  • Calculate initial velocity of a 3d vector-based projectile

    Okay, so I got a Projectile with 2 Vectors, position and velocity. I now want to calculate the initial velocity for it in order to reach a specific point on the map. Or actually, how high has the start z-velocity to be (because x and y are probably defined by a speed variable) in order for the projectile to hit the marked position. The projectile is influenced by a constant gravity vector. All calculations are done 32 times per second. I want this, because I don't want to use a parabola function, so the projectile can still be influenced by other sources, simply adding some velocity. I didn't really find anything referring to that topic and would be glad for every helping answer, Thanks.

    I am attempting to have a projectile follow the direction a gun is facing. When using the following code I am unable to make the projectile go in the right direction. float speed = .5f; float dX = (float) -Math.cos(Math.toRadians(degree)) * speed; float dY = (float) Math.sin(Math.toRadians(degree)) * speed; Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? The degree is the direction the gun is facing in degree's.

    I'm trying to implement a simple projectile motion in Android (with openGL). And I want to add gravity to my world to simulate a ball's dropping realistically. But since the update() method runs as faster as it can, the length and therefore the speed of the ball varies from device to device. If I don't touch deltaTime and run the program (deltaTime's are between 0.01 - 0.02 with my test devices) animation length and the speed of ball are same at different devices. But the animation is so SLOW! What am I doing wrong?

  • Who should respond to collision: Unit or projectile?

    In an RTS if a projectile hits a unit. Who should handle the collision? If projectile handles the collision, it must be aware of all possible types of units, to know what damage to inflict. For example a bullet will likely kill a human, but it will do nothing to a tank. The same goes if unit handles a collision. So either way one of them should be aware of all possible types of the other. Of course the 'true' way would be to do full physics simulation, but that's not an option for an RTS with 1000s of units and projectiles... So what are the common practicies in this regards?

  • Projectile Rotation

    I'm trying to add a projectile system like the projectiles in Realm Of The Mad God. (YouTube it to see what I mean) These projectiles seem to move according to their rotation perfectly and can have nearly any rotation. They also have near perfect hitboxing. What's the maths behind this? My Game works on an integer-based coordinate system, but at the moment projectiles can only shoot either 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225, 270 and 315 degrees.

  • Lag compensation of projectile shooting game

    I'm thinking about an algorithm for firing projectiles with lag compensation. Now I did find only one descent solution: Player hits fire button. Client sends input "fire". Client waits for server response. Server generates bullet then sends response to client. Client recieves response and finally fires projectile. Is this solution only "trueway"? I find it the only one that can be fair to all of the clients. Valve in this case, doesn't compensate lag from rocket shots. I am feeling that I will not compensate it, too. I think that with today's bandwidth I can close my eyes on this problem, because I don't see any solutions with fair logic. What do you think?

    I'm making a thing that launches projectiles in 2D. Its projectiles are fired with a set initial velocity, and are only affected by gravity. Assuming that its target is within range, and that there aren't any obstacles, how would my thing find the appropriate angle at which to launch its projectile (in radians)? The equation for this is found here: Wikipedia: Angle Required to Hit Coordinate Sadly, I'm not a physicist (a.k.a. can't read smart people math) and am having a hard time reading its breakdown. If not only for the sake of anybody else that might read this other than myself, would anybody be kind enough to break the equation down into baby words please?

  • Flash Actionscript 3.0 Game Projectile Creation

    I have been creating a side-scrolling Actionscript 3.0 game. In this game I want the Player to be able to shoot blow darts as weapons. I had some trouble getting the darts to be created in the right place (in front of the player), but eventually got it working with some help from this page (please look at it for background information on this problem): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8031553/flash-actionscript-3-0-game-projectile-creation I got the darts to be created in the right place (near the player) and a 'movePlayerDarts()' function moves them. But I actually have a new problem. When the player moves after firing a dart, the dart tries to follow him! If the player jumps, the dart rises up. If the player moves to the left, the dart moves slightly to the left. Obviously, there is some code somewhere which is telling the darts to follow the player. I do not see how, unless the 'playerDartContainer' has something to do with that. But the container is always at position (0,0) and it does not move. Also, as a test I traced a dart's 'y' coordinate within the constantly-running 'movePlayerDarts()' function. As you can see, that function constantly moves the dart down the y axis by increasing its y-coordinate value. But when I jump, the 'y' coordinate being traced is never reduced, even though the dart clearly looks like it's rising! If anybody has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them!     I'm looking to create a basic Javascript implementation of a projectile that follows a parabolic arc (or something close to one) to arrive at a specific point. I'm not particularly well versed when it comes to complex mathematics and have spent days reading material on the problem. Unfortunately, seeing mathematical solutions is fairly useless to me. I'm ideally looking for pseudo code (or even existing example code) to try to get my head around it. Everything I find seems to only offer partial solutions to the problem. In practical terms, I'm looking to simulate the flight of an arrow from one location (the location of the bow) to another. It strikes me there are two distinct problems here: determining the position of interception between the projectile and a (moving) target, and then calculating the trajectory of the projectile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If a blue vehicle is moving in a direction at a constant speed of X m/s and a stationary orange vehicle has a rocket that travels Y m/s, which initial direction would the orange vehicle have to fire the rocket for it to hit the blue vehicle at the earliest time in the future? When a projectile collides with the ground, an area equal to the blast radius which overlaps the ground is removed. It's strictly two dimensional, but it makes the experience that much more dynamic since you can dig a hole under your opponents or yourself. How is this implemented?

  • How do I make good guy attacks only hit bad guys and vice versa?

    My game has many different type of good guys and many different type of bad guys. They will all be firing projectiles at each other but I don't want any accidental collateral damage to occur for either alignment. So bad guys should not be able to hit/damage other bad guys and good guys should not be able to hit/damage other good guys. The way I'm thinking of solving this is by making it so that the Unit instance (this is javascript, btw), has an alignment property that can be either good or bad. And I'll only let collision happen if the class Attack boolean didAttackCollideWithTarget(target) return attack.source.alignment != target.alignment and collisionDetected(attack.source, target) This is pseudo-code, of course. But I'm asking this question because I get the sense that there might be a much more elegant way to design this besides adding yet another property to my Unit class.

    I'm trying to find a good solution for a bullet to hit the enemy. The game is 2D tower defense, the tower is supposed to shoot a bullet and hit the enemy guaranteed. I tried this solution - http://blog.wolfire.com/2009/07/linear-algebra-for-game-developers-part-1/ The link mentioned to subtract the bullet's origin and the enemy as well (vector subtraction).     I have been playing games like MW2 recently and, as a programmer, I tend to ask myself how do they make the game so immersive. For example, how to they simulate bullet speed. When an NPC fires a bullet from his gun, does the bullet really travel from his gun to the given target or do they they completely ignore this part and just put a bullet hole on the target? If the bullet is really travelling from the gun to the target, at what speed is it actually travelling?

  • How to calculate turn heading to a missile?

    I have a missile that is shot from a ship at an angle, the missile then turns towards the target in an arc with a given turn radius. How do I determine the point on the arc when I need to start turning so the missile is heading straight for the target? EDIT What I need to do before I launch the missiles is calculate and draw the flight paths. So in the attached example the launch vehicle has a heading of 90 deg and the targets are behind it. Both missiles are launched at a relative heading of -45deg or + 45 deg to the launch vehicle's heading. The missiles initially turn towards the target with a known turn radius. I have to calculate the point at which the turn takes the missile to heading at which it will turn to directly attack the target. Obviously if the target is at or near 45 degrees then there is no initial turn the missile just goes straight for the target. After the missile is launched the map will also show the missile tracking on this line as indication of its flight path. What I am doing is working on a simulator which mimics operational software. So I need to draw the calculated flight path before I allow the missile to be launched. In this example the targets are behind the launch vehicle but the precalculated paths are drawn.

  • What is a technique for 2D ray-box intersection that is suitable for old console hardware?

    I'm working on a Sega Genesis homebrew game (it has a 7mhz 68000 CPU). I'm looking for a way to find the intersection between a particle sprite and a background tile. Particles are represented as a point with a movement vector. Background tiles are 8 x 8 pixels, with an (X,Y) position that is always located at a multiple of 8. So, really, I need to find the intersection point for a ray-box collision; I need to find out where along the edge of the tile the ray/particle hits. I have these two hard constraints: I'm working with pixel locations (integers). Floating point is too expensive. It doesn't have to be super exact, just close enough. Multiplications, divisions, dot products, et cetera, are incredibly expensive and are to be avoided. So I'm looking for an efficient algorithm that would fit those constraints. Any ideas? I'm writing it in C, so that would work, but assembly should be good as well.

    I play alot of COD4. And can see tracers for gunfire, missles, care packages fall from helicopters etc. There is alot of activity. I am curious to know the algorithm (at a high level) that manages all this action when you have 20 people on a map shooting each other to death ? This question touches on the subject but doesn't ask for a more in-depth answer as to how you the developers go about calculating and transmitting movement and collision detection for projectiles, be it missles/bullets or any other object that is flying through the air in real-time.

  • Trying to make a game with C++, using lists to store bullets and enemies, but they are not erased

    I've been trying to make a pretty simple space shooter game with C++, and I have been having a lot of trouble trying to use lists to store enemies and bullets. Basically I followed the post here almost exactly to store my bullets: SDL Bullet Movement I've done something similar to store my enemies. However, when I call bullets.erase(it++), for some reason the bullet is not erased. When the bullet movement is run for the next frame, it tries to re delete the bullet and segfaults the program. When I comment out the erase line, it runs fine, but the bullets are then never erased from the list... Is there any reason why the elements of the list aren't being deleted? I also set it up to print the number of elements in the list for every iteration, and it does not go down after deleting. Thanks! EDIT: Here's the specific code I'm using to store my enemies and having them act: std::list<Grunt*> doGrunts(std::list<Grunt*> grunts) { for(std::list<Grunt*>::iterator it = grunts.begin(); it != grunts.end();) { if((*it)->getHull() == 0) { delete * it; grunts.erase(it++); } else { (**it).doUnit(grunts, it); ++it; } } } Grunt is my enemy class, and the list grunts is a global variable. Is that my problem? When I pass the global into the function it becomes local? I assumed lists would be a reference type so thought this wouldn't be a problem. Sorry if this was a dumb question, I'm very new to C++, this is the first major thing I'm working on.

    I'm currently working on my first space shooter, and I'm in the process of making my ship shoot some bullets/lasers. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time getting the bullets to fly vertically.     I've scored the internet for sources and have found a lot of useful information, but they are math sites trying to tell me how to solve what angle an object has to be at to reach y location. However, I'm trying to run a simulation, and haven't found any solid equations that can be implemented to code to simulate a parabolic curve. Can those with some knowledge of physics help me on this?
