• 1and1: Unable to host an external domain

  I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this question, but I'm presently having difficulties with my hosting provider (1and1). Two weeks ago, two of my clients bought hosting from them on my recommendation, but as it turned out, 1and1 are having severe technical difficulties. Right now non of their hosting packages are able to accept ANY external domains. So either you pay the costs of transferring the registrar of your domain, or you use the ugly 1and1 domain name. Not any good for a hosting company of 1and1's reputation! They have been promising me for two weeks that they're going to fix the problem, but as you have probably guessed by now, that hasn't been the case. I would like to know if a) Anyone else is in the same boat as me, and b) If there are other comparably reputable hosting providers that I should consider moving to instead? Very disappointing! :( Note: This is for 1and1 in the UK. I imagine it isn't affecting users in other countries(?) Clarification: 1and1 are unable to accept ANY external domains. That means that even if you update your DNS details on your domain, their system cannot be updated to add your external domain to your account.

• Using 1and1.com Servers, SMTP Mail is Limited - Local XAMPP Server Works As Expected

  I'm starting to not like 1and1.com that much. I've used them for years, but mainly for simple sites without much need for configuration. I know there are better hosting companies out and I may go seeking them. The problem here is that on my Local XAMPP server (sitting on a network with Comcast ISP), I have a PHP script that uses PEAR::Mail to send mail using MIME. The script works find locally with either smtp.1and1.com and corresponding credentials and smtp.gmail.com with corresponding credentials, using appropriate ports, etc. 1and1 tells me that I have to change the MX record on the domain where this script runs in order to make this work. This doesn't make sense to me. Now I'm pretty new to all this, but how is it that this is the case? Why can my local server work just fine, out of the box, but their servers not? I have asked them these questions, but they are very vague and I cannot get any good answers from them. • 1and1 ssh - connection refused

  I'm having troubles connecting through SSH to my 1&1 account. • Permanent redirect domain to www subdomain without web.config

  I've just set up a site via 1and1 and have run into an issue, I want to accomplish the simple task of redirecting the root domain to the www sub domain however due to complications I cant seam to find a way to get it to work. I'm on a Microsoft (asp.net) package so can't use .htaccess, also the IIS server they have doesn't have the URL redirect module installed (so can't use <rewrite> in web.config). They have built in HTTP forwarding options however if I set the root domain to redirect to the www sub domain it just infinitely redirects. Hopefully there is some obvious option/method I've missed during the past two days of searching!

• hosting site on one web server and accessing a database on another

  I'm fairly sure this is the right place for this question, but if not please move it to the the right site. I have a number of sites on a 1and1 package (yeah, I know...) and I also have a subdomian that belongs to a college tutor. I have been playing around with PHP and MySQL databases on the subdomian site and would like to know if it is possible to run a database driven (i.e. blog) on one of my 1and1 sites. I could upgrade my package but if I'm only going to gain database functionality I'm not sure if I want to do it. Also, as 1and1 don't use cPanel I'm wondering how the databases would be managed...but I'll worry about that when (if) the time comes. Cheers!

• How can a hacker put a file on my server root (apache, php, 1and1)

  Hi there, I have a site hosted on 1and1 and a couple of weeks ago I noticed a hacker had put a .php file on the server that when viewed in a browser exposed my DB schema, DB connection strings, FTP account (for file uploads using a form), etc, etc. Naturally I panicked and I wiped the server and reuploaded my files. Fortunatley I encrypt passwords using MD5 and I don't store things like credit card details, etc, etc. Now I checked my files and with all user input I use a clean function (htmlentities, sql_real_escape_string, etc, etc) that strips the input of any XSS or SQL injection. I have also made sure that the session key gets re-engineered when a user status changes (like they log into their account) to prevent session hijacking, my folder permissions are set to 755 and file permission are 644. Has anyone got any idea how this could have happened? Or if I'm missing something

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I just paid ($6 /month) for shared Windows hosting through 1&1 hosting. I was having trouble connecting to my database from home, so I sent an email to support. I received the following response: As we checked your concern here in our end, please be advised that due to limitation of Shared Hosting services, there is no option to connect the database to your SQL Management Studio or through Visual Studio. It is only possible for Dedicated Server package. You may only access the database using MyLittleAdmin at the Control Panel. A dedicated server is like $200 per month! What is the point of having database access only through a web console? I feel I am missing something here, or maybe the support agent is. Is there a way to access my MS SQL database on their servers through Visual Studio or SQL Management Studio from my machine? If not, is there a web host who allows this for less than $200 a month? EDIT: Marked as duplicate... I'm not asking for a list of web hosts, I'm asking how to remotely connect to my MSSQL database through 1&1's services.

• How can I create an SPF record on my 1and1.com hosted domain?

  Emails from my domain (hosted at 1and1, and using Google Apps Premier edition) have sporadically been going to recipients' spam folders lately. I did some research, tested, and found out that I do not have an SPF record for my domain. According to this Google Support page, I need to create one. Following the steps on that page is easy, until I get to #3: Create a TXT record containing this text: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all I see no way to create a "TXT record".   There's a fairly complex application than runs on two VMs (on Xen). Both VMs run CentOS 6.2 with the exact same packages and configuration for every application running (minus networking which is different). SELinux is disabled on both. On machine A the application builds perfectly. On machine B when running some tests we get: ruby[2010] trap invalid opcode ip:7ff9d2944c30 sp:7fff9797e0f8 error:0 in ld-2.12.so[7ff9d2930000+20000] Digging a bit more to find out where the machines differ, machine A has: model name : Six-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2423 HE and machine B: model name : AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272 I've tried booting machine B with cpuid_mask_cpu=fam_10_rev_c in grub but it did not help either. So any advice as to how to deal with this, or how to approach the hosting provider so as to run this VM on another physical machine will be greatly appreciated.

• Attach a Wordpress.org blog to my BigCommerce Store as a sub-domain

  I am stuck in a peculiar situation. I have a store on BigCommerce configured with a domain from GoDaddy (mystore.com). I recently created a custom wordpress blog and hosted it on 1and1 hosting (s418783372.onlinehome.us), since bigcommerce can't host Wordpress. Now, I want to use it from a sub-domain of my main-bigcommerece store (models.mystore.com), but it doesn't seem to be working since BigCommerce is the Domain Manager, but GoDaddy is the Domain-Registrar and 1and1 is the host so it doesn't control the domain. I have tried setting up a CNAME record on BigCommerece and when it didn't work asked BigCommerece about it, but they said they can't do anything about it since they aren't the domain registrar and gave me a message saying: The responsiblity to show the name in the browser on the site is up to the server or site admin. The Cname can only get the browser there UPDATE: I succeeded in setting up a CNAME on BigCommerce poinitng to the site at 1and1, but for some-reason, all it gives me is a 404-Not-Found error. I was thinking this is due to a restriction on 1and1, any idea on how to overcome that? Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I tried adding a domain on the 1and1 control panel (http://faq.1and1.co.uk/domains/domain_xfers/dns_transfer/4.html), pointing to models.mystore.com, but it isn't letting me add a Sub-Domain, there... UPDATE: I added mystore.com as an external domain and them added models.mystore.com as a sub-domain on the 1and1 hosting Domains panel. And it works :) Thank you all

  I have a "business package" with 1and1, and currently, any new users I want to give ftp access to must be uXXXXXXXX-___ where X is a number and _ is whatever I specify. Is it possible to get around the uXXXXXXXX requirement, and set a username to be whatever I want it to be? If that's not possible, what is the reason for having a mandatory prefix like this?

• Transfer all 1&1 web and e-mail services to own Synology NAS using No-IP for DDNS

  I have a domain x-treem.net. The registrar is DomainDiscover and I have a hosting package with 1&1 which includes web and e-mail. I also have an additional package with 1&1 - Microsoft Exchange which centralises all my e-mails, tasks, contacts, notes, etc. and I connect to it with my PC (Outlook) and my Android phone. I have just purchased a Synology NAS (DS213) and I can see I can run a web server (Web Station), e-mail server (Mail Server) on it amongst other things. I am behind a dynamic IP. So, I'm looking to get some clarification on what I must do to consolidate my services and make use of my NAS to do as much as possible and save third-party hosting costs. My registrar specifies nameservers as NS45.1AND1.CO.UK and NS46.1AND1.CO.UK. The MX record is mx00.1and1.co.uk and mx01.1and1.co.uk. I'm aware of the concept of DDNS and I am looking at using No-IP.com for this. This is where I need clarification. If I registered with the No-IP paid service and pointed my registrar to No-IP's nameservers, and used the DDNS support on my NAS (which supports No-IP), then any requests to x-treem.net would go to my NAS. Is that correct? Therefore, web requests would hit the web server on my NAS, and e-mails would hit the mail server on my NAS? So, given all of the above, I can then drop 1&1 completely and use my NAS for everything. I use MySQL, phpMyAdmin, phpBB on 1&1 all of which the Synology NAS appears to support in its available packages. As for Microsoft Exchange, Synology offers Zafara which appears to be a drop-in replacement for Exchange. Am I on the right track here, or is there anything I am missing?

• DNS hijack - prevention tips

  Hi there, Over the weekend it looks like the DNS was hijacked on two of my domains. My set up is I have the sites registered on 1and1.co.uk, with dns nameservers pointing to Hostgator in the US where the sites are hosted. I also had cloudflare CDN running on the sites (via hostgator cpanel). My question is any ideas as to how this happened, and how I could either monitor it so I know if it occurs again, or strengthen the set up/service to minimise the risk. History: I received a ping from my site monitoring service that the sites were down. When I checked the sites were up so I assumed it was local to the monitoring service I received a ping last night the sites were up When I checked, one site was redirecting to download-manual.com (and checking that URL now, the home page is not the same as the one I saw, so they too may have been hijacked/hacked) The other site URL remained the same but had one of those standard site search pages which bounce you off to either phishing or paid for search sites I notified Hostgator who told me Cloudflare or 1and1 were the issue. I removed cloudflare, and contacted both them and hostgator, and am awaiting a response, but am not holding my breath. Is this common? I've never heard of this or come across this before. It's pretty scary that this can happen so easily. Appreciate any input. **Update: I've now spoken to support at 1and1, Hostgator, and Cloudflare, and each one claims it has nothing to do with them, and must be one of the others. Larry, curly, moe.

• How to forward a [sub]domain to another address? (not just HTTP!)

  Hello everyone! I have bought domain1.me from GoDaddy... (yeah, I know... but ME domain registrars seemed quite hard to find...) I'm mainly hosted at 1and1. I have registered subdomain sub1.domain1.me and redirected it to my 1and1 account. That should eventually work fine. Then I have registered sub2.domain1.me and tried to redirect it to a box at home. It works #1 when for HTTP. I can access SSH server without any problem when I use the IP directly, but not when using sub2.domain1.me:22. The way I see this, they (GoDaddy) are redirecting only on port 80 (why would they?). I have looked at 1and1 forwarding too and they ask for an URI starting with http so I guess that's the same behavior. What are you guys doing to be able to host stuff from home (HTTP, SSH, SVN, Git, etc. etc.) using a domain name to prevent everyone to have to remember your IP??? Heeeelp! Thanks!

  I am stuck in a peculiar situation. I have a store on BigCommerece configured with a domain from GoDaddy (mystore.com). I recently created a custom wordpress blog and hosted it on 1and1 hosting (s418783372.onlinehome.us), since bigcommerece can't host Wordpress. Now I want to use it from a sub-domain of my main-bigcommerece store (models.mystore.com), but it doesn't seem to be working since BigCommerce is the Doman Manager, but GoDaddy is the Domain-Registrar and 1and1 is the host so it doesn't control the domain. I have tried setting up a CNAME record on BigCommerece and when it didn't work asked BigCommerece about it, but they said they can't do anything about it since they aren't the domain registrar and gave me a message saying: The responsiblity to show the name in the browser on the site is up to the server or site admin. The Cname can only get the browser there

  I have a domain "test.com" and I want this domain to redirect to "mydomain.com/test". I'm with 1and1 for my domain test.com and with discountAsp for mydomain.com. In the control panel of 1and1 you can set a redirection from a domain to another domain, so everything is fine. But when i'm on the page mydomain.com/test I want my url to be rewritten as test.com Is this possible to do that with IIS or in my asp.page (would prefer in my page) I'm using iis7 Thanks

  I installed centos and configured email server and if I send email goes perfectly but if i reply from email that email i am getting this kind of error. Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain example.com by mx00.1and1.com. [74.208.5.3]. I have bought domain in 1and1.com and i successful parked the domain. But i have doubt shall i need to add anything in MX record for other mail server. Please anyone help.

• Create subdomains via C-Panel or via domain registrar?

  I am a novice, so excuse me if it sounds dummy. I read a few similar questions on this topic here but they did not answer my question. I have a personal website, hosted with C-panel control panel. Via C-panel I can easily create new subdomains and I do not need to apply any DNS settings or so. And the subdomian is good to go immediately and are working fine. I have unlimited subdomains option. When I check my DNS management control panel in my domain registrar's site, there is no record associated with my subdomains. Now I want to buy a new domain name from 1and1, and have it as an add-on domain in my prevouse host. 1and1 say they only allow 5 subdomains. What does this mean? Can not I create unlimited subdomains under my new domain name, just as I do for my old domain? How does C-panel create and manage subdomains that there is nothing about it in my DNS control panel?   My kind webhost (1and1) royally asked me to go elsewhere to do something like this. I have 2 sites. One of them was developed by a .Net programmer. Now I am contracted to implement a PHP site and fetch data from the .Net site. There is an ASP.Net form that a customer fills and when they hit submit, the data gets stored in SQL Server DB. How do I also store the same data in MySQL parallelly? I cannot directly use some database connectors with ASP.Net since MySQL connectivity is not supported on 1and1 Windows hosting (biz account, no less!). What I thought of is to publish an RSS feed of entries in ASP.Net site and routinely scrape that data into MySQL on Linux host. It is an overkill, I know. Not efficient. I thought I would pick the best brains on SOF to get a different, efficient opinion. Thanks in advance guys...
