    I run a program called Registry Mechanic, every night. Every single time, it picks up like 8 Microsoft Antimalware entries, which it identifies as the highest kind of security threats. I feel like Registry Mechanic is a good software--it was recommended to me at #computerhelp on irc.undernet.org, a long time ago, by an op that never steered me wrong, otherwise--, so I feel like I should give the issue due attention. The entries are: 4x "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft Antimalware" and 4x "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft Antimalware\setup\RememberedProperties"

  • Problem with kde-filesystem when updating.

    Since 2-3 weeks, each time I update my fedora 11 box with yum, I get these messages. Error unpacking rpm package kde-filesystem-4-33.fc11.noarch warning: /etc/rpm/macros.kde4 saved as /etc/rpm/macros.kde4.rpmsave error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/doc/HTML/fr/docs/common: cpio: rename Failed: kde-filesystem.noarch 0:4-33.fc11 Everything else works fine. I tried to reinstall it. The re-installation was fine but I still get the messages when I yum update I didn't try to remove it with yum because it will remove more than 100 packages dues to dependencies. What else could I do ?

  • How to install/upgrade to Windows 8.1 RTM without a Microsoft account

    When I installed Windows 8, I deliberately chose not to use a Microsoft account to sign in. I like to keep things separate, and just logon with a tradional local account. Any apps that require me to sign-in with my Live account, will have to prompt me to sign-in. Now, I just updated to 8.1, but towards the end of the setup process, I was asked to sign-in with a Microsoft account or create one. Unlike when installation Windows 8, there didn't seem to be any option to skip that step, or otherwise close the sign-in prompt and continue to my updated Windows installation. At least not that I could find. This is particular annyoing, when setting up computers for friends and family, whom I support. They may not have, or have any interest in getting, a Microsoft account and I'm reluctant to use my own. I realize I can disconnect my Microsoft account after the fact, but is there really no way to install, or upgrade to, Windows 8.1, without being forced to create a Microsoft account? If there is, how does one go a about that?

    I just updated to Mac App Store 1.0.2 with the update to 10.6.8. The Mac App Store said I have one update available, for Angry Birds.... I do not have Angry Birds on my system, but when I clicked the update button I got the following message. "You have updates available for other accounts. Sign in to [email protected] to update applications for that account." Needless to say this account does not exist. Any ideas what this is all about?

  • After update, suddenly lost ability to access Windows Server 2008 R2 shares from Windows XP clients

    Today I lost the ability to see my Windows Server 2008 R2 shares from any of my 3 Windows XP machines in my small office. The 5 Win7 machines haven't been affected (they are still able to browse/access the 2008 server), but none of my WinXP machines can access the 2008R2 server anymore. Yesterday (and for the previous year) everything was working fine. I do not have a domain setup. I can still access Win7 shares from WinXP clients. Browsing the server logs, I see that the following update was installed last night: > Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for > installation.   • Windows 7 playback of dvr-Microsoft files stutters

    I've just had to install Windows 7 on my Media Center machine because my Vista installation had a faulty drive. I've got the latest drivers that I can find - Intel 945GM integrated Graphics, Realtek audio drivers. Things are working OK with one exception. Playback of old recordings, from dvr-Microsoft format files, is choppy. The picture freezes for a fraction of a second, then quickly catches up. The sound is uninterrupted and doesn't pause. These freezes happen once every 5 seconds or so. It's very regular. Playback of Live TV from the digital tuner is perfectly smooth. DVD playback is perfectly smooth. As an experiment, I used the MPEG editing package VideoReDo to create a small test file in three different formats. This program takes the raw MPEG streams and repackages them into the desired container. I took the same clip and created three files in three formats: dvr-Microsoft (Microsoft's old recorded TV format); mpg (standard MPEG); and ts (raw MPEG transport stream of the kind often produced by PVRs). When these three files are played back under Windows 7, the mpg and ts files play smoothly, but the dvr-Microsoft file stutters. The last piece of data I have is that two other Windows 7 machines can play back dvr-Microsoft files smoothly with no stuttering. One is a netbook, with less grunt than the media centre. So there must be something specific about my Media Center machine that's causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea where I can look now? I don't know much about AV software, codecs, filter graphs etc. but I suspect that's where the problem lies. Rendering the video isn't the problem, but extracting the streams is. How would I go about diagnosing the problem? Edited to add: I just used the GraphStudio tool to look at the filter graph on the offending PC. The filter graph it uses by default for dvr-Microsoft looks identical to the other machines, and, interestingly, when I play the files using GraphStudio they run smoothly. Under Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center they stutter. I'd like to see the filter graph for Windows Media Player but GraphStudio won't show it. It looks like Windows Media Player and WMC are using a different decoding path to GraphStudio. Edited again to add: Today I purchased a new HDTV. The same Media Center driving the TV at 1080p is now playing back the old Recorded TV files smoothly, without stuttering. So whatever the cause of the original problem, using a different resolution seems to have removed the problem. It might also explain why nobody else has had this problem. I doubt many people use Media Centre with a 14in portable TV.

    Hi all, Adobe Flash Player is set to automatically check for updates on Windows startup. I've always wondered where exactly it is set to do this. Checking the running services, as well as msconfig does not yield its location. The message in question looks like this: http://www.technipages.com/disable-an-update-to-your-adobe-flash-player-is-available-message-forever.html I know how to disable it via Adobe's web site (instructions are included in link above), but I'm interested in knowing where exactly in Windows is this set to perform this action? I have done some research on this, and people keep saying to check the following registry locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run However, I have checked those locations, and I still cannot locate where this updater is stored. I'm pretty sure that malware also uses this technique to automatically load upon startup, and since it's not in the typical location(s) that a user would look, it's well hidden.     I have my Windows 7 Pro set up to "download patches, but let me choose when to install them". However, on several occasions, when I have shut down the O/S, Windows Update has proceeded with a lengthy patch application even though I issued no permission to do so. This is a bit scary to me... in particular, it seems I cannot trust the Windows Update settings. Is this official policy somewhere at Microsoft, or am I witnessing a bug? What can be done about it?

    Sometimes I see an "Error on page" icon in the lower left part of Internet Explorer (e.g. version 7.0). When I click on this icon a popup-box show some error information (I do not know if the error always is an javascript error or what to be called). The popup-box can not be resized and the text cannot be copied (e.g. for use in a error report). Does anyone knows how to retrieve the information so in can be copied and used elsewhere? Maybe someone has developed a tool to do that.

  • How can I quickly access the Microsoft Word zoom setting?

    I get a lot of Word documents to work on, and the first thing I always do is access the zoom setting (View- Zoom) and change the zoom to "Page Width". There's no keyboard shortcut for the zoom settings, and I do it enough times that I'd like a quicker way. In Pages, there's a little pop-up that lets you choose the zoom you want. Is there a way to quickly change the zoom settings in Word? Thanks.

    I have a subdomain that I want to update with ddclient. I configured the ddclient to get the IP from dyndns but it's not updating the subdomain on namecheap. They said to use yourdomain.com as the login instead of my actual domain. Has anyone been able to get namecheap DNS updated with ddclient? I'm running CentOS 6.2 with ddclient 3.7.3. When I run ddclient I get the following.   • exchange 2003 to 2007, recipient update services

    going to try my best to explain: our exchange 2003 was migrated to exchange 2007 (was not here for the migration). Looking in active directory sites and services - services - Microsoft exchange - company - address list container - recipient update services i have two recipient update services 1) recipient update service (enterprise configuration) 2) recipient update service (my-domain) my guess is one of these is left from the old exchange 2003. (im guessing this because the migration was not done properly, the exchange server was never actually uninstall, it was just taken offline, and then later disposed of). could having two of these cause me issues, and if so, how do i know which one i could get rid of ? Im asking because i honestly have no idea. it might even be nothing. thanks

    Hello everybody. I have a CentOS server on a production environment. I need to update the PHP package that I installed using the REMI repository. Quite easy: yum update php But what is it going to happen if something goes wrong during the update? How can I rollback? What's the best technique to make sure not to compromise a production server due to an update? Is it maybe better to compile PHP from the source, rather than using a binary package? EDIT: I am not afraid of incompatibility between my code and the new PHP version (I have well tested that on development). I suppose the files related to the software update are compressed packages that have to be saved, opened and decompressed. Error Message #1: Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003 With CD icon "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003' disk and click OK. Use source: Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003" 1st got this message after CD was inserted to recover partial file STDP11N. Recovered STDP11N, however, still receiving pop up window with error message each time outlook opens. Had accidentally cleaned up old programs and suddenly this was missing. Reinstalled Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003 using install CD. Outlook worked buit keep getting error message pop up each time I open Outlook. Hit ok. Error Message #2: The path 'Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'STDP11N.MSI' in a folder from which you can install the product Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003." Hit ok. Back to error message #1 Hit close window Error message #3: Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive.
