• OSX Finder - Creating New Folder with Right-Click in List View

  I am aware that when using finder in List view, I can create a new folder by right-clicking on an empty row, and pressing 'New Folder'. However, when I happen to be browsing a folder with quite a lot of files (or just enough to invoke a scrollbar), there are no blank rows, and hence nowhere that I can right-click to create a new folder. This is not a big problem, I am just a whinger who likes consistency and find this frustrating. Yes, I am aware that I can press 'Shift + Cmd + N', or can simply change the Finder view. BUT, is there a way to do this within list view? Am I missing something obvious?

• How to track url redirects in browser?

  I have typed http://example.com/load/ in my browser window and pressed "ENTER" key. Now on press of enter this website redirects me to http://example.com/load/1/ and then http://example.com/load/2/ and then I finally landed on this url http://example.com/load/3/. These redirection happens at website end, I am not aware where I am going. But I finally landed on this url: http://example.com/load/3/ I want to track where all my browser gone all urls, I am not seeing it in my history as its redirect at website end. Is there any firefox addon or some toll which can track this for me? I am not sure where to ask this question, so asking it here, moderators please check!

• Config xampp never to cache pages from localhost

  Hello everyone: I am not a webmaster, and that was exactly the reason why I installed XAMPP 1.7.2 on Windows XP SP2 instead of manually configuring Apache, MySQL and PHP to cooperate each other. Now I am having to problem to disable caching pages from localhost. Some suggested just force the browser not to cache, using Firefox web developer bar or something similar; but I feel it would be better if I could configure the Apache server in XAMPP to never allow pages from localhost to be cached. I guess this is done somewhere in httpd.conf? LoadModule cache_module modules/mod_cache.so Would this module be helpful in this case? Doc here : mod_cache I am not very sure this would resolve the problem. Could anyone confirm this approach feasible? I'd like to work it out myself, given the fact that I am on the right track... • Search for files after a relative date using Windows search

  I am looking for a way to save a search that includes a relative date. Specifically I am looking for a way to save a search that matches files that have a modification date that is 7 days ago. I have read the Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax document and I am not seeing a way to say 7 days ago. The numbers and ranges section does mention that relative dates are possible. The problem is that the relative dates described there do not fit the criteria I need. The lastweek almost looks like what I want except if I run a query like after:lastweek on a Monday it will only show my file that have been modified since Sunday at 12:00. The lastweek/lastmonth seem to relative to the start of the week/month which is not what I need. Multi-word relative dates: week, next month, last week, past month, or coming year. The values can also be entered contracted, as follows: thisweek, nextmonth, lastweek, pastmonth, comingyear. One nice thing about saved searches is that they are stored as an XML document and the file format is documented. I am not seeing how to form a correct value for a datetime. If I was able to understand this format, I suspect I could use a text editor and created a saved search that does what I want. • Fixing Corrupted Text

  I Have text which looks like this: supposed to undergo yearly cardiac exam in order to stay on transplant list. But, there are patients who are missing important cardiac information. It is yo ur job as an intern on call to make sure that you fin As you can see, the first line is fine, but then the second line is corrupt.   I am trying to build a Python module (pyfits) but I get the following error: # python setup.py install /home/steve/src/pyfits-2.2.2/stsci_distutils_hack.py:239: DeprecationWarning: os.popen3 is deprecated. Use the subprocess module. (sin, sout, serr) = os.popen3(cmd) running install error: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/lib64/python2.6/config/Makefile (No such file or directory) I get the same error when I try and build other modules so my guess is I am missing a Python development library. I am running Mandriva 2010.0, any suggestions?

• Apache w/out internet connection

  I have a Vista laptop that I have been running Apache / MySql / Php / PhpMyAdmin on for quite some time without fail. I just use it to test bits of code here and there etc. No problems, until recently when I needed to test something and I happened to be in a place that I could not get an internet connection. Why am I unable to access localhost from the same machine without an internet connection? I am type http://localhost..etc into the browser's address bar and I get the message that I am unable to access without an internet connection. I checked my windows/system32/etc/hosts file and the first two lines are 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost What am I missing here?

• Installing OEM Windows Server 2008 under KVM

  Issue I have an HP server that came with an OEM copy of Windows Server 2008. I have installed CentOS 5.4 on the hardware and am trying to install Windows Server 2008 as a KVM guest. When I attempt to install Windows Server 2008 it complains that I am trying to install on unsupported hardware. This issue is caused because the hardware SMBIOS information is not being passed to the KVM guest. Background Before I go any further I want to state that what I am trying to do is within the license. HP offers a supported solution for VMWare but does not have an official solution for KVM. After much research the platform I am going to use is CentOS and KVM so please do not suggest other platforms. I emailed the KVM developers mailing list and was told that this is possible and was given the advice that: "You can dump SLIC table of your host bios and provide it to guest bios using -acpitable parameter." I used dmidecode and got the parameters that need to be passed, but I do not know where to pass the parameters into. Update Looks like CentOS 5.4 uses virt-install instead of qemu. Qemu is in the package manager and I was able to install it after uninstalling qemu-img (they conflict and qemu contains the packages in qemu-img). So now I know how to pass the acpitable parameters, but I am having trouble mapping what came out of dmidecode into -acpitable.

• Ubuntu Newbie Needs Assistance!!

  New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!! • IRC Server For 50 People?

  I've seen this question before and I am sure it will be fine but I want assurance before I do it. I am looking at running an IRC server with 128MB of ram and 500GB of BW. The server will usually handle at least 15 people throughout the whole day but there will be times where there can be at least 50 people in it maybe even more. I might also have a few extra channels on there so probably like at least 5 channels and the same people on the one channel will be in the other channels. Also I am trying to decide on the software to use. • Cisco QoS Guidence

  I have a 10M connection to the internet that is hooked into a 100M port. I am getting started with QoS, and am hopping for a little guidance on setting it up on a Cisco 3825 router. Right now I am going forward with the idea that I have to implement it on my router, and the provider can't provide QoS for me. How I envision it working is that the QoS will drop or queue packets on my router and that will help prevent a situation where the provider has to start dropping a lot of packets. Right now all I am tasked with is making sure that one of the 3 LANs gets a certain slice (say 3M for Gig Lan1) of the 10M internet connection (But ideally this will be more flexible in the Future). 10M Internet on 100M port on HWIC-4ESW +-----------------------+ | | Gig Lan1 | Cisco 3825 | Lan3 on HWIC-4ESW | | +-----------------------+ Gig Lan2 I need to learn more about QoS, but having a target technology and maybe example configuration will help me wrap my head around the reading I am doing a little more. Which Cisco QoS Technology do you recommend for this particular situation? Have a basic sample config of how this might work? Right now the 10M line is not congested, so this more to have something in place in case it starts to become mildly congested in the future.

  Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101,but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their Firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server.   I am trying to experiment with GNUS email in Emacs, in Windows (EDIT: x64 bit). I've got it to work in Ubuntu, but struggling with it in Windows. From http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_mono/emacs-gnutls.html#Help-For-Users I read in second paragraph: This is a little bit trickier on the W32 (Windows) platform, but if you have the GnuTLS DLLs (available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ezwinports/files/ thanks to Eli Zaretskii) in the same directory as Emacs, you should be OK. I have downloaded and unzipped the gnutls-3.0.9-w32-bin package, but am not sure what to do with it. I have tried putting it in Program Files (x86), which is "the same directory as Emacs". I have tried putting it in the emacs-24.3 folder. I consider merging all the folders in between the two, but am hesitant as that seems a difficult troubleshoot attempt compared to my knowledge on these matters. I think Emacs needs to somehow see the gnutls binaries and/or dlls. My knowledge is limited on this. I've also struggled to understand PATHs for sometime now, and am not sure if that approach is relevant here. FYI, the emacs directory contains folders labeled bin, etc, info, leim, lisp and site-lisp. The gnutls directory contains folder labeled bin, include, lib and share. Hmm, now I'm finding lots of links on adding paths. Still, I'm skeptical that I would only add gnutls.exe path, as it seems the dlls are needed. Some additional data for Ramhound's first comment I have been attempting the (require 'gnutls) route. This seems to be the most relevant parts in the log: Opening connection to imap.gmail.com via tls... gnutls.c: [1] (Emacs) GnuTLS library not found Opening TLS connection to `imap.gmail.com'... • Performance Tuning a High-Load Apache Server

  I am looking to understand some server performance problems I am seeing with a (for us) heavily loaded web server. The environment is as follows: Debian Lenny (all stable packages + patched to security updates) Apache 2.2.9 PHP 5.2.6 Amazon EC2 large instance The behavior we're seeing is that the web typically feels responsive, but with a slight delay to begin handling a request -- sometimes a fraction of a second, sometimes 2-3 seconds in our peak usage times. The actual load on the server is being reported as very high -- often 10.xx or 20.xx as reported by top. Further, running other things on the server during these times (even vi) is very slow, so the load is definitely up there. Oddly enough Apache remains very responsive, other than that initial delay. We have Apache configured as follows, using prefork: StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 And KeepAlive as: KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 100 KeepAliveTimeout 5 Looking at the server-status page, even at these times of heavy load we are rarely hitting the client cap, usually serving between 80-100 requests and many of those in the keepalive state. That tells me to rule out the initial request slowness as "waiting for a handler" but I may be wrong. Amazon's CloudWatch monitoring tells me that even when our OS is reporting a load of 15, our instance CPU utilization is between 75-80%. From my limited experience I draw the following conclusions/questions: We may be allowing far too many KeepAlive requests I do see some time spent waiting for IO in the vmstat although not consistently and not a lot (I think?) so I am not sure this is a big concern or not, I am less experienced with vmstat Also in vmstat, I see in some iterations a number of processes waiting to be served, which is what I am attributing the initial page load delay on our web server to, possibly erroneously We serve a mixture of static content (75% or higher) and script content, and the script content is often fairly processor intensive, so finding the right balance between the two is important; long term we want to move statics elsewhere to optimize both servers but our software is not ready for that today I am happy to provide additional information if anybody has any ideas, the other note is that this is a high-availability production installation so I am wary of making tweak after tweak, and is why I haven't played with things like the KeepAlive value myself yet.

• vsftpd: ECONNREFUSED with "allow_writeable_chroot=YES"

  When setting up vsftpd I am trapped. When I leave the ftpuser's home directory without write permission I can login and all is fine despite the fact, that I cannot write (of course). When I add write permission I get something like cannot change to directory with write permissions if user is chrooted Then I added allow_writeable_chroot=YES to vsftpd.conf. But now I get ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server I am lost. What am I doing wrong?

  I am working on legacy projects with thousands of files spanning more than 10 projects. I am wondering what other people are using for searching string in a text file. I am using windows and i typically search on 10,000 files to make sure some code is not called from other places. I've tried numerous text search tools mentioned here such as Actual Search & Replace, Ultraedit, notepad++ but they all take very long time to search due to the large # of files they have to look into.
