  There are lots of articles and video lessons that describe how to create your unique user widget (graphical control) with WPF. There are tons of technical details what is behind the scene and I feel people enthusiasm with ability to customize widgets as never before. I remember those days when VCL library (Delphi) appeared and there was the same enthusiasm in VCL widgets area. Ability to create VCL controls was nearly the must when you was applying for a job as Delphi developer. This situation continued for several years till professional sophisticated 3'd party UI libraries appeared. Hardly you'll have to create your own VCL widget nowadays. Will WPF widgets enthusiasm die as VCL one?

  Hello, We need to import some orders file on magento enterprise. In our file, products contains customs Options. We tried to make an extension but we have some problems to import Customs options. The import of standard product is successful but not for the product with customs options. For customs option, missing "info_buyRequest" valu in database. The technical support of magento we responded "the import process currently can't handle importing products with custom options". Magento use custom options when ordering a product with customs options on website. What features do magento use to fill in the fields "info_buyRequest" and "Product_options" when ordering? Have you see a extension pack for import file order with product contains customs options? Thanks for your help.

  I'm a Director of Product Engineering for my company. My CEO has asked me to create a technology standards document, explaining things like the technology we use, our policy on adapting to new technology, and design standards like percent of code covered by unit tests. I've never had to do something like this, and I've spent a significant amount of time searching the web for examples, but I haven't found any at all. The closest I've found are documents describing technical specifications for an individual product. However, I'm trying to define this for the entire company. Can someone provide examples of how this document could be formatted/organized, and what the typical content would be? Thanks!

• From C# to JAVA

  Hi all, I don't know whether this is a valid question to ask here or not, but I made an attempt. I am basically a C# guy. But since the last 7 days I have been asked to work in java (J2SE 1.4) and I am working in that. and gradually I am finding interest in that. I want to learn more about it and since I am finding a lot of similarity between C# and Java(what ever I have gleaned + worked so far in those 7 days), I am planning to steer my career in that. But having spent for more than 2 years in C# and then moving to java, will it be a problem in future (say after 3/4 months) if I need to change my job.. I mean my most of the exp. lies in C# and just started JAVA. so how the technical panel will accept me if I need to change the platform? Thanks

• How exactly does a program convert everything to UTF-8 internally?

  does it use setlocale()? does it assume utf-8 for all input strings when in a UTF-8 locale? I understand what unicode is and how it is related to utf-8, but how does one "convert to it" internally with all their strings? How does it convert all input strings to UTF-8? Does it use a C library function? Does the current working locale have to be a UTF-8 locale? UPDATE: if specific technical details could be in your answer, that would be great as that is more along the lines of what I'm looking for. I already understand the reasons for using UTF-8 internally and why it makes dealing with multiple locales much simpler.

• How can I deploy a Perl/Python/Ruby script without installing an interpreter?

  I want to write a piece of software which is essentially a regex data scrubber. I am going to take a contact list in CSV and remove all non-word characters and such from the person's name. This project has Perl written all over it but my client base is largely non-technical and installing Perl on Windows would not be worth it for them. Any ideas on how I can use a Perl/Python/Ruby type language without all the headaches of getting the interpreter on their computer? Thought about web for a second but it would not work for business reasons.

  We are looking into the possibility of upgrading to Team Foundation Server 2008 for our development team. One of our primary reasons is some of the deployment capabilities surrounding BizTalk 2009, but I am curious what other benefits there are for other projects outside of BizTalk. Some of our interests so far are moving to a one click build and deploy process, the addition of unit tests, and continuous integration. Some definite steps forward for the company I work for. What other benefits or information should I look at as I pitch this to upper management? I am looking for technical reasons, money is a not really a concern for this discussion.

  Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this. This is an optional list of reader-names allowed to read the document. When a reader list is used, protected documents are only viewable by listed users." I am not talking about "undo". But rather a way that would let me keep track or be able to retrieve a section of my code that I deleted but now want it back. Is there such a way. If its not, what are the alternatives to deal with this problem? • Modifying an image with OpenGL ?

  I have a device to acquire XRay images. Due to some technical constrains, the detector is made of heterogeneous pixel size and multiple tilted and partially overlapping tiles. The image is thus distorted. The detector geometry is known precisely. I need a function converting these distorted images into a flat image with homogeneous pixel size. I have already done this by CPU, but I would like to give a try with OpenGL to use the GPU in a portable way. I have no experience with OpenGL programming, and most of the information I could find on the web was useless for this use. How should I proceed ? How do I do this ? Image size are 560x860 pixels and we have batches of 720 images to process. I'm on Ubuntu.

  I have a ~300.000 row table; which includes technical terms; queried using PHP and MySQL + FULLTEXT indexes. But when I searching a wrong typed term; for example "hyperpext"; naturally giving no results. I need to "compansate" little writing errors and getting nearest record from database. How I can accomplish such feaure? I know (actually, learned today) about Levenshtein distance, Soundex and Metaphone algorithms but currently not having a solid idea to implement this to querying against database. Best regards.   I have this code on my JSP page <form action="LoginServlet" method="get"> <input type="text" name="username" /> <input type="text" name="password" /> <input type="submit" value="Submit" /> </form> and when I press Submit I get: The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. and LoginServlet.doGet method doesn't get called. But then when I press Enter again (in address bar) my doGet method gets called. What is wrong? I am using JEE eclipse and Tomcat

• Are self-described / auto-descriptive services loosely or tightly coupled in a SOA architecture ?

  I consider a self-described / auto-descriptive service as a good thing in a SOA architecture, since (almost) everything you know to call the service is present in the service contract (such a WSDL). Sample of a non self-described service for me is Facebook Query Language (FQL http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/FQL), or any web service exchanging XML flow in a one String parameter for then parsing XML and performing treatments. Last ones seem further more technically decoupled, since technically you can switch implementations without technical impact on the caller, handling compatibility between implementations/versions at a business level. On the other side, having no strong interface (diluted into the service and its version), make the service tightly coupled to the existing implementation (more difficulty to interchange the service and to ensure perfect compatibility). • How to enforce a site-wide license?

  We have a small .Net program that we sell with individual licenses. The individual licenses are enforced by registering a key file that is generated using information from the machine used to install the program (MAC address, etc.) Now, we have a customer request for a site-wide license, such that they can deploy to as many machines on their site as possible. From the technical POV I'm not sure what are the usual approaches for this; our old approach won't work since we can't map the license to any machine-specific information. Any suggestions? A few more details: the program is a client-side program that includes an Office Add-In the machines to be installed on may or may not have internet access we aren't restricted to .Net-only approaches, I'm just looking for a general idea of how this sort of thing is usually handled

• How do I create Ntlm Type 1 and Type 3 messages in .Net

  I need to create Type 1 message and Type 3 message for NTLM handshaking. Is there any .Net API for this? Essentially, the application is WPF based, but Socket is used in order to stream data from the server. Use of socket is a technical requirement, but the problem is when user needs to connect to the server using a proxy server. Further, if the proxy authorization is based on Ntlm, the client application needs to create Type 1 and Type 3 messages in order to handshake with the proxy server. My question is: Is there any API already available in .NET libraries that can be consumed in order to create these different types of NTLM messages? Any help or alternatives will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  Is there a technical reason why IOS requires the device's domain-name to be set (via ip domain-name) before an SSH key can be generated? Is the domain-name used in any way in the generation of the key? Is there any way to force the generation of a key before the domain name is set? UPDATE: Myself (before I posted this question) and others in your answer seem to think it may be used as either a salt or a source of entropy for the key. Wouldn't the domain-name be very predictable? This doesn't seem like a suitable source of entropy.

• How to convince a colleague that code duplication is bad?

  A colleague of mine was implementing a new feature in a project we work on together and he did it by taking a file containing the implementation of a similar feature from the same project, creating a copy of it renaming all the global declarations and slightly modifying the implementation. So we ended up with two large files that are almost identical apart from renaming. I tried to explain that it makes our project more difficult to maintain but he doesn't want to change anything saying that it is easier for him to program in such way and that there is no reason to fix the code if it "ain't broke". How can I convince him that such code duplication is a bad thing? It is related to this questions, but I am more interested in the answers targeted to a technical person (another programmer), for example a reference to an authoritative source like a book would be great. I have already tried simple arguments and haven't succeeded.
