    Can't get ubuntu 12.04 to set pixel resolution higher than 1360x768. Very new to linux liking it other than this lol. I have a dell xps 420 with a nvidia geforce 260 hooked up to my 55 inch tv through a dvi/hdmi adapter.The display program wont set the resolution above 1360x768.I have tried the two "additional driver" options for the graphics card and the Details Window doesn't recognise with either driver.

  • What Interface Toolkit is being recommended for Ubuntu on Nexus7/Mobile Devices?

    I understand this is a may be a very premature question given that the current build is for testing Ubuntu Core, but I have just bought a Nexus7 to join in with this Ubuntu on mobile adventure and can't help wanting to start writing some apps! I haven't really dabbled with either GTK or QT for touch apps yet and, having seen that Ubuntu TV is using Nux, I wondered what people on AskUbuntu-land would recommend. Hope someone out there know this! Cheers

  • Sound through HDMI with the NVIDIA drivers

    I am running a media center setup with the display through HDMI, powered by a NVIDIA card. I am using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers availabler through the additional drivers utility, on Xubuntu 11.10. In the mixer, I have all the volumes unmuted and turned up to 100%, but no sound through the HDMI. If I plug in speakers the nd comes through just fine. What can I do to make the sound go through the HDMI and to the TV?

  • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

    This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them.     PROBLEM - When installing UBUNTU Natty on my friends Laptop with a HDMI cable attached to both TV and Laptop both screens echo each other BUT when reboot has taken place nothing is displayed on the external screen.   • Windows 8 DLNA streaming of MKV files

    I have a Samsung TV that is capable of playing MKV files. The Windows DLNA Play To menu that appears when you right-click a media file does not support MKV files, but a simple trick has been to change the file extension from .mkv to .avi so the Play To context menu item would appear. At that point I could successfully stream from my computer to my TV. However, this does not appear to work in Windows 8. Doing the same thing in Windows 8 causes the Play To window to open but the file does not get played. Dragging and dropping the file in the Play To window causes it to be silently ignored. Using actual AVI, MP4, etc. files works, of course. It appears Windows 8 is now doing some kind of validation on the file that Windows 7 wasn't previously. The Play To window does not show any kind of obvious error message or warning and there is nothing in the Windows event log. So, is there a way in Windows 8 to stream MKV files to a DLNA device without converting it to another container format? I would rather not use extra third-party software, but I would consider it if it's purposefully designed for this simple case rather than a more robust "media library/server" solution.

  • "Modern" Ethernet over coax

    So, I've just bought a house. It's reasonably new - built in the early '00s. One of the features that got built in was a cable TV drop in every room. The cabling is gorgeous - there's even a wiring cabinet of sorts in a closet where the cables all tie together to the splitter to the outside line. Of course, my problem is that I only own the one TV. I do, however, own a few computers. What I would love to be able to do is drop a switch in the wiring closet and run 100/1000BASE-T ethernet over the coax in the walls I wouldn't otherwise be using. My fantasy would be if you could get some kind of adapter-plug-thing that would take a coax plug on one side and a cat5/RJ45 plug on the other. Had anyone else done this? Any suggestions? (There are a few other options that suggest themselves - first, I could just use the existing cabling channels and re-run cat5 or 6 through the walls. While tempting, that sounds like more work than I really want to put in, so I'm calling that Plan B. Also, I could just scare up a mess of old 10BASE2 cards and run the house on thinnet, all mid-90s style. While I think I'd get major style points for that, I don't think I can get a 10BASE2 adapter for the new laptop. Also, I have all these super-snazzy gigabit adaptors I'd like to be using. And so forth.)

  • Remote Desktop Connection to the same screen as on the monitor?

    I'm running Windows Home Server on, well, my server. It's in my entertainment center, hooked to my TV, and I use it to listen to music and watch movies. Right now I have a keyboard and mouse stuck beside my TV so that I'm able to load a movie. It would be nice, though, to be able to remotely control the screen. Remote Desktop Connection seems to open its own session in the background, separate from the session shown on the monitor. This doesn't do any good because things started via remote desktop must be closed or changed via remote desktop, and I can't start a movie with remote desktop and then see it from the screen. Is there a way to get Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the visible screen? I am currently using UltraVNC; it was doing the job, but it has its quirks. For instance, the problem just now that prompted me to ask this question; upon trying to connect, UltraVNC informs me that "Server closed connection - The server running as application". This is just one of several problems I've had with it, and I want something that is as reliable and low-maintenance as the built-in Remote Desktop Connection. (and free) If the answer to the above is no, I'm welcome to recommendations for a different remote desktop system to try.

  • How can I fix my vista PCs screen resolution and refresh rate

    I have a media PC running media portal hooked up to my HDTV via HDMI. The TV is a couple of years old now, so only supports 1080i, which is 1920x1080@25Hz. I've got it connected to my PC via a HDMI compatible AV receiver. If I power up the amp (wait for it to boot fully) followed by the TV| and finally the PC, all is well and I get a picture. If I deviate from that sequence, or don't wait for the amp to book up fully, or even switch the amp to another video input (for example, my PS3). The PC sees this and defaults the screen resolution/refresh rate to 1920x1080@60Hz. So, I end up with a blank screen. To fix this I have to use UltraVNC from a PC and change the refresh rate back to 25Hz. So, is there a way to turn off that auto detection, or to manually define what resolution/refresh rates the monitor can do. I'm using the on-board Radeon 3200 video and do not have any of the AMD software installed as it seems to cause problems with video playback. So, I'm looking for a native vista fix, or possible some 3rd party software.
