• SQL 2008 R2 replication error: The process could not connect to Distributor

  I have two servers running SQL 2008 R2 Standard, each with an instance named "MAIN". I have a small test database on my primary server (one table, 13 rows) that I want to replicate to a second server as a proof-of-concept for some larger databases that I want to replicate. I set up the primary server to be a publisher and distributor, and set the database to do transactional replication. I copied the data to the second server via a backup/restore, not via a snapshot (which I'll have to do with the larger databases due to database size and limited bandwidth). I followed the instructions here: http://gnawgnu.blogspot.com/2009/11/sql-2008-transactional-replication-and.html Now on the subscriber, I go under Replication / Local Subscriptions / Right click / Properties on my subscription to the DB. The status of the last synchronization shows a status of: "The process could not connect to Distributor 'PRIMARYSERVER\MAIN'." Data IS replicating from the primary to the secondary. Any record I add on the primary shows up on the secondary server within seconds. Is the Distributor part of the Snapshot system that I'm not using, or is it part of the transaction replication stuff? • sharepoint crawl not indexing main site

  Guys I'm having some strange search issues' going on with my main portal application. First off let me give you a little back ground on the problem web app. Our Sharepoint environment was originally set up by a consultant that did not follow best practices. She used one web app to house our companies' intranet site, ssp, and mysites. Since than I have provisioned a new ssp that I have segmented correctly I moved all of our other sites over to the new ssp with out any problems . However, I could not assign the main portal app to the new ssp since the portal app housed the ssp site collection. So I deleted the ssp site collection after that I deleted the ssp and assigned the portal app to my new ssp. Now this is where the problem starts when I attempt to crawl this application the crawl starts than stops 5 seconds later with a status of success also it reports that 1 item was successfully crawled. The funny thing is the main portal app has nearly 30000 items. I have tracked the problem down to the web app if I create a test web app than restore the content I have no problem crawling all 30000 items. Also all of my other web apps that use the same ssp have no problem completing crawls. I don't see anything in the ULS logs or server 2003's event viewer. Also I'm using a separate dedicated index server that's configured to crawl itself via host file configuration. I would like to fix this problem with out having to recreate our main portal site due to the fact that we have several custom code modifications where DLL's were registered to the IIS bin folder also I don't even want to get into the Silverlight mods that were done. • Log shipping on select tables.

  I know I am most likely using incorrect terminology so please correct me if I use the wrong terms so I can search better. We have a very large database at a client's site and we would like to have up to date copies of some of the tables sent across the internet to our servers at our office. We would like to only copy a few of the tables because the bandwidth requirement to do log shipping of the entire database (our current solution) is too high. Also replication directly to our servers is out of the question as our servers are not accessible from the internet and management does not want to do replication (more on that later). One possible Idea we had is to do some form of replication on the tables we need to another database on the same server and do log shipping of that second smaller database but management is concerned that the clients have broken replication (it was between two servers on their internal network however) on us in the past and would like to stay away from it if possible. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. If using some form of replication is the only solution, I am not against replication, I just need compelling arguments to convince management to do it. This is to be set up on multiple sites that are running either Sql2005 or Sql2008 we will have both versions on our end to restore the data to so that is not a issue. Thank you.

• Master File Table Corrupt, any way to save data?

  hi. I've used search, but none of the results match my problem so I didn't have to ask separate question. I've Installed Windows 7 RTM recently and since then partitions located on one of my HDDs have gone "crazy". They used to "freeze" and didn't open in explorer for some time (minute or two, usually), sometimes all partitions of the drive wouldn't show until reboot and finally, one of those partitions started showing "disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" warning, it appeared in Disk Management window as RAW and chkdsk showed "mft corrupt". There were no important data on the partition and I didn't have enough time to analyze the problem at the moment, so I just reformatted it and ran antivirus scan on system. After that problem settled for some time, but yesterday the problematic HDD vanished again from the system. After reboot chkdsk identified mft of four partitions corrupt and now they are all in same conditions as the above mentioned one. But the difference is that the files stored in them are extremely important. and just for info: I upgraded from Win7 build 7077, but had some performance issues, so I reformatted system drive and installed fresh Win7 RTM on it. I've downloaded TestDisk and it shows all the partitions marked as NTFS (not RAW) and my knowledge of the program wasn't sufficient to obtain any other info from it :-) and the images that could help describe the problem (sorry, I'm not allowed to post images and more than one hyperlink): http:// img22.imageshack.us/img22/5909/chkdskz.jpg http:// img198.imageshack.us/img198/5576/computeray.jpg I'm interested, is there a way to let me restore the MFT or just access files so I can backup them before reformatting the drive. After clicking that EasyBCD told me to add Win 8 entry via Add Entry Menu so i did. After restart, win 8 would not start. Neither would recovery F11. Attempts i made to Restore : Ran boot-repair from ubuntu live cd several time. Used Win8 system recovery disc created via virtualbox with win 8 preview iso. Automated repair from Win8 system recovery disc Ran following commands from cmd started from Win8 system recovery disc bootrec /fixmbr Result : Success message bootrec /rebuildbcd Result : after hitting (Y) "The requested system device cannot be found" System refresh started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that device is locked. System reset started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that required partition or device is missing or not accessible. Used automated repair from EasyRE disc. It gave success message. Used Fix boot problem from Macrium reflect winPE repair disc. Copied Recovery partition to usb. Booting from usb gave this error Your PC needs to be repaired. Error Code : 0XC000000f Press Enter to try again Press F8 for Startup Settings F8 & Enter does nothing I cannot install WIn7 or Win 8, error it gives : "windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

• Windows 7 System File Checker (sfc) not working

  I have a strange problem with Windows 7 RTM. I'm running Ultimate 64-bit edition. Whenever I run sfc /scannow I get this error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. My research so far has told me that I need to set the Windows Module Installer and Windows Installer services' startup types to Manual. They already were, so I manually started those services and tried again. No luck. I've even booted into my Windows 7 repair disc and tried running sfc /scannow from that. All I get is this: A repair operation is already pending. Restart and try again. History: I'm trying to run sfc because I am unable to open any images in Windows Photo Viewer. Whenever I try, I get the error "Class not registered." I believe the problem started after I installed Gladinet, but I can't be sure. I've uninstalled Gladinet, but the problem remains. System Restore was disabled (yes, I know I'm stupid - you don't have to remind me). Please help. Thanks.

• Does migrating 2 domain controllers between 2 datacentre requires both virtual machines to be shut down at the same time?

  I was attempting to migrate 2 virtual machines that are domain controllers between 2 datacentres running ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.1. I was advised to shut down both domain controller at the same time during the migration process. This is to avoid USN Rollback and other replication issues. The following are the steps that I was planning to perform: 1. Shutdown both DC. 2. Copy both VMs files across to new datacentre using Veeam FastSCP (connection to both vCentre through IP address instead of hostname) 3. Power them up at new datacentre. 4. Configure Network interface/DNS/DHCP for both DCs in new datacentre I have tried to use Veeam FastSCP rather than VMware Standalone Converter is because its copying rather than converting. Someone also suggested that I use backup and restore app like Veeam backup and replication software. Sounds like a simple job, but after shutting down both DCs, the transfer rate using FastSCP is so slow registering only 1KB/s as oppose to the normal 1MB/s (or more). When that attempt to transfer failed, I tried to cold clone both DCs resulted in the both ESX hosts get disconnected. I have tried troubleshooting by referring to this - VMware KB - Diagnosing an ESX Server that is Disconnected or Not Responding in VirtualCenter It seems that the DNS being down is the caused of all unusual occurrence. The moment I powered up the DCs via VMware console command, the ESX host were able to connect to the vCentre again. How can I avoid such a pitfall again? Am I doing it correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

• SQL Server Subscriber Migration

  We're currently have one way transaction replication from a SQL Server 2005 OLTP publisher/distrbituor to two subscribers (one SQL 2005 and the other SQL2008 R2). Replication security is via the SQL Agents' domain service account (the same account is used on all boxes). The SQL2008R2 subscriber is used for BI purposes and hosts a database that has a subset of the Production publisher database tables, with different security and indexes. We need to migrate this BI subscriber to a newer box with more performant hardware. The plan is as follows: Stop replicating to the BI box (continue replicating to the other subscriber). Backup all databases on the BI box (including system databases). Restore all databases (including master in single user mode) to the new BI box (this has SQL Server 2008R2 already installed). Take the old BI box off the network and shut it down. Rename and Re-IP the new BI box to be the same as the old box. Switch replication back on. Are there any flaws in this approach?

• Windows 7 Startup fails after installation

  I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate a week ago. Yesterday I've noticed that the SP1 update is available. After installation of SP1 the computer failed to startup, and had shown a black screen. I couldn't even go to safe mode and F8 didn't help. After some fixing attempts including system restore, startup repair, bootmgr & BCD rebuilding from CMD, I have decided to reinstall Windows (after all, it's only a week old) After the successful installation, I have decided to first install all available updates before I continue. So after the updates download & installation, the computer rebooted. And now I didn't see the black screen again - but in the "Starting Windows..." screen the logo didn't appear and the system didn't startup. Here I could go to safe mode selection window, but it didn't work either ("Loading Windows Files" but nothing). I've also tried: I thought that the CD was corrupted, so I've used a fresh new disk of Windows, tried x86 & x64 versions, the same symptoms, no change. Resetted the BIOS to default, no change. Memory diagnostic HDD diagnostic Restarted Windows WITHOUT INSTALLING UPDATES, but it had the same symptom, so maybe Windows Update is not the case?! I've tried installing it so many times - that I am simply stuck - I can't "reinstall Windows, because it is corrupted...". Maybe the HDD is corrupted? I've also checked it and didn't find a problem.

  I have several (new) systems on which I had to install SLES11 on. However, after a few (though not every) reboots, the system hangs during the boot sequence. It will only continue after I physically press a key on the keyboard. • SQL Server 2005 to 2008 DB attach elp please!

  I have SQL Server 2005 Standard on my personal machine. I created a very big DB about 21 gb. I made a backup and transferred the .bak file via an ftp program to my dedicated server. I have SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition on my dedicated server. I tried restore the transferred .bak file but got an error. I posted the error on here and was told the database is corrupt. How? I don't know. The connection was not interrupted during the ftp transfer. The DB works on my own machine. So then I detached the db on my own machine and transferred the mdf and ldf file to my dedicated server through ftp again and again there were not interruptions. Now I try to attach the db and get this error: The header for file 'DB.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5172) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=10.00.1442&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=5172&LinkId=20476 I already wasted 21 gb transferring the .bak file. The db can detach and attach fine on my machine in sql server 2005 but not SQL server 2008 on my server.

• keyboard intermittently stops working, even after reinstalling windows 7; possibly a Chrome issue?

  My keyboard intermittently stops working. Sometimes a couple of keys will work, but usually none. Sometimes if I mash a couple of the ctrl+alt+windows type keys randomly for a bit, the keyboard will let me type one more letter before stopping again. Sometimes the keys will open a program menu, but usually not. I have even completely wiped my machine and reinstalled windows 7; the problem continues. Specs: Intel iMac (early 2006, 2.0GHz, 2MB RAM, 240GB HD) running ONLY Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit (NOT through boot camp) and using a USB keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II.) *Unplugging & reconnecting keyboard does NOT fix it. *Connecting a different keyboard does NOT fix it. That one won't work, either. *Drivers are up-to-date. Removing and reinstalling drivers does NOT fix it. *Restarting the computer does NOT fix it. In fact, when the Windows logon screen appears, they keyboard won't work, and neither will the icon to pull up the on-screen keyboard. Otherwise my mouse can click around just fine. I can only log onto a non-password protected account. *Generally, logging into as different Windows user fixes it. I can then log back on to my main user account and continue work for a few hours until it happens again. *Clearing my Chrome browsing data stopped the problem from recurring for a week or so. *I use Avira free antivirus software, and repeated scans turn up nothing fishy. *I have already REINSTALLED Windows 7 (not just a restore.) The problem returned after 2 days of use. The only thing I suspect is something in Google Chrome -- I used my google account to reload all my previous Chrome extensions, saved data, etc. (Chrome Extensions Installed: AdBlock, Better Google Tasks, DropBox, FB Photo Zoom, Google Mail Checker, StayFocusd.) Any ideas? Any at all?

Today i want to test my backup possibility, so i restore the backup data to another location not original location. I dismount the database and then delete the all files under the database location. last I copy back the files from back up location to database location. When i want to mount the database. • Windows 7 - All Icons Missing, Explorer Progress Bar Never Finishes, Libraries Gone

  since yesterday i've had three issues which all arose at the same time. windows 7 x64, i7 2.8ghz 12gb ddr3 1 - my libraries, favorites, drives are missing...basically the entire sidebar is gone. http://i.imgur.com/m8pRQ.png. yet when i open a dialog, my libraries and drives are back to normal ONLY for the dialog. i tried Restore Default Libraries. it works one time, but when i open libraries again i go back to the empty mess. restarting the computer temporarily fixes the problem. 2 - in the explorer window that's showing libraries, when i navigate to a certain folder i get an unending progress bar (the kind that turns the address bar green). yesterday when the problem started, i was saving a file to this folder. the program writing the file crashed during the write and i believe that's what caused the problem. i have sugarsync backing up that folder and when i restarted the computer sugarsync informed me that its database was corrupted, so i had to uninstall and reinstall the software. 3 - icons are missing. the Rebuild Icon Cache did not fix this. http://i.imgur.com/r9pgo.png restarting the computer temporarily fixes these problems, but when i open the directory with the initial write problem, everything stops working. edit: i should note that i did a chkdsk /f and it repaired problems. i also did the thing that verifies then restores windows files (can't remember the command now), which reported that everything was normal.

• How do I permanently delete /var/log/lastlog?

  My /var/log/lastlog file is huge. I know it's really only a few kilobytes, but tar isn't smart enough to know that, so when I image a virtual machine, my restore fails because it thinks I'm trying to load more data than I have capacity on my disk. I want to delete /var/log/lastlog and stop any and all logging to the file. I'm aware of the security implications. This logging needs to stop to preserve my backup strategy. I've made a change to /etc/pam.d/login which I was told would disable logging to /var/log/lastlog, but it does not appear to work as /var/log/lastlog keeps growing. # Prints the last login info upon succesful login # (Replaces the `LASTLOG_ENAB' option from login.defs) #session optional pam_lastlog.so Any ideas? EDIT For anyone interested, I use Centrify Express to authenticate my users via LDAP. Centrify Express is "free", but one of the drawbacks is that I can't manage user UIDs via LDAP, so they are given a dynamic UID when they login to a server. Centrify picks some crazy high UID values (so they don't conflict with local users on the server, presumably). /var/log/lastlog is indexed by UID, and grows to accommodate the largest UID on the system. • Where did my backup files go? Can they be recovered?

  I just purchased a Western Digital Essential SE 1TB external hard drive from Best Buy at their recommendation. I then exchanged it for a Toshiba Canvio (I think that was the name). I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q898. The Canvio locked up my computer and rewrote some kind of OS file, and erased all the restore points as well as the system image backup (according to Best Buy) just by plugging it in for the first time. Never even got to the install part or anything -- plugged it in and fried my computer. They spent about an hour and a half on my computer and got it back to a somewhat working condition and gave me access to my files. So now they say I have to back it up using my recovery disk and rewriting my OS. Enter the Essential. Brought it home last night, plugged it in and installed everything. Works perfect, no problems. Backed up everything on it. I unplugged and plugged it twice to make sure that everything was on it. Essential told me it had both the HDD and SSD backed up. So I reinstalled my OS. Plugged the Essential in and everything loads right up. Went to retrieve my files and the Western Digital has nothing on it. It shows all my music, pics, ETC. as still being on my computer and needing to be backed up, but since there are no files on my computer now. Where is this information coming from and where did my files go? It's about 810GB worth of files I've amassed over several years. Is there any way to recover data from this? I plan to contact Western Digital and Best Buy, just thought I would check here too. Any advice will be appreciated as a lot of these files are invaluable to me.

  I was in the midst of what seemed to be a successful upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate when there was a brief blackout. The upgrade failed and Windows reverted back to Vista. Now Vista is very slow to boot, has problems waking back-up from inactivity and quickly loses it's wireless connection. The wake-up problem manifests itself as the mouse is clearly shown on a black screen but I have no access to the Desktop or Taskbar or Explorer. Even Alt-Ctrl-Delete doesn't seem to work. No task menu, no reboot. Hitting the reset button reboots the machine with the usual Black Screen warnings offering Safe Mode. I tried to do a system restore to a point before the upgrade. That didn't seem to work. My guess is that my system is a mutant with parts of Vista and parts of 7 crashing each other. I would like avoid a clean install if at all possible to avoid reinstalling other software. What should I try now? My thoughts are: My a system back-up to lock the computer in place Trying a second 7 upgrade If that appears to be working make another back-up If not reload back-up and try a repairing Vista from DVD. If that appears to work make another back-up, let system stablize about a week then try 7 install again If that doesn't work are there any other options to try before settling for a clean install? Another complication, I am doing this by "remote control". I'm traveling with my job and I'll be talking my son through it over the phone. (Kind of like the landing the 747 cliche from all the 70's adventure shows!) So is there a way of simplifying the steps? Thanks Ted

  I botched a transfer of a VM from one harddisk to the other. Now I'm left with the base vdi and a whole bunch of snapshots. My steps Copied old VM directory over to new HDD Deleted old VM and added new VM using using Machine-add and providing the old XML file Couldn't add base vdi file due to conflict so changed the UUID of base vdi with VBOXMANGE.EXE internalcommands sethduuid Attempt to rollback to a snapshot, but it seems the VM is looking for the snapshots on the old HDD (which is formatted and gone) This is the error (networked is the name): Failed to restore the snapshot networked of the virtual machine lfs. Could not open the medium 'H:\vm\ft.vdi'. VD: error VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND opening image file 'H:\vm\ft.vdi' (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Medium Interface: IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd} The old HDD was drive H: the new one is drive N: How can I modify the snapshots/VM to look in N:\vm\ft.vdi for the base vdi? I've already set the default settings in VirtualBox in general (default vm/vm snapshot location). Or if not that how can I merge the old snap shot with the base vdi given that the only things that have changed is the base vdi's UUID? Thanks

• Imac g5 with no OS nor CD drive

  What I want: Ubuntu on a g5 Imac. What I have: An empty PC (Intel g5 17" Imac) with broken CD drive. Its model is A1173. This PC with Ubuntu 12.04 and an old Vista partition. a usb flash drive. Problems: No CD means the only boot Drive I could use is USB. There are no BIOS on Macs so I can't set boot settings or even see if it detects my USB drive. When I start the machine and press ALT the first and only thing I see is an old corrupted winXP partition and not a single option or additional information. So assuming blindly that the Mac hardware/firmware works normally, I don't have any Mac OS to use any of the tools that I found on different tutorials for building a bootable .img drive for macs. I can't find much software on Linux/Windows to substitute to those tools, for example among others converting an .iso file (win/linux) to .img (mac I guess). Which makes me think that the scenario where someone like me has Mac hardware but no Mac OS is extremely rare. So other than finding someone that has a Mac I have no solution. So I ask what would you do? the only thing is it should not involve any money (I know mac soft is rarely free) which also excludes getting any MacOS unless I can use a free macos.img for VM or restore the original Mac for free. • Display issue with fresh install of windows server 2012

  I installed windows server 2012 last night on my home "server". I use server loosely. From the get go I had display and graphic issues. The image was fuzzy and jumbled up during the install. This continued once booted into the install. I did installed Server 2012 twice now as the first time, I only installed "core". I know this is not a busted graphics card because it worked fine in Win7, during boot, and fine in "core" mode. Once booted into "GUI" install of Server 2012, the image was messed up again. To make things even more weird, the windows "loading" screen looks fine. Once the login screen appears the image is fuzzy and jumbled. My guess was that it was a driver issue. I did try to install the win8 x64 drivers from nvidia. This caused the system to become unbootable and I had to restore to a previous working point and uninstall the driver. I did try two different monitors and cables. Also both ports on the back of the video card. I did manage to get RDP running and that works fine. I rarely work directly on this machine but it would be nice to have the option back. Geforce 210, AMD 4600+, 4 gigs of ram.

• How do I cancel windows server 2003 repair install?

  System: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Scenario: NTDS db is corrupt and all attempts to fix with esentutl fail. Ran chkdsk which seemed to repair disk error and give access to the ntds.dit file but still esentutl fails. (Attached the drive to a different server to run the esentutl) Error: Access to source database '[path to copy of]/ntds.dit' failed with Jet error -1022. Operation terminated with error -1022 (JET_errDiskIO, Disk IO error) after 0.170 seconds. This error occurs on any disk I cpoy the files to including original location in C:\WINDOWS\NTDS\ Now enter the "Stupid!" and "what was I thinking!?" part (must be the late hour...) Stupid: No updated backup - after using a backup I get a network password error in the lsass error. what was I thinking!?: Started the install repair from the original CD but the install fails since the AD fails to start. Now I cant boot into any mode (safe mode, AD restore etc) nor complete the repair install. I would really like to avoid a fresh install since I have the Exchange server on this DC and would rather migrate to a new server than have to start from scratch. Thanks!

• Using awk to split text file every 10,000 lines

  I have a large gzip'd text file. I'd like to something like: zcat BIGFILE.GZ | awk (snag 10,000 lines and redirect to...)|gzip -9 smallerPartFile.gz the awk part up there, I basically want it to take 10,000 lines and send it to gzip and then repeat until all lines in the original input file are consumed. I found a script that claims to do this, but when I run it on my files and then diff the original to the ones that were split and then merged, lines are missing. So, something is wrong with the awk part and I'm not sure what part is broken. Here's the code. • Restoring MBR, partition table, and boot sector of memory card without data loss ("USBC")

  Abstract I have a FAT32 memory card that when inserted into a computer causes Windows to prompt to format it. The card is definitely not supposed to be blank and has a bunch of files on it. Symptoms Using a hex-editor/disk-viewer, I examined the card and found that several sectors/clusters have been overwritten with something that has a signature of USBC at the start of the sector. Specifically, the master boot record (and partition table) is gone (hence Windows thinking the card is blank and needing to be formatted), as are the boot sectors (they have the USBC signature and a volume label of NO NAME and partition type of FAT32). Fortunately, it looks like both copies of the FAT are almost entirely intact (a few FAT entries at the start of a cluster here and there seem to be overwritten by USBC). The root directory is also nearly intact—I can see the volume label entry and subdirectory listings, but one sector is overwritten. (There are no more instances of USBC after the last one in the FAT2.) Hypothesis These observations seem to indicate some sort of virus that erases a few key filesystem structures, and then overwrites a few extra sectors here and there. Googling it seems to corroborate the idea of a virus, except that others report a file called USBC which does not apply here, and in fact, could not be possible since there is no filesystem to even see files. I cannot find any information about a virus with these symptoms, nor a removal tool. (I can't help but wonder if it is actually due to an autorun virus prevention tool.) Question I can likely fix the FAT corruption since they are mostly contiguous chains and maybe even the lost sector of the root directory, but does anyone know of a convenient way to restore or (re)create the MBR/partition table and boot sectors (without formatting or overwriting the data)?
