Hi. I need to setup a Raid 1 in Dell Poweredge 2850 Server. It has 2 scsi 73 gb disks, i am trying with Dell Server asisstant but i can't see no disk utilities. any idea ?
I'm trying to set up a Poweredge 2850 as a web server, but as a server novice it's causing me some confusion.
Its a virgin install so no data to be lost as yet, so I'd like to get the best arrangement for setting up Windows Server 2008. The box will run IIS, a mail and FTP server.
The current physical arrangement of the hot swap drives is

First I've got to say I'm a Linux / Ubuntu novice, so go gentle on me
as I'm on day 3.
I've managed to get Ubuntu server Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed and
running on the Poweredge 1850 I bought off ebay. The box will go in a
rack at my office but I want to be able to work on it and power on and
off from home and I gather that (maybe) IPMI over LAN…
I have installed Ubuntu on a DELL2850 and I have configured an array of 5 disks (SCSI 73GB 10K) in RAID5.
I wanted to simulate a drive error so in the middle of something I just took one of the drives out and put it back again after a bit. Then the drive shows an orange light and seems to be rebuilding but actually is taking hours and hours…
I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration?…
I'm a server novice and have been given a Dell2850 (PERC 4e/Di). It has 3 blank HDs that I think are configured as RAID 5. I am trying to install W2K8 R2 SP1 on it. It doesn't have a DVD reader so I created an install USB. This works fine until it's time to copy files to the HD. It can't see a HD. There is an option to browse for…
Just wanted to know if both of these are fully compatible with Ubuntu?
If only specific versions of Ubuntu are compatible, then which ones?

Matters I am more concerned about are:
1) Affect on battery life for both?
2) Dual boot without the…
After upgrading my vostro 3360 on Ubuntu 12.04, I saw that drivers were not available for this version (notably for network). So I decided to install 11.10 but the mic still doesn't work (notably on Skype, Gtalk etc.) I join the model of the audio device and the drivers which were installed before I upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 (I…
Hello,
the Dell R510 and R710 can both hold regular configurations (e.g. X5650, 24 GB RAM, etc.) and these usually come out to about the same price.
Is there a particular reason why one would choose the R510 over the R710 or vice versa?
There really appears a lack of differentiating factors. The only 'major' factor I…
My company is allowing me to upgrade to either the XPS 9000 or the Optiplex 980. I haven't bought an Optiplex in over a decade, and the only thing I can remember is that the Optiplex is really meant for corporate IT environments, and we're not even close being large enough to have IT issues. I think the components…
My netbook cannot access the wifi network, and I cannot enable it. This is the second time this has happenned. The first time, it came back after a lot of restarts and BIOS factory resets.
Ubuntu sometimes simply won't connect to any wifi networks, and other times it will say that the wireless is blocked by a…
Today I acquired a Dell XPS 1645. Ubuntu seems to run alright on it however The bluetooth is not detected and the WiFi doesn't work. The WiFi is especially weird because I actually have the restricted driver enabled for it. It also worked for a short while when I first booted into Ubuntu however now there…
I've just installed 12.04.1 from scratch on my Mini 10v, and the touchpad is behaving a bit oddly.
It's got buttons integrated into the touchpad, and it looks as though a touch on a button is also being registered as a touch on the touchpad, causing all sorts of problems with clicking and dragging.
Is…
Does anyone know if there is a plain PCI (or PCIX) USB 3 adapter. i understand the bandwidth of PCI < USB3, but it still beats the heck out of USB 2. i have some older dell 2850s that do not have the PCI E ports that most USB 3 adapters require. i'd really like to get usb3 in those servers. i…
I've called Dell twice to try and clarify this basic (or so I thought) question, but I've had two different answers so far.
We have a Dell R710, and a Dell R720. Does DRAC come installed by default on either? Dell said it comes build into the motherboard on the R720 but the second time I rang,…
I'm working on a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. It was running slowly and hanging, antivirus scans turned up nothing and the same with the Dell diagnostics (DFT hung - but Dell's diagnostics gave the HD a pass) so I imaged the HD and installed XP Pro on it.
The laptop is still slow! (It takes a…

I have a new Dell XPS 17 laptop and have an issue that the two USB SS ports on the rear of the machine are not recognising anything when I start-up. Have tried mouse, keyboard, headset, USB display.
If I plug a USB hub in the power light on the hub lights (presume this is hard-wired)…

I am using two Dell PowerConnect 6248 switches to connect a VMware host vSwitch. A discussion of config of Cisco switches for use with VMware advises to set physical ports connected to vSwitch with bpduguard and portfast. However, Dell switches don't have the bpduguard setting for…
Hey!
First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use:
Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows…
I have a Dell Poweredge 2950 with 2X130GB and 2X2TB drives. I need to set them up in a RAID 1 array so that the 130GB Drives are mirrored and host the OS, while the 2TB drives are mirrored and are the content drives. So I go from 4 disks, down to two, one 130GB and one 2TB. I can…
I have a Dell PowerEdge 860. Got an 2008 R2 running on it.
Here is the scenario I'm currently in:
I can boot it up and work as usuall.
But when I restart it, it just shuts down, doesn't reboot, and it won't boot up again.
Then it stays in this "mode", On/off button blinking…
