• Create an image of a CentOS system

  I provide a server (and site) to a client via Rackspace Cloud Hosting, and my client wants to now host the entire thing within his own account. Since it's not possible to just transfer the ownership, I need to somehow create an image of the machine via SSH which I can then use on a new server. Is this possible, and does anyone know of a way of doing this. Note I am talking about virtualised machines here, but I only have access to the virtualised partition and not the system as a whole.

• What's the advantage of synchronizing UID/GID across Linux machines?

  Before I plunge into the depths of how to synchronize UID's/GID's across my different Linux machines, I would like to know what is actually the benefit? I know that this keeps file synchronization relatively easy (as ownership is "naturally" retained). However this can also be achieved otherwise depending on the transmission service. Is there anything else that would benefit from consistent UIDs/GIDs?

• openssh sftp chroot

  I chrooted a user to the directory /var/www/upload using ChrootDirectory /var/www/upload in my etc/ssh/sshd_config. The permissions of all the files in var/www/upload is 755 and owner is root:upload_user. However, I still cannot modify the files. (Getting a permission denied error.) Is it possible if I create a subdirectory with ownership upload_user:upload_user. Is it, by any means, possible to allow my chrooted user to write to his / directory?

• Team Leaders & Authors - Manage and Report Workflow using "Print an Outline" in UPK

  Did you know you can "print an outline?" You can print any outline or portion of an outline. Why might you want to "print an outline" in UPK... Have you ever wondered how many topics you have recorded, how many of your topics are ready for review, or even better, how many topics are complete! Do you need to report your project status to management? Maybe you just like to have a copy of your outline to refer to during development. Included in this output is the outline structure as well as the layout defined in the Details View of the Outline Editor. To print an outline, you must open either a module or section in the Outline Editor. A set of default data columns is automatically included in the output; however, you can configure which columns you want to appear in the report by switching to the Details view and customizing the columns. (To learn more about customizing your columns refer to the Add and Remove Columns section of the Content Development.pdf guide) To print an outline from the Outline Editor: 1. Open a module or section document in the Outline Editor. 2. Expand the documents to display the details that you want included in the report. 3. On the File menu, choose Print and use the toolbar icons to print, view, or save the report to a file. Personally, I opt to save my outline in Microsoft Excel. Using the delivered features of Microsoft Excel you can add columns of information, such as development notes, to your outline or you can graph and chart your Project status. As mentioned above you can configure what columns you want to appear in the outline. When utilizing the Print an Outline feature in conjunction with the Managing Workflow features of the UPK Multi-user instance you as a Team Lead or Author can better report project status. Managing Workflow: The Properties toolpane contains special properties that allow authors to track document status or State as well as assign Document Ownership. Assign Content State The State property is an editable property for communicating the status of a document. This is particularly helpful when collaborating with other authors in a development team. Authors can assign a state to documents from the master list defined by the administrator. The default list of States includes (blank), Not Started, Draft, In Review, and Final. Administrators can customize the list by adding, deleting or renaming the values. To assign a State value to a document: 1. Make sure you are working online. 2. Display the Properties toolpane. 3. Select the document(s) to which you want to assign a state. Note: You can select multiple documents using the standard Windows selection keys (CTRL+click and SHIFT+click). 4. In the Workflow category, click in the State cell. 5. Select a value from the list. Assign Document Ownership In many enterprises, multiple authors often work together developing content in a team environment. Team leaders typically handle large projects by assigning specific development responsibilities to authors. The Owner property allows team leaders and authors to assign documents to themselves and other authors to track who is responsible for a specific document. You view and change document assignments for a document using the Owner property in the Properties toolpane. To assign a document owner: 1. Make sure you are working online. 2. On the View menu, choose Properties. 3. Select the document(s) to which you want to assign document responsibility. Note: You can select multiple documents using the standard Windows selection keys (CTRL+click and SHIFT+click). 4. In the Workflow category, click in the Owner cell. 5. Select a name from the list. • HFS+ hard drive being mounted as read only

  This is a recurring problem and occurs a few times a week. I have an external hard drive which is hfs+. Every couple of weeks, for no obviuous reason, when I mount it by pluggin it in to my Ubuntu 11.10, it is read only and I can't copy any files into it. I gksudo nautlius and change the ownership and it magically works in some time. But returns to the read only state soon in a few hours-days without any rhyme or reason. Right now my fstab doesn't have any entry for my hard drive. What gives? What in the world is going on with Linux/HFS+? This is frustrating. I can't reformat my hard drive because I have almost a terrabyte of data in it and no receptacle to hold it while I reformat it.

• how to set owner and permission to a cryptsetup made device?

  I have an encrypted loopback volume. I need to mount and umount manually the volume so I use cryptsetup luksOpen and cryptsetup luksClose . However, When I invoke this command it pops up the /dev/mapper device under all the sessions under gnome/xfce/kde/unity ... And then it let the user to mount (with password), expulse and unmount the volume. It's quite annoying in a multi user server (you are working on your files and the volume is being unmounted). How can I define ownership and permission on the device ? I've tried chown and chmod approach witch gives nothing. Cryptsetup doesn't have any options that let you do that. crypttab auto mount the filesystem on boot witch is unwanted (only manual mount)

  I am really new to ubuntu (12.04) to automount my drive I added this line to fstab /dev/sda4 /media/FF15-ED92 vfat defaults 0 0 But now when I want to delete a directory or a file it doesn't delete like using del key of keyboard so right clicked on that directories and files but there was no option to delete and move to trash was also not clickable. So how can I give myself permissions to do this. Also I can't do this on my pen drive also. I tried this but nothing happened sudo chmod 777 /media/44gb if I change from chmod to chown then it gives that changing ownership of `/media/44gb': Operation not permitted

• How to keep "dot files" under version control?

  Etckeeper is a great tool for keeping track of changes to your configuration files in /etc A few key things about it really stand out. It can be used with a wide variety of VCSs: git, mercurial, darcs, or bzr. It also does auto commits daily and whenever you install, remove or upgrade package. It also keeps track of file permissions and user/group ownership metadata. I would also like to keep my "dot files" in my home directory under version control as well, preferably bazaar. Does anyone know if a tool like etckeeper exists for this purpose? Worst case, I imagine that a simple cron job running bzr add && bzr ci once or twice a day along with adding ~/Documents, ~/Music, ect to the .bzrignore Anyone already doing something similar with a script? While I'd prefer bazaar, other options might be interesting.

  Hey, I'm working for a company full-time and myself part-time. I started learning the Mac OS/Cocoa/Objective-C at work, and then I got the "Brilliant Idea" that I'd like to program for the iPhone. The iPhone stuff is going well, but I'm earning money there because I'm applying skills I learned on the job. What is commonly considered violating company policy on things like this? Is there any danger of the company claiming 'ownership' of my side-job? If I leave the company, could they ask me to stop working at my side business? The company and my iphone stuff are in completely different "areas" but I'm still concerned. What can I do to make sure? What else should I be wary of? Has anyone run into bad stuff like this before? Someone found a game I made on the Internet, and expressed interest in buying it. We agreed upon a price, and, in the meantime, I removed the game's source from the Internet, just to be sure. Now, I'm wondering what to do next. These are the terms: He gets the game's source code, and only that, without the graphics (which weren't made by me). He gets the right to develop and sell the game. I get to keep the ownership of the original game, meaning that I can use it in my portfolio when applying for jobs, for example. The game gets to stay on its original site. But I am not sure how can I legally realize this. Which license can I use?

• What is the proper way to setup Google Apps email accounts for a subdomain?

  Let's say I've registered domain.com at enom and set it up to use Google Apps for email by rerouting DNS to enom's servers and editing the MX records there. That works flawlessly. Now let's say I want to have email at a subdomain for that same site. I already have a working subdomain at the host, but I want to catch email traffic at enom before it gets that far. I've set up Google Apps as a new account for the subdomain, successfully verified domain ownership, and now they want me to update MX records. What's the right format? For domain.com, I just put @ for the hostname, and then provided the Address and Pref values that Google gave me. I tried putting subdomain.domain.com as new values under hostname for the subdomain, but that doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?

  I've never found the ideal way to perform code reviews and yet often my customers require them. Each customer seems to do them in a different way and I've never felt satisfied in any of them. What has been the most effective way for you to perform code reviews? For example: Is one person regarded as the gatekeeper for quality and reviews the code, or do the team own the standard? Do you do review code as a team exercise using a projector? Is it done in person, via email or using a tool? Do you eschew reviews and use things like pair programming and collective code ownership to ensure code quality?

• VMware sharing folders between Win7 (host) and Ubuntu (guest)

  What is the best way to share a folder between Win7 64bit (host) and Ubuntu 10.10 (guest) in VMware player? I can setup the sharing just fine (using vmware-tools), but all shared files are root:root owned with 777 permission set. Which, well, sucks. What can I do to have shared files with preserved ownership and permissions? I'm guessing I would need some kind of a file container, that would get mounted in Ubuntu as a block device (if so, it would need to be dynamic, i.e. expand with size of contained files). But maybe there is a better solution?

• Blog not even ranking for exact title match, after domain has been dropped twice [on hold]

  Consider a blog, related to blogging and SEO. The domain has been dropped (expired) 2 times before acquisition. The current owner is the 3rd owner of the domain since 5 months. Blog posts are not ranking, even for exact titles. Google+ or other shares will show up instead of the content. Some blog posts are not even indexed. Let us TAKE that it gets around 7 organic visits / day. Dropped domain, less likely used for spam (WayBack machine (2 Reframed drops) 3 captures since 2004, Don't know whether there was Email spam) (But no manual actions in WMT, so no reconsideration request). What could be the reason for this? How can Google be told that ownership is changed and the domain is now spam-free? Would this domain be salvageble, or does this only change after relocating to another domain?
