  • String (dd-MM-yyyy HH:mm) to Date (yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm) | Java

    - by Panther24
I have a string in "dd-MM-yyyy HH:mm" and need to convert it to a date object in the format "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm". Below is the code I'm using to convert oldScheduledDate = "16-05-2011 02:00:00"; DateFormat formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss"); Date oldDate = (Date)formatter.parse(oldScheduledDate); Now when I print oldDate, i get Sat Nov 01 02:00:00 GMT 21, which is completely wrong, what am I doing wrong here?

  • Spring Framework 3.0.5 MVC Issue

    - by user578923
I know that this may be absolutely dumb but for the life of me I cannot figure out why I'm getting these errors in my Spring Project, it is basically from the MVC tutorial with a few modifications. This is the error I get when running my tomcat server. `Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/springframework/web/servlet/mvc/SimpleFormController at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:634) at java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(SecureClassLoader.java:142) at java.net.URLClassLoader.defineClass(URLClassLoader.java:277) at java.net.URLClassLoader.access$000(URLClassLoader.java:73) at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:212) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:205) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:321) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:294) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266) at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1581) at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1511) at org.springframework.util.ClassUtils.forName(ClassUtils.java:257) at org.springframework.beans.factory.support.AbstractBeanDefinition.resolveBeanClass(AbstractBeanDefinition.java:408) at org.springframework.beans.factory.support.AbstractBeanFactory.doResolveBeanClass(AbstractBeanFactory.java:1271) at org.springframework.beans.factory.support.AbstractBeanFactory.resolveBeanClass(AbstractBeanFactory.java:1242) ... 54 more Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.SimpleFormController at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:217) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:205) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:321) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:294) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266) ... 71 more` I just cannot figure out the issue with my classpath...I would appreciate any help. • Is J2EE/EJBs a dying trend?

    - by Taranfx
I might be wrong on this, but I no longer see heavy Business and Web services being hosted using J2ee technologies (Especially EJBs). Having known the power and scalability of J2ee applications, what is keeping developers/decision makers to restrict themselves to Core Java (POJOs) or even other web technologies like PHP, python. Is it the development time? Is it the Ease of configuration? (I feel this should not be a strong reason with Java EE 6, things are simplified) Of course scripting languages are faster to develop, we cannot ignore the fact that they are inherently not-as-scalable as Java Applications are (using App servers)

  • How are java.lang.Object's protected methods protected from subclasses?

    - by Adrian Lang
The keyword protected grants access to classes in the same package and subclasses (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/javaOO/accesscontrol.html). Now, every class has java.lang.Object as superclass (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/Object.html). Hence I conclude that every class may access java.lang.Object's methods even if they are protected. Take a look at the following example: public class Testclass { public Object getOne() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return this.clone(); } public Object getTwo() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return ((Object) this).clone(); } } While getOne() compiles fine, getTwo() gives Testclass.java:6: clone() has protected access in java.lang.Object return ((Object) this).clone(); I neither understand why getTwo() doesn't compile nor what's the difference (regarding the access of java.lang.Objects members) with getOne().

  • Besides EAR and EJB, what do I get from a J2EE app server that I don't get in a servlet container li

    - by dacracot
We use Tomcat to host our WAR based applications. We are servlet container compliant J2EE applications with the exception of org.apache.catalina.authenticator.SingleSignOn. We are being asked to move to a commercial J2EE application server. The first downside to changing that I see is the cost. No matter what the charges for the application server, Tomcat is free. Second is the complexity. We don't use either EJB nor EAR features (of course not, we can't), and have not missed them. What then are the benefits I'm not seeing? What are the drawbacks that I haven't mentioned? Mentioned were... JTA - Java Transaction API - We control transaction via database stored procedures. JPA - Java Persistence API - We use JDBC and again stored procedures to persist. JMS - Java Message Service - We use XML over HTTP for messaging. This is good, please more!

  • Java newbie problem: classes of the same package accessing one another?

    - by HH
    Test.java and SetWord.java belong to the package tools. Test.java needs to access SetWord but an odd error 'cannot find' SetWord appear. The package limits the visibility, it works without 'package tools;' lines. How can I acess the SetWords with Test in the same pkg? In general, how can classes access one another in the same pkg? Test.java package tools; import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class Test{ public static void main(String[] args) { //IT CANNOT FIND SetWords despite the same folder, why? SetWord sw=new SetWord(); System.out.println(st.set("HELLO)"); } } SetWord.java package tools; import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class SetWord{ public SetWord(){} public String set(String s) { return s.trim().toLowerCase(); } }

  • Accessing the next 3 element values in a Map knowing the key.

    - by Rachel
I have java.util.LinkedHashMap with Integer as Key and Character as Value. I know the key of the element i want to access. In addition to the element value for the key, i also want to retrieve the next 3 element values so that i can append all the 4 element values and form a string with 4 chars. I am asking for something like how we will do in a java.util.List. Is this feasible by any means in a Map/ordered map? Please suggest any other data structure that can help me achieve this. I am using Java 6.

  • Has "Killer Game Programming in Java" by Andrew Davison been rendered useless? What new tutorial should I follow? [duplicate]

    - by BDillan
This question already has an answer here: Killer Game Programming [Java 3D] outdated? 5 answers Its pathetic how it was created in 2005 not so long ago when the Java 3D 1.31 API was released. Now after downloading the source code off the books website and implementing it onto my work-space it cant run. (The 3D Shooter Ch. 23) I downloaded Java 3D 1.5 API, installed it- went back to my source code and javax.media ect.., and EVERY imported class within the game simply couldn't be resolved... they are all outdated.. Please do not say how its meant for a positive curvature in your game development skills. No ~ I got the book to understand how to code 3D textures/particle systems/games. Without seeing results how can I learn? If there is still hope for this book please tell me. Otherwise what other books match this one in Game Programming? This one was very well organized, documented and long. I am not looking for a 3D game prog. book on Java. Rather one that has the same reputation as this one but is a bit newer..

  • How to ...set up new Java environment - largely interfaces...

    - by Chris Kimpton
Hi, Looks like I need to setup a new Java environment for some interfaces we need to build. Say our system is X and we need to interfaces to systems A, B and C. Then we will be writing interfaces X-A, X-B, X-C. Our system has a bus within it, so the publishing on our side will be to the bus and the interface processes will be taking from the bus and mapping to the destination system. Its for a vendor based system - so most of the core code we can't touch. Currently thinking we will have several processes, one per interface we need to do. The question is how to structure things. Several of the APIs we need to work with are Java based. We could go EJB, but prefer to keep it simple, one process per interface, so that we can restart them individually. Similarly SOA seems overkill, although I am probably mixing my thoughts about implementations of it compared to the concepts behind it... Currently thinking that something Spring based is the way to go. In true, "leverage a new tech if possible"-style, I am thinking maybe we can shoe horn some jruby into this, perhaps to make the APIs more readable, perhaps event-machine-like and to make the interface code more business-friendly, perhaps even storing the mapping code in the DB, as ruby snippets that get mixed in... but thats an aside... So, any comments/thoughts on the Spring approach - anything more up-to-date/relevant these days. EDIT: Looking a JRuby further, I am tempted to write it fully in JRuby... in which case do we need any frameworks at all, perhaps some gems to make things clearer... Thanks in advance, Chris

  • How to design highly scalable web services in Java?

    - by Kshitiz Sharma
I am creating some Web Services that would have 2000 concurrent users. The services are offered for free and are hence expected to get a large user base. In the future it may be required to scale up to 50,000 users. There are already a few other questions that address the issue like - Building highly scalable web services However my requirements differ from the question above. For example - My application does not have a user interface, so images, CSS, javascript are not an issue. It is in Java so suggestions like using HipHop to translate PHP to native code are useless. Hence I decided to ask my question separately. This is my project setup - Rest based Web services using Apache CXF Hibernate 3.0 (With relevant optimizations like lazy loading and custom HQL for tune up) Tomcat 6.0 MySql 5.5 My questions are - Are there alternatives to Mysql that offer better performance for what I'm trying to do? What are some general things to abide by in order to scale a Java based web application? I am thinking of putting my Application in two tomcat instances with httpd redirecting the request to appropriate tomcat on basis of load. Is this the right approach? Separate tomcat instances can help but then database becomes the bottleneck since both applications access the same database? I am a programmer not a Db Admin, how difficult would it be to cluster a Mysql database (or, to cluster whatever database offered as an alternative to 1)? How effective are caching solutions like EHCache? Any other general best practices? Some clarifications - Could you partition the data? Yes we could but we're trying to avoid it. We need to run a lot of data mining algorithms and the design would evolve over time so we can't be sure what lines of partition should be there.

  • Is the output of Eclipse's incremental java compiler used in production? Or is it simply to support Eclipse's features?

    - by Doug T.
I'm new to Java and Eclipse. One of my most recent discoveries was how Eclipse comes shipped with its own java compiler (ejc) for doing incremental builds. Eclipse seems to by default output incrementally built class files to the projRoot/bin folder. I've noticed too that many projects come with ant files to build the project that uses the java compiler built into the system for doing the production builds. Coming from a Windows/Visual Studio world where Visual Studio is invoking the compiler for both production and debugging, I'm used to the IDE having a more intimate relationship with the command-line compiler. I'm used to the project being the make file. So my mental model is a little off. Is whats produced by Eclipse ever used in production? Or is it typically only used to support Eclipse's features (ie its intellisense/incremental building/etc)? Is it typical that for the final "release" build of a project, that ant, maven, or another tool is used to do the full build from the command line? Mostly I'm looking for the general convention in the Eclipse/Java community. I realize that there may be some outliers out there who DO use ecj in production, but is this generally frowned upon? Or is this normal/accepted practice?

  • How do you encode Algebraic Data Types in a C#- or Java-like language?

    - by Jörg W Mittag
There are some problems which are easily solved by Algebraic Data Types, for example a List type can be very succinctly expressed as: data ConsList a = Empty | ConsCell a (ConsList a) consmap f Empty = Empty consmap f (ConsCell a b) = ConsCell (f a) (consmap f b) l = ConsCell 1 (ConsCell 2 (ConsCell 3 Empty)) consmap (+1) l This particular example is in Haskell, but it would be similar in other languages with native support for Algebraic Data Types. It turns out that there is an obvious mapping to OO-style subtyping: the datatype becomes an abstract base class and every data constructor becomes a concrete subclass. Here's an example in Scala: sealed abstract class ConsList[+T] { def map[U](f: T => U): ConsList[U] } object Empty extends ConsList[Nothing] { override def map[U](f: Nothing => U) = this } final class ConsCell[T](first: T, rest: ConsList[T]) extends ConsList[T] { override def map[U](f: T => U) = new ConsCell(f(first), rest.map(f)) } val l = (new ConsCell(1, new ConsCell(2, new ConsCell(3, Empty))) l.map(1+) The only thing needed beyond naive subclassing is a way to seal classes, i.e. a way to make it impossible to add subclasses to a hierarchy. How would you approach this problem in a language like C# or Java? The two stumbling blocks I found when trying to use Algebraic Data Types in C# were: I couldn't figure out what the bottom type is called in C# (i.e. I couldn't figure out what to put into class Empty : ConsList< ??? >) I couldn't figure out a way to seal ConsList so that no subclasses can be added to the hierarchy What would be the most idiomatic way to implement Algebraic Data Types in C# and/or Java? Or, if it isn't possible, what would be the idiomatic replacement?

  • Are Java's public fields just a tragic historical design flaw at this point?

    - by Avi Flax
It seems to be Java orthodoxy at this point that one should basically never use public fields for object state. (I don't necessarily agree, but that's not relevant to my question.) Given that, would it be right to say that from where we are today, it's clear that Java's public fields were a mistake/flaw of the language design? Or is there a rational argument that they're a useful and important part of the language, even today? Thanks! Update: I know about the more elegant approaches, such as in C#, Python, Groovy, etc. I'm not directly looking for those examples. I'm really just wondering if there's still someone deep in a bunker, muttering about how wonderful public fields really are, and how the masses are all just sheep, etc. Update 2: Clearly static final public fields are the standard way to create public constants. I was referring more to using public fields for object state (even immutable state). I'm thinking that it does seem like a design flaw that one should use public fields for constants, but not for state… a language's rules should be enforced naturally, by syntax, not by guidelines.

  • Named my RPi 512MB @jerpi_bilbo

    - by hinkmond
To keep our multiple Raspberry Pi boards apart from each other, I've now named my RPi Model B w/512MB: "jerpi_bilbo", which stands for Java Embedded Raspberry Pi - Bilbo (named after the Hobbit from the J.R.R. Tolkien stories). I also, set up a Twitter account for him. You can follow him at: @jerpi_bilbo He's self-tweeting, manual prompted so far (using Java Embedded 7.0 and twitter4j Java library). Works great! I'm setting him up to be automated self-tweeting soon, so watch for that... Here's a pointer to the open source twitter4j Java library: download here Just unzip and extract out the twitter4j-core-2.2.6.jar and put it on your Java Embedded classpath. Here's how @jerpi_bilbo uses it to Tweet with his Java Embedded runtime: import twitter4j.*; import java.io.* public final class Tweet { public static void main(String[] args) { String statusStr = null; if ((args.length 0) && (args[0] != null)) { statusStr = args[0]; } else { statusStr = new String("Hello World!"); } // Create new instance of the Twitter class Twitter twitter = new TwitterFactory().getInstance(); try { Status status = twitter.updateStatus(statusStr); System.out.println ("Successfully updated the status to: " + status.getText()); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } That's all you need. Java Embedded rocks the RPi! And, @jerpi_bilbo is alive... Hinkmond

  • How to return a complex object from an axis web service

    - by jani
    Hi all, I am writing a simple web service to return an object with 2 properties. I am embedding the service into an existing web application. My wsdd looks like this. <globalConfiguration> <parameter name="adminPassword" value="admin"/> <parameter name="sendXsiTypes" value="true"/> <parameter name="sendMultiRefs" value="true"/> <parameter name="sendXMLDeclaration" value="true"/> <parameter name="axis.sendMinimizedElements" value="true"/> <requestFlow> <handler type="java:org.apache.axis.handlers.JWSHandler"> <parameter name="scope" value="session"/> </handler> <handler type="java:org.apache.axis.handlers.JWSHandler"> <parameter name="scope" value="request"/> <parameter name="extension" value=".jwr"/> </handler> </requestFlow> </globalConfiguration> <handler name="LocalResponder" type="java:org.apache.axis.transport.local.LocalResponder"/> <handler name="URLMapper" type="java:org.apache.axis.handlers.http.URLMapper"/> <handler name="Authenticate" type="java:org.apache.axis.handlers.SimpleAuthenticationHandler"/> <transport name="http"> <requestFlow> <handler type="URLMapper"/> <handler type="java:org.apache.axis.handlers.http.HTTPAuthHandler"/> </requestFlow> </transport> <transport name="local"> <responseFlow> <handler type="LocalResponder"/> </responseFlow> </transport> <service name="helloService" provider="java:RPC" style="document" use="literal"> <parameter name="className" value="ws.example.HelloService"/> <parameter name="allowedMethods" value="*"/> <parameter name="scope" value="application"/> </service> I am able to deploy it successfully. If I try to invoke the method which returns a String, it is successfully returning the String. But when I invoke the method which returns an object, I am getting the following error. • Concurrency and Calendar classes

    - by fbielejec
I have a thread (class implementing runnable, called AnalyzeTree) organised around a hash map (ConcurrentMap slicesMap). The class goes through the data (called trees here) in the large text file and parses the geographical coordinates from it to the HashMap. The idea is to process one tree at a time and add or grow the values according to the key (which is just a Double value representing time). The relevant part of code looks like this: // grow map entry if key exists if (slicesMap.containsKey(sliceTime)) { double[] imputedLocation = imputeValue( location, parentLocation, sliceHeight, nodeHeight, parentHeight, rate, useTrueNoise, currentTreeNormalization, precisionArray); slicesMap.get(sliceTime).add( new Coordinates(imputedLocation[1], imputedLocation[0], 0.0)); // start new entry if no such key in the map } else { List<Coordinates> coords = new ArrayList<Coordinates>(); double[] imputedLocation = imputeValue( location, parentLocation, sliceHeight, nodeHeight, parentHeight, rate, useTrueNoise, currentTreeNormalization, precisionArray); coords.add(new Coordinates(imputedLocation[1], imputedLocation[0], 0.0)); slicesMap.putIfAbsent(sliceTime, coords); // slicesMap.put(sliceTime, coords); }// END: key check And the class is called like this (executor is ExecutorService executor = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(NTHREDS) ): mrsd = new SpreadDate(mrsdString); int readTrees = 1; while (treesImporter.hasTree()) { currentTree = (RootedTree) treesImporter.importNextTree(); executor.submit(new AnalyzeTree(currentTree, precisionString, coordinatesName, rateString, numberOfIntervals, treeRootHeight, timescaler, mrsd, slicesMap, useTrueNoise)); // new AnalyzeTree(currentTree, precisionString, // coordinatesName, rateString, numberOfIntervals, // treeRootHeight, timescaler, mrsd, slicesMap, // useTrueNoise).run(); readTrees++; }// END: while has trees Now this is running into troubles when executed in parallel (the commented part running sequentially is fine), I thought it might throw a ConcurrentModificationException, but apparently the problem is in mrsd (instance of SpreadDate object, which is simply a class for date related calculations). The SpreadDate class looks like this: public class SpreadDate { private Calendar cal; private SimpleDateFormat formatter; private Date stringdate; public SpreadDate(String date) throws ParseException { // if no era specified assume current era String line[] = date.split(" "); if (line.length == 1) { StringBuilder properDateStringBuilder = new StringBuilder(); date = properDateStringBuilder.append(date).append(" AD") .toString(); } formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd G", Locale.US); stringdate = formatter.parse(date); cal = Calendar.getInstance(); } public long plus(int days) { cal.setTime(stringdate); cal.add(Calendar.DATE, days); return cal.getTimeInMillis(); }// END: plus public long minus(int days) { cal.setTime(stringdate); cal.add(Calendar.DATE, -days); //line 39 return cal.getTimeInMillis(); }// END: minus public long getTime() { cal.setTime(stringdate); return cal.getTimeInMillis(); }// END: getDate } And the stack trace from when exception is thrown: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 58 at sun.util.calendar.BaseCalendar.getCalendarDateFromFixedDate(BaseCalendar.java:454) at java.util.GregorianCalendar.computeFields(GregorianCalendar.java:2098) at java.util.GregorianCalendar.computeFields(GregorianCalendar.java:2013) at java.util.Calendar.setTimeInMillis(Calendar.java:1126) at java.util.GregorianCalendar.add(GregorianCalendar.java:1020) at utils.SpreadDate.minus(SpreadDate.java:39) at templates.AnalyzeTree.run(AnalyzeTree.java:88) at java.util.concurrent.Executors$RunnableAdapter.call(Executors.java:471) at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask$Sync.innerRun(FutureTask.java:334) at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask.run(FutureTask.java:166) at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.runWorker(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:1110) at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.run(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:603) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:636) If a move the part initializing mrsd to the AnalyzeTree class it runs without any problems - however it is not very memory efficient to initialize class each time this thread is running, hence my concerns. How can it be remedied?
