  • What to store at application Settings, numeric / string representations or objects?

    - by SoMoS
Hello, I've been thinking for a while on what to store at the Project Settings, objects or numeric/string representations of those objects to set a rule and avoid thinking on this at the future so I want to take the best approach. On one side storing object representations grants you that what is stored is valid and saves you from doing conversions each time you access them. You only need objects with the attribute. At the other side storing the numeric/string representation of an object eases the editing of the setting because at the end the user will be entering numeric or string information. What do you do with this issue?

  • What web application is recommended when programming in Java for beginners?

    - by user1710260
I am a beginner (almost no knowledge) to web applications. I have been programming in Java for about a year now. I have being doing some research on the different frameworks that are available and I want to find which one is right for me. From what I found: Play, Stripes, and Spring are good choices for beginners, but how can I compare these frameworks together. What is it that I need to look for when comparing them? My project that I am starting to work on is similar to an App Store. Basically an info site on different apps. Any advise will be appreciated.

  • [ASP.NET 4.0] Persisting Row Selection in Data Controls

    - by HosamKamel
Data Control Selection Feature In ASP.NET 2.0: ASP.NET Data Controls row selection feature was based on row index (in the current page), this of course produce an issue if you try to select an item in the first page then navigate to the second page without select any record you will find the same row (with the same index) selected in the second page! In the sample application attached: Select the second row in the books GridView. Navigate to second page without doing any selection You will find the second row in the second page selected. Persisting Row Selection: Is a new feature which replace the old selection mechanism which based on row index to be based on the row data key instead. This means that if you select the third row on page 1 and move to page 2, nothing is selected on page 2. When you move back to page 1, the third row is still selected. Data Control Selection Feature In ASP.NET 3.5 SP1: The Persisting Row Selection was initially supported only in Dynamic Data projects Data Control Selection Feature In ASP.NET 4.0: Persisted selection is now supported for the GridView and ListView controls in all projects. You can enable this feature by setting the EnablePersistedSelection property, as shown below: Important thing to note, once you enable this feature you have to set the DataKeyNames property too because as discussed the full approach is based on the Row Data Key Simple feature but  is a much more natural behavior than the behavior in earlier versions of ASP.NET. • Management and Monitoring Tools for Windows Azure

    - by BuckWoody
With such a large platform, Windows Azure has a lot of moving parts. We’ve done our best to keep the interface as simple as possible, while giving you the most control and visibility we can. However, as with most Microsoft products, there are multiple ways to do something – and I’ve always found that to be a good strength. Depending on the situation, I might want a graphical interface, a command-line interface, or just an API so I can incorporate the management into my own tools, or have third-party companies write other tools. While by no means exhaustive, I thought I might put together a quick list of a few tools you can use to manage and monitor Windows Azure components, from our IaaS, SaaS and PaaS offerings. Some of the products focus on one area more than another, but all are available today. I’ll try and maintain this list to keep it current, but make sure you check the date of this post’s update – if it’s more than six months old, it’s most likely out of date. Things move fast in the cloud. The Windows Azure Management Portal The primary tool for managing Windows Azure is our portal – most everything you need is there, from creating new services to querying a database. There are two versions as of this writing – a Silverlight client version, and a newer HTML5 version. The latter is being updated constantly to be in parity with the Silverlight client. There’s a balance in this portal between simplicity and power – we’re following the “less is more” approach, with increasing levels of detail as you work through the portal rather than overwhelming you with a single, long “more is more” page. You can find the Portal here: http://windowsazure.com (then click “Log In” and then “Portal”) Windows Azure Management API You can also use programming tools to either write your own interface, or simply provide management functions directly within your solution. - by user2565192
I have developed a simple Facebook Game listed in the facebook App Center. It has a "Send to mobile" button which basically sends the download link to the phone after prompting the user to enter his/her mobile phone number. I want to include that button in my Application. But i can't find any API to include it. How should i include it in my game? Its HTML code is: <a class="_42ft _42fu uiSendToMobile phone_button selected _42g- _42gy" role="button" href="#" ajaxify="/ajax/platform/send_to_mobile?app_id=274173959270591&amp;element_id=u_0_b&amp;fb_source=102" rel="async-post" id="u_0_c">Send to Mobile</a>

  • Internationalization of non-english application

    - by Jacket
I know there are lots of posts for internationalization, but this is something I didn't found while searching. I have a PHP Web application, which is pretty big right now. It's developed actively for 4 years and wasn't built with internationalization in mind. Text is everywhere - in plain HTML, in PHP variables, in echo's, in the DB... Now I'm familiar with the concept of gettext and this is what i plan to use for the internationalization project of the application. However the app is not written in English and here is my question: Should I first translate everything to English while wrapping every string in gettext() function, or I can use my native language as a base? P.S. also any quick suggestions (links maybe) on making my life easier with the whole i18n project will be greatly appreciated!

Is there another way to use AccountsService with Python? I could not find more documentation about AccountsService and Python.

  • Seattle GiveCamp this Weekend

    - by Stephen.Walther
Seattle GiveCamp is this weekend (October 19, 2012) on the Microsoft Campus. Donate your time and your programming skills to build software applications (mainly websites) for charities. We need you! Go to the following address and sign up to participate right now: http://seattlegivecamp.com/ We have more than 20 charities participating in this year’s GiveCamp and over 100 volunteers. We need people with all sorts of skills including WordPress, design, ASP.NET, SEO, Mobile, and Project Management skills. If you know how to tweak a WordPress theme or you know how to use Adobe Photoshop or you know Salesforce or Microsoft Access then we really, really need you this weekend. This is a great event to network with other developers, show off your ninja programming skills, and help some great charities. Be prepared to show up at Friday night and start working in a team to write some great code. You can stay until Sunday night for the full event or you can leave early (in previous events, some developers did marathon coding sessions for multiple days straight – but those guys are insane). My wife, Ruth Walther, is the director of this year’s GiveCamp. She’ll be there and I’ll be there. I hope to see you at GiveCamp!

  • How to install and make development use of gtk+ on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by el10780
I want to install gtk+ in order to make an application with a graphical environment.I went to the official website of gtk(gtk.org) and I tried to follow the instructions, but I wasn't able to make it work.I think that I have successfully managed to do the whole process till the part that I had to run make install and after that ldconfig. So far so good. After that though the complete chaos.I do not know how to set all these configurations so I can make my compilers know where to look for the include files.I just want to make it work in my Ubuntu when I start making a source file and then compile it and run it.

  • How to create a PPA for C++ program?

    - by piotr
My questions are: c++/gtkmm project created with NetBeans. How to make package to PPA from this? I have created target files structure (*.desktop, iconfile, ui glade files). Binary goes to /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/myagenda/bin/myagenda. There is also a folder of glade files, that must go to /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/myagenda/bin/myagenda/ui. Desktop file goes to /usr/share/applications/myagenda.desktop. Icon goes to /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/myagenda.svg As you see, there is really small amount of files. Now, how to manage all this stuff, to create package on PPA, which knows where and how put this files to their targets? +-- opt ¦   +-- extras.ubuntu.com ¦   +-- myagenda ¦   +-- bin ¦   ¦   +-- myagenda ¦   +-- ui ¦   +-- item_btn_delete.png ¦   +-- item_btn_edit.png ¦   +-- myagenda.png ¦   +-- myagenda.svg ¦   +-- reminder.png ¦   +-- ui.glade +-- usr +-- share +-- applications ¦   +-- myagenda.desktop +-- icons +-- hicolor +-- scalable +-- apps +-- myagenda.svg Update: Created install file in debian directory with targets: data/myagenda /opt/extras.ubuntu/com/myagenda/bin data/ui/* /opt/extras.ubuntu/com/myagenda/ui data/myagenda.desktop /usr/share/applications data/myagenda.svg /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps After dpkg-buildpackage it builds, but for amd64 architecture. Now, trying to change that to i386.

  • Is SQL Azure a newbies springboard?

    - by jamiet
Earlier today I was considering the various SQL Server platforms that are available today and I wondered aloud, wonder how long until the majority of #sqlserver newcomers use @sqlazure instead of installing locally Let me explain. My first experience of development was way back in the early 90s when I would crank open VBA in Access or Excel and start hammering out some code, usually by recording macros and looking at the code that they produced (sound familiar?). The reason was simple, Office was becoming ubiquitous so the barrier to entry was incredibly low and, save for a short hiatus at university, I’ve been developing on the Microsoft platform ever since. These days spend most of my time using SQL Server. I take a look at SQL Azure today I see a lot of similarities with those early experiences, the barrier to entry is low and getting lower. I don’t have to download some software or actually install anything other than a web browser in order to get myself a fully functioning SQL Server  database against which I can ostensibly start hammering out some code and I believe that to be incredibly empowering. Having said that there are still a few pretty high barriers, namely: I need to get out my credit card Its pretty useless without some development tools such as SQL Server Management Studio, which I do have to install. The second of those barriers will disappear pretty soon when Project Houston delivers a web-based admin and presentation tool for SQL Azure so that just leaves the matter of my having to use a credit card. If Microsoft have any sense at all then they will realise the huge potential of opening up a free, throttled version of SQL Azure for newbies to party on; they get to developers early (just like they did with me all those years ago) and it gives potential customers an opportunity to try-before-they-buy. Perhaps in 20 years time people will be talking about SQL Azure as being their first foray into the world of coding! @Jamiet Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • What FOSS solutions are available to manage software requirements?

    - by boos
In the company where I work, we are starting to plan to be compliant to the software development life cycle. We already have, wiki, vcs system, bug tracking system, and a continuous integration system. The next step we want to have is to start to manage, in a structured way, software requirements. We dont want to use a wiki or shared documentation because we have many input (developer, manager, commercial, security analyst and other) and we dont want to handle proliferation of .doc around the network share. We are trying to search and we hope we can find and use a FOSS software to manage all this things. We have about 30 people, and don't have a budget for commercial software. We need a free solution for requirements management. What we want is software that can manage: Required features: Software requirements divided in a structured configurable way Versioning of the requirements (history, diff, etc, like source code) Interdependency of requirements (child of, parent of, related to) Rule Based Access Control for data handling Multi user, multi project File upload (for graph, document related to or so on) Report and extraction features Optional Features: Web Based Test case Time based management (timeline, excepted data, result data) Person allocation and so on Business related stuff Hardware allocation handling I have already play with testlink and now i'm playing with RTH, the next one i try is redmine.

  • Public Speaking in software development.

    - by mummey
Greetings my fellow cubicle dwellers. I've found my role gradually change from "feature-maintainer" to "feature-developer". While much of the former would consist of fixing and/or updating an existing feature (and quietly grumbling about it's implementation with complete naiveté), in this new role I find: Have to communicate with immediate management to define the development requirements to turnaround the new feature Have to communicate with design to determine the user requirements of the new feature Have to communicate with QA to determine test sets for the new feature, as well as it's current state during development. Have to communicate with producers/project-managers to define remaining turnaround time as well as updates in development requirements. and finally, have to occasionally communicate with upper-management to defend the new feature and demonstrate it's minimized risk to the upcoming release. The last item is key here, and this took me a couple occasions to completely realize. In all, though, it becomes very apparent that communication skills ARE important, even or especially as such for developers who feel they 'own' the feature they're working on. All of this said, I recognize it's importance and would like to improve my skills in this area further. I enjoy one-on-one communication but find I tend to stutter a bit when speaking to any group larger than a few people I know well. Where can I find good resources to improve my own communication skills?

  • Customizing configuration with Dependency Injection

    - by mathieu
I'm designing a small application infrastructure library, aiming to simplify development of ASP.NET MVC based applications. Main goal is to enforce convention over configuration. Hovewer, I still want to make some parts "configurable" by developpers. I'm leaning towards the following design: public interface IConfiguration { SomeType SomeValue; } // this one won't get registered in container protected class DefaultConfiguration : IConfiguration { public SomeType SomeValue { get { return SomeType.Default; } } } // declared inside 3rd party library, will get registered in container protected class CustomConfiguration : IConfiguration { public SomeType SomeValue { get { return SomeType.Custom; } } } And the "service" class : public class Service { private IConfiguration conf = new DefaultConfiguration(); // optional dependency, if found, will be set to CustomConfiguration by DI container public IConfiguration Conf { get { return conf; } set { conf = value; } } public void Configure() { DoSomethingWith( Conf ); } } There, the "configuration" part is clearly a dependency of the service class, but it this an "overuse" of DI ?

    - by sapeish
In any browser if I use www.mysite.com or just mysite.com the web page is correctly retrieved, but I am having trouble with Google Analytics and Facebook App. Facebook: To be able to get Likes, I create the Facebook App needed and set the site URL to http://mysite.com/. Using their tool http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/ when I test my page using http://mypage.com it works but using http://www.mypage.com fails with the message: Object at URL 'http://www.mysite.com/' of type 'website' is invalid because the domain 'www.mysite.com' is not allowed for the specified application id. Google Analytics: To be able to get traffic statistics, I created a Property and a Profile both with the URL http://www.mypage.com and no statistics were gathered in a week, when I changed the configured URL to http://mypage.com statistics where available a few hours later. What should I do to have statistics and likes for both www.mysite.com and mysite.com ??

  • Sending keyboard commands to Ubuntu through Python. Remote for my Blackberry

    - by Rudi Strydom
I am trying to build a remote control application to control media on my Ubuntu. Does anyone know a way in order to accomplish this. The media keys in particular. Thank you. EDIT 1: I have tried using XTE, but is seems python in truncating the input or there is a limit or something which means that you can't do Ctrl + Key key presses, which wont suit my needs. I also tried uinput, but alas you need to run it as root, which also will not quite my needs. Now I am looking at EVDEV which seems promicing, that is if I can get it working.

I found the QtQuick.Controls (http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5.1/qtquickcontrols/qtquickcontrols-index.html), but when I try make a simple application, it tells me that QtQuick.Controls isn't installed. main.qml: import QtQuick 2.1 import QtQuick.Controls 1.0 Rectangle { height: 200 width: 200 } terminal: $ qmlscene main.qml file:///tmp/main.qml:2 module "QtQuick.Controls" is not installed Also, I downloaded the source from https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qtquickcontrols/source/stable, ran qmake && make, but this returned the following output: cd src/ && ( test -e Makefile || /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qmake /tmp/qtquickcontrols/src/src.pro -o Makefile ) && make -f Makefile make[1]: Går til katalog '/tmp/qtquickcontrols/src' cd controls/ && ( test -e Makefile || /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qmake /tmp/qtquickcontrols/src/controls/controls.pro -o Makefile ) && make -f Makefile make[2]: Går til katalog '/tmp/qtquickcontrols/src/controls' g++ -c -g -O2 -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -Wformat -Werror=format-security -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -O2 -fvisibility=hidden -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -std=c++0x -fno-exceptions -Wall -W -D_REENTRANT -fPIC -DQT_NO_XKB -DQT_NO_EXCEPTIONS -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_PLUGIN -DQT_QUICK_LIB -DQT_QML_LIB -DQT_WIDGETS_LIB -DQT_NETWORK_LIB -DQT_GUI_LIB -DQT_CORE_LIB -I/usr/share/qt5/mkspecs/linux-g++ -I. -I/usr/include/qt5 -I/usr/include/qt5/QtQuick -I/usr/include/qt5/QtQml -I/usr/include/qt5/QtWidgets -I/usr/include/qt5/QtNetwork -I/usr/include/qt5/QtGui -I/usr/include/qt5/QtGui/5.1.1 -I/usr/include/qt5/QtGui/5.1.1/QtGui -I/usr/include/qt5/QtCore -I/usr/include/qt5/QtCore/5.1.1 -I/usr/include/qt5/QtCore/5.1.1/QtCore -I.moc/release-shared -o .obj/release-shared/qquickaction.o qquickaction.cpp qquickaction.cpp:49:39: fatal error: private/qguiapplication_p.h: No such file or directory #include <private/qguiapplication_p.h> ^ Is there some PPA I could use, or do I have to wait for Trusty to get out, before I can use native controls from Qt?   • Music player that remembers last song and playlist

    - by user654628
I am looking for something similar to winamp. I have seen other threads but I have tried some solutions and they did not work. I tried Banshee that comes with Ubuntu 11.10 but it does not open last song. I tried Rhythmbox with the remember last song plugin however it does not remember the playlist I got the song from so it would start shuffling all my music. I tried Amarok and it does the same thing as Banshee except cannot even play my playlist and starts playing all my music. I tried audacious but importing my playlist .m3u doesnt allow me to select the individual playlists and play them. I just moved from Windows using winamp and would like a music player that can open playlists .m3u and when I open the application later that it opens the last song and playlist and I can press the play hotkey and music will start playing on startup similar to winamp. I do not care about any additional functionality or user interface.

  • How to promote/market an event that needs many people?

    - by stjowa
My team is about to launch a new web application, http://wethepixels.com, that requires a lot of people to be on the site at the same time for the concept to be successful. Our team is preparing to promote/market an event for a specific date and time, in order to try to grab a large group of people to the site at once. For those who have gone through a similar web launch, we would love to hear ideas on the best way to market for a large group in a relatively short period of time. We have created a Facebook page and a Facebook event, but it has yet to grab much attention (surprisingly to us). Is there a better way to attract a large number of users in a short period of time? Thanks

  • Requirements/issue tracker similar to online spreadsheet

    - by Maxim Eliseev
Is there a requirements/issue tracker software which is similar to Google spreadsheet? We have Fogbugz but I find it more heavyweight and slow than a simple spreadsheet. Is there a Fogbugz alternative which is - fast - can show issues/requirements as a spreadsheet (at) and allows in-place editing - supports tree structures (where issue can have child issues)? It is required for a small project. There will be 2 developers and 1-2 other users. I guess that only one user will be actively maintaining it. UPDATE I do not say that a spreadsheet is better than Fogbugz or similar tools. In fact I am looking for a tool which is similar to Fogbugz and could replace a spreadsheet, but faster than Fogbugz and has an additional feature (table-like mode). I'd like to find a tool which can operate in a mode which looks like a table (one row per issue) but has a rich set features (similar to Fogbugs and JIRA). I find Fogbugz (and similar tools) inconvenient because I must enter the web form in order to edit anything. In-place editing (when issues are shown as a table) would be much faster.

  • Sending keystrokes using Python

    - by Rudi Strydom
I am trying to build a remote control application to control media on my Ubuntu. Does anyone know a way in order to accomplish this. The media keys in particular. Thank you. EIDT: I have tried using XTE, but is seems python in truncating the input or there is a limit or something which means that you can't do Ctrl + Key key presses, which wont suit my needs. I also tried uinput, but alas you need to run it as root, which also will not quite my needs. Now I am looking at EVDEV which seems promicing, that is if I can get it working.

  • Inspecting the model in a Rails application

    - by Matt Sherman
I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

  • Why does quickly package --extras fail (where quickly package doesn't)?

    - by Pablo
When I attempt to use quickly package --verbose --extras on my application I get these errors at the end: sed -i "s|__soundboard_data_directory__ =.*|__soundboard_data_directory__ = '/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/soundboard/share/soundboard/'|" debian/soundboard/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/soundboard/soundboard*/soundboardconfig.py sed: can't read debian/soundboard/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/soundboard/soundboard*/soundboardconfig.py: No such file or directory make[1]: *** [override_dh_install] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/pablo/soundboard' make: *** [binary] Error 2 dpkg-buildpackage: error: fakeroot debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2 I haven't a clue what is wrong here. When I run package --extras on a clean template it runs fine. soundboardconfig.py is an unmodified appnameconfig.py the template makes. I'm not sure if my full source code is needed for this or not, but can be provided. EDIT: Forgot to mention quickly package creates a working package, only --extras fails.
