• What tools exist for designing layouts and pre-production templates for Rails 3 applications?

  I develop Rails 3 applications, but prior to this, my background was a designer (typically making mockups in Photoshop and then breaking them down to HTML5/CSS3). Now, some great tools/templates exist for getting working layouts ready for Rails and other apps quickly, e.g., http://railsapps.github.com/rails-composer/. Many are using CSS Frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap. I'd like to know whether there is a local app (for Mac) that can design layouts, much the way Dreamweaver would, but that are geared towards being utilized in a Twitter Bootstrap situation alongside Ruby (Rails) or Python apps, etc.

  Is there any design pattern or practice recommended for business layer when dealing with multiple API version. For example, I have something like this. http://site.com/blogs/v1/?count=10 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs(int count) to get information http://site.com/blogs/v2/?blog_count=20 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs_v2(int blogCounts) Since parameter name is changed, I created another business method for version 2. This is just one example but it could have other breaking changes for which it requires me to create another method to support both version. Is there any design pattern or best practice for business/data access layer I should follow when supporting API Versioning?

• What is an effective way to organize tasks for a new project?

  Is there a practical solution to organizing the initial tasks for a new project? To elaborate, imagine the features/stories/goals are laid out for a project. How might one go about organizing those into sane tasks for the first few versions? The scenario I typically have in mind has the features listed as a high-level reference for what the end user-experience should involve. The tasks for constructing such features are then broken down into chunks (such as "create interface for X component"). Such a task is not necessarily "tied" to only that feature and may be useful when building subsequent features. Is breaking features down into small, code-able solutions valid? Or should they be slightly removed from any specific implementation? I do not expect that there is one "right" answer to this question, but I am looking for a fairly pragmatic and unobtrusive approach. As a note, I'm looking for solutions that are independent of any tools or "systems" used for managing the tasks themselves.

  I am currently deciding between a CMS (joomla OR wordpress )to dive deep into. I think I would go for wordpress, but the only thing thats holding me back are any potential issues with updating wordpress- that updating wordpress can break plugins, but is necessary because of security issues. How drastic are the changes in wordpress? say over a period of 2-3 years? from the perspective of someone intending to dive head first in its code. Should I fear regular updates breaking stuff ? • Questionable ethics regarding closed source softwares which are supposed to be open source.

  Several days ago I heard a sentence "Cracking company name routers are not a crime.". I asked "Why?" and the guy explained to me that company name used a linux distribution on their routers which source can not be closed because of their license but company name closed it. What do you think about this? Doing otherwise unethical "cracking" becomes ethical, or somewhat neutral if the software in question is "cracked" too? By "cracking" I don't mean breaking into a computer through someones' company name router but "cracking" my own router's OS which otherwise would be unethical.

  An interrupted installation of updates resulted in ubuntuone-control-panel-qt breaking and now I cannot install or update anything. There seems to be an error in python2.7 - ImportError: No module named _sysconfigdata_nd dpkg: error processing archive ubuntuone-control-panel-qt_13.09-0ubuntu1_all.deb (--install): When I try to reinstall the package via .deb a dpkg --audit yields: The following packages are in a mess due to serious problems during installation. • Wordpress Multisite Network installation and dev questions

  Please go easy on me. I'm a clutzy dinosaur. I currently have a large, unwieldy website hand-coded in html/css with php includes. It currently has a single WP installation in a subdirectory. The plan is to reorganize, and I want to use WP as the CMS and incorporate 3 WP blogs for 3 subdomains. Ideally, would like to create a WP multisite network to allow for further expansion and to save admin trouble. I just want to confirm that if I install WP in the root directory and create 3 blogs (in subdomains), does this mean my website's home page is the mother blog's index.php? Essentially, I will have created 4 blogs - mother at root and 3 children in subdomains? How to set this up on my Mac (OSX 10.5.8) running MAMP for development? And then how to migrate to server without breaking?

  Is there any way to learn for sure why Google penalized a specific site? I think about situation when webmaster/site administrator is aware about Google rules and is sure they aren't breaking any, but the site is penalized nevertheless. The only information you get from Google is that they processed your reconsideration request but they neither say what is the result nor what is the penalty reason if they keep the site penalized. You can try to get information on Google webmasters forum or here but most of the time these are only speculations. Considering the site administrator tried to find out what's wrong but failed, is there a source which can tell what is the problem?

• How to syncronize two animations without delays

  I have one character idle animation running inside a game in a loop, over and over again. A a certain time I trigger another animation to be played, for the same character. The second animation won't play immediately, as will be a discontinuity in my character animation. First I wait for the idle animation to finish and then I play my second animation. Now I have a smooth, continuous animation, BUT I have introduced a delay between my action and character animation. If I play the second animation right away as it is triggered, the character animation won't be continuous and smooth. I was thinking on breaking the idle animation in small pieces and also to have the same number of second action animations to match the last frame of the idle pieces. This won't solve the delay completely, only will minimize it a bit. So it's a magic formula of how can I get rid of this delay? Thanks.

• SharePoint Database security corruption

  Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items. • Why does my FPS drop gradually over time?

  I'm working on this game: yt alpha preview I came into a huge game-breaking problem - after 10-15 min of gameplay the FPS drops from 60 to 30 and is very unstable. I'm using tons of physics and particles, I'm deleting and nulling everything I can after it's supposed to be removed, I remove objects from vectors etc. The memory usage is stable at around 150mb so a leak is unlikely (or invisible?)- after a round ends and I delete everything, play a new round and performance is still terrible. I spent two days trying to figure this out and I just can't fix it. Maybe I'm missing something? I know it's hard to help with no code but I would just have to post my whole source.

• Continuing to code on large projects

  I am a hobbyist programmer, and I've started many medium - sized projects to work on just by myself. These include games, a raytracer, physics simulations etc. By the time these projects get to a certain size (around 5000 lines), I begin to slow down in adding features to the program. This is not because of a lack of ideas of what to implement in a program, but rather a struggle in how to go about it. In particular, I'm afraid of breaking what I already have working in order to implement a new feature. I've tried using version control like Git and Subversion, but these seem unnecessary when you are a one man team. I simply have a folder of "versions" of my program, one for each major change I make. How do I keep coding past this 5000 line mark? What about the 50000 line mark?

  What would be a good MVC/OOP/GRASP/SOLID structure for a search/replace functionality. Methods: search/searchNext/replace/replaceAll. I'm interested only in the PHP arhitecture and how a professional developer would implement this in it's OWN FRAMEWORK. What names would you use for the classes? What subfolders would you used in your MODEL folder? How would you connect the MODELS/CONTROLLER? This is just a arhitecture question to understand better the principles of good OOP in practice. My current implementation is very simplistic using a service model: /controller/SearchReplaceController.php /models/services/SearchReplaceService.php The problem with this is I know I'm breaking SRP in the service but I found this somehow acceptable. Also creating a service does not feel like the best solution for this.

• What is the best taxonomy from Google's perspective?

  I was wondering what the best way is to structure a new website in Google's eyes. Currently, it contains two top-level categories (X & Y), and clicking a term under either one will result in the URL: www.nameofsite.com/X/X type term, or /Y/Y type term Technically, it is correct to group all "X type terms" under X and "Y type terms" under Y, but we could probably be more granular and break all articles into 5-6 top-level categories by breaking Y up into more specific categories. Given that the current URL structure will eventually result in 1000's of "X type terms" and "Y type terms" under just two top-level categories, would it be more advisable to have several of these, as suggested? • Ubuntu 12.04 - what is it with the keyboard layout resets?

  so, on each reboot my keyboard always resets to US (!?) sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration gives temporary relief. Is there a way to make it permanent? I tried: sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup This did not work, and on reboot gnome3 was no longer responsive so I am back to gnome classic.... My other grumbles are here: https://plus.google.com/113037534656133512306/posts/iWjU4zzvVdW Please stop breaking Ubuntu, it used to be great now its as bad as Windows used to be..... which now only costs £70 and is no where near as high maintenance.

• Possible to stop Adobe DreamWeaver from rewriting 'onclick' to 'onClick'? [closed]

  I've been giving my dev team grief by checking in HTML edited in DW. It turns out that DW has silently been rewriting all instances of 'onclick' to 'onClick' completely breaking the application in Webkit on us. I've done some digging on Google and this appears to be a bug that goes back to at least 2004. Supposedly it has nothing to do with your code re-writing settings and what triggers it is opening any document that does not contain a Doctype. Few of ours do, given that we're maintaining a framework that's using all sorts of include and dependency files. In all my Googling, I haven't found a fix, though. Has anyone come across one short of swearing off Adobe products forever?* something, btw, that I'm perfectly fine doing...it's just that given the insane IT lockdown on our work machines, we have very few software choices. For now, It's Notepad++ for me.

• Does spreading content across domains improve ranking? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: The SEO Benefit of Breaking Up Content Onto Different Websites I was wondering if (assuming all your content is related) it would be better to put all your content under a single domain or multiple domains that link to each other. Lets say I have Site A which doesn't have a good search ranking. If I have a new product that I'm sure could get a good ranking on its own would I get a better search ranking for Site A if I - Add the new product as a new section to Site A. Or put the product on new Site B and link back to Site A. To give you an example if you were developing a few browser plugins would it be better (in terms of ranking) to showcase them all in the same site, or would you give them each their own domain's that link to each other?
