• Database caching on a shared host

  Anyone have any ideas how to increase MySQL performance on a shared host? My question has less to do with overall database performance and more to do with simply retrieving user-submitted data. Currently my database will create caches at timed intervals, and then the PHP will selectively access the static files it needs. This has given me a noticeable performance boost, but I am worried about a time in which I have so much data that having to read in big files in PHP will actually be slower. I am just looking for ideas for shared hosting solutions; I am not going to get my own server anytime soon. Thanks!

• Mimic an HTTPRequest and HTTPResponse object in Java

  How do I mimic an HTTPServletRequest and HTTPServletResponse object. The reason is I want to test the behaviour of some servlets. I know JUnit probably provides this functionality but I don't know how to use it (I will learn soon) and need to do this reasonably quickly. HTTPServletRequest and HTTPServletResponse are both interfaces so they can't be instantiated. There is a HttpServletRequestWrapper which implements HttpServletRequest but it doesn't seem to have any setParameter() type methods and HttpServletResponse doesn't seem to have any implementing classes at all. How can I test my code by passing a suitable HttpServletRequest object and then checking that the received HttpServletResponse object matches what I expect?

• Refresh layout while filling it

  Hi guys, I have an activity with a HorizontalScrollView. When it opens, I start filling this view (or rather, a container layout inside it) with another views. This is done from another thread by using handler.post. The views are added in bunches of 15, and when there are no more views to add, I start updating them with new data (this is a kind of streaming data from a server). The problem is that the scrollview is empty until all of the views are added. As soon as they are all added and start updating, the scrollview gets drawn. How do I refresh it in the process of adding views? I don't want the screen to be empty for 3 seconds while all of the views are added. Thanks a lot. UPDATE: turned out this problem is not specific for HorizontalScrollView, this is the case for any generic layout.

• Deferring signal handling in Linux

  I'm trying to figure out how to block a signal in Linux kernel 2.4 (user space) from invoking its handler, but keep it available to be handled later, preferably as soon as I re activate the handling of said signal. The function sigprocmask seem to come up in all my search results, but I can't find a good, clear description that explains whether the blocked signal gets "saved" to be handled later, and if so where and how do I handle it when I'm ready for it. Can someone please clarify what's going on, preferably with a code example? Thanks in advance.

  I am creating an ASP.Net MVC website that I am launching soon in private beta. What I am using. ASP.NET MVC 2 ASP.NET Sql Membership Provider Authorization Attributes on ActionMethods. ex. [EditorsOnly] What I am trying to accomplish: During the private Beta period of my website, I want no anonymous users to access my site. Only Beta Testers of my site should be able to login and use my site as normal. After the private beta period people can access it using the security structure I already have set up. I am hoping I do not have to recompile but can have a setting in the webconfig to switch between Private Beta mode to Normal mode. Thanks for your suggestions.

My requreiment is as soon as producer calls set method i have to downlaod fresh data from intenet . If I search for Dave for example it will only find items like "Dave something" and not find Dave. $queryArtist = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM artists WHERE artist LIKE '%$ArtistNameSearch%' ORDER BY artist ASC"); I know mysql_query is out dated and will change it to mysqli soon as I get this worked out. • Swing: what to do when a GUI update takes too long and freezes other GUI elements?

  Hello, everyone! I know that GUI code in Java Swing must be put inside SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait or SwingUtilities.invokeLater. This way threading works fine. Sadly, in my situation, the GUI update it that thing which takes much longer than background thread(s). More specific: I update a JTree with about just 400 entries, nesting depth is maximum 4, so should be nothing scary, right? But it takes sometimes one second! I need to ensure that the user is able to type in a JTextPane without delays. Well, guess what, the slow JTree updates do cause delays for JTextPane during input. It refreshes only as soon as the tree gets updated. I am using Netbeans and know empirically that a Java app can update lots of information without freezing the rest of the UI. How can it be done? NOTE 1: All those DefaultMutableTreeNodes are prepared outside the invokeAndWait. NOTE 2: When I replace invokeAndWait with invokeLater the tree doesn't get updated.

  I want to draw a infinitely repeating parallax using Cocos2D on Android. Now, there are some solutions given to this problem in Objective C, but I'm stuck with my implementation in Android. I have tried using CCSprite background = CCSprite.sprite("background_island.png"); CCTexParams params = new CCTexParams(GL10.GL_LINEAR,GL10.GL_LINEAR,GL10.GL_REPEAT,GL10.GL_REPEAT); background.getTexture().setTexParameters(params); But it only extends the background in 1 direction. I guess I have to use 2 sprites, such that as soon as 1st finishes, the other starts and vice versa, but I'm stuck with the implementation.

  We upgraded from mockito-all-1.8.5.jar to mockito-all-1.9.0.jar and now see null pointers when using annotations for the classes being mocked. • Why can't QFile read from the "~" directory?

  I've tried the following short example to find out about a bug in a bigger program I am working on. It looks like QFile doesn't support unix (or the shell's) notation for the home directory: #include <QFile> #include <QDebug> int main() { QFile f("~/.vimrc"); if (f.open(QIODevice::ReadOnly)) { qDebug() << f.readAll(); f.close(); } else { qDebug() << f.error(); } } As soon as I replace the "~" with my real home directory path, it works. Is there an easy workaround - some setting to enable? Or do I have to go the "ugly" way and ask QDir for the home directory of the current user and prepend that manually to each path?

• IHTMLTxtRange.execCommand("Copy",false,null) fails due to IE settings

  We have a .Net application that is used for editing/rendering customized HTML documents. It is hosted in IE using the AxSHDocVw.AxWebBrowser controls. We proceed with navigating to "about:blank" page initially then we change the Document by writing our custom values into it. The problem we are facing is the call to IHTMLTxtRange.execCommand("Copy",false,null) is failing if we don't enable the IE Security Settings in the Internet Security zone (Scripting-Allow Programmatic Access to Clipboard ). In order to bypass the security setting ,I tried to point to a local html file initially while navigating. But this fails as soon as I modify the Document. I want to use the IHTMLTxtRange.execCommand("Copy",false,null) command so that I can customize our Copy/Paste operations. Is there any other way I can do this. Please share your ideas inorder to overcome this situation. Thanks. Sriram

I'm now trying to accomplish this and is asking for a bit of advise: I'm basically trying to build a filter with 4 input elements, and 1 output. I have 4 select (drop down) elements in my page. As soon as one of them is changed, I need to build a href and get the partial view with the return values. My questionis now if I should try to build the href in the select element or if I can do it once in jquery, and don't have to have duplicated code. How would I accomplish this?

• iOS app won't compile on device but works fine in simulator

  I'm assuming this has something to do with linking, but I've removed RestKit and re-added it. I made sure all my connections and linking was in place. If I set XCode to use the simulator it runs fine, but as soon as I set it to run on any device it won't even build. The only other thing of note is this didn't start happening till I upgraded to XCode 4.5. • How to load secure S3 images into Flex with temporary URLs

  I have some secure images on S3 that I need to load into Flex. I was expecting to be able to do this using signed temporary URLs but can't get it working. I know the URLs I'm generating are correct, because they load fine in my browsers' address bar. Moreover, Flex has no problem loading my images with a non-signed url when they are public, but as soon as I try signing the urls all the images fail, whether public or not. I've tried image.source = signedURL, image.load(signedURL), etc. If I try loading the file with URLLoader/URLStream, it looks like I'm getting the data OK, but I'm not sure how to translate those results to an Image control. Is this just an issue with the Image control not being able to recognize signed urls? Do I have to load the image from a byte array? What would that look like?

• jQuery Upload Progress Plugin Not working in Chrome and Safari

  I am using the jquery.uploadprogress plugin to get the upload progress of a file from the NginxHttpUploadProgressModule. This is inside an iframe for a facebook application. It works in firefox, but it fails in chrome/safari. When I open the console I get this. Uncaught ReferenceError: progressFrame is not defined jquery.uploadprogress.js:80 Any idea how I would fix that? I would like to also send the file using AJAX when it is completed. How would I implement that? EDIT: I need this soon and it is important so I am going to put a 100 point bounty on this question. The first person to answer it will receive the 100 points. I am working to convert these into below CSV format Time,interface.RX,interface.TX,interface.close.... 11:13:49,0,0,0,.... Simple as of now but the problem is, I have to get the data in csv format online, i.e as soon the log file updated the CSV should also be updated. Is there any way to do this using perl.

• Could Grand Central Dispatch (`libdispatch`) ever be available on Windows?

  I’m looking into multithreading, and GCD seems like a much better option than manually writing a solution using pthread.h and pthreads-win32. However, although it looks like libdispatch is either working on, or soon going to be working on, most newer POSIX-compatible systems… I have to ask, what about Windows? What are the chances of libdispatch being ported to Windows? What are the barriers preventing that from happening? If it came down to it, what would I need to do to preform that portage?

  This is more of a "programmers" question, but felt that it was technical enough to belong on Stack Overflow instead. I'm launching an application soon that will follow the shareware model of purchase. I've thought about implementing this in a few ways: Limited access to the application until they purchase Full access to the application but expires after 30 day, requiring them to purchase to retain utility. Full access to the application indefinitely, but with a 10-15 second pop-up box on start-up asking them to register -- like mIRC does (or used to do). The method of authentication will be web-based. I'll provide them with an authentication key and they'll put it in the application. Whenever the application boots up, it'll check my web service and determine whether the application is genuine or not. This isn't my question. My question is: Is there a preferred method of implementation? I'd like to piss off the users as little as possible, but I'd also like to get paid for my work.

What I need is to keep the Session opened until the page is rendered, because in my JSP y use the lazy attributes of the object i load from the DB. • Enable editing does not call didSelectRowAtIndexPath ??

  Hi I have a UITableViewController where the user should be able to edit the items. In order to enable editing i use this : self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = self.editButtonItem; And for everyone, how does not know where self.editButtonItem comes from, it is predefined by the SDK. So, now when I press on any item, this method is called : - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath but as soon as I hit the edit button and while editing is active, this method does not seemed to be called. Any idea what I missing ? • jCarousel not working properly within tabbed menu

  Hi everybody, I'm riding three different jCarousel ul, one in each target of a tabbed menu designeb by Yetii. The problem issue is that the one in the first target works well, whereas the remaining two show just a slice of the first picture and slide soon onto a back frame. The jCarousel is initialized by a class as the behaviour required is the same for all targets: jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('.jcarousel-skin-tango').jcarousel({ wrap: 'circular', //size:8, scroll:1, animation:.10, auto:5, }); }); The ul have different id. • Unable to get multiple connection to MySql on Windows 7

  I have installed MySql on windows 7 ... issue is i'm unable to get multiple connection to MySql . If I connect to MySql through command line and at the same time open an other MySql command line client it goes into wait state, as soon as I disconnect the first one later one gets connected. Because of above issues I'm unable to run tomcat in debug mode as it tries to get more than one connection to MySql in debug mode. Previously I was using same version of MySql i.e. 5.1 on vista and it was working fine.
