  If you’re a web developer in Europe (or would like an excuse to travel to Europe), you should definitely take a look at the Web.NET event coming in October. It’s being organized by two Italian web maestros (Simone Chiaretta and Ugo Lattanzi) and the session list looks fantastic. The event site pretty much speaks for itself, but here’s a quick version: It’s a free one-day event on October 20th, with a huge variety of great sessions by great speakers, all 100% focused on web development. There’s a pizza-fuelled hackathon in the evening; thrills, spills and hot new skills. It’s a great chance to network with the local (in relative terms) web development community. It’s free (although all donations are very greatly appreciated). It’s in Milan, darling. • gigabit network with adsl modem

  Hi, i would like to build a gigabit network to connect the different computers at my home. I already have an 100Mb adsl router/modem but i have an hard time to find a 1000Mb one, so i came up with the idea of using a normal 1000Mb router or switch to put between the adsl modem and the computers. So i only use the adsl modem to connect to the internet and the gigabit router as dhcp to connect the different computers. But to get to the question. Will the 100Mb adsl router slow down my network? Will data travel like pc gigabit router computer or pc gigabit router adsl router gigabit router pc. My gut says it will go like in the first option but i have seen network hardware do some weird stuff. What do you think?

  I have my business website - I am a web designer and developer, and also buy/sell websites/domain names. As such my website links to 'Our sites' = the websites which we design and run as well as a variety of tools such as a domain whois tool. These are obviously relevant to the business. As an individual, I like to travel and do white water kayaking as a hobby. I also have a degree in economics. I have thus created a blog on my business website where I write about domain names, web design, kayaking, travelling and economics. I've just begun researching SEO and am looking into optimizing my business website. I don't actually directly offer any services to clients at the moment, my main aim is to have a business website which supports my websites. If for example a potential advertise on one of my sites checks out the business website, I want them to think professional, down to earth, quirky. Given this is having my business/personal interests intertwined a problem? For SEO.. on my homepage for example when I'm writing a headline and a paragraph about what we do.. what do I put? and how do I optimize for SEO with keywords and the like? Further to the above, my company sponsors me and a group of accquantances as a kayaking team.. as such my personal interests do sort of overlap (just to add a complexity :))

• Token based Authentication and Claims for Restful Services

  WIF as it exists today is optimized for web applications (passive/WS-Federation) and SOAP based services (active/WS-Trust). While there is limited support for WCF WebServiceHost based services (for standard credential types like Windows and Basic), there is no ready to use plumbing for RESTful services that do authentication based on tokens. This is not an oversight from the WIF team, but the REST services security world is currently rapidly changing – and that’s by design. There are a number of intermediate solutions, emerging protocols and token types, as well as some already deprecated ones. So it didn’t make sense to bake that into the core feature set of WIF. But after all, the F in WIF stands for Foundation. So just like the WIF APIs integrate tokens and claims into other hosts, this is also (easily) possible with RESTful services. Here’s how. HTTP Services and Authentication Unlike SOAP services, in the REST world there is no (over) specified security framework like WS-Security. Instead standard HTTP means are used to transmit credentials and SSL is used to secure the transport and data in transit. For most cases the HTTP Authorize header is used to transmit the security token (this can be as simple as a username/password up to issued tokens of some sort). The Authorize header consists of the actual credential (consider this opaque from a transport perspective) as well as a scheme. The scheme is some string that gives the service a hint what type of credential was used (e.g. Basic for basic authentication credentials). HTTP also includes a way to advertise the right credential type back to the client, for this the WWW-Authenticate response header is used. So for token based authentication, the service would simply need to read the incoming Authorization header, extract the token, parse and validate it. After the token has been validated, you also typically want some sort of client identity representation based on the incoming token. This is regardless of how technology-wise the actual service was built. In ASP.NET (MVC) you could use an HttpModule or an ActionFilter. In (todays) WCF, you would use the ServiceAuthorizationManager infrastructure. The nice thing about using WCF’ native extensibility points is that you get self-hosting for free. This is where WIF comes into play. WIF has ready to use infrastructure built-in that just need to be plugged into the corresponding hosting environment: Representation of identity based on claims. This is a very natural way of translating a security token (and again I mean this in the widest sense – could be also a username/password) into something our applications can work with. • How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

• My Graduate Experience at Oracle by Mayuri Khinvasara

  My experience at Oracle. I still vividly remember the day, when my name was announced in the campus hiring list of Oracle at my college. I was proud of myself but at the same time, I was getting goose bumps!!! A new world had arrived before me and the anxiousness of whether I could survive it or not had gripped me. Nervous about moving into an unknown city, I came to visit Hyderabad with my father. One look at the Oracle Campus and I felt some kind of magnetism pulling me towards it. And then, I joined Oracle in June 2009, with a lot of apprehensions in my mind. The HR Rep made us really comfortable in the first week itself. I met so many new people, managers, HR folks and most importantly 20 other Campus Hires like me. Then we had our team bonding sessions, team parties etc. I didn’t realize when the transition from campus to corporate happened. And I had started loving it. The confidence the HR Reps gave us and the bonding our managers imbibed in us, made us all ready for the new life ahead. Then started the rigorous training sessions, the excitement about our new work, new cubicles, new desktops, our first business cards, our first conference call and so on. I made new friends which were now my extended family, the freedom and courage of living alone. I was enjoying all that. As I was getting totally immersed into my regular work schedule I started getting to know the innumerable Oracle products, their functionalities, implementations and realizing the brand that Oracle is. Work pressure started increasing and so did the challenges to understand and deliver. I Didn’t realize how days and soon months passed by. Then came a golden chance to visit the Oracle Headquarters in US for 45 days training in November 2009. Once again, the excitement was enormous about the counter team-mates in HQ, the trainings ahead, the US work culture and my stay there. I felt so privileged for the company I was working. Boarding an international flight for the first time and visiting famous US cities which I had just seen in movies, was now a reality. It was a totally amazing experience. Work pressure kept me really busy, with learning new things every day, the immense satisfaction of delivering something, the nightmares of debugging a mistake, only to realize how silly it was.  I was enjoying the process. Soon a year passed by. I had transformed into this corporate software professional, I couldn’t believe I could be. Today, I complete 1 year and 8 months at Oracle and continue to look forward to the enriching experience I will have here. Truly one of the Top Companies in the World. Mayuri Khinvasara
