    i have made a website and hosted in my local computer using a static ip where can i buy a domain name such as www.something.com such that it can redirect to my static ip so that if i m using a page like a http://localhost/index.jsp it can be accessed by http://www.something.com/index.jsp does it matter if i run the server locally or i buy a managed web hosting server from a big company if the traffic is low on my site?? thanks

    I notice two types of design used in web applications, some with a particular subdomain for users contents, and some with same URL structure for all the accounts. Ex: unique.domain.com and another_unique.domain.com for subdomains for sites like blogspot, wordpress, basecamp etc. while in the other approach domain.com/action1 and domain.com/action2 the content is shown according to the user logged in, but the URL is same for every user. What are main differences between both of these kind of design?

    Lately I have been using Chrome, but I am starting to think I should use FF. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various mainstream browsers (with an emphasis on Chrome and FF) when doing web development? Is it easier to start with clean code for a relatively conforming browser, and later add hacks/workarounds for acceptable display with less conforming browsers, or is it easier to work with a variety of browsers from the beginning, so we never have a page that's completely unacceptable with, for example, IE 6?

To minimize bandwidth utilization from mobile clients connecting to it, I'd like to instead have an intermediary site where the clients will be getting their data from, and minimizing hits to my service to once or twice a day only.     If considering to develop a web browser based game with multiple people and it's an RPG, click to move would probably be the only choice in movement right? Because if you were to use WASD and then ajax to the server every second that a player held on to the WASD key, that'd be pretty resource intensive if the server had to calculate the position and return the map image, assuming the next few screens are already buffered right? or is there a way to implement a WASD style and still have server side do all the calculations. (server side calculations to avoid cheating)

    I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

    I have some issues with my graphics card and I want to disable Hardware Acceleration for java apps. Everything that uses HA is displayed blurry. I've seen some tutorials on how to set this parameter -Dsun.java2d.d3d=false The problem is that the Java Control panel itself is using hardware acceleration and I cannot see anything in order to add this parameter. Edit: Went to java control panel in safe mode, added that parameter and problem continues..
