  • Centering fonts in VB6

    How do you determine the length of a string of text in Arial Bold font, and then center it in VB6? If not here, can you point me in a direction where I might be able to find this information? We're not using a "label" or "picture box" do print the text to the screen. We are sizing the text on the fly, and allowing the user to scale the size of our application to their liking. We write the text to screen using code.

  • Design pattern to encapsulate common funtionality among UI controls

    I'm brainstorming some ideas around a pattern to use for the following scenario. I have some 3rd party controls that I want to add common functionality to. Functionality is added by handling several of the the events and doing certain things when the events fire along with adding some private variables to hold some state info between events. I want to reuse the code and functionality so this is what I'd typically do. Create a class for this functionality and pass in the instance of the control that I want to add the functionality to in the constructor. Then I can add event handlers to the control in the instance of the class. Can anyone think of alternative patterns to use in order to create this kind of reusable functionality.

  • AJAX Generated Select Won't Redirect

    So, basically I have this select / drop down menu that I use AJAX to retrieve and create, though when an option is selected (so onChange) I want it to redirect! EDIT: Also, the way I have those drop downs coming for the menus is a bit weird and when you hover over any other "sort by" link they disappear, this is a problem with the "sort by school" because the first select box shows the list up, and if you go and select a school then somehow float over another link it disappears, any help on how to delay that or fix that minor problem?

  • How do I use Ruby metaprogramming to refactor this common code?

    I inherited a project with a lot of badly-written Rake tasks that I need to clean up a bit. Because the Rakefiles are enormous and often prone to bizarre nonsensical dependencies, I'm simplifying and isolating things a bit by refactoring everything to classes. Specifically, that pattern is the following: namespace :foobar do desc "Frozz the foobar." task :frozzify do unless Rake.application.lookup('_frozzify') require 'tasks/foobar' Foobar.new.frozzify end Rake.application['_frozzify'].invoke end # Above pattern repeats many times. end # Several namespaces, each with tasks that follow this pattern. In tasks/foobar.rb, I have something that looks like this: class Foobar def frozzify() # The real work happens here. end # ... Other tasks also in the :foobar namespace. end For me, this is great, because it allows me to separate the task dependencies from each other and to move them to another location entirely, and I've been able to drastically simplify things and isolate the dependencies. The Rakefile doesn't hit a require until you actually try to run a task. Previously this was causing serious issues because you couldn't even list the tasks without it blowing up. My problem is that I'm repeating this idiom very frequently. Notice the following patterns: For every namespace :xyz_abc, there is a corresponding class in tasks/... in the file tasks/[namespace].rb, with a class name that looks like XyzAbc. For every task in a particular namespace, there is an identically named method in the associated namespace class. For example, if namespace :foo_bar has a task :apples, you would expect to see def apples() ... inside the FooBar class, which itself is in tasks/foo_bar.rb. Every task :t defines a "meta-task" _t (that is, the task name prefixed with an underscore) which is used to do the actual work. I still want to be able to specify a desc-description for the tasks I define, and that will be different for each task. And, of course, I have a small number of tasks that don't follow the above pattern at all, so I'll be specifying those manually in my Rakefile. I'm sure that this can be refactored in some way so that I don't have to keep repeating the same idiom over and over, but I lack the experience to see how it could be done. Can someone give me an assist?

  • Problem with incomplete input when using Attoparsec

    I am converting some functioning Haskell code that uses Parsec to instead use Attoparsec in the hope of getting better performance. I have made the changes and everything compiles but my parser does not work correctly. I am parsing a file that consists of various record types, one per line. Each of my individual functions for parsing a record or comment works correctly but when I try to write a function to compile a sequence of records the parser always returns a partial result because it is expecting more input. These are the two main variations that I've tried. Both have the same problem. items :: Parser [Item] items = sepBy (comment <|> recordType1 <|> recordType2) endOfLine For this second one I changed the record/comment parsers to consume the end-of-line characters. items :: Parser [Item] items = manyTill (comment <|> recordType1 <|> recordType2) endOfInput Is there anything wrong with my approach? Is there some other way to achieve what I am attempting?

  • How do you unit-test a method with complex input-output

    When you have a simple method, like for example sum(int x, int y), it is easy to write unit tests. You can check that method will sum correctly two sample integers, for example 2 + 3 should return 5, then you will check the same for some "extraordinary" numbers, for example negative values and zero. Each of these should be separate unit test, as a single unit test should contain single assert. What do you do when you have a complex input-output? Take a Xml parser for example. You can have a single method parse(String xml) that receives the String and returns a Dom object. You can write separate tests that will check that certain text node is parsed correctly, that attributes are parsed OK, that child node belongs to parent etc. For all these I can write a simple input, for example <root><child/></root> that will be used to check parent-child relationships between nodes and so on for the rest of expectations. Now, take a look at follwing Xml: <root> <child1 attribute11="attribute 11 value" attribute12="attribute 12 value">Text 1</child1> <child2 attribute21="attribute 21 value" attribute22="attribute 22 value">Text 2</child2> </root> In order to check that method worked correctly, I need to check many complex conditions, like that attribute11 and attribute12 belong to element1, that Text 1 belongs to child1 etc. I do not want to put more than one assert in my unit-test. How can I accomplish that?

  • How to handle dynamic site localizations?

    I've got a website that is currently all in english. It is an online game, so it has a bunch of different pages with static text, as well as a lot of content in a database. I am trying to expand more globally and am gearing up to release some localizations of the site. However, I'm not sure about the best way to go about setting this up so that it'll be the easiest for me to manage and the easiest for users to use as well. Should I be storing the translated texts in a database, or should this be done in a completely different way? If it matters at all, the site is written in PHP and uses MySQL.

    My app is currently written to accept vendor and product information like this. http://www.mydomain.com/foo.aspx?v=1&p=100 could this be re-written like this? http://www.mydomain.com/1/100/foo Since the values in the original query string are database IDs, how would I express newly created IDs as segments of the "path" in the re-written version of the URL? My goal would be to create more of an automated solution that would accomplish this. EDIT: The app is written using ASP.NET webforms, .NET 4.0 and IIS 7

    After some digging here, I took the advice in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/371961/how-to-unit-test-c-web-service-with-visual-studio-2008 I've created a separate class and my web service class is just a wrapper for that one. The problem is that when I try to create a unit test project in VS2008, it insists on creating a unit test that acts like I'm testing the web service calls instead of the class I specified. I can't get to the class I'm trying to test. I have a web service "subscription_api.asmx". The code behind is "subscription_api.cs" which contains the web method wrapper calls to the real code at "subscription.cs".     Given an instance of a class I want to set properties on attributes at runtime.   • How to structure this Symfony web project?

    I am new to Symfony and am not sure how to best structure my web project. The solution must accommodate 3 use cases: Public access to www.mydomain.com for general use Member only access to member.mydomain.com Administrator access to admin.mydomain.com All three virtual hosts point to the Symfony /web directory Questions: Is this 3 separate applications in my Symfony project (e.g. "frontend", "backend" and "admin" or "public", "member", "admin")? Is this a good approach if there is to be some duplicate code (e.g. generating a member list would be common across all 3 applications, but presented differently)? How would I route to the various applications based on the subdomain when a user accesses *.mydomain.com? Where in Symfony should this routing logic be placed? Or, is this one application with modules for each of the above use cases? EDIT: I do not have access to httpd.conf in apache to specify a default page for virtual hosts. I can only specify a directory for each subdomain using the hostin provider's cPanel.

  • Getting Http Status code number (200, 301, 404, etc.) from HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse

    I am trying to get the HTTP status code number from the HttpWebResponse object returned from a HttpWebRequest. I was hoping to get the actual numbers (200, 301,302, 404, etc.) rather than the text description. ("Ok", "MovedPermanently", etc.) Is the number buried in a property somewhere in the response object? Any ideas other than creating a big switch function? Thanks.     I'm getting a lot of errors because qmake is improperly ordering the boost libraries I'm using. Here's what .pro file looks like QT += core gui TARGET = MyTarget TEMPLATE = app CONFIG += no_keywords \ link_pkgconfig SOURCES += file1.cpp \ file2.cpp \ file3.cpp PKGCONFIG += my_package \ sqlite3 LIBS += -lsqlite3 \ -lboost_signals \ -lboost_date_time HEADERS += file1.h\ file2.h\ file3.h FORMS += mainwindow.ui RESOURCES += Resources/resources.qrc This produces the following command: g++ -Wl,-O1 -o MyTarget file1.o file2.o file3.o moc_mainwindow.o -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu -lboost_signals -lboost_date_time -L/usr/local/lib -lmylib1 -lmylib2 -lsqlite3 -lQtGui -lQtCore Note: mylib1 and mylib2 are statically compiled by another project, placed in /usr/local/lib with an appropriate pkg-config .pc file pointing there. The .pro file references them via my_package in PKGCONFIG. The problem is not with pkg-config's output but with Qt's ordering. Here's the .pc file: prefix=/usr/local exec_prefix=${prefix} libdir=${exec_prefix}/lib includedir=${prefix}/include Name: my_package Description: My component package Version: 0.1 URL: http://example.com Libs: -L${libdir} -lmylib1 -lmylib2 Cflags: -I${includedir}/my_package/ The linking stage fails spectacularly as mylib1 and mylib2 come up with a lot of undefined references to boost libraries that both the app and mylib1 and mylib2 are using. We have another build method using scons and it properly orders things for the linker. It's build command order is below. g++ -o MyTarget file1.o file2.o file3.o moc_mainwindow.o -L/usr/local/lib -lmylib1 -lmylib2 -lsqlite3 -lboost_signals -lboost_date_time -lQtGui -lQtCore Note that the principle difference is the order of the boost libs. Scons puts them at the end just before QtGui and QtCore while qmake puts them first. The other differences in the compile commands are unimportant as I have hand modified the qmake produced make file and the simple reordering fixed the problem. So my question is, how do I enforce the right order in my .pro file despite what qmake thinks they should be?
