggests, how can I migrate roaming profiles located in one drive (starting to fill up already) to another? Current share is like this "SVR1\Shares\UserProfiles\%username%\ But of course, this is located in C:/Shares/UserProfiles/%username%/ What do I need to do? Do I simply copy/paste into the bigger(RAID1) drive and then repoint all the profile paths (using AD Users&Computers profile properties)? What if I can point this to a different file server all together? Best practices? tips? anything you guys can suggest. Thanks!

  I want to use google.com instead of google.com.hk as my default search engine in Chrome. I tried to use custom search engine, but they all break search suggestions, not even something like https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion} {google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats} {google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding} which include parameters like acceptedSuggestion that seems to imply seach suggestions being enabled. But no, search suggestions still don't work. In addition. some websites suggest editing Local State file under Chrome's setting folder. I already tried that, and it didn't work at all. So, is there any way to use google.com as default search engine without breaking search suggestions?

• Raw socket sendto() failure in OS X

  When I open a raw socket is OS X, construct my own udp packet (headers and data), and call sendto(), I get the error "Invalid Argument". Here is a sample program "rawudp.c" from the web site http://www.tenouk.com/Module43a.html that demonstrates this problem. The program (after adding string and stdlib #includes) runs under Fedora 10 but fails with "Invalid Argument" under OS X. Can anyone suggest why this fails in OS X? I have looked and looked and looked at the sendto() call, but all the parameters look good. I'm running the code as root, etc. Is there perhaps a kernel setting that prevents even uid 0 executables from sending packets through raw sockets in OS X Snow Leopard? Thanks.

  Hi, I am using Solr (1.4) AutoSuggest feature using termsComponent. Currently, if I type 'goo' means, Solr suggest words like 'google'. But I would like to receive suggestions like 'google, google alerts, ..' . ie, suggestions with single and multiple terms. Not sure, whether I need to use edgengrams for that. for eg, indexing google like 'go', 'oo', 'og', ... . But I think I don't need this, Since I don't want partial search. • Should I get a desktop PC if I will move abroad

  Hello, This is probably a bit of a personal opinion style question - should I buy a desktop or a laptop? Generally I would prefer a desktop, since it's generally cheaper for the same specs, but it's about 50% likely that I will have to move to Japan (from UK) for a couple of years in two years or so. I have never heard of anyone travelling with a desktop - is it even possible without getting it destroyed? If anyone have experience in this area, could you suggest me if It's better to choose a laptop just for this reason? I don't really care about mobility on daily basis that much as I already have a netbook. Thanks for all the help and sorry if it's a bit off topic.

• How do I objectively measure an application's load on a server

  All, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for resources to answer my question, and I realize that speculation about this kind of thing is highly subjective. I need help determining what class of server I should purchase to host a MS Silverlight application with a MSSQL server back-end on a Windows Server 2008 platform. It's an interactive program, so I can't simply generate a list of URLs to test against, and run it with 1000 simultaneous users. What tools are out there to help me determine what kind of load the application will put on a server at varying levels of concurrent users? Would you all suggest separating the SQL server form the web server, to better differentiate the generated load on the different parts of the stack?

• Good window management grid keyboard shortcuts on keyboards without a numeric keypad

  I like to use Winsplit Revolution to position open windows in a specific place on my screen in a grid-like fashion. One of the things I like about Winsplit Revolution is that the default keyboard shortcuts use the physical layout of the numeric keypad as a mnemonic for where each key positions a window (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + 7 positions window in top left hand corner because 7 is in top left hand corner and Ctrl + Alt + 3 positions window in bottom right hand corner because 3 is in bottom right hand corner). I am looking to get a laptop (Macbook Pro) whose keyboard does not feature a numeric keypad. Can anyone suggest a set of keyboard shortcuts on such a machine that provides a similar mnemonic to aid in remembering what each shortcut does, rather than a simple arbitrary assignment of shortcuts? To be clear, I am not interested in specific window management software, just suggestions for keyboard shortcuts that are easy to remember.

• Format (remove) HDD volume that is visible in Windows 7 Disk Management but not diskpart.exe

  I'm trying to get iRST working on a SSD I installed in my lenovo u410. As part of that process, I created a hibernation partition and was fiddling around with RAID/AHCI settings. I managed to make my computer unbootable. No sweat, I just restored it with Lenovo's 1 key system. Now, however, I can't do anything with that hybernation partition! I can see it: (It's the 7.81 GB partition). But when I try to delete it in Diskpart.exe to reclaim the space and try the formatting again I only see this: I can't do anything with the partition in Disk Management either. Right clicking only shows the 'help' option. Can anyone suggest a way to edit these partitions with windows or, at least, reccomend a program that might help me fix this? Note, I'd rather not delete the 16 GB OEM partition that I believe holds the backup for this computer.

• Substitute drivers for a 32 bit printer on a 64 bit OS

  I'm trying to use an old GCC Elite 12N B&W laser printer for printing schoolwork and other miscellany on 64 bit Windows 7. The only drivers available are 32 bit. As far as I know, it's not possible to use 32 bit drivers on a 64 bit OS, but is there some sort of generic Postscript driver I could substitute? If the drivers are, in fact, compatible, could someone suggest a way to modify the INF file so that Windows will recognize it? Thanks for your help!

• Creating windows links on Linux?

  I'm running a SAMBA file store for our Windows users, and I'd like to automatically generate windows LNK files linking to other network shares that the user needs access to. I've done quite a bit of googling and I can't find a way of creating windows links on Linux, or through Perl. I did find a perl module that looked promising in CPAN, but it will only run on Windows unfortunately. If it's not possible to create .LNK files, perhaps there is an alternative solution people can suggest to allow the users to click on a file in one SAMBA store to be linked to a different SAMBA share? • USB key to pass password in Centos 6

  I had a room mate that put a livecd in my desktop and looked around on my machine. I caught him in the act and threw him out. I haven't had a room mate for a while now and so as to avoid the livecd issue again I encrypted the hard drive, the machine is running centos 6.3. Is there anyway that I can avoid typing the password in each time if I have usb key in the machine to feed the password to the system? Additional question.   a few hours ago, I found a link to Kickass Torrent, which is blocked in my country, Italy and went for it. The link worked just fine but wasn't able to save anything. I renounced and continued normal navigation. I then noticed that everytime I try to access some pages, for instance google.com (but not Google.it) I receive a warning from Chrome that I'm being redirected through piratenpartji.nl Since I found a similar topic here on 'superuser' I tried what was proposed in the solution, namely shutting down adblock and trying again or trying Incognito mode. Nevertheless, no result. I performed a search with both Avira and Spybot SD but except for a couple cookies from other origin nothing came up. What do you suggest I do? • Reinstall after a Root Compromise?

  After reading this question on a server compromise, I started to wonder why people continue to seem to believe that they can recover a compromised system using detection/cleanup tools, or by just fixing the hole that was used to compromise the system. Given all the various root kit technologies and other things a hacker can do most experts suggest you should reinstall the operating system. I am hoping to get a better idea why more people don't just take off and nuke the system from orbit. Here are a couple points, that I would like to see addressed. Are there conditions where a format/reinstall would not clean the system? Under what types conditions do you think a system can be cleaned, and when must you do a full reinstall? What reasoning do you have against doing a full reinstall? If you choose not to reinstall, then what method do you use to be reasonably confident you have cleaned and prevented any further damage from happening again.
