  I am having trouble with the TrippLite Poweralert Console Program. It is a OpenSUSE version because there is no version for Ubuntu or Debain. I install the program, it works, but as soon as i restart my computer, i assume something happens to the files, but when i try to load the program after reboot, it does not recognize my UPS. • Mercurial client error 255 and HTTP error 404 when attempting to push large files to server

  Problem: When attempting to push a changeset that contains 6 large files (.exe, .dmg, etc) to my remote server my client (MacHG) is reporting the error: "Error During Push. Mercurial reported error number 255: abort: HTTP Error 404: Not Found" What does the error even mean?! The only thing unique (that I can tell) about this commit is the size, type, and filenames of the files. How can I determine which exact file within the changeset is failing? How can I delete the corrupt changeset from the repository? Someone reported using "mq" extensions, but it looks overly complicated for what I'm trying to achieve. Background: I can push and pull the following: source files, directories, .class files and a .jar file to and from the server, using both MacHG and toirtoise HG. I successfully committed to my local repository the addition for the first time the 6 large .exe, .dmg etc installer files (about 130Mb total). In the following commit to my local repository, I removed ("untracked" / forget) the 6 files causing the problem, however the previous (failing) changeset is still queued to be pushed to the server (i.e. my local host is trying to push the "add" and then the "remove" to the remote server - and keep aligned with the "keep everything in history" philosophy of the source control system). I can commit .txt .java files etc using TortoiseHG from Windows PCs. I haven't actually testing committing or pushing the same large files using TortoiseHG. Please help! Setup: Client applications = MacHG v0.9.7 (SCM 1.5.4), and TortoiseHG v1.0.4 (SCM 1.5.4) Server = HTTPS, IIS7.5, Mercurial 1.5.4, Python 2.6.5, setup using these instructions: http://www.jeremyskinner.co.uk/mercurial-on-iis7/ In IIS7.5 the CGI handler is configured to handle ALL verbs (not just GET, POST and HEAD).   Hi, I am using Ubutu 10.04. I have some apps that create a few temporary files in /tmp/<file> as part of their shutdown process. I want to inspect those files when the apps are closed in the event of a system shutdown. However, when the system comes up again I find that all temporary files have been deleted. How can I ask the system not to clear the files in /tmp/ on shutdown?

• How important is it to install on the program files folder?

  In a proper installation of an average software, its executables would be in the program files folder; its user data in the user's application data folder; it's non user specific data in the all users application data folder; and it should usually be able to run under non-administrative privileges. These guidelines could easily be ignored on XP, but they are an issue on Vista and 7 due to UAC. We're on the verge of releasing a major version of our software. It's a CMS, used by our clients as their main work tool, and their IT staff are well familiar with it. If we want to be fully compatible with Windows 7, we have to make quite a few changes, and we're already on a tight schedule. Question is: we can easily have our clients install our software outside of program files, or have them run it as administrators. I think it's wrong, but I need some ammunition: why should we install on program files, with all the limitations that come with it?

• Can't copy files with 'additional permissions' to ext4 drive -- files that have @ after permissions,

  I am copying files from Snow Leopard to a mounted ext4 share via Samba, that's on a Fedora machine. Some files cannot be copied, and give this error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items. I've noticed that the files that can't be copied have an @ at the end of their permissions whien I do 'ls -l' in the command line. For example, I can copy the second file but not the first: -rwxrwxrwx@ 1 miles staff 1448 May 14 22:55 test.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 miles staff 136 Apr 5 17:06 image.psd.zip From what I've found, the @ means the file has 'additional properties'. Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue so I can copy the files to the fileshare?? Thanks!

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • Uploading multiple files simultaneously with Flex

  I have been working on a flex uploader, where the user can select multiple files. It works fine when the files are uploaded in a queue (one at a time), however as soon as I try to have it upload 2 files at once I run into issues. It seems that files will often lock up, and either stay at 1% until every other file is uploaded, or just not complete at all. There is never more than one file uploading at a time. Is there some issue with calling .upload on multiple files at once in Flex?

  I'm about to remove an old backup directory, but before doing so I'd like to make sure that all these files exist in a newer directory. Is there a tool for this? Or am I best off doing this "manually" using find, md5sum, sorting, comparing, etc? Clarification: If I have the following directory listings /path/to/old_backup/dir1/fileA /path/to/old_backup/dir1/fileB /path/to/old_backup/dir2/fileC and /path/to/new_backup/dir1/fileA /path/to/new_backup/dir2/fileB /path/to/new_backup/dir2/fileD then fileA and fileB exists in new_backup (fileA in its original directory, and fileB has moved from dir1 to dir2). fileC on the other hand is missing in new_backup and fileD has been created. In this situation I'd like the output to be something like fileC exists in old_backup, but not in new_backup.

• vs10 not deploying all required files - then not over-writing updated files

  I'm in the habit of deploying to alternating folders (/inetpub/wwwroot/mySite & /inetpub/wwwroot/mySite2) so if something unexpected happens with the deploy i can quickly swap back to a previous version just by changing the path in IIS So i was deploying an MVC2 webapp to a empty folder figuring that VS would send up all the files it needs. Not even close. Initially, it didn't even upload a couple required nHibernate.dlls. Later, after manually copying files referenced in the thrown exceptions, i just copied all the files from the previous compile and then re-published over the top expecting VS to over-write the changed files. Failed that too. No reports of errors by VS....just failed to over-write a number of pre-existing (but changed/updated) files. Hard to believe these kinds of errors (and lack of feedback that errors were encountered) in a state of the art tool like VS. Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. I'm using VisualSVN for source control and connect to my colocated server via a VPN-based mapped network drive (so I can use FileSystem to publish). (both of which can complicate file properties) VS08 had more choices for which files it would send up - i found i needed to use the 'All files in source' on an initial deployment, the 'Replace Matching'. If I choose 'delete all existing...' I'd be back to square 1 and have to deploy with the 'All files in source project folder'. But VS10 doesn't have the 'All files in source project folder. I ended up manually copying the files - which seems not right in the extreme. Are these known issues others have to deal with? What's best practice for deploying a web-app? thx

  I am trying to get all users of particular notebooks to make the users h drive offline. i know you can do it manually but is there a way to set this value somewhere so that users dont have to do it themselves? I am running 2008r2 domain controllers and windows 7 clients. I have folder redirection enabled but i want to make the users h: available to them when they are offline. I know the group policies are located in the computer configurationPoliciesadministrative templatesNetwork but there doesnt seem to be any place to select which folders/drives will be offline files without a users input. So if file1.bin is 00 90 00 11 in binary form and file2.bin is 00 91 00 10 I want to get something like 00000001 90 91 00000003 11 10 What is the easiest way to accomplish the goal? Standard tool? Some third-party tool? (Note: cmp -l should be killed with fire, it uses a decimal system for offsets and octal for bytes.)

• Our GoDaddy web server is drowning in temp files!!

  We have a virtual dedicated server with a fairly large amount of traffic. We use GoDaddy using CPanel. We have 10GIG of space of which about 80% is not our content but logs and server utilities. Godaddy support is evasive and they are trying to encourage us to migrate to new service with 15GIG. Reviewing the large files we found the following: We have a ton old TMP files at this directory. /public_html/files/TMP/FILE_PERSISTANCE_PROVIDER: (no access) some large files in these directories. /usr/local/apache/logs/ - suphp_log (220M) - access_log (7M) - error_log (5M) /usr/local/apache/domlogs/ (no access) /usr/local/cpanel/ (no access) /usr/local/cpanel-rollback /tmp Questions: What can we safely delete or truncate? How can we change permissions on files with no access to delete? Is there utility to monitor and clean up temp files Other files/programs that we can delete? thanks!

  /media/A and /media/B should be identical, but I want to confirm before deleting one. Duplicate file finders don't work, because they'll find two copies of the same file within B, for instance. I only want to confirm that every file in one is identical to the other. diff -qr /media/A/ /media/B/ seems to work, but the output is cluttered with garbage like diff: /media/A//etc/alternatives/ControlPanel: No such file or directory and File /media/A//dev/tty8 is a character special file while file /media/B//dev/tty8 is a character special file I can suppress the former with 2> /dev/null, but I don't know about the latter. rsync -avn /media/A/ /media/B/ also produces a bunch of clutter, like "skipping non-regular file". How can I compare the two trees and just make sure that all the real files exist in both and are identical?

• Resources on learning to program in machine code?

  I'm a student, fresh into programming and loving it, from Java to C++ and down to C. I moved backwards to the barebones and thought to go further down to Assembly. But, to my surprise, a lot of people said it's not as fast as C and there is no use. They suggested learning either how to program a kernel or writing a C compiler. My dream is to learn to program in binary (machine code) or maybe program bare metal (program micro-controller physically) or write bios or boot loaders or something of that nature. The only possible thing I heard after so much research is that a hex editor is the closest thing to machine language I could find in this age and era. Are there other things I'm unaware of? Are there any resources to learn to program in machine code? Preferably on a 8-bit micro-controller/microprocessor. This question is similar to mine, but I'm interested in practical learning first and then understanding the theory.

• Why am I am unable to open exe files?

  It doesn't matter what disk I use, it can not open the program. I keep getting the following error: Archive: /media/xxxxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe [/media/xxxxxxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/xxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe or /media/xxxxxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/xxxxxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe.ZIP, period. Any ideas?

• Managing large binary files with git

  Hi there. I am looking for opinions of how to handle large binary files on which my source code (web application) is dependent. We are currently discussing several alternatives: Copy the binary files by hand. Pro: Not sure. Contra: I am strongly against this, as it increases the likelihood of errors when setting up a new site/migrating the old one. Builds up another hurdle to take. Manage them all with git. Pro: Removes the possibility to 'forget' to copy a important file Contra: Bloats the repository and decreases flexibility to manage the code-base and checkouts/clones/etc will take quite a while. Separate repositories. Pro: Checking out/cloning the source code is fast as ever, and the images are properly archived in their own repository. Contra: Removes the simpleness of having the one and only git repository on the project. Surely introduces some other things I haven't thought about. What are your experiences/thoughts regarding this? Also: Does anybody have experience with multiple git repositories and managing them in one project? Update: The files are images for a program which generates PDFs with those files in it. The files will not change very often(as in years) but are very relevant to a program. The program will not work without the files. Update2: I found a really nice screencast on using git-submodule at GitCasts.
