  I understand that constant CStrings are allocated statically, rather than on the heap. I also noticed that constant NSStrings have an infinite retain count. Does it hold true that constant NSStrings are also allocated statically, rather than on the heap?

  Hello, I downloaded all jar files for Spring Security 3.0 and added them to my lib folder in Netbeans 6.8. Then i added Spring framework to my web application and tried to modify applicationContext.xml as given in the pdf that shipped with Spring Security. • Undefined symbols after installing new xcode 3.2.3 build

  I want to move to the new XCode 3.2.3 GM Seed build for development, but when I bring up my project I get 'base sdk missing' because my project is set to use iPhone SDK 3.0. If I change 'base SDK' to iPhone 3.2 or 4.0 and then compile I get a lot of errors that I don't understand. I dumped a few of them below. Can anyone tell me what I am missing? Also, can someone confirm that if I choose 'base sdk' of iPhone 3.2 or 4.0 that I can still choose 'target device' of iPhone 3.0 and not force my customers to install the new SDK. I really don't want to be the app that forces my customers to upgrade their OS. Thanks!   For example, there is a common snippet in JS to get a default value: function f(x) { x = x || 10; } This kind of snippet is not easily understood by all the members of my team, their JS level being low. Should I not use this trick then? It makes the code less readable by peers, but more readable than the following according to any JS dev: function f(x) { if (!x) { x = 10; } } Sure, if I use this trick and a colleague sees it, then they can learn something. But the case is often that they see this as "trying to be clever". So, should I lower the level of my code if my teammates have a lower level than me?

• Can't log in to GNOME after upgrade (raring -> saucy)

  I've just upgraded my ubuntu (raring to saucy) and I now can't log in to GNOME. As opposed to virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example). I set it up to log in automatically. But it asks for password now. I type in the password, press Enter, the screen blinks and here I am again at the login screen. The act of taking screenshots and creating documentation seems to be a painful and time consuming experience. In one company I worked for, we had a technical documentation team with two technical authors and they developed all the user guides for our customers. In other companies where I've suggested hiring a technical author, I've been told they are not worth the money, but I'm a little unsure if that rings true. Is it better to have developers stop coding and take half a day to do screenshots and create the various guides or is it worth hiring someone who handles such tasks?

  There seems to be plenty of good, free UML tools. I hear about UML tools being used by large organizations, and they seem to have plenty of advocates. However, in my career I have never seen them used beyond "dabbling". Now, I have seen many UML diagrams drawn on whiteboards, and I use them myself all the time, on paper, to think about problems. I've also seen articles such as this one claiming why developers don't use UML, but the arguments just don't land with me. Frankly, this seems like an opportunity for a start-up if one can figure out why developers really don't use them, and solve those problems.   When deciding upon how to design a software project with my colleagues, most suggestions tend to be for using specific frameworks "because it's popular in the job market" or "that's the framework that gets recruiters on the phone," and never what I'm looking for which is, "because it's a good fit for the project as it makes the system more adaptive to future changes and makes life easier for developers." I didn't start looking at projects in this way until I started reading up on domain-driven design. I've found that the actual domain is hidden deep under the frameworks used and it's hard to learn the business processes that have been implemented by the software product. Is there a way to marry the two competing goals: getting exposure as a development team while still being able to avoid complexity? Are frameworks that compromise, or are there other solutions out there?

To keep things running as seamlessly and smoothly as possible, constantly evaluate priorities, mitigate risk, and be ready for whatever might happen -- because things do happen when there are 50,000 plus attendees, tens of thousands of devices, unexpected requirements, and a constant flow of up-to-the-minute information. Here's just some of what it takes to keep the conference going, network style: 100 Oracle network, voice, and desktop engineers; security, risk management, and other IT experts, who come in from 17 countries  1000+ network switches 300+ miles of copper and fiber 485 wireless access points 2,500 wired laptops 300 VoIP phones And just where are all these networks and devices deployed?   At my work we use AspectJ in some of our Java projects. To get this to work with ant builds we have been placing aspectjtools.jar within ant/lib/. I am now working on a particular Java project and need to use a newer version of aspectJ. I don't want to have to get everyone who uses the project to update their local copy of aspectjtools.jar. Instead, I tried adding the newer aspectjtools.jar to the lib directory of the project and adding the following line to build.xml. <taskdef resource="org/aspectj/tools/ant/taskdefs/aspectjTaskdefs.properties" classpath="./lib/aspectjtools.jar" /> However, this doesn't work as I hoped as the ANT classloader loads jars from ant/lib/ in preference to the jar I specify in the taskdef classpath. Is there any way to force ant to pick the jar checked into my project instead?

  We decided to switch from VS integrated setup to WiX. However, what we currently do is use projects output files as the input for the setup project. This lets us easily add Application Files to a directory (for images, samples, and other resources...) and those files are automatically added to the setup when we build. I could not find any similar feature in WiX. WiX seems to require one Directory entry and one File entry for each and every directory and file. This would require us to change the WiX source everytime a file is added which, to my eyes, is prohibitive since we have so many of them. Is there any integrated way of doing that with WiX or do I have to write my own task that will create a WiX source before calling candle?

• Preventing referenced assembly PDB and XML files copied to output

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 C#/.NET 3.5 project with a post build task to ZIP the contents. However I'm finding that I'm also getting the referenced assemblies' .pdb (debug) and .xml (documentation) files in my output directory (and ZIP). For example, if MyProject.csproj references YourAssembly.dll and there are YourAssembly.xml and YourAssembly.pdb files in the same directory as the DLL they will show up in my output directory (and ZIP). I can exclude *.pdb when ZIP'ing but I cannot blanket exclude the *.xml files as I have deployment files with the same extension. Is there a way to prevent the project from copying referenced assembly PDB and XML files?
