• System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it? • Ubuntu freezes when gdm starts

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) I was browsing in Firefox yesterday, then the PC suddenly did a reset Once it restarted, everything went normal until gdm begun showing. Then everything froze and locked when userlist showed. I can't move mouse pointer nor do anything with keyboard at this point (just after userlist shows in gdm). PS: Both, mouse and keyboard work fine, because this Ubuntu is dual-booting with a Windows XP install which loads/works fine.   Hello everyone and thanks in advance. I am new in Ubuntu and have the 12.04 version dual boot with Windows XP. I have the following problem. The laptop can reboot using the reboot option from the menu but it cannot shut down. It starts shutting down, the dots appear but then it freezes and does not turn off. Sometimes it shuts down normally (usually just after an update) but then it loses that capability again. Some strange things, I noticed that when the dots freeze, the USB mouse loses power, BUT the usb-powered cooling pad continues to work The only Fn shortcuts that work all the time are the Volume up, down and mute, BUT sometimes when the other Fn combinations (screen-off etc) work the computer shuts down normally I searched a lot on my own, please help.

• Can't start ubuntu 11.10, Stops at login screen!

  I have been trying to dual boot ubuntu with windows 7 via WUBI on my custom built pc but without success. When i start the computer i can choose windows or ubuntu i choose ubuntu and when i should get to the login screen the screen just stays purple/pink. Tried safe mode but cant get in there either. I have tried reinstall but did not work either. :( The second time i install ubuntu the screen was purple/pink and the screen was cut of so the left side was on the right side and right side on left side (hard to describe) Third time installing (The last time) it is just like the first time please help!!!! cant get nowhere without help i am kinda new at ubuntu and its creepy commands. Had ubuntu on my old computer. I think the problem is my hardware so here is my computer specs: Amd Fx 6100 Amd HIS Radeon HD 6950 ICEQ X Asus Sabertooth 990fx 1TB Harddrive I have no idea the name on it Please Help me!! • Routing connections to passthrough a local machine

  Please tell me if what I'm trying to do is feasible. I have a router named "R" which is connected to WAN. R allows adding rules to the routing table. There are numerous of machines connected to the LAN port of R, they all have ip addresses 192.168.1.* assigned with DHCP on R. Among those machines, there's a machine C with ip address 192.168.1.100. I want all traffic of other machines in the subnet to pass-through machine C where some filtering and logging will be done. Is this possible? Is there a name for what I'm trying to do? (so i can do more googling later)

• Ping Flooding in router log

  I've had recently a period of repeated disconnections from my router with connection problems. I checked my router log I found several Ping Flooding entries all originating from the IP 69.171.227.232 which turned out to be one of Facebook IPs! I'm wondering what does that means? Can Facebook chat cause such a condition? My router is DLink dir 600 and the condition that devices were disconnected from router, not router from internet.. Connection is WAN And how to solve this router problem?? My wifi clients were about 3-5 at that time..

• Ubuntu 12.04 freezing on startup

  Have been looking everywhere to find a solution to this problem but have yet to find a solution. I am running 64 bit 12.04 LTS on a AMD C-50 Dual core 6 gigs ram AMD Ratheon HD 6250. The problem I am experiencing is when ubuntu gets to the wallpaper screen it will sometimes freeze soon after the the image appears or shortly there after gnome loads locking up keyboard and mouse. When I try to log in via the console the same thing happens (this is as ubuntu is loading). At the moment the system is set to auto login previously it was set to ask for password but it did the same thing. Switching to from lightdm to gdm did nothing to alleviate the issue. I have never had so many issues with ubuntu I have to say 12.04 is the most buggy version yet.

  I got a slimline s7600n and of course i put ubuntu 12.04 on it. Im using recommended proprietary drivers and they are just not working to well. My monitor is 1366x768 but it will only do 1360x768 and minecraft barely runs at all. Besides that everything is fine. But i gota play minecraft! help! lol Thanks. :) Other specs is cpu amd athlon 64 dual core 2ghz ram 1 gig vid is 256mb 64bit Not sure what other info yall need.

• Unable to install Steam 64bit - Wrong architecture (Lubuntu 12.04)

  I'm on a new install of Lubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire 5534 (specifications here, tl;dr: AMD dual-core 64bit) trying to install steam_latest.deb from the Steam website. When I open gdebi to install, it tells me that it's uninstallable because it's for a i386 architecture. I've tried installing ia32-libs (installed, no success), gdebi --add-architecture i386 (with and without --force, command unknown). This is all I've found to fix the problem, but none of it has worked for me. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks for your time.

• Could not write bytes: broken pipe - looking for log of removed packages

  I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. • compiz problems - no effects work, despite the fact that they seem to be properly configured

  I've looked through some posts about compiz and either haven't found the answer, or haven't understood what's been said. Could someone help me out? I installed ubuntu 12.04 through windows 7 (so I can dual boot) and installed compiz and set up the settings I want (hotcorners etc). For a while it seemed like it was going fine, but then I restarted the laptop, none of the compiz settings were working and the auto-launcher wasn't even coming up when I passed cursor over it. The computer is still usable, when I 'dash home' the auto-launcher appears, and I can tab through windows but yeh... the auto-launcher and hotcorners I set up through compiz aren't working at all. Any ideas? Oh, whilst I'm super grateful for any help I can get, I'd really appreciate it if you could keep any instructions as basic as possible. I'm a bit new at this... THANK YOU!

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 recently. After the first bootup the computer freezes so I have to force-quit my computer. Then I turned on my computer after that. I tried connecting to the internet. My (and my neighbor's) wireless networks shown up, but no matter how many times I tried, I can't connect to my home network. I checked the password and the other laptop's internet works (a MacBookPro). It was a wireless network. What's weird is that the Wireless network worked when I was installing ubuntu How can I connect to the internet now? I don't have a wired network. Please Help! Any help will be appreciated Specs: ASUS F81Se, Windows 7 Dual-boot, I remember the wireless card was made by Atheros, 4GB RAM

• Multiple subnets behind SonicWall TZ 180

  We have a SonicWall TZ180 that acts as a VPN endpoint. Right now it has one WAN IP address and a /24 assigned to the LAN interface. Our mail cluster administrator asked if it was possible to add a second private class C behind the VPN. This second subnet would be available to the other network and then we would use address objects and acls to limit access. Is this possible? I read up on PortShield but I don't know if that's what we would need to use because we're pushing all data out of one physical port into a Cisco switch that has VLANs already set up. Addendum: It appears that PortShields will do what I want with only one limitation; it requires a direct 1-1 relationship of portshield to physical port. This would then limit us to 4 PortShields on 1 TZ180. Is there a better solution than this?

• Changing read-write permissions on my external Seagate hard drive

  I have an external hard drive (Seagate Free Agent) that I normally download files to. I have a dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 along with Windows 7-64 bit. I can read all of my files in my external HD perfectly, but when I attempt to do a download of a file to this drive, I get an "unable to write because of read only" disk error. When I attempt to change the permissions of the disk through the "Properties" bar, I still get an error that I don't have the proper permissions to change permissions. I have heard of "mounting" the disk, but I am afraid of mistakenly reformatting and destroying all the data that I have currently on that drive. How best should I safely change the permissions on that drive so that I can write and download files to the drive?? The drive is listed under /dev/sdc1.

• Using m0n0wall in a VM for testing.

  I'd like to use m0n0wall inside a (VirtualBox) VM to play about with and see what it can do. Ultimately the goal is to have a number of virtual machines connected to a internal virtual network which goes through to the m0n0wall VM, and then the m0n0wall box connected to the internet through NAT or a bridged addaptor on my host machine. I can find out how to set the LAN and WAN addresses, but this seems to be only for using m0n0wall as a router intead of attached to another router. Let's see if I can diagram this: [Virtual Machine]---Internal (VM Only) Network ---[m0n0wall VM]---Bridged/NAT Addaptor---["real" router]---Internet. Can anybody suggest how I should do this or am I thinking m0n0wall isn't meant to be used like this?

• Wubi doesn't install Ubuntu

  I've tried 4 times on 2 different computers. After downloading wubi, and installing Ubuntu inside Windows XP, I restart and get the dual boot screen. I choose Ubuntu, and then nothing, my screen flashes for a few minutes with the Ubuntu colors. I restart and go to Ubuntu recovery, where it says "shadow passwords now on" and "clock off by a day-Fixed". I restart to only get the same thing, but Xubuntu, in stalled on one, but it's Ubuntu I want to try. Any thoughts ??

  having problems with my new lenovo x230 - using dual montiors, only vga registers anything. This has the Intel graphics controller : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) TO get it to even boot, had to add the nomodeset parameter to the kernel. Otherwise will not even start up X Ive upgraded my kernel to the latest 3.6 with no difference. The display section reads the monitor as the only display and labels it as laptop. Cant seem to get it to work! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Missing launcher, top panel without icons, an ATI driver problem?

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10, the following problems occurs when accesing in ubuntu mode (3D): the launcher is missing, top panel without icons on the right side, and I can only restart with Terminal (Alt-T and then sudo reboot). No problems in 2D. It occurs on my PC with AMD Athlon (tm) II X4 640 Processor, Radeon HD5670 and both with the 32-bit and 64 bits versions of Ubuntu. Both versions work well on an older PC with AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4200 + processor, and an Nvidia integrated graphics card (C61 GeForce 6150SE nForce 430). Could it be a problem with the ATI driver?

• windows system (bootloader) partition accidently deleted during multiple installs

  After experimenting with multiple variations of backtrack and xbmcbuntu variations of Ubuntu with dual boot successfully, my windows partition became unrecognizable to grub. I used my windows boot CD to try to correct the problem. However, I deleted all partitions except for the NFTS one that contains my old windows install. (And, merged all other ones into that in hopes of getting back to the windows boot loader and out of grub) Now, all I get is a grub command prompt when I try and boot the system (how??? - I thought I deleted grub) And, now the windows boot disc doesn't even recognize the install. I've tried TRK to try and resolve the problem. Though I must admit ignorance in correctly using this utility. I've searched for other answers to this problem. Any help would be much appreciated.   I have a Wordpress multisite subfolder instance that I would like to track via Google Analytics. I guess optimally this would be a plugin which I could track each site in two places The Main Tracking Code which totals all traffic from the Multisite instance The Individual Site tracking code to see how each site specifically is doing. I think this plugin would have worked for me if I had a subdomain multisite instance: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-multisite-async/installation/ I know I can manually place the dual tracking code (http://www.markinns.com/articles/full/adding_two_google_analytics_accounts_to_one_page) but that would involve editing a theme and I have multiple sites using TwentyEleven template. I don't think I can edit the theme and not have it wreak havoc on the rest of the sites using TwentyEleven. So has anyone done this? Is there a a technique I'm missing? Is there a plugin available to do this in Multisite Subfolder installations? Is there a way to manually insert GA codes into themes which are used by multiple sites? Any insight is appreciated.

  I have mounted a Speedtest Mini server on a local LAMP, so I can test my LAN speeds effortlessly just by opening the URL with a Flash enabled web browser, the thing is, I want my iOS and Android devices to test with the LAN server too, not with the WAN, as I'm trying to measure LAN-Only performance. Is there a way so I can redirect the traffic intended to an specific external IP (The one of the real server) to my local server?. I know the servers IP as a short Wireshark analysis gave me the data, but still searching for a way to make that redirect. I have Jailbreak and root on my devices, so playing with system files is not a problem. I've tried mounting a proxy and making redirects by the hosts file and domain names, but it looks like Ookla's app relies on IP address only.

For example, my top four includes the following: No internet restrictions - Because honestly ever few hours I need a 15 min deload, which usually involves checking my gmail account and or browsing a few choice site. Personal office with a door - for obvious reasons Dual monitors - do people really develop software with one monitor still? Flexible hours - This could be interpreted in different ways, but basically I really appreciate that fact that I can roll into work at 7am, 11am or whenever and the time police aren't on my back. It is just understood that I will put in my 8 hours or more if needed and get my job done however that works out.

• Changing Workspaces changes active window

  I have a dual monitor setup, but I am sure it's the same with a single monitor. If I have two applications open, one is vim, the other is google chrome. Lets say the focus is on vim. If I switch to another workspace (ie. alt3) then switch back to that workspace (ie. alt1) now the focus is on google chrome. This process toggles indefinitely so long as I don't transition too quickly. Is there any way to prevent/disable this?
