• Best way to plan a task ?

  Hi All, As I am very new to programming, I am very curious about learning the best ways/practices of programming. Whenever I want to write any program , I strat directly with coding while some guys say that you should plan your program first before starting the code. But I don't understand the real value of creating the class diagrams and all that kind of stuff coz I think that ultimately I have to write the code. • Need a creative machine name suggestions for dev machine.

  So.. I have a windows machine running a dev-db server (oracle) , svn server (visual svn) and a project management tool (redmine). I need suggestions for a good host name for this machine, which is very easy-to-remember and sounds creative. • Dendrogram generated by scipy-cluster does not show

  I am using scipy-cluster to generate a hierarchical clustering on some data. As a final step of the application, I call the dendrogram function to plot the clustering. I am running on Mac OS X Snow Leopard using the built-in Python 2.6.1 and this matplotlib package. The program runs fine, but at the end the Rocket Ship icon (as I understand, this is the launcher for GUI applications in python) shows up and vanishes immediately without doing anything. Nothing is shown. If I add a 'raw_input' after the call, it just bounces up and down in the dock forever. If I run a simple sample application for matplotlib from the terminal it runs fine. Does anyone have any experiences on this?

• How to deploy and register a VSPackage supporting multiple versions of Visual Studio (2005, 2008, 20

  I have an open source VSPackage that I would like to release with support for Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2008, and Visual Studio 2010. I'm trying to figure out how to create the installer and how to perform the package registration with each edition of Visual Studio. The deployment research I've done indicates my best bet for an installer is a VSIX inside an MSI. The registration research I've done is a lot less clear. VSPackage registration seems to differ for every edition (VS2005 uses regpkg, VS2008 uses pkgdef, VS2010 uses VSIX). Can anyone share their experiences and/or point me towards any information about the best approach for targeting multiple versions of Visual Studio? I'm looking for the easiest implementation and preferably keeping it in a single installer if reasonably feasible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Admin mode on Procurve Switches

  Not being a network expert, I spent some time configuring my network, until I found my mistake: On my HP ProCurve Switch 1810G, I thought that "Admin mode" means whether the administrative interface can be accessed from this port. Well, it means whether the port is enabled or not. Extract from the help function: Admin Mode - Select to enable the port-control administration state. Click to enable and have the port participate in the network.(Default : Enabled ) Well, of course I didn't read the help, because I didn't doubt it's for the adminsitrative interface and suspected an error somewhere else. Anyway, I am wondering if that is a commonly used term for enabling/disabling ports or if HP just wanted to make my life harder? I can't understand why this option isn't just called "Enable port"!? • Can't connect to local SQL Server

  I'm banging my head against the wall here and can't get things figured out. Yesterday I uninstalled SQL Server 2008 Express and installed a full copy of SQL Server 2008 R2. Everything installed fine but I can't connect to the database to save my life. There is a similar question here that never got answered and I'm not sure if this may be specific to 2008 R2 and how I may have installed. Under my old configuration (SQL Express) I connected with "DM\SQLEXPRESS" just fine. So far I've tried: DM\MSSQLSERVER - .\MSSQLSERVER - \MSSQLSERVER - MSSQLSERVER - DM\Dave\MSSQLSERVER and I get the "cannot connect to server" error every time. I have the service installed as well as the SQL Server Browser that I have started. If anyone had any suggestions that would be great.

• 64bit on core i5 with 2GB DDR3 RAM?

  Core i5 2.3 Ghz processor 512mb ATI HD 4570 2GB 1333 RAM 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Should I "down-grade" to 32bit? Does running 64bit with only 2GB RAM make the laptop weaker than running 32bit with 2GB RAM or is the performance pretty much the same? Is there any performance benefit to running 64bit with only 2GB RAM? Is there an impact on battery life between 64bit and 32bit. Should I maybe just add another 2GB RAM? Thanks.

• Reordering context menu items in Foobar2000?

  I read somewhere that context menu items in foobar2000 could not only be enabled/disabled, but also reordered in "Preferences: Context Menu". Perhaps I'm missing something, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to reorder them; I tried dragging, right-clicking and several key combinations to no avail. Am I missing something, or is this impossible (now)? (In this case I'd like to move the "Rating" item out of the Playback Statistics submenu.) I'm using foobar2000 1.1.3.

  Does anyone know how to replace the IBM JSF Portlet Bridge with Myfaces Portlet Bridge 2.0? I want to set up a small local testing environment. Pluto + Tomcat + Myfaces Portlet Bridge. My Portlets are on JSF 1.1, but it should be possible to use JSF 1.2 Implementation!? Target is that a developed portlet(some old portlets use ibm jsf extended components) work on websphere portal and pluto without changes. I managed with maven profiles to get a small portlet with ibm jsf components to work in pluto, but i dont get it to work in websphere portal... Does anyone have experiences with that issue?

  When creating a new Rails project using: rails sample Then creating a model using: script/generate model person first_name:string last_name:string Everything is fine. However, if I add any gems to my environment.rb: config.gem "authlogic" And run the same generator, I get the following: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. The warning just recently appeared (I think), but I would like to fix it if possible. Any hints or similar experiences? Thanks.

• Who Knows AppWeb HTTP Server And It's Embedded PHP?

  Hi all, on my search for a fast but comfortable web server I dropped into the homepage of EmbedThis(TM) AppWeb(TM) HTTP server. This one has 2 licencse models, GPLv2 and a commercial one with support. On the first view it looks good: the footprint is not too big, it is fast and it has a lot of configuration otions. The most important thing would be a fast PHP execution using a built-in PHP library. Unfortunately this PHP library doesn't include every option, especially "gettext" which one I need for I18N. My target platform is Linux on an embedded device with an ARM based CPU. Does anybody have experiences with the issues mentioned above? Kind regards, Andi

• Funky mail sorting and grouping in Outlook 2007

  In outlook 2007 I group mails in a folder by subject with mails in each subject group sorted by Received date (newest to oldest) This works fine; I tick 'Subject' and 'Show in groups' in the context menu of the folder's table header. Life is good. But the subject groups in the mail folder are sorted alphabetically. I would like the group which has the newest mail to be the first group. Similar to how the arrange by 'Conversation' works Can this be done? I'm not averse to an add-in/macro type solution if anyone can point me at examples of implementing custom sorting in Outlook

• why is iometer performance slower after first run?

  I'm doing some benchmarking with IOMeter, and I'm seeing a consistent and susbtantial drop-off in performance after running the first test. These drop-offs are about the same on the three systems I've tested on, which makes me think it's a configuration setting, or just a fact of life about using IOMeter. For example, one system (local RAID 10) went from 388 I/Os per second the first run, to about 211 I/Os per second on every run after that. Everything else about the test was identical, and I also bounced the machine in between runs. So, is this expected behavior, or am I missing something?

  I am making my first foray into scala for a production app. The app is currently packaged as a war file. My plan is to create a jar file of the scala compiled artifacts and add that into the lib folder for the war file. My enhancement is a mysql-backed app exposed via Jersey & will be integrated with a 3rd party site via HttpClient invocations. I know how to do this via plain java. But when doing it in scala, there are several decision points that I am pussyfooting on. scala 2.7.7 or 2.8 RC ? JDBC via querulous Is this API ready for production ? sbt vs maven. I am comfortable with maven. Is there a scala idiomatic wrapper for HttpClient (or should I use it just like in java) ? I'd love to hear your comments and experiences on starting out with scala.   Background: DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=lucid DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.04 LTS" I've built nginx, and I'd like to use upstart to start it: nginx upstart script from the site: description "nginx http daemon" start on runlevel 2 stop on runlevel 0 stop on runlevel 1 stop on runlevel 6 console owner exec /usr/sbin/nginx -c /etc/nginx/nginx.conf -g "daemon off;" respawn I get "unknown job" when i try to use initctl to run it, which I just learned apparently means there is an error, ( what's wrong with "Error" to describe errors?) Can someone point me in the right direction ? I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... Any tips? EDIT: initctl version init (upstart 0.6.5)

• Why did my laptop turn off?

  Normally I can slip my running laptop into a backpack, go somewhere, and if it's no more than about half an hour later, it'll still be running. At the destination I plug in the AC power unit and all is well. I run it off of the AC unit before and after the trip, have the screen at less than full backlight brightness, and don't have any peripherals that burn power. Sometimes the wireless switch accidentally slides in the backpack, and that causes extra power to be used and the laptop dies before I reach the destination. Sad, but so be it. But sometimes the wireless switch is off, I've reached the destination in less than 30 minutes (typically 10-20 min), and I know the battery was fully charged, yet the machine is off. Is there a way to determine, after the fact, why the machine shut itself off? I'm running Linux on a fairly powerful Gateway with 4GB RAM, fancy nvidia graphics, dual core cpu, chosen more for number crunching power than battery life, but should last easily for half an hour if not an hour.

If I would do it in photoshop, I would have to worry more about textures and object. I would so worry about the size, It should be scalable and would look good in print and screen.   Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences. • How should I compensate for a bad WSDL?

  I've come across several examples of SOAP-based web services where automated tooling fails to build a client that works. Investigating these examples leads me to believe that the WSDL the service uses to describe itself doesn't quite match the service that's being provided. Maybe a wrong type somewhere, a different data structure - something. I'm unsure what the most appropriate response is - if we assume that the obvious one (get the provider to fix their stuff) isn't available. Some options I can think of: Make a fixed WSDL? Hack the generated code? Any other options? No good options? What good experiences have people had? What works in a real environment? Thanks

• Which distribution website should I pick for my open-source package?

I see various options for how/where to publish/host it: Get my own domain and put it there Put it on Sourceforge Put it on Google Code Put it on Freshmeat ...? What are your experiences / recommendations? What's the current trend among software developers? My only requirements are that I ... can add my own logo on the website can put up some documentation there, get a nice URL that is easy to remember get SVN support (I would also be fine with just uploading a tarball for each new version, it just shouldn't force me to use CVS or any other version control system I'm not familiar with) and of course, the site shouldn't take ownership in the code etc. oh, and it should be free (ok, for registering my own domain I'll be willing to pay a little bit)

  I'm planning to refresh my laptop. I've been using a thinkpad T42 for a long time and run Ubuntu on it. I'm planning to move to using a desktop for all my heavy work and getting a very light netbook style machine for mobile use. I need a decent keyboard, good battery life and a display that's bright and responsive. I'm evaluating a couple of laptops including a mac but have never come across information about a Sony Vaio. Do any of the people have experience with the laptop? What are your opinions? Does it work fine with Linux? Is it tinkerable (a big problem with the macbooks). How's the build quality, how's the service?

• Best Version control for lone developer

  I'm a lone developer at the moment; please share you experiences on what is a good VC setup for a lone developer. My constraints are; I work on multiple machines and need to keep them synced up Sometimes I work offline I'm currently using Subversion(just the client to a remote server), and that is working ok. I'm interested in mecurial and git DVCS, but none of their use-cases make sense to my situation. EDIT: I've migrated my active development to Fossil http://www.fossil-scm.org/ after trialing it with a client. I really like the features to autosync my repositories(reducing accidental forks), the documentation support(both wiki and embedded/versioned) that supports my need to document the code and the project in different spaces, the easy to configure issue tracker, nice access control, skinnable web interface and helpful community.

• REST: Should I redirect to the version URL of an entity?

  I am currently working on a REST service. This service has an entity which has different versions, similar to Wikipedia articles. Now I'm wondering what I should return if for GET /article/4711 Should I use a (temporary) redirect to the current version, e.g. GET /article/4711/version/7 Or should I return the current version directly? Using redirects would considerably simplify HTTP caching (using Last-Modified) but has the disadvantages a redirect has (extra request, 'harder' to implement). Therefore I'm not sure whether this is good practice though. Any suggestions, advise, or experiences to share? (btw: ever tried search for "REST Version"? Everything you get is about the version of the API rather than entities. So please bear with me if this is a duplicate.)
