  Hi, I really like Itunes as a music player but i can't get it to work in ubuntu so I need another one! functions i want: shuffle, low cpu usage, a friendly interface and free of bugs. (friendly interface = esay to use) why not use rythmbox, well it has bugs, the shuffle button doesn't work because it shuffles the next song after each song. So when i use it it's just a big loop over three different songs! i want the itunes look, like it shuffles once and lets you see in what order the songs will be played. //Alvar

• Windows 7 + Bind on Ubuntu - DNS keeps stopping

  I have a Bind DNS server running from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server 64 bit. In there, I've setup some local A records for internal websites, e.g. wiki.domain.local. Everything works fine, except that every so often (a few times a day), the DNS stops responding on client machines (running Windows 7). The only way I've found to fix it is to stop/start the dnscache service on the Windows machine. Sometimes if I just wait for a few minutes, the DNS will start to work again. I've checked the Windows event log and can't see anything relevant. I've also had a look in the Bind logs and can't see anything there. Has anyone experienced this before?

• Reference manager for Ubuntu

  I'm in dire need of a reference/citation manager in Ubuntu. The features I need the most are: 1) Metadata extraction/editing of pdf 2) Fetch metadata from online databases such as Google Scholar 3) Attach pdf or other file to reference 4) Tag references and recall those with a given tag or set of tags 5) Provide APA style citation for references (in integration with OOffice and/or Latex) Optional: Would be great if it can annotate/highlight pdfs. Mendeley probably does all of these, but it's behavior has driven me insane, especially when the number of references it's trying to handle is large. It constantly tries to sync with the web and creates duplicate references. I've tried JabRef, and while it looks like a decent piece of freeware, it doesn't do some of the above. I found others like Bibus, Referencer, etc. to be lacking or buggy or inactive development. Is there another option, or should I give up the search.

• Cannot connect to HTTPS port on Ubuntu

  I've installed a new SSL certificate and set up Nginx to use it. But requests time out when trying to hit HTTPS on the site. When I telnet to my domain on port 80 it connects, but times out on port 443. I'm not sure if there's some defaults on Ubuntu preventing a connection.   Here is my IPCONFIG /ALL from the host (Windows 7 64-bit): Here is my IFCONFIG from the guest (Ubuntu 10.04): To be honest, I don't have experience configuring a network between a host and a guest in VMWare (a virtual machine). I've searched high and low on the internet, but I haven't seen anything that can help. Perhaps I'm just not using the right keywords when I search. Nevertheless, does anyone here have any experience with establishing a network connection? Edit: One important note. I don't use DHCP to provide private addresses to the hosts on my LAN. I use "static" IP addresses on my internal network by configuring each IP address manually in the host's network configuration utility (I have TV's, XBOX 360, and a few PC's). I would like to configure the IP on the virtual machine guest manually as well. The reason is because my XBOX 360 only works properly using a static IP address. It will kick me off XBOX Live if it has one given by the router (via DHCP).

• Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). Thanks for any advice.

Ubuntu box has two interfaces, One is connected to WAN (Public IP) and another one is connected to MUX (Private IP). • Just installed Ubuntu 10.10, can't connect via SSH

  I've just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a VM on virtualbox (4.0.4). Everything on the VM is set to the defaults: NAT adapter. When installing the OS, I selected OpenSSH, and nothing else. I've tried to connect to the server via ssh from the host (running Mac OS X), but it only timeouts. Can't scp my credentials to it or ping the server either. As far as I can tell, the server is connected fine, has a valid IP, and can ping google.com. I know I'm missing something basic here... I don't believe I have any kind of firewall up, unless there's one I don't know about that comes with the install. iptables has the default configuration.

  I recently installed the Ubuntu 12.10 server version from a USB stick. The step "Install additional software" or whatever keeps failing, so i though screw it and continued. Everything else worked like a charm. I thought. Turns out, the only two entries in my sources.list are the install CD. This means that i have no way of getting a.. well.. anything installed. Can someone give me a short list of repositories that i need so i can put them in the file? And on a similar note: What is the comment character for the sources list? #?

• Sound plays on headphones and speakers with Lenovo ThinkPad L512 + Ubuntu 10

  The only thing really missing from this install is this issue with the sound. I've searched all over the forums and i found one thing where you get the model and codecs and write them to a file, however, I can't seem to find what my "model" is because none of the postings have anything about Lenovo laptops. Here is the command they all asked for: Code: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec Codec: Realtek ALC269 Codec: Intel G45 DEVIBX With that info, how do I get the model, and how do I get my speakers to stop playing when headphones are plugged in. Also, I don't have any software installed like pulse audio either, so it's not that. Thanks so much to whoever can answer this... The Ubuntu forums are nearly useless... ive never gotten a correct answer back on that site.

My question is what are the other folders and what is the physical location of these folders if complete memory is taken by the device dev/sda?

• Can't unlock locked screen, in Ubuntu 12

  After locking the screen (with a keystroke bound to xlock -nice 8 -mode blank), I can unlock the screen as expected, but only within a few minutes. After being locked overnight, when I hit a key (even Ctrl+Alt combos), the screen stays black with just a brief white flash across the middle of both monitors. The workaround is to ssh in from another host and restart X. Some months ago, this happened every few weeks. By now it happens almost every morning. How do I even start to diagnose this? What might I look for in log files? (The intermittency is particularly troubling.) Failing that, is there an alternative to xlock aka xlockmore? Hardware: 3-year-old HP minitower, GEForce 9800 GT, two Asus LCD monitors. Software: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS. Window manager awesome-wm. NVidia driver 304.88. XLock version xlockmore-5.31.

  i have a ubuntu server which i want to use as a transparent proxy, (i have no issue setting up squid, just the iptables. The server only has one network interface. The server sits on the same subnet as the router which is the current gateway to the internet for clients, i want to simply set the gateway on the clients pointing at the transparent proxy which in turn forwards the requests to the router and off to the internet.   I'm faced with a pending clean install due to a dying hard drive in my old Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I've been running Ubuntu 8.04 on it since... 8.04 and I've been more or less happy with it except that it's a PITA to recompile the kernel or do any other kernel related work. I mostly do software dev on it, gcc, gvim, c/c++/perl/php/mysql and running vmware server 2.0. I've heard mixed reviews of 10.04, and am wondering what to put on the new HD. I'm even considering just sticking with 8.04 as it seems to mostly meet my needs. Any suggestions?

When I try to login from my laptop (SSH user@my-ip) ,SSH asks for my password, and when i give it, it does nothing! Also when I give the wrong password, it tells me that the password is incorrect.   I've tried set root=(hd0,2) chainloader +1 boot set root=(hd0,2) linux /boot/vmlinuz... and the loopback (loop0) /ubuntu/disks/root.disk command etc. When I try the boot command it tells me there's no kernel and when I boot Win7 (it's a dual boot) the root.disk says 0kb. nothing boots from the live usb I've made and I've tried to use programs to mount the partitions to no effect - they only show me what's on my windows file drives. I've got some really important docs on the linux harddrive I need to get to. any ideas?

• Rebuilding RAID1 in Ubuntu

  I had my second HD in my RAID1 come up with bad sectors. So I got another drive and pulled out the bad sector drive and put the new drive in. With the original working RAID1 drive in the computer it failed to boot. I manually copied everything from the old drive over via a Gparted Live CD. Still no booting. Kind of scratching my head here as I can see that both of the drives have data on them but are unable to get either of them to boot. I used a Ubuntu live CD and couldn't even manually mount either of the drives, which I thought was really the odd part. Not sure where to go from here.

• Stop Ubuntu From Automatically Updating the Time

  I just need to set the date temporarily. I run this date 051918002010.00 and it sticks for just 5 seconds or so. Then it syncs with the time server. I have tried: ps aux | grep ntp but there is nothing there. I need a correct answer now, more than a more detailed answer later :) Edit: As answerers quickly discovered, my Ubuntu is running in a VirtualBox, which turned out to be relevant for some versions of the answer.   I am trying to install MySql on Ubuntu 12.04 but the installation is failing with the error: "Can't change to run as user 'mysql'. Check if the user 'mysql' exits." So I go ahead type in the command : 'cat /etc/passwd | grep mysql' and result is null. I try to add a user 'mysql' by issuing the command 'useradd mysql'/. But it fails with the message: 'useradd: user 'mysql' already exists'. When I try to delete the user 'mysql' using the command 'userdel mysql' it also fails with the message "userdel: cannot remove entry 'mysql' from /etc/passwd." Can anyone explain me what's going on and suggest a solution.
