• Working environment

  I realise that this might not be the right place to ask questions about employment and that the question my raise debate etc. The company I work for recently decided that rather than having one web developer working on sites from a branch it would be better to make that person come into head office and work in the middle of a busy call centre. Also they're expecting the developer to answer the phone if it rings and take messages. Does anyone find that strange? Is it really the right place for a programmer to work? Thanks for the advice

• How to measure his own skill in a programming language? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How Can I Know Whether I Am a Good Programmer? As many programmers I have worked in several languages. While of course there are some that I am more at ease than other, I do not have a real way to precisely measure my skill in a specific language. So I thought of a system which allows me to help me with that. I am looking for 5 common criteria in programming languages, to which I will have a value from 1 (junior) to 4 ( Senior) to represent my skill. I however have no real idea of the criteria I should choose for that. Does anybody have suggestion ? Thanks.

• How many LOC/day "top" (google, MS, FB) engeneers produce? [closed]

  I know that 25 lines of lock free code is harder to do than 1000 lines of On_Click()... code but I wonder does anybody know in general what is the productivity of the average programmer in top tech companies. Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

• Good choice of languages for making a program that manages and organizes business? [closed]

  I've been reading questions and discussions on this website but haven't made an account to start talking or asking anything I had doubts in so please bare with a newbie here. What are specific languages that have are able to make a program that will record, and organize things such as hours, salaries, payments? Also solve business problems, mostly with payments, how much money there will be after interest, taxes and such. Anyway, I've been looking into COBOL, C++, Java, HTML, JavaScript, VB.NET and a couple more. Which ones should I focus on and look into more? I very much appreciate any answers. Thank you.

• What is your personal learning process? [closed]

  I just wanted to say hello and ask a few simple questions. I have recently dove into programming with c# and have been curious what everyone else's experiences have been with when learning and starting out. What are some things that you can say that really have made a difference in your understanding and usages of any particular language? I lurk several forums but for some reason have always just kept to myself, and I've realized today that I'm not fully utilizing my resources when it comes to interacting with the community. With that being said, I realize that everyone that is interested in programming inherently is a natural problem solver and would like also to ask you to share your process of learning. Are you the type to have a short term project to tackle a general set of problems you're likely to encounter? Or are you a type of programmer that practices by zeroing in on a specific few problems you would like to solve? Any reply will be greatly appreciated Thank you :)

• How come many of the AppShowdown apps aren't available in Ubuntu anymore?

  After upgrading to 12.10 I've noticed that I can't install some of the nice apps created for the AppShowdown, such as: Cuttlefish Blubphone (Lightread also came out quite late in 12.10) It seems such a waste having these great new apps added to the repository, only to exclude them in the first next version. I'm wondering why aren't these apps automatically available in a newer version of Ubuntu. Is it simply that the API is so different that it requires major rewrites and programmer activity or is it some bureaucratic reason? Are there any plans to improve this process?

• 12.04 to 12.10 upgrade failure

  In upgrading 12.04 to 12.10 via system upgrade when the system rebooted all I got was my desk-top without any command icons. Now all my files are locked into 12.10 and no way to retrieve them. I finally reinstalled 12.04 in a new partition but I don't have the knowledge on how to access 12.10 from it. Being a newbie with Linux I feel like I have all thumbs. I'd like to correct 12.10 but have to idea on what the problem is or how to access it. HELP!!!

  I may slowly be getting into teaching an Object-Orientated Programming class at my school in a year or two. I just graduated and work at my school as an Application Programmer. I'd first start off as a TA/grader and then slowly move into the Professor role. The class would be in Java. I always see resources on this fine site about HOW to program, but does anyone know any tips/tricks/resources on how to TEACH a programming class? It would be full of all different skills levels(but still semi-technical) so it would have to be a little more understandable than if it was just CS kids.

• Successful business proposal; How to negotiate with employer for bonuses on the project [on hold]

  I'm the lone programmer at a small business which is falling head-over-heels for a website proposal I wrote on a project they were considering. Next week is the company meeting where it will be formally presented to the owners, and if the project is accepted it could become a (relatively) huge revenue stream when finished. Despite all the buzz I have no financial stake in the success or failure of the project. I know I haven't been profitable and they can't pay me what I should be making. I'm also the only non-management employee with no way to earn a bonus, despite having one of the most demanding jobs in the office. I'd like to know if there's any resources or advice for programmers or employees to negotiate and get invested in a projects success. Just a way to guarantee if I prove my worth I can move up a rung or two.

  I am a asp.net mvc programmer and if I want to start a project I do this: I make a class library named Model for my models. I make a class library named Infrastructure.Repository for database processes I make a class library named Application for business logic layer And finally I make a MVC project for the UI. But now some things are confusing me. Am I using 3-tier programming? If yes so what is n-tier programming and which one is better? If no so what is 3-tier programming? Some where I see that the tiers namings are DAL and BIZ. Which one is correct according to the naming convention?

  Currently Work in IT support and am retraining in electrical engineering / electronics, I am also interested in Reverse Engineering which language would be best for Hardware RE, I have seen a few sources say C, C++ and Python? I am not familiar with Linux, but installed ubuntu to learn with. I am not a programmer far from it, but I can understand enough basic VB,Java and PHP to edit it for simple things. One of my immediate projects would be to learn to reverse engineer USB devices and write my own low level drivers, I know there are porting kits, but I really want to know it from the ground up.   I'm a beginner programmer and I am currently developing an application of my own, just for the fun of it and learning to program. I'm building it from scratch, because I think that in this way I will learn the most. I have stumbled upon MVC's and CMS, CodeIgniter really got my attention, and the basic use is very straight forward. But I do not understand the inner workings completely. So I have decided that it might be better to just develop from scratch and maybe return to codeIgniter later, was that good decision? Would it be better to use CodeIgniter and learn from that?

  I remember reading a post inquiring the basic/advanced skills required for embedded engineer works. The top comment divides the answer into two parts, the basic level/design level ,not purely coding(something like this...). Then another level : writing application(all about programming). • My screen is messed up, using GeForce 8400 GS NVIDIA

  My screen is all messed up. I can see everything beside my start menu and when I scroll up the mouse arrow goes up and out of the screen. It's not normal. Do I need to install "GeForce 8400 GS NVIDIA" drivers on my Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit machine? Please be very patient with me and use very simple words that a simple newbie could understand. • Prefer examples over Documentation. Is it a behavioral problem?

  Whenever I come across a new api or programming language or even simple Linux MAN pages, I always (ever since I remember) avoided then and instead lazily relied on examples for gaining understanding of new concepts. Subconsciously, I avoid documentation/api whenever it is not straight forward or cryptic or just plain boring. It's been years since I began programming and now I feel like I need to mend my ways as I now realize that I'm causing more damage by refraining from reading cryptic/difficult documentation as it is still a million times better than examples as the official documentation has more coverage than any example out there. So even after realizing that examples should be treated as "added" value instead of the "primary" source for learning. How do I break this bad habit as a programmer or am I over thinking? Any wisdom from fellow programmers is appreciated.

  I'm a newbie developer on WebTrends Analytics, although I have worked extensively on Adobe SiteCatalyst. Currently I want to integrate WebTrends with the web pages of a local project on my local JBoss EAP application server, so that I can run it locally and see how WebTrends work, along with how the Analytics reports show up. Later on, I may customize the reports data as per the project requirements. However, I can't find anywhere how I can start working on a local development process using a DEV account access. • Three20 TTLauncherView Tutorial?

  Hi, I'm attempting to use TTLauncherView from the Facebook Three20 project in my app, but I'm not having much luck (I'm a bit of a newbie at this).
