• Suggest books/learning path for writing smartphone apps

  I have been writing a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript lately working on a website, and I would like to move on to 'proper' OOP with an eye to making smartphone apps. I would like to at least cover iPhone and BlackBerry, which means learning Objective C, Cocoa and Java, before learning the specifics of interacting with the devices themselves, such as native bluetooth/GPS/internet API/methods. I would appreciate pointers to books or resources that will get me from a procedural web developer to object oriented app-maker. Most of the reviews of books on Objective C and Java have been mixed. I am about to start working my way through Beginning Java Objects (APress) which I have borrowed from my brother, so even if it's not a good intro at least it was free!

• jConfirm and onbeforeunload

When I add jConfirm after "return" it works...for a second. it pops the warning and then the page refreshes and the dialog box goes away. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I've even tried setting a static value for the actionparam. But when I try to do a Systemout on the setParam1 method it only prints out null. Have I missed anything important?

• Headless gem: webkit_server: cannot connect to X server

  I've got some problems running capybara-webkit with the Headless gem, Xvfb and our ci server. We use this setup for automatic integration testing and javascript testing of our Ruby on Rails 3.2 app. During the tests it complains that webkit_server: cannot connect to X server But when I ps aux | grep Xvfb deploy 1602 0.0 0.1 61696 1912 pts/2 S+ Jul10 0:00 /usr/bin/Xvfb :99 -screen 0 1280x1024x24 -ac I see the Xvfb running. If I run the tests with --trace it also only shows the error log above and I can't debug the error. Any ideas how I could get some more information, or even a solution?

• JSF 2 Scriptmanager style functionality

  I need to be able to add some javascript to all ajax postback responses (PartialViewContext.isAjaxRequest == true) but I am not succeeding with any implementation I try. I have tried implementing a PhaseListener and adding my script using PartialResponseWriter.insert* to add eval blocks, as well as trying to add the script by creating a script element. (Results in CDATA cannot nest, or just invalid XML) I have tried decorating PartialViewContextFactory to override the PartialViewContext.processPartial and add the script after the wrapped instance has processed it... How should I go about adding sripts to an Ajax response? Something similar to what .NET has with Scriptmanager.registerClientScriptBlock preferably. Thank you

• User Interface functionality modelling languages?

  I am looking for a UI functionality modelling language (UML-alike "thing", but for user interfaces) that is already accepted and maybe has its design patterns and handles the problem better than state or activity diagram. (If there is no such thing I'm planning to develop that BTW :)) This question came to mind as a result of a discovery that UML and its diagrams fails at describing complicated UI functionality with event-driven flow of execution (ie. javascript/jQuery big projects) EDIT: I've been thinking of using BPMN but It was not created for this purpose. • Fake "user initiated" <audio> tag on iPad

  I know that Apple's docs say that an mp3 within an <audio tag on iPhone OS can't be played without user intervention (they cite bandwidth concerns, totally reasonable). However, has anyone succeeded in faking a user action to play the audio? Perhaps faking events to off screen native audio controls with JavaScript? I'm using jPlayer right now which works great on desktop Safari, but is silent on my iPad. I'm prototyping a touch interface using WebKit on the iPad, and audio is an integral part of the experience, so yes, I do have a good reason to want to override this convention. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

• Is there an ftp plugin for gedit that will let me work locally?

  I'm trying to switch from a windows environment to Linux. I'm primarily PHP developer, but I do know quite a bit about other languages such as CSS, XHTML and Javascript. I need a way of editing my files locally because I work in a git repository and need to commit my saves. On windows I used Aptana and PDT. I'd save my files, upload via Aptana, then commit my work with git. I need to get a work flow going on my Linux machine now. If you know a better way to do this let me know, however my real question is, is there a plugin that allows gedit to upload files instead of working remotely?

  Well, I have a really small problem. How can I access an ASP.NET Drop down list from jquery? I tried to use "CssClass" property of the drop down list to assign a CSS class and then accessing that list using that class, but later I found out that the class changes when an element is selected, so my initial class replaced by a new class. I also cannot use the "ClientID" property because the part of code that access that list is not inside the page, but in a separate javascript file. So how can I access it ?

• Jquery Widget Performance

  I am working on an interface which involves ALOT of javascript. There is a calendar and blocks drawn on the calendar. The calendar is a jQuery widget, which works beautifully. The blocks drawn on top are also jQuery widgets. While it works - I am wondering, every time I create another block, is the widget fully duplicating, or is it referencing the widget? If I end up with 200 blocks on the screen, do I have 200 copies of the widget? Because if so i'm sure this will impact the performance quite heavily. Also it would determine whether I have functions inside the widget, or have them external to the widget looking in if that makes sense. Just putting some feelers out there for thoughts. I couldn't find anything by searching online.

• jQuery fading in an element - not working exactly as i want it to...

  Anybody see what's wrong? Doesn't seem to do anything. If i replace $(this, '.inner').stop(true, false).fadeIn(250); with $(.fadeInOnHover .inner').stop(true, false).fadeIn(250); then all the .inner elements on the page will fade in (which isn't really what i want, as i have ~10 of them). I know it's possible to achieve what i want to do, but i don't know how in this case. • Appcelerator Vs. MonoTouch - Which one is best for a .NET developer ?

  Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences.   part of the specification of this desktop application is to have a mini browser built in, so that you can enter URL, and navigate the site as you would on a normal browser. Access to the browser page's DOM is required, should let me programmatically change the rendering view of a page, should be cross-platform, renders javascript JDIC seems outdated and I've heard Mozswing doesn't run on Mac.... Jxbrowser license costs a grand and up. Is Java the wrong platform to be creating such app? Are there any other solutions out there for building an application like this ? Thank you.

• Using Java server-side with PHP-generated front-end

  Hi!  Does anyone have a real-world experience in building such a project? I'd like to move away questions about "is it good idea or not", but focus on possible solutions. I see one simple way - HTTP GET/POST + xml/json - and one more elegant - AJAX/DWR. As for the first one - I understand that it is possible, but needs quite a lot coding. As for second way - is it possible to use Java DWR engine with PHP front-end? Is DWR language-independent for client side (as it uses just JavaScript)?  Would it be a problem, that client page was generated by one web server (for example, apache+php) and served on server-side by another (for example, tomcat)? I suspect, that Tomcat will complain about sessions. Can this problem be fixed with allowing cross-domain AJAX? Thank you in advance. Denis.

  Hi I've been fighting these wireless drivers for a few days and just recently i noticed that the model the Wireless controller appears in lspci is different sometimes. • Auto deployment of PHP applications

  My team currently has a development web/database server and a live deployment web server and a live database server. We use SVN with the repository stored on the development server but the problem is our deployment process. Currently when we need to deploy an update to the live application we simply use SFTP to transfer from the repository to the live web server and then amend the database on the live server to reflect the development database. This is a really slow process as we also minify all javascript and CSS files. I have used Capistrano for Ruby and Cruise Control for java but I have never used anything for PHP. I'd rather not have to build our own if something already existed. Does anyone know of anything?

• Servlet Session - switch from URL Rewriting to Cookie

  Situation: I have a "dumb" Javascript frontend that can contact some kind of SSO middleware (MW). The MW can obtain sessions by issuing requests that contain authentication credentials (username, password). I.e. the session will be created for a certain user. My frontend needs to "restart" the session to gain the user's permissions to the target system. For that i need a valid session cookie. The target system is not under my control (could be a more or less public WFS, WMS, etc.), so i cannot add any SSO mechanism to it. Question: Is it possible to "steal" a Session forging a request which URL contains a valid session ID in the jsessionid parameter? Goal : Issue such a request to a Servlet and make it respond with a Set-Cookie header that contains the same id. That way the frontend joins the session and may do whatever the user, which was used to create the session, is able to do.

  We are creating a modular Web Site Project and all the UI is based on simple html pages with javascript widgets. These widgets obtain the data from a WCF class located in the app_code folder. Each widget has 3 files [ js, css , cs] and an image directory: , and we want all these files to be located under the same directory, say: /widgets/mywidget/ The problem is that the .cs file needs to be in the app_code folder to be compiled dynamically and that would break our widget modularity forcing the installator to distribute the widget code in two places. One of the options is use compiled assemblies instead of .cs files and use Assembly.Load() or smthg similar to load them when needed. What other options do you see?

  Hi, I have the following scenario for an MVC 2 website. The user checks a radio. I make a jQuery GET to retrieve some html (partial view + view model). The view-model is annotated with validation attributes. I need client-side validation for the new html's inputs. I tried placing the following line in the partial view: <% Html.EnableClientValidation(); % I was naive. Also for the obtained html I use jQuery's .html to populate my placeholder, which also would execute the javascript. Not that there is any. Is is possible to update the page's validation logic and metadata after the ajax call ? Any ideas (beside remote client side validation) ? Thanks in advance.

• Ajax based progress bar

  I am developing a progress bar using Ajax. My client side code is working fine, but I have issue at server side. I am using C based CGI. if(i == inc && pb_inc<=100) { fptr = fopen("progress_bar.txt", "w"); fprintf(fptr,"%d", j); fclose(fptr); pb_inc++; } basically I am increasing progress bar after certain number of bytes. What I see here is that the CGI doesn't let display any data to text file until it has sent all the data to file one by one. i have referred to http://www.redips.net/javascript/ajax-progress-bar/ Any idea whats happening here?
