• Router and Switch VLAN Configuration for Isolated Network

  I haven't worked with VLANs much in the past and I was hoping if I could get a good explanation of what I need to setup for this to work. I have a Netgear WNR2000v2 router and a Netgear GS108T smart switch currently in my network. The fourth port on the router connects to port one on the switch. I would like to be able to isolated port 8 on the switch for use as a "guest port" when I bring home malware infested PCs for repair. I figured the VLAN capabilities of the GS108T would be able to do this for me, but I think I have a misunderstanding of how the VLAN actually works. Port 8 needs internet access but should not be able to communicate with the rest of the PCs on the home network. The subnet for the home network is 192.168.1.0/24 and I would like the guest PC to have A) 192.168.1.64 or B) 192.168.2.2. I am reading a lot of stuff about port trunking and VLAN membership, but I am confused as to which setup needs to be in place to make this work. Any help is greatly appreciated! Let me know if there is more information I need to provide. Definitely looking to learn something from this project. Thanks!

• Read and write from a byte stream if the endianess of the data is different from that of the current

  I have a stream of bytes which contains a flag which identifies the endianness of the data in the header. I want to read the doubles from the stream, which will presumably need to be different if the endianness of the data in the header is different? I am currently using a BinaryReader and calling ReadDouble to read the data from the stream, but if the endianness flag indicates that the data stream has a different endianness than the machine architecture then presumably this will not work? How should this be handled? Should I check the endianness of my data against that of the current machine then when I want to read a double instead read the bytes raw into a byte array and do array.Reverse to reverse the data before using BitConverter.ToDouble () with the reversed data and a zero offset? I could just test this but I do not have a source of data for both endianness so am a bit concerned about creating test data to test the parsing and this being different from what 'real' data might look like.

• How can I verify that javascript and images are being cached?

  I want to verify that the images, css, and javascript files that are part of my page are being cached by my browser. I've used Fiddler and Google Page Speed and it's unclear whether either is giving me the information I need. Fiddler shows the HTTP 304 response for images, css, and javascript which should tell the browser to use the cached copy. Google Page Speed shows the 304 response but doesn't show a Transfer Size of Zero, instead it shows the full file size of the resource. Note also, I have seen Google Page Speed report a 200 response but then put the word (cache) next to the 200 (so Status is 200 (cache)), which doesnt make a lot of sense. Any other suggestions as to how I can verify whether the server is sending back images, css, javascript after they've been retrieved and cached by a previous page hit?

I would like to solicit opinions from this forum as to what your professional expectations are as regards an entry level position in working in the database realm... I see many job opportunities that require a minimum of 2 or more years experience, how does one go about obtaining this experience (I have tried very hard to maintain a minimum 3.70+ GPA) but have ZERO work experience in this field... I spend non school time working in VB and SQL to try and increase my proficiency. I have considered postponing my job search until I obtain certifications from brainbench etc...   Java has 2 bitshift operators for right shifts: >> shifts right, and is dependant on the sign bit for the sign of the result >>> shifts right and shifts a zero into leftmost bits http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/op3.html This seems fairly simple, so can anyone explain to me why this code, when given a value of -128 for bar, produces a value of -2 for foo: byte foo = (byte)((bar & ((byte)-64)) >>> 6); What this is meant to do is take an 8bit byte, mask of the leftmost 2 bits, and shift them into the rightmost 2 bits. Ie: initial = 0b10000000 (-128) -64 = 0b11000000 initial & -64 = 0b10000000 0b10000000 >>> 6 = 0b00000010 The result actually is -2, which is 0b11111110 Ie. 1s rather than zeros are shifted into left positions

• is_tarfile() returns True for a blank file

  Hello all, I am testing some logic to handle a user uploading a TAR file. When I feed a blank file to tarfile.is_tarfile() it returns True, which is not what I am expecting: $ touch tartest $ cat tartest $ python -c "import tarfile; print tarfile.is_tarfile('tartest')" True If I add some text to the file, it returns False, which I am expecting: $ echo "not a tar" > tartest $ python -c "import tarfile; print tarfile.is_tarfile('tartest')" False I could add a check at the beginning to check for a zero-length file, but based on the documentation for tarfile.is_tarfile(name) I think this is unecessary: Return True if name is a tar archive file, that the tarfile module can read. I went so far as to check the source, tarfile.py, and I can see that it is checking header blocks but I do not fully understand how it is evaluating those blocks. Am I misreading the documentation and therefore setting unfair expectations? Thank you, Zachary

• Mysql can not resolve hostnames when checking privileges

  I'm going crazy to solve this. I have a mysql installation (on machine db.example.org) which doesn't resolve a given hostname. I gave privileges using hostnames i.e. GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'user'@'host1.example.org' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD 'secret' GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, INDEX ON `my_database`.* TO 'user'@'host1.example.org' However when I try to connect using mysql -u user -p -h db.example.org I obtain ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'user'@'192.168.11.244' (using password: YES) I already checked for correct name resolution in the dns system: $ dig -x 192.168.11.244 ;; ANSWER SECTION: 244.11.168.192.in-addr.arpa. 68900 IN PTR host1.example.org. I've also checked for skip-name-resolve option in mysql variables in fact if I can access from another machine on the same subnet using hostname privileges. The only difference is that host1.example.org and db.example.org point the same ip on the same machine i.e. both db.example.org and host1.example.org have ip 192.168.11.244. In this way all the applications using that database can use the name db.example.org and we can move the data on other hosts (if needed) just by changing the dns record, leaving the application code unchanged. What should I do to solve this or at least to understand what's happening?

• How to improve my Python regex syntax?

  I very new to Python, and fairly new to regex. (I have no Perl experience.) I am able to use regular expressions in a way that works, but I'm not sure that my code is particularly Pythonic or consise. For example, If I wanted to read in a text file and print out text that appears directly between the words 'foo' and 'bar' in each line (presuming this occurred one or zero times a line) I would write the following: fileList = open(inFile, 'r') pattern = re.compile(r'(foo)(.*)(bar)') for line in fileList: result = pattern.search(line) if (result != None): print result.groups()[1] Is there a better way? The if is necessary to avoid calling groups() on None. But I suspect there is a more concise way to obtain the matching String when there is one, without throwing errors when there isn't. I'm not hoping for Perl-like unreadability. I just want to accomplish this common task in the commonest and simplest way.

• Slow Citrix connection related to mapped network drives

  I have this weird issue with Citrix being slow and maybe users just being a little dramatic, but I am curious as to why that happens. Let me give you a little bit of a background. Citrix is running off of Windows 2003 server, TSprofiles and file server were located on the same server, until recently. We have moved our file server over to a new server with tons of space. We have Citrix on one server, TSprofiles on another and file server on third. We are using logon scripts to map home drives, shared drive and etc. Now, up until we made the file server move, the logon process took several seconds and most users couldn't even notice logon script being executed as they logon. Now, it takes upwards of several minutes and users can see logon script being executed at a slow pace, one line at a time. The only new variable in this whole scenario is the new file server. All the servers are physically located in the same location and on the same subnet. So, I guess my question is, if anyone can explain why a sudden sluggishness? And any tools I can use to troubleshoot the issue? Thanks!

  Tcpflow outputs a bunch of files, many of which are HTTP responses from a web server. Inside, they contain HTTP headers, including Content-type: , and other important ones. I'm trying to write a script that can extract just the payload data (i.e. image/jpeg; text/html; et al.) and save it to a file [optional: with an appropriate name and file extension]. The EOL chars are \r\n (CRLF) and so this makes it difficult to use in GNU distros (in my experiences). I've been trying something along the lines of: sed /HTTP/,/^$/d To delete all text from the the beginning of HTTP (incl) to the end of \r\n\r\n (incl) but I have found no luck. I'm looking for help from anyone with good experience in sed and/or awk.   I have a variable MediaElement variable named TestAudio in my Silverlight app. When I click the button, it plays the audio correctly. But when I click the button again, it does not play the audio. How can I make the MediaElement play a second time? • Debian network bridge configuration - /etc/network/interfaces

  I'm running a Lenny Xen dom0 hosting multiple virtual machines in a routed IP setup. To get an additional private subnet, I created the bridge xenbr0 in the dom0 with the following commands: brctl addbr xenbr0 ifconfig xenbr0 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 ifconfig xenbr0 up This works as expected, and domU interfaces are added to the bridge by Xen on VM start. My only problem is: how the heck do i specify this configuration in /etc/network/interfaces that it remains permanent and the bridge is available after a reboot? I tried the following config as found on a lot of tutorials: auto xenbr0 iface xenbr0 inet static address 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 10.0.0.0 broadcast 10.0.0.255 bridge_stp no I get 2 different errors, depending on if the bridge already exists or not. • UITableView: moving a row into an empty section

  I have a UITableView with some empty sections. I'd like the user to be able to move a row into them using the standard edit mode controls. The only way I can do it so far is to have a dummy row in my "empty" sections and try to hide it by using tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath: to give the dummy row a height of zero. This seems to leave it as a 1-pixel row. I can probably hide this by making a special type of cell that's just filled with [UIColor groupTableViewBackgroundColor], but is there a better way? This is all in the grouped mode of UITableView UPDATE: Looks like moving rows into empty sections IS possible without any tricks, but the "sensitivity" is bad enough that you DO need tricks in order to make it usable for general users (who won't be patient enough to slowly hover the row around the empty section until things click)

Searches of pretty much everywhere I could think of turn up little to explain why the rate is so low. I asked a few friends and they're seeing the same thing. What gives and how can I make it better?   I'm am using JEditorPane to render basic HTML. But it renders self-closing tags incorrectly, specifically br tags, e.g. <br /> is bad but <br> is good. I would like to use String.replaceAll(regex, "<br>") to fix the HTML, where regex is a regular expression matching any self-closing br tag with case-insensitivity and zero to infinity number of spaces between the "r" and the "/" (e.g., <br/>, <BR/>, <br />, <Br     />, etc.). • Winforms application hangs when switching to another app

This started when I put the threading code. Could I have some rogue threads out there? what is the best way to zero in a threading problem? • MSDTC - Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed (Firewall open, MSDTC network access on)

  I'm having problems with my ASP.NET web forms system. It worked on our test server but now we are putting it live one of the servers is within a DMZ and the SQL server is outside of that (on our network still though - although a different subnet) I have open up the firewall completely between these two boxes to see if that was the issue and it still gives the error message "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed" whenever we try and use the "TransactionScope". We can access the data for retrieval it's just transactions that break it. We have also used msdtc ping to test the connection and with the amendments on the firewall that pings successfully, but the same error occurs! How do i resolve this error? Any help would be great as we have a system to go live today. Panic :) Edit: I have created a more straightforward test page with a transaction as below and this works fine. Could a nested transaction cause this kind of error and if so why would this only cause an issue when using a live box in a dmz with a firewall? • Using "route add" to tell my computer to use a direct ethernet connexion instead of wifi ?

  2 PCs are involved. Both are connected to the internet via Wifi on the same router. I can ping to/from each other and share folders flawlessly, but I'd like to be able to set a direct Ethernet link between them to speed up file transfers AND keep the Wifi connections (no gateway). So I plugged my RJ45 cable, and set up the connection. It works, but the PCs are only using this connection if one of them if disconnected from the Wifi. PC1 local address is 192.168.0.7 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.21 on the wifi one. PC2 local address is 192.168.0.6 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.22 on the wifi one. My question is : I'd like to using the route add command to tell PC1 to use the Ethernet interface when it needs to connect with PC2, by specifying "IF 2" at the end of the route add command. How can I do this ? MySql.Data.Types.MySqlConversionException: Unable to convert MySQL date/time value to System.DateTime The document reviews table has two date/time fields. One of them is nullable. I have tried placing following in connection string: Allow Zero Datetime=true; But I am still getting exception. Anyone with a solution?

• DSP - How are frequency amplitudes modified using DFT?

  I'm trying to implement a DFT-based equalizer (not FFT) for the sole purpose of learning. To check if it works I took an audio signal, analyzed it and then resynthesized it again with no modifications made to the frequency spectrum. So far so good. Now I tried to silence some frequency bands, just by setting their amplitudes to zero before resynthesis, but definitely it's not the way to go. What I get is a rather distorted signal. I'm using the so-called 'standard way of calculating the DFT' which is by correlation. I first tried to modify the real part amplitudes only, then modifying both the real and imaginary part amplitudes. I also tried to convert the DFT output to polar notation, then modifying the magnitude and convert back to rectangular notation, but none of this is working. Can someone show me what I'm doing wrong? I tried to find info on this subject in the internet but couldn't find any. Thanks in advance.

• Network Explorer Intermittently Fails to Display all Computers in Work Group

  I run a small computer lab of 10 computers and occasionally, when using the network explorer (a.k.a Network Browser) some or all of the remote computers will fail to appear. If I try to access a remote computer by its name I get an unspecified error (code 0x80004005), but I am still able to access it with the computer's IP address. The strangest part is that the problem will inexplicably go away after waiting awhile. Each computer is running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise and has identical hardware, software and configuration. They are all on the same subnet and in the same workgroup. I've spent days researching the problem and have tried the following solutions: Updated the BIOS, chipset and network adapter drivers Changed Power Settings in Network Adapter Properties so that the computer will not turn it off Disabled the Computer Browser service Changed the DHCP node type to broadcast Reviewed the Event Viewer logs Steps 3 and 4 have seemed to help the problem a little bit, but not completely. I'm beginning to suspect that the problem might lie with our router which is a ZyXEL ZyWALL 2WG, as the packets sent by Network Discovery may not be returning in time, but I wanted to get some perspective in the issue before I went any further.
