  • Wireless vs. Wired: which is faster?

    - by studiohack
I have the option of hooking up my machines to the internet either wirelessly or via ethernet cable (wired). I'm curious as to which is faster; the approximate wireless signal strength (average) is about 60%. My question is, would my internet be faster if I used ethernet, resulting in a stronger connection?

  • Is TCP/IP encapsulation MSB or LSB?

    - by Justin
Application data sent over TCP experiences multiple encapsulations: The application data is encapsulated within one or many TCP fragments The TCP fragment is encapsulated within one or many IP datagrams The IP datagram is encapsulated within one or many Ethernet frames It turns out Ethernet frames are sent most-significant byte first, and within each byte, most-significant bit first. What about the multiple encapsulations? Are they performed MSB first or LSB first?

  • Unable to keep the connecting using a wireless bridge

    - by dan
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a dell inspiron desktop (core 2 duo) and am using wicd to manage my network/wifi. I've found that the WiFi card in the machine has trouble staying connected to my router (I believe this is a function of distance between the two), so I've taken an old Belkin F5d7231 wireless router and installed dd-wrt on it to use as a wireless bridge hoping that it will have better reception. I think everything up through the wireless bridge is working OK since I have no problems accessing the internet through it with my MacBook. The problem arises when I try to hook the ubuntu machine up to the wireless bridge. It will connect for a few minutes, but it will quickly disconnect without clear triggering event; it may be more likely to disconnect if there is a heavy traffic load going over it (could be something as simple as "cat big_text_file" in an ssh session). I've tried switching from dhclient to dhcpcd without much improvement. Here is the output from the syslog when it connects: Jun 30 17:10:08 Chicabuntu dhcpcd[28278]: wlan1: dhcpcd not running Jun 30 17:10:08 Chicabuntu dhcpcd[28278]: wlan1: exiting Jun 30 17:10:08 Chicabuntu dhcpcd[28312]: eth0: dhcpcd not running Jun 30 17:10:08 Chicabuntu dhcpcd[28312]: eth0: exiting Jun 30 17:10:08 Chicabuntu avahi-daemon[1041]: Interface eth0.IPv6 no longer relevant for mDNS. • Question for class

    - by Tyler
I have a question for class that I cannot figure out, I was hoping the helpful folks at Ask Ubuntu could help. The question is basically this: Your Linux system appears to have a DHCP problem. You decide to release and renew the DHCP lease by running the following command "SUDO IFCONFIG ETH0 DOWN". The command gives an error message saying Linux doesn't recognize the command. What's the problem? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Pppoe wireless connection, Ubuntu 12.4

    - by Barbara
I recently bought a new computer (Asus 1015 cx) with Ubuntu (12.4) as preinstalled system. My problem is with the internet. The computer connects just fine to the free wifi we have at home, but in college, we have a little bit different system. There is wifi, but it is not free - everyone receives a user name and a password. I cant manage to estabilish this Pppoe connection - the computer "sees" where can it connect, but I dont know where to write my username and password. It is not the DSL connection, what I have already tried. Can you help me?

  • Share laptop Wi-Fi with router set up as access point via ethernet cables

    - by obie
I have an ADSL modem which serves as a wireless router. There's a laptop connected to it through cable. On the other room I have a laptop which is connected through the router wirelessly. Since I have other appliances that need to get connected but are not Wi-Fi capable I have another Wi-Fi router. How can I share the second laptop's Wi-Fi with the second router so that the router can then serve as an access point to give internet to my other appliances through ethernet cables? I want something like this: INTERNETMODEM (WIFI)LAPTOP 1 (WIFI)LAPTOP 2 (WIFI)Router 2 (ETHERNET)DREAMBOX & WDTV What I've tried so far is opened the admin interface of router 2 then set static IP 192.168.100.13 and disabled the DHCP. The DHCP of the main router starts with 192.168.100.1 then I hooked up router 2 with the laptop 2 through Cat5 cable but for some reason it's not working.

  • Wireless DHCP doesn't work until wired Ethernet plugged in

    - by MT_Head
A client of mine has an Asus R1F tablet running Windows XP Tablet SP3. It has an Intel 3945ABG wireless card; wired Ethernet is a Realtek something-or-other. In the past few days, it's developed an odd problem: WiFi authenticates, but can't get an address via DHCP. plug in wired Ethernet - both interfaces get good addresses unplug cable, WiFi continues to work until shutdown. Next morning, repeat process. I've tried: turning WiFi off/on (there's a slider switch) disabling/re-enabling via Device Mangler uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the 3945ABG... changing from Intel Pro/SET to Windows Wireless Zero Config (and back) restarting the router changing the static DHCP assignments at the router upgrading the router firmware, just on general principles The router/access point is pfSense 1.2.3RC1 (was 1.2.2); wireless card is Atheros-based. None of the 12 other users (5 with tablets) are having problems.

Running Win XP, has one ethernet adapter. I'd like to share Internet connection of the Box 1 with Box 2 via cable and have box 1 also sharing the Internet with other wireless devices. I don't want to buy any additional hardware. Is it possible? PS: Sorry if I'm unclear. I merely know nothing about NAT and network administration

  • Shielded ethernet cable and ethernet sockets earthing how to?

    - by ageis23
Hi I'm going to install 5 Ethernet sockets in my house using cat5e shielded cable. I decided to use this because the sockets will be on the second floor and the most practical way up is within a trunk along with some mains wiring. The cable will be terminated at the router and at the Ethernet faceplate. What can I use to earth then? The faceplate/router are both plastic hence no earth wire needed. I can't use the earth wire within the main socket can I? I figured it will be very very dangerous. I don't want to be connecting to the earth block on the mains either since I totally incompetent when it comes to mains electricity.

  • Mirror network packets from WiFi to Ethernet in an ASUS Router RT N53

    - by fazineroso
I have an ASUS RT N53 router, running the default firmware (Linux 2.6.22 with busybox and uclibc). I need to capture data packets from some Wi-Fi devices I have connected to that router (iPad and some smartphones), but the router is not forwarding any package coming from Wi-Fi devices to the Ethernet Ports. Any idea how can I proceed? Available tools in the router are iptables (no tee option, though), ebtables, brctl... Currently the ethernet and Wifi devices are forming a bridge: # brctl show bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces br0 8000.50465dc06be2 no vlan0 eth1 No ebtables rules: # ebtables -L Bridge table: filter Bridge chain: INPUT, entries: 0, policy: ACCEPT Bridge chain: FORWARD, entries: 0, policy: ACCEPT Bridge chain: OUTPUT, entries: 0, policy: ACCEPT

  • Selectively routing traffic via ethernet or wifi, with proper DNS (Mac OS X 10.6)

    - by Dan
When I'm at work, I access various intranet pages as well as the wider Internet through ethernet. However, the company LAN blocks some ports (e.g. Google Calendar). I can get to those through WiFi. So, I gave the Airport priority, and then using route add, I set up selective routing: all intranet traffic goes through the ethernet and everything else via WiFi: sudo route add 10.0.0.0/8 <intranet gateway>. However, there are a number of intranet sites that have their own DNS; i.e., hr.company.com only resolves on the intranet. The only way that I can get the DNS to work properly is to add the internal DNS server to the Airport DNS listing, however I fear that when I go elsewhere and forget, this will break things. What's the right way to get the DNS to resolve using this setup?

It seems that it is stuck in RR and I am trying to get it into the Active-backup (mode 1) state. Any ideas what would be causing this issue?

  • WiFi & GbE Slow while Both Active.

    - by Mark Tomlin
I'm having a problem with my WiFi network connection when I use my wired GbE connection concurrently on my Laptop. I'm using my WiFi for Internet access, and general web surfing and I'm using my GbE connection to connect to my PlayStation so I can stream media. The WiFi connection is via a Linksys 610N connected to my Cable Modem. Where as the GbE connection is a direct connection from my Ethernet port to the Ethernet port of the PS3 via a Cat-5 cable (no router in between this connection). As soon as I connect the cable from the PS3 to my Ethernet port on my Laptop the WiFi connection slows to a halt, but then allows for a connection to the web as normal but at much slower speeds for the things like BitTorrent that stops completely. It seems to me that Windows can't handle both connections at once. It will have both active but it can only accept and send packets on one device at one time. I can get WiFi connections to work to go to websites and the like, but once I use my GbE connection to share media between my Laptop and my PS3 the Wifi connection dies out and I no longer have access to the internet. I setup my connection on the PS3 and the Laptop following the insturctions posted here: http://forums.finalgear.com/problems/s14e01-ps3-size-problem-40642/#post1188132 And the following is the results of my ipconfig. • Computer sending data while turned off

    - by Nicklas Ansman
I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). Regards Nicklas ---------Update 1---------- The router is a D-Link DIR 655 with the latest firmware. ---------Update 2---------- I've now reinstalled ubuntu (with 10.4) and I still experience the same problem.

  • How do I connect my NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express in y Dell latitude d630?

Trying to get my 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) working with my wifi. I just installed Raring Ringtail on this dell latitude D630 and I can't get it to connect without a wifi dongle. This is what I got when I typed sudo lshw -c network: *-network description: Ethernet interface product: NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express vendor: Broadcom Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:09:00.0 logical name: eth0 version: 02 serial: 00:21:70:98:04:32 capacity: 1Gbit/s width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm vpd msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical tp 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt 1000bt-fd autonegotiation configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=tg3 driverversion=3.128 firmware=5755m-v3.29 latency=0 link=no multicast=yes port=twisted pair resources: irq:44 memory:fe8f0000-fe8fffff *-network description: Wireless interface physical id: 2 bus info: usb@2:1 logical name: wlan0 serial: 7c:dd:90:11:a0:10 capabilities: ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=rt2800usb driverversion=3.8.0-31-generic firmware=0.29 ip=10.0.0.8 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn Also, when I go to additional drivers in the software and updates settings, no proprietary drivers show up. I've tried sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer because it worked on a bunch of old Dell laptops that I converted over before, but it didn't work on this one. Is this driver even compatible with wifi? Please help.

  • Wireless and Wired Network Access at same time?

    - by grasper
At work, I use a laptop. It is a Dell Latitude D630 with Windows XP. I work in a lab environment where I need to use the Ethernet Port as a Static IP to interact with a local network (which cannot talk to the outside world). What I would like to do is use the Wireless as the internet connection so i can check email, etc at the same time I am using the ethernet network... It seems like this is not possible. Is there a piece of software or a way to configure it to allow me to do this?

  • Home networking - Wireless switch?

    - by gamers2000
I currently have a Linksys WRT160N that has a couple wireless clients and a few wired clients. We are planning to switch from DSL to cable and unfortunately, there isn't a cable point in a location close to the wired clients (i.e. the new location of the router would be too far from the wired clients to lay Ethernet cables). Thus, I was wondering if there was a wireless switch of some sort in which it would be a standard Ethernet switch that would connect to my wireless network? (This is a home network,of course.)

  • How do I turn a router into a wireless bridge

    - by Rob Cowell
I'm trying to get my HD satellite receiver connected to the internet - it has an Ethernet port on the back but my networking equipment is all upstairs. I had the idea of connecting a spare wireless router to the box with an ethernet cable and getting that wireless router to talk to my "main" wireless router (the one with the ADSL connection) to supply internet access. I believe this entails getting the router to work as a "wireless bridge", but I don't know how to do this. Currently, the ADSL line is hooked up to a NETGEAR DG834G. The other two "spare" wireless routers I have to act as the bridge are :- Huawei HG520b Netgear DGN2000 BT Homehub I'd prefer not to change the "main" router (cos I'm used to its web admin UI) - does anyone know a way I can achieve the connectivity I require with the equipment I have?
