• How do I get my programs to communicate with each other

  I'm basically just getting started with programming. The problem I have with progressing is that I have a hard time learning stuff just for the sake of knowing them - I do better when there's a problem to be solved or a task to be completed so I can learn 'on the job'. So I'm interested in starting some interesting project. I know the basics of Python, Java, Matlab and some C++ aswell and I know enough about microcontrollers to make LED blink etc. The type of stuff I'm looking for is for example scraping some weather forecast site (with Python) and outputting the chance of rain to a LCD display, or a program that makes chrome open and log in to facebook if I say "HAL, time for facebook", or more generally, a program that reads serial/USB input, looks for certain sequences and sends instructions to some other program if it finds one. Do you open some kind of shared stream in which one program reads and one writes? What do I need to read up on to do accomplish this myself? I have no experience with linux or the linux terminal, but looking over peoples shoulders makes me suspect that's what people use. Is that correct?

• My computer has begun to restart after I upgraded

  After updating to Ubuntu 11.04. My computer started to turn off and reboot. This happens about every half hour, I think there is a tendency to happen when I work with multiple applications at once. It is both my Desktop and Labtop. I has installed- BOINE Manager, PlayOnLinix GIMP, Qt, Wine, VLC-player, Blender 2.57 Otherwise is all as default. • Still can't mount windows 8 drive after restart

  After following the instructions in other posts, I am still getting the same error when I try to mount my Windows 8 drive in Ubuntu 14.04 on a dual boot system. I have disabled fast start after shutdown, hybrid hibernation, and the preinstalled Asus Instant On service. I have tried restarting Windows rather than shutting down. In all cases I get the same error message, namely: Error mounting /dev/sda4 at /media/jesse/OS: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sda4" "/media/jesse/OS"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: Windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda4': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option. I did not have the same issue before upgrading from Ubuntu 12 to 14. For what it's worth my computer is supposedly a "hybrid" with an SSD drive installed, although I can't see that the SSD drive is being used at all with my present settings. Any thoughts?

• Restart and/or graphics problem in Ubuntu 12.04

  I having been using 12.04 for a couple of months now, with v. little problems. The other day I restarted my computer, and though I think it rebooted, the screen would be black. I could not even get a visual from a live cd. Finally, I was able to get it to load, but the resolution has been completely off. The computer thinks I have a laptop screen, when I actually have a ViewSonic VP2330wb, and it detects only two resolutions. And still, I have a problem with rebooting. If the screen locks after I leave it for a while, I can't get a visual back, and then when I force a shutdown, it takes 3 times for me to get a grub screen. Then I have to boot in recovery mode, and then finally in normal mode, but the screen is still always off. • GLSL, all in one or many shader programs?

  I am doing some 3D demos using OpenGL and I noticed that GLSL is somewhat "limited" (or is it just me?). Anyway I have many different types of materials. Some materials have ambient and diffuse color, some materials have ambient occlusion map, some have specular map and bump map etc. Is it better to support everything in one vertex/fragment shader pair or is it better to create many vertex/fragment shaders and select them based on currently selected material? What is the usual shader strategy in OpenGL or D3D?

  I don't have internet access at my home and it takes me about a half hour to ride my bike to the library. I have downloaded .deb files to try to install at my home computer but everyone I have downloaded says it can't install because it depends on package X. The next day I will download package X and it will require package Y. Is there anyway to find out what ALL the sub-dependencies are for deb files? I have tried to boot from USB or External Hard drive on the library computers but the security settings prevent this. Also, I do not know anyone with a Linux computer.

• interface changed after restart on Xubuntu

  Something happened a few times after using Xubuntu since 1 month ago. A few times after i restarted my laptop the interface was totally changed. The icons from the panel were different and almost everything. It looked great, it had a grey interface, very nice icons, buttons were bigger and everything looked great. I have no idea what happened, i tried to find the same interface/theme from Settings Manager but without succes. Can anyone please tell me what happened or how can i use the grey interface? Can i (in any client) add rules (filters) to an ftp program to avoid upload of certain files or folders? For example: Expression web creates those annoying _vti_cnf folders, or, certain folders in which i have the original version of a picture without a watermark that i don't want to upload. Example, i have a folder A, that has sub folders "original" and "current", i would like to add a filter, so every time i select A to be uploaded, "original" wouldn't go, but "current would".

• Compiz Expo freezes programs

  I'm using 11.10, and when I use the Expo feature and then return to a active workspace, any open windows are click-able, but they don't actually change. Here's what I mean: In Google chrome, after Expo, I can click on links/new tab button, etc. However, though the mouse will spin and the program is actually working, the program won't update visibly unless I minimise/restore (or vice-versa) the entire window. Edit: I've found others who have the same problem (unrelated to Expo). It would seem that though the program remains running, its content won't refresh unless it is first maximized then minimized. Edit: Problem solved by resetting compiz.

  I have been searching the internet forever now, but I am using wubi on a windows 8.1 laptop. I have properly burned the newest version of Ubuntu, I have never done this before, so please put the answer in simple terms. When I open wubi it comes up with these options: -reboot now -manually reboot later I put reboot now, and it reboots with no changes or differences to my operating system. The installer does not pop up upon rebooting and I have no idea what to try. I am a totally newbie at this. Please help me. I am using an Asus computer.

  I would like to ask if there is any good program for ubuntu 12.04 to organize a library of books.I want to mention that I also have books written in my native language (Greek) and I have books written in other languages like English,French, etc too .So basically I need an application which can fetch information from databases for Greek books. For example - Adding a Greek (ISBN) book database source and when I type the ISBN of the book in the program ,it should find the book from that databases. Is this possible?   I'm running Ubuntu version 12.04 on Dell D620 laptop and have been for months. Everything has been working fine until a week ago, when suddenly every time I close the laptop and open it again, the program in use blinks each time I make a keystroke. Only the program blinks, not the whole screen. Rebooting solves the issue until I close the lid again. I have installed all the updates recommended in the package manager. Clues?

(failure-report is not working and crashing too after correct password). this concerns: medibuntu, mediaplayer, totem, mplayer and xine (probably too many installed and I should decide for only one ? - but it was no problem in 12.04 ?).

  When I provide the following struct definition in linked frag and vert shaders, my phone (Samsung Vibrant / Android 2.2) complains that the definition differs. struct Light { mediump vec3 _position; lowp vec4 _ambient; lowp vec4 _diffuse; lowp vec4 _specular; bool _isDirectional; mediump vec3 _attenuation; // constant, linear, and quadratic components }; uniform Light u_light; I know the struct is identical because its included from another file. These shaders work on a linux implementation and on my Android 3.0 tablet. Both shaders declare "precision mediump float;" The exact error is: Uniform variable u_light type/precision does not match in vertex and fragment shader Am I doing anything wrong here, or is my phone's implementation broken? Any advice (other than file a bug report?)

  I saw a pop up which said 'updates are available' so I clicked it. I completely forgot that the installation was incomplete, I logged off. NOw when I came back, it told me to do a partial update. I read the internet for information, partial update wasn't the safest thing for me. I tried to log in to skype, it said another skype may exist. That wasn't true, Skype wasn't opened. • ubuntu 12.10 slow application load upon restart

  new ubuntu user. after boot (boot is quite fast), opening applications such as firefox, libra, system settings, takes close to 10 seconds to open. after the application is loaded in RAM, the application opens fine. the system feels snappy, quick. when i have two FIREFOX open, unity is snappy in showing me the two windows side by side. but upon bootup, loading the application takes 10 seconds. there is not much hdd activity. fresh install. its the same for system settings and browsing system settings. when system settings is opened for the first time (10 second), and i click for example Color, it will take quite long to open the color settings. hardware: i3 4gb ram radeon 5770 250gb sata gigabyte h55m motherboard i am using ubuntu straight out of the box, no propriety drivers. 64 bit. i have reinstalled OS, and still the same.

  I've downloadad the latest XAMPP file, to install it into Ubuntu 13.04. After downloading the file, I just can run it. I've double click it (and I've tried right click and clicking "open", whith the same result). All the answer I get is this message: Could not display “xampp-linux-1.8.3-1-installer.run”. There is no application installed for “executable” files. Do you want to search for an application to open this file? I've tried searching for an application, with no result... Also, I haven't found any questions related to this issue with the 13.04 Unity version... I've tried this solution, with no result. Please note that this isn't a Xampp question, the same happened to me when I tried to install Skype. UPDATE: I've tried this solution: cd ~/Downloads chmod +x myfile.run sudo sh myfile.run And I've got this error: Syntax error: "(" unexpected What should I do? Thanks!

• Oh Unity Launcher scrambled with color dots after log on or restart

  The left hand side Unity launch bar is color scrambled after reboot, or log on. When touching it with the mouse arrow, it comes back to normal. I installed gnome shell color before this started happening. I will uninstall gnome shell color & see if this problem goes away. Any one ever see this happen. I run a Nvidia 550ti ge-force graphic card. I have the latest 295.33 driver from Nvidia installed and it does show activated in my restricted driver window. Oh yeah, before you inform me, I can tell you that yes, I do see the instructions to report bugs to the correct source. But I really don't know if this is a bug or not. Could be something else.
