• Caspol, VMs, Mapped Drives, VS2010

  Hi I have a VM (Win7 32 bit) with VS2010 installed. I have a drive mapped into it from the host machine (VM 64 bit), when I have some of my VS2010 projects and to where I am building them. One of my projects is looking to load an assembly. If I copy that assembly to a local drive, the program ruins fine. If I leave it on the mapped drive, then I get an error Exception is: FileLoadException - Could not load file or assembly 'file:///Z:\BusinessTier\bin\Debug\BusinessTier.dll I am unsure whether or not I need to run Caspol. There is another post on SO which pointed me to a post which indicated that VS2008 SP1+ removed the need for caspol wrt network drives, but I wondered if I still needed to because I am in a VM. I have tried running the following on the host machine in an attempt to give permissions to VS inside the VM, but to no avail C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30128>caspol -m -ag 1.2 -url file://g:\* FullTrust where g:* is the drive being mapped into the VM (as drive z:) What am I missing (apart from understanding!) • What's wrong with Lotus Notes / Lotus Domino

  I have a client who is using Lotus Domino for their web application/server platform. The client has two "web developers" who are more comfortable with Lotus Domino than more mainstream tools and technologies and are not enthusiastic about making a switch. I have been asked to provide an assessment of why it may be prudent to migrate to a different web application platform. I would be particularly interested in understanding deficiencies related to the platform as I have very little knowledge of Domino but am very familiar with other platforms. In addition to the fact that Apache has over 70% of web server market, IIS over 21%, and Lotus almost 0%, what other reasons would you give for moving away from this platform? • Microsoft Reporting DLL's in medium trust environment

  My host Rackspace Cloud Sites have a modified Medium Trust environment. One of our legacy applications which we are moving onto the server uses the following DLL's: Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common.dll Microsoft.ReportViewer.ProcessingObjectModel.dll Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll Microsoft.ReportViewer.WinForms.dll My understanding is that these DLL's work in a medium trust environment if deployed to the GAC. Sadly Rackspace will not do this for me. What options do I have apart from moving to a different plan? Deploying the DLL's to the bin does not work as the permissions are incorrect. Could I decompile the DLL's and make them work in a medium trust environment?

• Problem -- My Android "Hello World" App Won't Say 'Hello"

  Hello, I hope that I have come to the right post for a beginner’s question abut Android programming. If not, please feel free to direct me to a better forum. I created a hello world application, and the system generated most of the Android language below. When running the app without the system.out statement, there is no “hello” in the emulator. Then, using the Eclipse tutorial, I read that I can add the system.out.println statement to main. Again the app runs, but there is no output. A few years later, I realized Fred Brooks won the Turing award. Some years after that, after a few large development projects, I started understanding what he was talking about. Are there any other books about software development on a meta/philosophical level—not in the sense of design patterns, templates, or even lisp macros—but at a level where ideas are expressed without code?

• Bing Maps - how to link to a push pin from a link outside the map

  I have a Virtual Earth Maps (Bing Maps??) to which I have added a set of pushpins. Each pushpin is labelled 1 to n. In addition to adding pushpins to the map, I also add text to the web-page that contains the description to each pushpin. I would like to add a link to the text outside the map, that when clicked will open the balloon associated with the corresponding pushpin. How do I open the balloon associated with a pushpin, through a link that exists outside the map? To get a better understanding, look at my map: link. When you click load, PushPins are added to the map. I would like to have a link from the list on the right of the map, that opens the corresponding PushPin. Thanks in advance!

• Sending persisted JDO instances over GWT-RPC

  I've just started learning Google Web Toolkit and finished writing the Stock Watcher tutorial app. Is my thinking correct that if one wants to persist a business object (like a Stock) using JDO and send it back and forth to/from the client over RPC then one has to create two separate classes for that object: One with the JDO annotations for persisting it on the server and another which is serialisable and used over RPC? I notice the Stock Watcher has separate classes and I can theorise why: Otherwise the gwt compiler would try to generate javascript for everything the persisted class referenced like JDO and com.google.blah.users.User, etc Also there may be logic on the server-side class which doesn't apply to the client and vice-versa. I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. I don't want to have to create two versions of all my business object classes which I want to use over RPC if I don't have to.

  Hello This may be a 'Python Web Programming 101' question, but I'm confused about some code in the aeoid project (http://github.com/Arachnid/aeoid). here's the code: _current_user = None def get_current_user(): """Returns the currently logged in user, or None if no user is logged in.""" global _current_user if not _current_user and 'aeoid.user' in os.environ: _current_user = User(None, _from_model_key=os.environ['aeoid.user']) return _current_user But my understanding was that global variables were, ehm, global! And so different requests from different users could (potentially) access and update the same value, hence the need for sessions, in order to store per-user, non-global variables. So, in the code above, what prevents one request from believing the current user is the user set by another request? Sorry if this is basic, it's just not how i thought things worked. Thanks

  I am trying to understand the relation between TCP/IP and HTTP timeout values. Are these two timeout values different or same? Most Web servers allow users to set the HTTP Keep Alive timeout value through some configuration. How is this value used by the Web servers? is this value just set on the underlying TCP/IP socket i.e is the HTTP Keep Alive timeout and TCP/IP Keep Alive Timeout same? or are they treated differently? My understanding is (maybe incorrect): The Web server uses the default timeout on the underlying TCP socket (i.e. indefinite) and creates Worker thread that counts down the specified HTTP timeout interval. When the Worker thread hits zero, it closes the connection.

• GetAllUsers - MVC

  I’m using the Membership Provider and would like to display a list of all the users and their First Name, Last Name etc using the GetAllUsers function. I'm having trouble understanding how to implement this function in MVC. Has anyone implemented this in MVC or is there an easier way to list all the users in my application? Any help or advise would be really helpful. • Having trouble with binding

  I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding the binding in Flex. I'm using Cairngorm framework. I have the following component with code like: [Bindable] var _model:LalModelLocator = LalModelLocator.getInstance(); .... <s:DataGroup dataProvider="{_model.friendsSearchResults}" includeIn="find" itemRenderer="com.lal.renderers.SingleFriendDisplayRenderer"> <s:layout> <s:TileLayout orientation="columns" requestedColumnCount="2" /> </s:layout> </s:DataGroup> in the model locator: [Bindable] public var friendsSearchResults:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(); Inside the item renderer there is a button that calls a command and inside the command results there is a line like this: model.friendsSearchResults = friendsSearchResults; Putting break points and stepping through the code I confirmed that this like gets called and the friendsSearchResults gets updated. To my understanding if I update a bindable variable it should automatically re-render the s:DataGroup which has a dataProvider of that variable.

• 503 (Server Unavailable) WebException when loading local XHTML file in Visual C# 2008

  Hello! So I'm currently working on an ePub reader application, and I've been reading through a bunch of regular XML files just fine with System.Xml and XmlDocument: XmlDocument xmldoc = new XmlDocument(); xmldoc.Load(Path.Combine(Directory.GetCurrentDirectory(), "META-INF/container.xml")); XmlNodeList xnl = xmldoc.GetElementsByTagName("rootfile"); However, now I'm trying to open the XHTML files that contain the actual book text, and they're XHTML files. Now I don't really know the difference between the two, but I'm getting the following error with this code (in the same document, using the same XmlDocument and XmlNodeList variable) xmldoc.Load(Path.Combine(Directory.GetCurrentDirectory(), "OEBPS/part1.xhtml")); "WebException was unhandled: The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable" It's a local document, so I'm not understanding why it's giving this error? • Proper way of deleting records with Codeigniter

  I came across another Stackoverflow post regarding Get vs Post and it made me think. With CI, my URL for deleting a record is http://domain.com/item/delete/100, which deletes record id 100 from my DB. The record_id is pulled via $this->uri->segment. In my model I do have a where clause that checks that the user is indeed the owner of that record. A user_id is stored in a session inside the DB. Is that good enough? My understanding is, POST should be used for one time modification for data and GET is for retrieving regards (e.g. viewing an item or permalink).

• Reverse engineering to get answers

  So I've spent the last few days looking for a way to create a simple image drawing app with wxPython, and I think the key to doing just that is understanding how to use Device Contexts. The problem is that the wxPython demo program doesn't demonstrate DCs, and the docs for both wxPython and wxWidgets don't explain as much as I'd like to know so I've decided to try and 'reverse engineer' an existing app to see how its done. The first problem I have is that I don't know of any drawing apps written in wxPython (or any written in Python for that matter o.o), and the second is I don't know how I'd go about doing it. Am I right in saying that I'm going to need a copy of an application's Python source and something like Winpdb? What do professional programmers do when they find themselves in a situation like mine, needing answers that the docs don't provide?

So because the page's controls' events run between the page's load and prerender events, is it true that whatever the begin task handler (handler for BeginAsync below) produces, it can't be used in the controls' events? So for example, if the handler gets data from a database, the data can't be used in any of the controls' postback events? Would you bind data to a data control after prerender? • Type of object returned by an input from a web page

  I'm attempting to upload a file into a jsp and then use the file in some other code. My problem is that it comes into the servlet as an Object via the request.getAttribute() call so I don't know what to cast it to. I have this code so far to try and test what it is but I'm getting a NullPointerException. PrintWriter out = response.getWriter(); out.println(request.getAttribute("file1").getClass()); Is my understanding of whats going on flawed or am I just coding it up wrong?

• Assignment in python for loop possible?

  I have a dictionary d (and a seperate sorted list of keys, keys). I wanted the loop to only process entries where the value is False - so i tried the following: for key in keys and not d[key]: #do foo I suppose my understanding of python sytax is not what i thought it was - because the assignment doesnt suppose to have happened above, and a i get an instanciation error. The below works of course, but I'd really like to be able to use something like the code above.. possible? for key in keys: if d[key]: continue #foo time! Thanks!

• Protected Members of Other Instances in Scala

  I just ran into a difficulty while learning Scala. I have an inheritance hierarchy that is essentially equivalent to this: class A { protected def myMethod() = println("myMethod() from A") } class B extends A { def invokeMyMethod(a: A) = a.myMethod() } But trying to compile this sample, I get the error "test.scala:7: error: method myMethod cannot be accessed in A". Coming from Java, my understanding is that protected members should be accessible at any point from a derived class, and nowhere have I seen anything that tells me that protected members in Scala are limited by instance. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

  I know implementing database is a huge topic, but I want to have a basic understanding of how database systems work (e.g. memory management, binary tree, transaction, sql parsing, multi-threading, partitions, etc) by investigating the source code of the database. Since there are a few already proven very robust open source databases like mysql, sqlite and so on. However, the code are very complicated and I have no clue where to start. Also I find that the old school database textbooks are only explaining the theory, not the implementation details. Can anyone suggest how I should get started and if there are any books that emphasis on the technology and techniques of building dbms used in modern database industry?

From my perspective, it should just try to pull down hibernate w/o inserting the groupId, but maybe i'm not understanding how i'm supposed to run this command?

  'I've interned at a company that does a lot of mainframe work. Most of my mainframe experience has been using Java and Unix System Services. I've had some experience with the ISPF interface and C but none with assembler. I’m graduating shortly and will be taking an independent study my last semester. I’d like to stick with the mainframe and was wondering what resources could teach me mainframe assembler? Note I don’t have experience writing assembler for any platform but do understand binary, hex, and have a theoretical understanding of registers.

  Hi, i looking for opinion from you all. I have a web application that need to records data into another web application database. I not prefer to use http request GET on 2nd application because of latency issue. I looking for fast way to save records on 2nd application quickly, i came across the idea of "fire and forget" , will JMX suit for this scenario? from my understanding jmx will gurantee message delivery. Let say i need to call at least 1000 random requests per seconds to 2nd application should i use jmx? http request? or xmpp instead?

• Integrate Jasper in Rails 3

  I'm trying to integrate a rails 3 app with jasper following this wiki: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/HowtoIntegrateJasperReports But it seems that a lot of information isn't updated so it's been very hard to make it work by myself. I've also read a topic at ruby-forum: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/139453 with some details explained but still couldn't make it work. My first problem is related with the render_to_string method: When the controller method runs I receive a "Template is missing" error: this is the method: def report @customers = Customer.all send_doc(render_to_string(:template => report_customers_path, :layout => false), '/pdfs', 'report.jasper', "customers", 'pdf') end Although this seems simple I'm not understanding why is this happening. Doesn't render_to_string with layout = false suposed to get me the string result of that action? I also tried :action instead of :template, but it does the same. If anybody with some expertise with this integration could help... Thanks in advance, André

• Covariance and Contravariance on the same type argument

  The C# spec states that an argument type cannot be both covariant and contravariant at the same time. This is apparent when creating a covariant or contravariant interface you decorate your type parameters with "out" or "in" respectively. There is not option that allows both at the same time ("outin"). Is this limitation simply a language specific constraint or are there deeper, more fundamental reasons based in category theory that would make you not want your type to be both covariant and contravariant?
