  • MediaWiki alternatives for small business?

    Are there any good alternative wiki's to MediaWiki out there for a small business? Mostly we are just wanting to use it for documentation. MediaWiki is a fine (and slightly outdated) piece of software, but it doesn't even officially support basic things like controlling who has access to what page/article, which is an important feature for us.

  • Crop display size in linux

    My laptop has a slightly damaged lcd - it has a black strip on the right that reduces the working resolution from 1400x1050 to about 1375x1050 - thus hiding part of the right edge of the desktop, windows, or the mouse pointer should it be unwise enough to stray there. Is there a way in linux to crop the monitor output so as to keep the screen inside the working area of the monitor? edit: this is the same question as Limit video output to a section of a display and leave the rest blank

  • Radeon HD4850 serious issues when using DirectX 10

    Hello, I have a problem with my video card. Whenever I run a DirectX 10 game, it works for a few seconds (10 or so) and then starts displaying nothing but big polygons. I have tested this with Crysis and Resident Evil 5, both have the same problems. The same games running under DirectX 9 work fine, except for some small black squares once in a while. I have the following specs: Asus P7P55D LE Intel Core i5 750 Sapphire Radeon HD4850 1GB 2x2GB Patriot Viper II Sector 5, DDR3 1600 MHz OCZ Stealth X Stream 500SXS 500W At first I thought it could be the video card overheating (it has stock cooling), but the game crashes even when it's running at 50 degrees C, and it's never been higher than 70. I also thought it could be the PSU, but as far as I know 500W is enough for this computer, especially because I haven't overclocked anything. My OS is Windows 7 X64 and I am using Catalyst 10.10, but I have also tried many older versions with no success. I don't think there is a problem with the card itself, or else it wouldn't run DirectX 9 games I believe. I have spent many hours searching for a solution but I couldn't, so any help is appreciated. Thank you. EDIT: I did some further investigation about the problem, and it seems taspeotis was right, it might be related to memory. I slightly underclocked the memory from 993 to 965 MHz and the problem went away completely. Both the black squares using DirectX 9 and the weird polygons using DirectX 10. I was using RE DirectX 10 Benchmark, as it consistently crashed around the same point, and now I can play the full benchmark with no artifacts at all. Unfortunately, the underclock has an obvious hit in performance. Although it's not critical, it's definitely noticeable. So, if the video memory test software showed no erros, but the card needs an underclock to work, what might be the problem? Temperature? Voltage? By the way, I couldn't find what the default voltage for this card is. And what is a good software to try and increase it? I tried Ati Tray Tools but it has a bug that increases the clock speed dramatically whenever I change something in the Overclock tab, so I'm afraid it might fry my card. Worst case scenario, if I don't find I solution I will try to slightly increase the GPU clock to compensate for the memory clock. Thank you again.

  • What do I need to write Japanese (kanji) on my Mac?

    I have a Macbook, but it's slightly too old to use Mac OS X 10.6's trackpad Chinese input. I have a Wacom tablet, but even though Mac OS X has had tablet character recognition since 10.2 and now knows Chinese characters, they're separate enough that it apparently can't put these two together and read Chinese characters I write on my Wacom. But I'm sure somebody has a way to let me do this. What software do I need to let me write Japanese kanji on my Wacom tablet under Mac OS X?

  • cannot move to a subdirectory of itself

    I have 2 folders: /home/sphinx/articlesdb/ and: /home/sphinx/tmp/articlesdb/ I want to move and overwrite all of the files from tmp into the main folder. I am currently using: mv -f /home/sphinx/tmp/articlesdb/ /home/sphinx/ But I get this error: mv: cannot move `/home/sphinx/tmp/articlesdb/' to a subdirectory of itself, `/home/sphinx/articlesdb' It needs to do this as fast as possible so I don't want to copy. Should I remove /home/sphinx/articlesdb/ completely and then run the mv command or do I just need to tweak the command slightly?

    Wait, I know! I know that this "syntax highlight in textarea"-question was raised like a million times on stackoverflow! But, please, listen. offtopic: I'm not a web-developer, and technically I'm not a programmer at all. I study mechatronics and deal mostly with control-engineering and digital-hardware. And I'm so pissed off that whenever I want to share some application (that would be helpful in my field) and embed it into the web, I need to know such a crazy amount of technologies, like html, css, javascript, flash, etc.. that takes time, which I could have been spending for the benefit of my own field. Right now I'm playing with hardware-description-languages and I'm writing some Python-libraries to convert one HDL into another. And I wanted to embed such feature on the web: http://xhdl2vhdl.appspot.com/ I wanted to implement some basic syntax highlighting (only keywords highlighting will be enough) so that the code could be readable. But the whole idea highlighting something in textarea is not trivial at all. The other difficulty is that the languages I work with are rare, and there are no out-of-box solutions for them.     Since the price of many dedicated hardware Digital Media Extenders is only slightly lower than that of a cheap laptop, is there any reason you couldn't use a laptop as a Digital Media Extender? I'm looking for specific reasons that might make this unworkable. For instance, would the small screen/low-power video card of the laptop prevent the movie from playing well on the TV?

  • Treating differential operator as algebraic entity

    I know that this question is offtopic and don't belong here. But i didn't know somewhere else to ask. So here is the question. I was reading e:the story of a number by Eli Maor, where he treats differential operator as just like any algebraic entity. For example if we have a differential equation like y’’ + 5y’ - 6y = 0. This can be treaed as (D^2 + 5D – 6)y = 0. So, either y = 0 (trivial solution) or (D^2 + 5D – 6) = 0. Factoring out above equation we get (D-1)(D+6)= 0 with solutions as D = 1 and D = -6. Since D does not have any meaning on its own, multiplying by y on both the sides we get Dy = y and Dy = -6y for which the solutions are Ae^x and Be^-6x. Combining these 2 solutions we get Ae^x + Be^-6x. Now my doubt is this approach break when we have an equation like D^2y = 0. Which means y = 0 (again trivial) or D^2 = 0 which means D = 0. Now Dy = y*0 = 0. That means y = C ( a constant). The actual answer should be Cx. I know that it is stupidity to treat D^2 = 0 as D = 0, it led me to doubt the entire process of treating differential equation as algebraic equation. Can someone throw light on this? Or any other site where i might get answer?

  • Different Results of Scanning Wireless Networks

    Hi, I found that under Ubuntu, WICD and command "/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan" give a little different list of wireless networks. Windows 7 also gives a slightly different list. For example, there is one shown in WICD but not in the command nor in Windows 7. I wonder why? How to get a complete list of wireless networks? Thanks and regards!

  • FreeBSD with 64 CPUs

    I have a quad socket octo-core system running FreeBSD. Currently, I need to turn off HyperThreading to get it to boot, as FreeBSD only supports 32 CPUs. There were some patches made awhile ago against a trunk version of 8.1, but even after modifying them slightly to work and compile with 8.1-RELEASE, the machine wouldn't boot. Has there been any progress here? I can't find much good information about it, Google thinks I'm talking about 64-bit architecture and not literally 64 CPUs.

  • Recommended Practices for Managing httpd.conf for different environments

    We have several different environments (developer dekstop, integration, QA, prod) which should have slightly different variants of the same httpd.conf file. As an example, the httpd.conf file configures that httpd should act as a reverse proxy and proxy certain URLs to Jetty, but the hostname of the Jetty instance is different in each environment. Is there a recommended practice for mangaging these kinds of differences? I looked around the apache documentation for the httpd.conf file and I didn't see anything that does what I need.

  • My monitor made a noise and is now dimmer - can I repair this myself?

    I have a Samsung SyncMaster T190 LCD monitor which I've had for about 5 years. It hissed slightly then went dim (readable but the top half of the screen is less bright). I'm pretty sure that after 5 years of service it's just got to the point where something's burned out, so my question is can I repair this myself, or should I just get a new monitor. I'm currently a student so self repair would be a better option if cost effective.

  • Change ISP and MX static ip but no mail

    We have recently changed our ISP, I have changed the MX record for our domain name to point to the new external static IP address for the router on the new ISP's connexion but I am not getting any mail (though sending works). Do I just have to wait will the change propagates? I am slightly concerned because I can connect to the web email service made visible through the new router, but not actually receive email. Have I missed something?

  • Thin configuration doesn't start on boot, but they do on manual start [migrated]

    I have some thin config files (generated with sudo thin install) which are slightly modified (only paths where they're located). I can start them just fine with /etc/init.d/thin start, but if the server is restarted, they're not auto started. I issued the update-rc.d thin defaults command to make it run on startup, but no luck yet. This server is running Ubuntu 12.04.1 32-bit, Ruby 1.9.3p194, MongoDB 2.2.0.

My laptop (a slightly ageing HP Pavilion with a 1440 x 900 display) would really benefit from a portable monitor to plug into the vga port. I wish to make a PDF, which would be searchable (based on the text from the source, the changes would remain as they are).     I have a bash script that I need to execute. It seems that I can't run in in my terminal because it has a slightly different syntax. I could run the first file like bash ./configure but it produces a makefile that I can not use. If I try bash make it tells me that it can't execute make. How do I run this make file in bash?     Regular expressions as they are today are pretty much as concise and compact as they can be. Consequently, they are often criticised for being unreadable and hard to debug. If you had to reinvent a new syntax for regular expressions, what would it look like? Do you prefer the concise syntax they already have (or a different but similarly concise syntax)? If so, please justify why you think regular expressions deserve to be this concise, but your favourite programming language doesn’t (unless it’s Perl). Or do you think regular expressions should have a slightly more spaced-out syntax and look a bit more like operators and syntax elements normally do in programming languages? If so, provide examples of what you think the syntax should look like, and justify why it is better than the current syntax. Or do you think there shouldn’t even be a special syntax for regular expressions, and instead they should be constructed from syntax elements already present in the programming language? If so, give examples of a syntax that might be used to construct such regular expressions.
