• Ubuntu won't install from Live CD

  Complete noob here. I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a Live CD. I told the computer to boot from the CD (it does) & it reads the CD & then quits with the Ubuntu dots just freezing. I checked the disk & did the memory test, both OK. I also did the nomodeset in the start-up line. Hit escape when it froze but there were no msgs. Have also tried Ubuntu 12.10 & Dream Studio, same thing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Erik The Pope

• How do I install an older 2.6.37 Kernel Version?

  I have a Sony VAIO P netbook and for several issues (graphics driver, audio driver and power management), I want to install an older version of the Linux kernel on Ubuntu 11.10 (actually its Xubuntu) that seems to be much more suitable. So I searched for Ubuntu kernels and found this link which includes all versions of the Linux kernel distributed by Ubuntu. I am looking for a version before 2.6.38 (to escape the known power management issue) and of course solve my many driver problems! I guess my best bet is 2.6.37 but there are several 2.6.37.x-x kernels! Can someone point me to the right choice? In each folder (for example: this one) there are several DEB packages. Which packages should I install? (Note: I have a 32-bit system) What is the installation process? sudo dpkg -i *.deb ? Is this fine or additional steps are required? Thanks.

• How to re-enable function keys in byobu?

  I was using byobu on Ubuntu 11.10 Server and I needed to hit a function key in an app, so I hit F9 to bring up the config menu and switched the keybinding set from "f-keys" to "screen-escape-keys". That worked, but now I can't re-enable all the f-keys. I found a program byobu-config that brings up the menu again, and I can switch back to screen keys from there. This fixes things for new screen processes, but the effect on the current screen session is weird: it disables the ctrl-a (screen) keys and restores F2-F8, but F9-F12 still don't do anything (they're just passed on to the foreground process). What's up with this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  If you get the following error when trying to write an expression there is an easy solution Attempt to parse the expression "@[User::FilePath] + "\" + @[User::FileName] + ".raw"" failed.  The token "." at line number "1", character number "<some position>" was not recognized. The expression cannot be parsed because it contains invalid elements at the location specified. The SSIS expression language is a C based language and the \ is a token, this means you have to escape it with another one. i.e "\" becomes "\\", unlike C# you can't prefix the string with a @, you have to use the escaping route. • Ubuntu 12.04 - Workspace switcher is shown after switching to another workspace

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 on HP Envy 14 and found a rather interesting bug. When I switch between workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, for example moving down to Workspace 3 from Workspace 1, workspace switcher is shown (as seen on below screenshot). It stays there until I hit escape key. After debugging, the problem only happens when I change shortcut keys to Super + direction. With default Ctrl + Alt + direction, everything is OK. I've searched but haven't found this problem reported before, I'm also not sure this is called workspace switcher :) Can you please let me know what to search for, are there any logs which might have some related information?

• Target tracking with a small delay (actionscript 3.0)

  I'm having trouble thinking of a good method to track my character with an enemy attack. Of course, I don't want the attack to track my character's current position; I want it to track where the character was about 1 second before (so you can move around and make the attack miss and loop around you sort of a thing). The general structure of my game uses a timer to update all of my events. I have a timer going off every 25 milliseconds that updates everything, including my player's position and the enemies position. Right now I just have the enemy attack directly targeting my character....which works fine except that it's impossible to escape =p. Let me know if I didn't supply enough details. My approach was going to basically be get my character's position from about 1 second ago, then have the enemy target that position, the only problem is I can't think of a good way to get my character's position from previous times. I've learned that EOF is -1. i type -1 but it just reprints it. It's a never ending loop. Over time did the library get changed and differs from what the book intended it to be? when i say library i mean the putchar()/getchar() that's in the library... sorry.

  I'm writing my first 2D game, and I'm writing some tracking logic for the computer enemies. Basic follow-the-player tracking was easy, but ineffectual. Too easy to escape. So I'm trying to implement some more sophisticated flanking and other tactics, and (as expected) it's pretty tricky. This is a topic I know nothing about. I'm going to keep trying, but it'd be awesome to have some examples or tips to work off of. Is there any place that has a decent set of pseudocode AI algorithms, or tips or advice on the subject, e.g. for 2D tracking?

• Alt + # shorcut, how to remove?

  Being a World of Warcraft player, I use keyboard combinations to cast spells and "alt + #" is one of the combination, # being the key just before the 1 2 3 4 [...], under "escape" and on top of "tab" (I have a "French(canada)" keyboard). I've searched in the keyboard options, the shorcuts parts and I found nothing, I even tried to assign it randomly, hopping it'll overwrite the real shorcut but it didn't. When I press "alt + #" I have a "alt + tab" like but just for one type of window. For exemple it'll make me navigate through many instances of folder, but it won't switch to another application. It just cycle through the open windows of one application. Help me get rid of this annoying shorcut please ! Thanks in advance.

• Youtube controls (sound, etc) not functional in full-screen mode: is that normal?

  When playing youtube videos full-screen, I can't mouse-interact with the player controls, except for the slider (only single-clicking on the video works as play/pause, but not double-click, interestingly, so the only way to leave full-screen mode is via Escape). Is this behavior known? What can I do about it? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, using Google's Chrome browser. P.S. If that matters, some other flash players I've tried also display the same problem, so this may be an issue with Google-supplied Flash plugin. Thanks in advance.

  Possible Duplicate: How do I report a bug? discovered 2 bugs:: 1)cannot restart the computer when you click the top right icon power key "restart", it will stay on the splash image "ubuntu...",i wait for about 7 minutes and more, it also cannot restart, so, i have to uninstall the battery of the laptop...... 2)when i first update to the 12.10,not run for few hours, the "input method icon" on the top state bar is suddenly hide, when i use the shortcuts to switch the input method with "ctrl +space" it doesn' work at all, i restart the laptop, it can change the input method, but the state icon "a small keyboard icon is escape, i goto the "i bus" settings, but when i how to adjust it, the icon still can't display on the top bar (now i reinstall it use the iso file, this bug is fixed, but it cannot restart like the former one) it must has some problems of the "i bus" input method

• Problem with Nvidia after update

  After adding the most recent set of updates, I can't get into Ubuntu at all. I get a screen saying that I am running in low-graphics mode, 'your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly etc'. I can hit return and then get to the next screen saying 'what would you like to do?' however, i can't choose from the 4 options, the only keystroke that will register is escape, which takes me to a black screen with a login. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7050/nForce 610i and it has caused problems in the past, but I have always got round it by choosing to boot in recovery mode. Now, no matter which version I try to boot into I can't get into Ubuntu at all.

• Why does my PowerShell script hang when called in PSEXEC via a batch (.cmd) file?

  I'm trying to remotely execute a PowerShell script using PSEXEC. The PowerShell script is called via a .cmd batch file. The reason we do this is to change the execution policy, run the powershell script then reset the execution policy again: On the remote server do-tasks.cmd looks like: powershell -command "&{ set-executionpolicy unrestricted}" powershell DoTasks.ps1 powershell -command "&{ set-executionpolicy restricted}" The PowerShell script DoTasks.ps1 just does this for now: Write-Output "Hello World!" Both of these scripts live in c:\windows\system32 (for now) just so they're on the PATH. On the originating server I do this: psexec \\web1928 -u administrator -p "adminpassword" do-tasks.cmd When this runs I get the following response at the command line: c:\Windows\system32>powershell -command "&{ set-executionpolicy unrestricted}" and the script runs no further. I can't ctrl-c to break the script and I just see ^C characters, I can type input from the keyboard and the characters are echoed to console. On the remote server I see that PowerShell.exe and CMD.exe are running in Task Manager's Process tab. If I end these processes then control returns to the command line on the originating server. I have tried this with just a simple .cmd batch file with a @echo hello world and it works just fine. Running do-tasks.cmd on the remote server via an RDP session works ok as well. Why is my remote batch file getting stuck when executing via PSEXEC?

• How to change mod_rewrite to avoid {REQUEST_FILENAME} in order to get around 255 character URL limit?

  According to this answer: max length of url 257 characters for mod_rewrite? there is a maximum 255 character hard limit based on the file system for using mod_rewrite. According to the accepted answer, there are two solutions: Change the URL format of your application to a max of 255 characters between each slash. Move the Rewrite rules into the apache virtual host config and remove the REQUEST_FILENAME. I cannot use the first method, so I am trying to figure out the second. I have put the Rewrite rules into the Apache virtual host config as requested. However I cannot figure out how to remove the REQUEST_FILENAME and still have my web application framework (Dragonfly) still work. Here is the portion of the rewrite rules that I moved from .htaccess into the virtual host config file of Apache: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f [OR] # if don't want Dragonfly to process html files comment # out the line below (you may need to remove the [OR] above too). RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} \.(html|nl)$ # Main URL rewriting. RewriteRule (.*) index.cgi?$1 [L,QSA] I've tried removing {REQUEST_FILENAME} and it just breaks the framework in various ways. How do I rewrite this without using {REQUEST_FILENAME}?
