• Using Protocol Buffers in J2EE?

  Hello everyone, I have coded a server that uses Protocol Buffers in Java. A client talks to it using PB. I'd like to migrate the server code to J2EE and take advantage of the containers' built-in features like clustering. How can I have a service that receives PB messages and interprets them properly, and then gets them handled? I was thinking of a dedicated type of servlet, but how can it be done? I'm a J2EE newbie... I'm not familiar enough with J2EE application servers to know if there is a way to make that happen. P.S. I'm looking for a solution that uses TLS sockets directly. No overhead-causing middleman protocols like HTTP are welcome here. P.P.S. Open source solutions only please.

• When is calculating or variable-reading faster?

  hi, to be honest, I don't really know what the "small green men" in my cpu and compiler do, so I sometimes would like to know :). Currently I would like to know what's faster, so that I can design my code in a more efficient way. So for example I want to calclate something at different points in my sourcecode, when will it be faster to calculate it once and store it in a variable that's read and used for the next points it's needed and when is it faster to calculate it everytime? I think it's depending on how "complex" and "long" the calculation is and how fast then cache is, where variables are stored, but I don't have any clue what's faster :). Thanks for any reply to my tiny but important question! Andreas PS: perhaps it's important to know that I code in JAVA, but it's more a genral question.

• jTabbedPane opens different tab on loading

  Hey mates, First of all I'm using netbeans as my IDE and I don't know if this is causing it. When I run my program (even if I have build it and run the .jar) I think it selects the tab that was previously selected (before quiting). So if for example I close the app with the third tab selected, it starts up with that selected again. Is there a known solution for this? The selectedIndex property on the jTabbedPane is set to 0. Shouldn't this property be the default onLoad value? Thx in advance, Jimmy PS. BTW for some reason it didn't submit my question in Opera (?)

• Localize DisplayNameAttributes in ActionFilter?

  Is it possible to access the DisplayNameAttributes that are used on my ViewData.Model so I can Localize them before sending them to the view? Something like this: Public Void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext: filterContext) { foreach (DisplayNameAttribute attr in filterContext...) { attr.TheValue = AppMessages.GetLocazation(attr.TheValue); } } What I'm missing is how to access the attributes. Is this possible at all? P.S: We're using vb.net at my job and it's infiltrating my brain. So apologies if my C# is a tad off.

  Hi All I am trying to create a scripting language by myself (it doesn't have to be perfect - although that would be great if it was), mostly because i'm doing it for fun and to learn about how they're created etc. According to the answer over here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2439929/creating-a-scripting-language what I'm supposed to be looking into is this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xawadt95%28VS.85%29.aspx . • Can I use the TFS Object Model to interact with TFS via F#?

  I am looking for some quick ways to do some (more) complex queries across who has what checked out and things like that (eg. which files have 1 person checked out). I have been learning F# over the last year or so and saw the potential to use both the functional aspects of F# to quickly create some useful and more complex TFS commands. • Parsing XML using xml.etree.cElementTree

  I have the following XML in a string named 'xml': <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <Book> <Page> <Text>Blah</Text> </Page> </Book> I'm trying to get the value Blah out of it but I'm having trouble with xml.etree.cElementTree. I've tried the find() and findtext() methods but nothing. Eventually I did this: import xml.etree.cElementTree as ET ... root = ET.fromstring(xml) element = root.getchildren()[0].getchildren()[0] Element now equals the element, which is what I want (for this solution anyway), but how do I get the inner text from it? element.text does not work. Any ideas? PS: I am using Python 2.5 atm. As an extra question: what is a better way to parse xml strings in python?

• All the sudden my links not working in php

  hi guys, I have a page where all links where working properly but all the sudden some links are not working anymore. I am puzzling myself to undersand why. Nothing really changed. Maybe some css details. Is there anyone who can give a clue? Thank you for any help. me abou twhat might have happened. Francesco PS sorry forgot to say that looking at the source code the links are there and they work. In design view they just do nothing. They look like normal text.

• Is it possible to interop with Thunderbird using C#?

  Here's the latest hurdle in my ongoing quest to automate my job: All email in the company goes through 4 different email adresses, switching randomly back and forth (with a note attached in the global share: please set "keep email on server") All logic related to email is contained in a nice big Thunderbird profile, which gets copied back and forth to new machines; this includes sorting invoices into 5 different "folders", the list of VIP adresses to send notifications, and the VIP level of those customers I only need the contents of those folders (the attachments, anyway) The question: is there a way to ask Thunderbird for those attachments and lists from C#? Alternatively, can Outlook be set up to synchronize with Thunderbird? Where do I start reading? Ditching Thunderbird is not an option right now, I need to keep up with changes to the VIP list. P.S. I will set up a real email server right after Monkey saves me enough time to convince people about it.

• Linux, static lib referring to other static lib within an executable

  Hello, I am creating an application, which consists of two static libs and an executable. Let's call the two static libs: libusefulclass.a libcore.a And the application: myapp libcore instantiates and uses the class defined in libusefulclass (let's call it UsefulClass) Now, if I link the application in the following way: g++ -m64 -Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.5.4/lib -o myapp src1.o src2.o srcN.o -lusefulclass -lcore The linker complains about the methods in libusefulclass not being found: undefined reference to `UsefulClass::foo()' etc. I found a workaround for this: If UsefulClass is also instantiated within the source files of the executable itself, the application is linked without any problems. My question is: is there a more clean way to make libcore refer to methods defined in libusefulclass, or static libs just cannot be linked against eachother? TIA P.S.: In case that matters: the application is being developed in C++ using Qt, but I feel this is not a Qt problem, but a library problem in general.

I'm not interested in WAP/WML for this project. I'm building a ASP.Net 4 MCV 2 app and using MBDF What I'd like to know is how best to define this differentiation when using MBDF? Screen size, Javascript, SpportsTouchScreen etc. are all in MBDF along with others but I'm not sure where to draw the line and where the data is most accurate for the broad number of devices. • Sync Framework,LINQ, and my DAL

  I am creating a WPF app that needs to allow users to work in a temporary disconnected state and I plan to use a Local Database Cache. My question's are about my data access layer. Do you typically create the whole DAL to point at the Cache or both and create a switching mechanism? Is Entity's a good way to go for my DAL against the Cache? • Why array size in llvm created by llvm's internal tools is not good enough for llvm?

  I'm getting strange error message from the following code: ArrayType * arrayType = ArrayType::get(Type::getInt32Ty(ctx), 0); stack = builder->CreateAlloca(arrayType, ConstantArray::get(arrayType, std::vector<Constant *>())); This code compiles fine but it gives me llvm::Value* getAISize(llvm::LLVMContext&, llvm::Value*): Assertion `Amt-getType() == Type::getInt32Ty(Context) && "Malloc/Allocation array size is not a 32-bit integer!"' failed. during execution. What's interesting, is that I never said of what type array size should be, it was created somewhere inside helper functions. So I naturally see no good reason for assert to be there. But I must be doing something wrong anyway, can you help me spot the problem? Thanks in advance. PS. LLVM, as good as it is, lacking documentation tremendously.

• Resume recursive scp transfer (with rsync?)

  I was transferring several thousand files each ~1MB via scp and my connection was broken after the first 2k files or so. I wanted to know if there was a way to resume the recursive transfer w/o starting over. Something like $ scp -r [email protected]:/datafiles/ ./ ... Happy Transfer ... ... BREAK! ... $ rsync -P [email protected]:/datafiles/ ./ ... Continue transf... The problem is I can't seem to get the syntax correct if it is possible. Can anyone shed some light on if/how it can be done? PS. If you specify the slash after "datafiles" in the rsync line, does that transfer the directory or its contents? I saw conflicting comments when I googled.

  How to remove a blank page that gets added automatically after \part{} or \chapter{} in a book document class? I need to add some short text describing the \part. Adding some text after the part command results in at least 3 pages with an empty page between the part heading and the text: Part xx (empty) some text How to get rid of that empty page? P.S. Latex: How to remove blank pages coming between two chapters IN Appendix? is similar but it changes the behavior for the rest of the text while I need to remove the empty page for this one \part command only.

• Trying to cause java.lang.OutOfMemoryException

  Hi, I am trying to reproduce java.lang.OutOfMemoryException in Jboss4, which one of our client got, presumably by running the J2EE applications over days/weeks. I am trying to find a way for the webapp to spitout java.lang.OutOfMemoryException in a matter of minutes (instead of days/weeks). One thing come into mind is to write a selenium script and has the script bombards the webapps. One other thing that we can do is to reduce JVM heap size, but we would prefer not to do this, as we want to see the limit of our system. Any suggestions? ps: I don't have access to the source code.

• Testing C++ program with Testing classes over normally used classes

  Hi Guys, This will probably be a bot of a waffly question but ill try my best. I have a simple c++ program that i need to build testing for. I have 2 Classes i use besides the one i actually am using, these are called WebServer and BusinessLogicLayer. To test my own code i have made my own versions of these classes that feed dummy data to my class to test it functionality. I need to know a way of somehow, via a makefile for instance, how to tell the source code to use the test classes over the normally used classes. The test classes are in a different "tester" c++ file, and the tester c++ file also has its own header file. Regards Paul P.S.   Hello, I'm having trouble displaying the only date part of a datetime into a textbox using TextBoxFor<,(expression, htmlAttributes). The model is based on Linq2SQL, field is a DateTime on SQL and in the Entity model. Failed : <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.dtArrivalDate, String.Format("{0:dd/MM/yyyy}", Model.dtArrivalDate))%> Ps : this trick seems to be depreciated, any string value in the object htmlAttribute is ignored. Failed : [DisplayFormat( DataFormatString= "{0:dd/MM/yyyy}" )] public string dtArrivalDate { get; set; } I would like to store and display the date part only on the details/edit view without the "00:00:00" part.   I have created data sources from my objects in my project, some of which have other objects as members. When I want to bind a some objects to a data grid I would like to display some of the values from the member objects in the data grid as well but the examples I have come across seem to use an entire other datagrid or controls to display these member object values. How can I combine these values into one data grid? (Preferably without creating a wrapping class) Can I achieve this with LINQ somehow? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks P.S. • Replicate behavior of Android browser

  Hi all, I am writing for Android, and I can't figure out how to replicate the effect of the Android browser where the progress bar is at the top of the screen, with the webview below it, yet when you scroll down, the bar scrolls with the page. I've tried placing both the webview and the progress bar into a scrollview, but when I do that, the webview becomes completely unresponsive and will not load (or respond to any commands, for that matter). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! P.S., I'm using the Eclipse IDE, and I'd like to to continue using the 1.5 SDK if possible to maintain backwards compatibility (and just to be able use my own application -- my phone isn't getting 2.1 for a couple of months).
