• Grasp Controller, Does it really need a UI to exist?

  I have a Domain model which can be in multiple states, and if these states go out of a given range it the domain should automatically react. For example I have a Car which is made of multiple things which have measurements the Engine - Rev counter and Temperature the Fuel Tank - capacity Is is plaseable to have a CarStateController, which observses the engine and the tank, and if these states go out of range IE the engine temperature goes above range, turn the engine fan on?? There is no UI, (you could argue it would show a light on the dash board, but for this case it does not) is this a valid use of a GRASP controller pattern? if not what is this CarStateController Called? Or have I completely missed the point and this should be the State Pattern?

• uneven illuminated images

  How to get rid of uneven illumination from images, that contain text data, usually printed but may be handwritten? It can have some spots of lights because the light reflected while making picture. I've seen the Halcon program's segment_characters function that is doing this work perfectly, but it is not open source. I wish to convert an image to the image that has a constant illumination at background and more dark colored regions of text. So that binarization will be easy and without noise. The text is assumed to be dark colored than it's background. Any ideas?

• Visual Studio detaches from application as soon as debugging starts

  I have a web application that I've always been able to run in Visual Studio and it debugs just fine (breakpoints work, I can pause execution, etc). Recently, the behavior changed suddenly, and a few things happen: I start debugging, it lauches IE and loads the application, but after a few seconds (sometimes the page hasn't even displayed yet), Visual Studio acts as if debugging has stopped - I'm able to edit code in VS again, and the "Play" button on the toolbar is enabled. The application continues to run in the IE window just spawned, but I'm not attached to it During this few seconds that VS is "debugging", because it detaches, my breakpoints show as hollow - as if I'm set to "Release" mode and they won't be hit. In fact, I have a breakpoint set in Page_Load, and it skips right by. I've checked, and I'm set to debug mode, though the compile mode dropdown is missing from my toolbar (I checked in the build properties to ensure I was in debug mode). Can anybody shed some light here?

• Oracle database connection string PLSQL compatibility

  Hi I'm using an application called Logi info. it requires a connection string to my oracle database. the connection works fine but in order to configure the connection to recive ref cursors from the database, I apparently need to add PLSQLRSet=1 to the end of the string. when I do that I recieve an error "invalid connection string" Here is my connection string without plsqlrset=1 Data Source=SID; User Id=username; Password=password; My concern is that PLSQLRSet=1 might be .NET paramater only. Can anyone shed some light on the issue. Thanks

• Changing the Settings item description text color in Android?

  I use a Samsung Vibrant, and one of the annoying bits that Samsung tossed on their TouchWiz skin was changing the color of the Settings menu item description text from white (AOSP) to light blue. This looks okay as long as the skin is bluey-themed, but most ROMs seem to be leaning toward Gingerbread clones... doesn't look good with the green. How can I change that settings description font color back to white, or even the orange it is in actual Android 2.3? Which xml file is the color property located in? It seems to also spread to all apps you install, too... the blue text.

  Hi, I have a Windows Phone 7 application with the following listbox and every item contains 2 textblocks and a HyperlinkButton. <ListBox.ItemTemplate> In the ViewModel constructor I have the following code: GetCommand = new RelayCommand(() ={some code}); where GetCommand is a property : public RelayCommand GetCommand { get; private set; } My problem is that GetCommand = new RelayCommand(() ={some code}); is not executing when I press the button. I must say that if dont place the HyperlinkButton insise the itemTemplate, everything works fine. • What is lisp used for today and where do you think it's going ?

  Never been a lisp user, so don't take me as too dense while reading this. But what is lisp used for today ? I know there are several variants of the language in existence, at least one which will keep it alive commercially for a while longer (AutoLisp, VisualLisp - pretty big support from Autodesk) ... but I don't meet everyday people using it. So if you can shed some light on the matter - what is it's primary target market nowadays ? And what do you believe its future will be ... will it become just another support language in few apps, or is it going somewhere ? Also, apart from "an editor whose name shall not be spoken" what other apps keep it as a support language ?

• Assigning a material in Blender with a script

  Question: How do you assign a material with a script to an object in blender? Info: I have this script to import a proprietary model type of mine that is basically a star map with object consisting of a single vertex. in order to make them look like stars and be visible they are all going to have a halo material assigned to them. I'm figuring out how to make this material and give it the values just fine, but I can't seem to get it to assign. I tried the most obvious thing which was: objectName.setMaterial(materialName) but that did nothing. and when i would take an object that had a material and call the getMaterial function on it, it would return nothing. there is something I'm missing here, can some one shed some light on it?   I've got the above odd error message that I don't understand "value Parsers is not a member of package scala.util.parsing.combinator". I'm trying to learn Parser combinators by writing a C parser step by step. I started at token, so I have the classes: import util.parsing.combinator.JavaTokenParsers object CeeParser extends JavaTokenParsers { def token: Parser[CeeExpr] = ident } abstract class CeeExpr case class Token(name: String) extends CeeExpr This is as simple as I could make it. The code below works fine, but if I uncomment the commented line I get the error message given above: object Play { def main(args: Array[String]) { //val parser: _root_.scala.util.parsing.combinator.Parsers.Parser[CeeExpr] CeeParser.token val x = CeeParser.token print(x) } } In case it is a problem with my setup, I'm using scala 2.7.6 via the scala-plugin for intellij.   assuming a yield of 3 per hour, that's 83000 hours. 8 hours a day makes 10,500 days, divide by thirty to get 342 mythical man months. I call them mythical because writing 125 tests per person per week is unreal. can any wise soul out there on SO shed some light on what sort of mythical men write unreal quantities of tests for large software projects? thank you. update chrisw thinks there are only 20k tests (check out his explanation below). PS I'd really like to hear from folks who have worked on projects with large test bases

• Differences setting content in Forms.WebBrowser control via DocumentText vs. Url

  If I generate some HTML and have it in a string and then say: myWebBrowser.DocumentText = string; It seems to work just fine, except none of the images load (I get the broken image graphic). If, however, I write the string to a file and then say: myWebBrowser.Url = new Uri("file://myfile.html"); Everything works just fine. My question is, what's going on under the covers here that is different? I've verified in both cases that the path to the images (via RClick-View Source) is the same and that all the images do, indeed, exist. In both cases the HTML is exactly the same. Any light that could be shed on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

• How to invert rows and columns using a T-SQL Pivot Table

  I have a query that returns one row. However, I want to invert the rows and columns, meaning show the rows as columns and columns as rows. I think the best way to do this is to use a pivot table, which I am no expert in. Here is my simple query: SELECT Period1, Period2, Period3 FROM GL.Actuals WHERE Year = 2009 AND Account = '001-4000-50031' Results (with headers): Period1, Period2, Period3 612.58, 681.36, 676.42 I would like for the results to look like this: Desired Results: Period, Amount Period1, 612.58 Period2, 681.36 Period3, 676.42 This is a simple example, but what I'm really after is a bit more comlex than this. I realize I could produce theses results by using several SELECT commands instead. I'm just hoping someone can shine some light on how to accomplish this with a Pivot Table or if there is yet a better way.

• Where can I find up-to-date information / walkthroughs on VS 2010 deployment?

  I am looking for information on deploying my web app to our test server. Having heard Hanselman say this is something you can do within VS 2010 easily I set out too find information on exactly how to do this but can not seem to find anything. Ignoring the fact that most of the blog posts / articles are over a year old, there just seems to be no clear step by step information on how to do this. • Google Maps 'API key' problem

  I finally got this google maps page working however, it seems that everybody except the client can see it? They're saying the following error message appears "This web site needs a different Google Maps API key. A new key can be generated at..." Here's the page: http://www.sportingemporium.com/google-map.htm When I sign-up for a new key Goggle gives me exactly the same one that I am already using! • SocketAsyncEventArgs and buffering while messages are in parts

  C# socket server, which has roughly 200 - 500 active connections, each one constantly sending messages to our server. About 70% of the time the messages are handled fine (in the correct order etc), however in the other 30% of cases we have jumbled up messages and things get screwed up. We should note that some clients send data in unicode and others in ASCII, so that's handled as well. Messages sent to the server are a variable length string which end in a char3, it's the char3 that we break on, other than that we keep receiving data. Could anyone shed any light on our ProcessReceive code and see what could possibly be causing us issues and how we can solve this small issue (here's hoping it's a small issue!) Code below:

But when the query below is executed I get the following exception: System.NotSupportedException: Unable to create a constant value of type 'Closure type'. Only primitive types ('such as Int32, String, and Guid') are supported in this context. • Finding the best jquery plugins

  Is there a resource for finding the "best" jquery plugins, or at least just the most used ones? For example, I wanted to find a menu jquery plugin but when I goto the jquery website there are so many to look through and I don't see a way to see how popular each one is. For ruby there's the http://ruby-toolbox.com/ which lists many plugins, how popular they are, info about them, etc. Is there something similar or at least some way to filter through all the jquery plugins? EDIT 1: To shed some more light on this - the "most popular" link on the jquery page is useless. I can't find a way to search through it but even worse, the ratings don't seem to mean much. Ex - the first item, in other words the most popular plugin in that list has 5 stars and TWO votes. Doesn't seem like a very reliable resource to me.

• OpenNETCF.Net.Ftp Behaving Flaky

  I tried posting on their boards (authors of this library), however it literally takes months for them to reply when it comes to the free software (can't blame them). But anyways I have found that this library is behaving weirdly - for instance, a major problem with my application is when someone is trying to sign in (through FTP), they provide a correct login and mistype the password, no reply is received from FTP server. I tried doing the same from command window just to verify that it's not the FTP server's fault; and FTP commands were received instantaneously. It almost looks as though this library eats the commands. The same actions often times will yield different results. Can anyone recommend a stable, reliable library to use with Compact framework? Or shed some light on this issue...?

• Adding Colours (Colors) Together like Paint (Blue + Yellow = Green, etc)

  I'm making an iOS game using cocos2d libraries. Lets say you have two objects that have two separate colours - defined in RGB as Blue: 0,0,255 Yellow: 255,255,0 I want to add blue and yellow to make green. To over complicate things, let's say that the Blue object is bigger than the Yellow object (for the sake of argument let's say that the ratio is 2:1), I'm adding twice as much blue as yellow - how to I calculate this new (light green) colour correctly. I understand LAB * Color Space is useful for this sort of 'natural colour' kind of thing, but I'm not sure how to use it - especially in the context of a cocos2d object which (AFAIK) is limited to using RGB in its colour schemes. I'd really appreciate practical help on how to implement this. Thanks heaps!

• Losing DateTimeOffset precision when using C#

  I have a SQL Server table with a CreatedDate field of type DateTimeOffset(2). A sample value which is in the table is 2010-03-01 15:18:58.57 -05:00 As an example, from within C# I retrieve this value like so: var cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT CreatedDate FROM Entities WHERE EntityID = 2", cn); var da = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd); DataTable dt =new DataTable(); da.Fill(dt); And I look at the value: MessageBox.Show(dt.Rows[0][0].ToString()); The result is 2010-03-01 15:18:58 -05:00, which is missing the .57 that is stored in the database. If I look at dt.Rows[0][0] in the Watch window, I also do not see the .57, so it appears it has been truncated. Can someone shed some light on this? I need to use the date to match up with other records in the database and the .57 is needed. Thanks! Darvis
