• Business Analyst role in development process

  I work as a business analyst and I currently oversee much of the development efforts of an internal project. I'm responsible for the requirements, specs, and overall testing. I work closely with the developers (onshore and offshore). The offshore team produces all of the reports. Version 1.0 had a 9 month development cycle and I had about 4-5 months to test all the reports. There was the usual back and forth to get the implementation right. Version 2.0 had a much shorter development cycle (3 months). I received the first version of the reports about 3 weeks ago and noticed a lot of things wrong with it. Many of the requirements were wrong and the performance of the queries was horrendous at 5x - 6x longer than it should have been. The onshore lead developer was out and did not supervise the offshore development team in generating the reports. Without consulting management, I took a look at the SQL in the reports and was able to improve performance greatly (by a factor of 6x) which is acceptable for this version. I sent the updated queries as guidelines to the offshore team and told them they should look at doing X instead of Y to improve performance and also to fix some specific logic issues. I then spoke to my managers about this because it doesn't feel right that I was developing SQL queries, but given our time crunch I saw no other way. We were able to fix the issue quite fast which I'm happy with. Current situation: the onshore managers aren't too pleased that the offshore team did not code for performance. I know there are some things I could have done better throughout this process and I do not in any way consider myself a programmer. My question is, if an offshore team that works apart from the onshore project resources fails to deliver an acceptable release, is it appropriate to clean up their work to meet a deadline? What kind of problems could this create in the future?

• Best Web Site Copying Software

  I just wanted to get some opinions on the best "web site copying" software out there (free or commercial is fine). I have a site that I've recently become responsible for managing, and the previous consultant has not provided operating system access. As such, the plan is to re-host the web site. I realize there are a lot of different issues to consider in doing this. However, I don't have much choice in the matter now. The plan is to use web site copying software (ala HTTrack) to "rip" the web site, and then modify what is downloaded back in to a maintainable site. This, of course, involves HTML, css, javascript, etc on the front-end. I'd like to recover as much of the site as possible to make re-creating it as easy as possible.

The company told me to create proposal include the price how much is the application is so they can process the check for me. The person who give me this project is the company supervisor and also a former supply chain supervisor in my employer before which i work also in some of their applications back then.So i want to be fair. This is my first time to create an application as a sideline so i really never experienced pricing a software even though i am working as full time web developer in a big company. • My Rhythmbox plugin can't meet the Ubuntu Software Center "my-app" requirements

  At http://developer.ubuntu.com/publish/my-apps-packages/ the following technical requirements are cited: Technical requirements In order for your application to be distributed in the Software Centre it must: Be in one, self-contained directory when installed Be able to be installed into the /opt/ directory (*) Be executable by all users from the /opt/ directory (**) Write all configuration settings to ~/.config/ (This can be one file or a directory containing multiple configuration files) A Rhythmbox plugin cannot satisfy any of these requirements. Rhythmbox has compiled-in locations where it looks for installed plugins. So, is there no way for me to publish my app in Ubuntu Software Center? Would it have to go into Universe repository (which would require tremendously more work and political maneuvering to get it accepted)? I already have all the Debian package infrastructure built for it, so I have made a PPA for it.

To my mind the following things will need to be done Proper understanding of requirements Setting down coding practices and guidelines Regular code reviews to ensure the guidelines are being adhered to Revisiting the requirements phase and making necessary changes to design based on client inputs if there are any changes to requirements Proper documentation of what is being done in code Proper documentation of requirements and changes to them Last but not the least, implementing the design via object oriented code where appropriate Did I miss anything? Background: Broadening my last question, there is a request for tender for a software system that's open and I have decided to take it on. I am a software developer & engineer by profession and, in this tender process, I have to put on the pricing for my bid. I have been provided a documentation consisting of functional and non-functional requirements only. I have to put a project manager's cap on and think of all aspects, e.g. cost for implementation for the project, resources needed, etc. My question is: Is there a project framework that I can follow that breaks the project cycle into steps and corresponding cost aspect or how would I go about best calculating/approximating the cost for the project?

• Developing OpenGLES2 apps for Ubuntu Software Center

  I have a game for iOS and Android that I now want to port to Ubuntu. I plan to distribute it with Ubuntu Software Center. Preferrably for free with an in-app-purchase. My codebase is currently based on OpenGL ES2 and written in C++. I could rewrite to OpenGL, but having progammable shaders is a must. Fixed pipeline OpenGL will not suffice. Is there a feature in place that lets you specify OpenGL requirements in the Ubuntu Software Center? I want to make sure that only Ubuntu users with compatible hardware will be able to download my game. Any APIs I could use for getting a suitable OpenGL context, or am I expected to just use glx for this? Or is the use of GTK mandatory?

I suppose the directly-scanned versions must have been processed by some Optical Character Recognition software. So I would like to know what are the recommended Optical Character Recognition softwares? Especially those that are either for Ubuntu or free? If those for Windows are far more superior, please let me know as well. I am particularly interested in those OCRs that can accept a scanned pdf file as input and still produce as output another pdf file that looks the same as the input one but with its text copyable. • How do I completly remove software? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Why are the hidden settings-folders not deleted when purging an application? Ok I have 8GB on my desktop dual booting win 7. I installed a few games, assualtcube, tremolous, and spring. But I had removed them using 'remove --purge' and only to find they are still lingering and purge does not well truly purge them. I need them completely gone and not secretly hogging space when I purged them. How can i completely remove software, like it is gone and not going to take any more of my precious space? Shrinking 7 and growing Ubuntu is not an answer I am accepting, i want to know how to completely remove software. Thank you for your time and your answers.

• Ubuntu Software Center (10.04LTS) Missing Packages

  I recently downgraded from 11.10 to 10.04LTS for compatibility and support of specific development tools. The Ubuntu Software center is missing many packages that I had access to in 11.10, most notably LibreOffice. (Also development tools.) Is there a way to update software sources to find the missing packages? (Or are they incompatible with 10.04?) Synaptic does not have libre either. I feel like I am working with a gimped version of USC.

I am just wondering about that, because everyone knows that they can get this software running for free (if it is done illegally). Why don't they just use a cracked version?   not exactly sure where I should post this but I have a question about filing for software patents. If I have an idea for a UI feature, how do I go about patenting that feature. I don't have any code written and I'm afraid my coding skills aren't up to snuff in order to code the thing I imagined but aside from that, can anyone give me any general guidance and info? • Software Center crashes and terminal errors

  *note*I'm a new user to Ask Ubuntu and I've only recently switched to Ubuntu 12.04. When I try to open the software center (Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit) it will flash open, load for maybe 1-2 seconds, and then close. When i try using: sudo apt-get purge software center sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade I get this within the terminal: Reading package lists... Error! E: Problem parsing dependency Depends E: Error occurred while processing printer-driver-hpcups (NewVersion2) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. *The problem fixed itself after I shut down my laptop for the night and turned it back on to check my e-mail this afternoon. If anyone could tell me how to fix this problem in the future please do, I would like to learn about these kind of things because i don't plan on putting windows on my laptop again :P *

  This is the situation: Working on (the next version of) a Unity quicklist editor, I would like to add a reliable way of "restarting" launcher icons. To do so, I need to remove the icon (editing gsettings) and replace it on the same position. So far no problem. However, if the application in question is running, user will possibly lose data, as the application will quit when it's icon is removed from the launcher. What I need is a reliable way to find an application's process name, to let the editor check in the list of running processes if the application is running, and send a warning message to the user that the icon can not be restarted if the application is running. What i did so far is make the editor look into the desktop file, to read the command, also read the command, stripped from the directory section, and furthermore look into possible remote scripts the desktop file command might refer to, looking for strings starting with "./" Although te method seems to work well with all applications I tested it on, I have the feeling there must be an easier way to cover the problem in an "all in one" way... Is there? also suggestions to catch more exceptional situations are welcome!

  Hello, I'm the lead developer/architect wanna-be on a J2EE based system/platform at work that serves both real estate and automotive markets. The systems consists of a set of database back ends, web services and two web clients. The platform ends up serving 3 different products: an internal vehicle inventory system for use by company analysts, an external dealer management system (commercialized product), and a real estate inventory system (commercialized). In other words, it follows a software product lines approach....My question is, I'm having trouble communicating to other technical and some business people how this platform architecture is one system that serves multiple markets (by leveraging some existing assets combined with minor modifications)....Is there a formal modeling language that can simplify communicating this intent? I should note that I haven't read much about software product lines, so I'm not sure if there is actually a standard modeling approach to SPL that i'm not aware of....I'm also interested in knowing if there are special configuration management practices for such systems. thanks,

• Applying to a company while personally working on a comparable project

  That's going to be an unusual question but here it goes. I'm entertaining the thought to send my docs to a place which develops a large web project of a social type. Social meaning people, communities, interaction and all that usual stuff. The issue is that I myself am working on something that falls into the category of social in my private time. Now the question. Is it wise to apply there under these circumstances? I think there may be issues of intellectual ownership if I develop something similar that exists or will exist in that company's work. On the other hand, the web of full of social places (even this site is one of them), many of them utilize the same ideas and move in the same direction and it seems to work for everyone. It's hard to come up with something which hasn't been tried yet by somebody else so it's all basically reuse of the commonly available ideas and experience. What I'm working on is not a functional equivalent, it's rather largely off. There may be some intersections, but on a large scale this is not an equivalent. And whatever features might coincide, they already exist everywhere on the web anyway. Also technology stacks are entirely different so the issue with directly copying out parts of the code is probably not applicable. I plan to say it up front that I'm engaged in a personal project of mine and let them see if it represents a problem for them. What do you think? Am I making things up or is there really an issue?

• Software management for 2 programmers

  Hi all, me and my very good friend do a small bussiness. We have company and we develop web apps using Scala. We have started 3 months ago and we have a lot of work now. We cannot afford to employ another programmer because we can't pay him now. Until now we try to manage entire developing process very simply. We use excel sheets for simple bug tracking and we work on client requests on the fly. We have no plan for next week or something similar. But now I find it very inefficient and useless. I am trying to find some rules or some methodology for small team or for only two guys. For example Scrum is, imo, unadapted for us. There are a lot of roles (ScrumMaster, Product Owner, Team...) and it seems overkill. Can you something advise me? Have you any experiences with software management in small teams? Is any methodology of current agile development fitten for pair of programmers? Is there any software management for simple bug tracking, maybe wiki or time management for two coders? thanks a lot for sharing.
