• bytea type & nulls, Postgres

  I'm using a bytea type in PostgreSQL, which, to my understanding, contains just a series of bytes. However, I can't get it to play well with nulls. For example: =# select length(E'aa\x00aa'::bytea); length -------- 2 (1 row) I was expecting 5. Also: =# select md5(E'aa\x00aa'::bytea); md5 ---------------------------------- 4124bc0a9335c27f086f24ba207a4912 (1 row) That's the MD5 of "aa", not "aa\x00aa". Clearly, I'm Doing It Wrong, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm also on an older version of Postgres (8.1.11) for reasons outside of my control. (I'll see if this behaves the same on the latest Postgres as soon as I get home...)

• Is the F# language reference documentation available in an offline format (PDF, CHM)?

  I've found several posts on hubFS of people asking if there is, or will be, offline documentation for F#. These posts haven't been answered. So I want to give it a shot and ask the same question here on SO. Where I've looked for offline documentation so far: The April 2010 CTP release of Visual F# (version 2.0) is available for VS 2008, but it doesn't come without an offline help. There's a question on SO about offline documentation for various programming languages, but F# isn't mentioned there at the time of this writing. There is of course Microsoft's F# language reference documentation (available on MSDN), which could be downloaded for offline browsing using e.g. wget. Question: Does anyone know whether any "official" offline documentation is on the way, anytime soon? (And related to this, albeit this probably can't be answered objectively: Would it be reasonable to expect that F# likely won't undergo ECMA or ISO standardization, ie. there likely won't be a standards document describing the language?)

• R: simple and short if clauses for combind statements

  Hello, TRUE/FALSE if clauses are easily and quickly done in R. However, if the argument gets more complex, it also gets ugly very soon. For instance: I might want to execute different operations for a row(foo) dependent on the value in one cell (foo[1]). Let the intervals be 0:39 and 40:59 and 60:100 Something like does not exit: (if foo[1] "in" 40:60){... In fact, I only see ways of at least two if clauses and two else statements and the action for the first interval somewhere at the bottom of the code. With more intervals(or any other condition) it is getting more complex. Is there a best practice (for this purpose or others) with a simple construction and nice design to read? Thanks a lot!

• Scale div in an upwards direction, instead of down?

  I have a custom info window over a google map, sometimes these info windows contain an image. When they do, the info window scales down over the marker it is positioned over as soon as the image has finished loading. So the images take longer to load and the div's position has already been calculated by the time the image is finished loading. I do believe there is a way of checking if an image has finished loaded, but that seems a long route - is there not a simple way with JS or CSS to get the div to scale upwards instead of down. Anyone have any clues?

  Hello, I want to create an adhoc between labtops were they will communicate using wireless communication. I will use java for this but still I do not know how to start.. I think I'll have to use sockets for the connections right? How will a laptop notice other laptops in its local network or the other way around? Do i need a server to handle the communication between laptops? Another thing, how to broadcast a message from one laptop to other laptops in the network? Please reply as soon as you can. • Python fCGI + sqlAlchemy = malformed header from script. Bad header=FROM tags : index.py

  I'm writing an Fast-CGI application that makes use of sqlAlchemy & MySQL for persistent data storage. I have no problem connecting to the DB and setting up ORM (so that tables get mapped to classes); I can even add data to tables (in memory). But, as soon as I query the DB (and push any changes from memory to storage) I get a 500 Internal Server Error and my error.log records malformed header from script. Bad header=FROM tags : index.py, when tags is the table name. Any idea what could be causing this? Also, I don't think it matters, but its a Linux development server talking to an off-site (across the country) MySQL server.

  Hello, i tryed to follow that great tutorial (STAR rating with css : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1987524/turn-a-number-into-star-rating-display-using-jquery-and-css) but i've just a big problem : When i do <span class="stars">1.75</span> or $foo='1.75'; echo '<span class="stars">'.$foo.'</span> the stars is correctly shown, but as soon as i do : while($val = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $average = ($val['services'] + $val['serviceCli'] + $val['interface'] + $val['qualite'] + $val['rapport'] ) / 5 ; <span class="stars">.$average.</span> } the stars stops working i double checked the data type in mysql : they're all TINYINT(2) and i tryed that : $average = intval($average); but it's still not working, Thank you

• When is a Google Maps API key required?

  Recently Google changed it's policy on the use API keys. You're now supposed to no longer need an API key to place Google Maps on your website. And this worked perfectly. But now I have this map (without API key) running on my localhost, which works fine. But as soon as I place it online, I get a popup saying that I need another API key. And on another page on that website, Google Maps does work. Could it maybe have something to do with that the map that doesn't work have a lot (30+) of markers on it? Actually using an API key wouldn't be a very nice solution to me, as this is part of a Wordpress plugin used on many websites.

  The INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE error is the bane of every Android developer's life. It happens regardless of app size, or how much storage is available. Rebooting the target device fixes the problem briefly, but it soon comes back. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of message board posts from people asking why the problem occurs, but the folks at Google are frustratingly silent on the issue. There is a simple workaround. If your test device is running Android 2.2 or later then add the android:installLocation attribute to your application's manifest file, with the value "preferExternal". This will force the app to be installed on the device's external storage, such as a phone's SD card. For example: <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.andrewsmith.android.darkness" android:installLocation="preferExternal" This is more of a band-aid than a fix, and it may not be ideal if you want your finished app to install on the device's internal memory. But it will at least make the development process a lot less frustrating.

Steps are generally not interdependent, in that data input at each step has little or no effect on the consequent steps. However each step may have a set of validations which determine whether the user can progress to the next step by clicking 'continue' What should be the behavior when the user clicks previous? a Quickly move to the previous page, thus losing all the unsaved data in the form. Prompting the user with a warning is an option, but it can become irritating quite soon. b Move to the previous page saving all the data in the current step - without triggering validations, so that when the user comes back she sees the form in the same state that she left it in. c any other behaviour All opinions are welcome :)

• How to prevent maven to resolve dependencies in local repository

  Is there a way to tell maven (when doing mvn package, mvn site or ...) not to resolve the dependencies from the local repository? Background of this question: Sometimes I get into problems, when previously cached dependencies (e.g. SomeProject-0.7-ALPHA) are no longer available in the remote repository. In my local build everything still works fine as the dependency has been cached before. As soon as I share my pom with others, they may get into trouble, as they dont have a cached version of that dependency and the dependency can no longer be resolved from the remote repository.   I am using the version 1.0 release of Linq for nHibernate. When I run the following linq statements I receive the error not a single-length projection: Surname I can find very few references to this on the web and looking into the source it says it should never occur! ClientID is a Int type and Surname is a string. • Jquery .Ajax error when trying to POST data in ASP.NET MVC

  I am unable to access an action in my controller using .ajax. The code works on my development machine but as soon as I place it on the server it gives the error 401 Unauthorized.   I've spent the day looking at jQuery plugin: Validation by Jörn Zaefferer. I notice that it works fine as long as you call the validate() method without options. In my little squalid world, as soon as I add options, like errorPlacement, I notice that validation ignores form fields that are not marked required. I also notice that many, many demos mark all fields required---or do not pass options. Am I writing about anything familiar here? Or should I astral project to a parallel universe?

  I have multiple int arrays: 1) [1 , 202,4 ,55] 2) [40, 7] 3) [2 , 48 ,5] 4) [40, 8 ,90] I need to get the array that has the biggest numbers in all positions. In my case that would be array #4. Explanation: arrays #2, #4 have the biggest number in 1st position, so after the first iteration these 2 arrays will be returned ([40, 7] and [40, 8 ,90]) now after comparing 2nd position of the returned array from previous iteration we will get array #4 because 8 7 and so on... Can you suggest an efficient algorithm for this? Doing with Linq will be preferable. UPDATE There is no limitation for the length, but as soon as some number in any position is greater, so this array is the biggest.

  Hello, I am trying to develope an application that offers a service via bluetooth. Everything works fine in the emulator but as soon I install it on a real device (6120/X6 Nokia) the service cannot be found. If I search for already registered services such as OBEX they are found. So I think it has something to do with the registration.   Hello, I'm using JAXWS for generating webservices and serving using EndPoint.publish() as well as deploying war file, but as soon as it has served 100 requests it wouldn't return 101st response. How to configure JAXWS to change this count to unlimited? EDIT: solution found, first of all it was not related to JAXWS and I'm sorry for posting it here, in my first impression I thought problem is with JAXWS but after deep exploring and debugging I found problem with my persistence layer (Hibernate) where max number of sessions allowed are 100 by default. Sorry again for making you guys to think which actually does not make sense.

• "SQL Server does not exist or access denied." upon VB.Net Deployment

  Have built a small VB.Net app in VS2010. The connection string to the SQL Server is as follows: <connectionStrings> <add name="IWSR_DataDownloadWizard.My.MySettings.sqlConnection" connectionString="Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Data Source=SQLServer;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=IWSROL" providerName="System.Data.OleDb" /> </connectionStrings> Within the VS2010 environment AND on my machine, the connection works perfectly, however when I deploy to clients I get an error message of: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. I've tried to search the net for solutions, have seen a few instances of people saying to NOT use the Server Name but the IP Address instead (this doesn't work) and some saying to remove the "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1", again this doesn't work. Can anyone suggest a solution please? Further information: Development System is Windows7 using VS2010 Deployment systems are a combination of Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 7 SQL Server is SQL2000 (soon to be SQL2005). TIA

• What's a good way to detect wrap-around in a fixed-width message counter?

  I'm writing a client application to communicate with a server program via UDP. The client periodically makes requests for data and needs to use the most recent server response. The request message has a 16-bit unsigned counter field that is echoed by the server so I can pair requests with server responses. Since it's UDP, I have to handle the case where server responses arrive out of order (or don't arrive at all). Naively, that means holding on to the highest message counter seen so far and dropping any incoming message with a lower number. But that will fail as soon as we pass 65535 messages and the counter wraps back to zero. Is there a good way to detect (with reasonable probability) that, for example, message 5 actually comes after message 65,000? The implementation language is C++.
